It took me about 2 minutes to realize it was inflating. I have a hand pump and electric pumps, but they were not needed. The trick is to pinch the body of the valve right past the hole that you are blowing into. |

However, these mattresses do always come with a little round patch you can cut up into smaller pieces and use to cover any holes made by your lovely animals! Honestly, that's what I've always done and that's worked fine. |

Bag does have handles which is a nice feature. |
