Step 1

Gather some kindling (such as dry grass, pine needles, small twigs) and some tinder (such as small branches, pine cones, bark).

Amazon needs to ensure that they don't give any impression of improper dealings especially when they are personally involved in the daily sales of an item in question. You get one that you cut off what you need. It takes very little to get your fire going. Excellent product, the price is well worth it, you can start a ton of fires if you use a small amount of the waterproof fire starter. I’d buy a dual arch lighter to go with it. They are a necessity because they float, waterproof and light up to 300 times on a 90 minute charge, depending on which one you select. The price is worth the need for a product like this, when you really need it, you’d pay a $100. My go-to fire starter, even at hone in the fire pit.

Answer:	My experience with this rod is you cannot scrape off bits of rod material like the inexpensive fire starters you can get at Harbor Freight. BUT... you do not need to. Striking this rod produces some very strong and hot sparks. I have had no problems starting a fire by striking sparks into a cotton ball coated with petroleum jelly.

Answer:	Thank you for inquiring. The ferro rod is permanently attached to the wooden handle and cannot be replaced.

Answer:	Yes it can be used in a wood stove, I have found the best way to use the product is place a split log in the bottom of the wood stove flat side up, then put the InstaFire® on the flat piece. Light the granules and then place other wood on a slant, kind of like a lean to, over the flame. Leave about an inch and a half so the fire can breathe. That's the way I've found works best in my stove, could be different for your stove.

Answer:	Sorry, but I don't know the answer to your question. I bought this product for quick tinder to start a fire for camping. I will use it to stay warm in cold weather and to boil water to re-hydrate freeze dried food. Unless others that have used it to cook food can answer your question, you might just try a small order to do some trial and error cooking.

Answer:	This product was specifically made to be safe and storable, Which means a spark by itself will not ignite the product. If you are using flint and steel, you will need a more volatile component such as Magnesium, with a few shavings of Magnesium this product will light right up. Question:	Will the winter blend still be effective in summer months with 90 degree temps
Answer:	The Trekker fire starter is made to be used in most weather conditions. Making a fire in direct rain is nearly impossible. So, if you have some shelter, and only damp or wet tinder - use a good quantity of scraped magnesium. This gives an initial 5000 degree burst of heat. This can allow you to get a fire started where a ferrocerium rod alone may fail. My wife and I have lit fires in damp or wet conditions. Also read the most popular Fire-Fast Trekker review.
Question:	How big are the tins because i read a review that there is only enough for one fire
Answer:	Yes, the handle is made of African hard wood. The wood contains resin that makes it water resistant - we did a test where the fire starter was submerged in water for 4 days and successfully lit a fire within 30 seconds after coming out of the water. Also the handle wood can be scraped and used as tinder - even after being soaked in water for 4 days! At times we have purchased an entire tree and the wood color varies from tan to deep red. Also the edge wood looks like oak - so sometimes there is a "calico" effect where the red color is next to the oak color.

Answer:	I d’loaded a dB meter for my phone and found 104dB max on the app. I hope that helps.
Question:	Should gloves be used when handling this material? Looks like it can easily cut or become embedded in your skin
Answer:	One of the rods is coated with magnesium, the other is just steel. A strong scrape causes sparks of burning magnesium. Directing the sparks onto some kindling (I like to use a boll of dryer lint and some shredded paper) starts the fire. This product has only a light coating of magnesium. I strapped it all off to get a fire going when I was testing it out. I would recommend it as an emergency fire starter only. I don't think even a well-practiced person could get more than 2-3 fires going with this striker. But the addition of the whistle and compass makes it a product worth having in an emergency kit.

Answer:	It is made in China.
Question:	When it says free container, does it mean one extra? As in two separate tins
Answer:	This Ferro Rod showers sparks! Of course, you have to scrape the top layer off first. I only scrape off about 20% of the coating so the coating to extend the life of the rod. I agree that this Rod should provide 100's of strikes...even though the company says 1,000's. Excellent product.
