The five year shelf life is from the date stamp on each of these items and covers the items staying fresh during that time. We have found that they still taste great after but we always recommend replacing them at that point. For our kits, all customers receive an email at the 5 year mark with a special link and discount to purchase just the expired items without having to replace the whole kit. Hope this helps.

Answer:	MAJOR CORRECTION: I was not happy to find that this info contained here is incorrect after making my purchase. Documentation that came with product indicated food has a 5 year shelf life, NOT 30. My documentation did not indicate a shelf life for the water so I googled the suppliers website and verified that water and food both have 5 year shelf life. I guess the trick is not to count on information contained in customer's questions and answers.
