11 best water purifier hikings

Water purifiers for hiking and outdoor activities are essential tools for ensuring safe drinking water when venturing into the wilderness. Here's what you need to know about water purifiers for hiking:

  1. Purpose: Hiking and outdoor activities often take you to remote areas where access to clean and safe drinking water may be limited. Water purifiers are designed to remove or neutralize contaminants from natural water sources like rivers, lakes, and streams, making the water safe to drink.

  2. Types:

    • Filters: Hiking water purifiers often come in the form of portable filters. These devices use physical barriers, such as ceramic or hollow fiber membranes, to trap bacteria, protozoa, and sediment. Some filters also include activated carbon to reduce unpleasant tastes and odors.
    • Chemical Treatments: Another option is chemical water treatment, typically using tablets or drops containing chlorine dioxide or iodine. These chemicals kill or neutralize harmful microorganisms.
    • UV Purifiers: UV (ultraviolet) water purifiers use UV light to disinfect water by disrupting the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them harmless. They are effective against bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.
  3. Portability: Hiking water purifiers are designed to be lightweight, compact, and easy to carry in a backpack. Many are small enough to fit in a pocket, making them convenient for on-the-go use.

  4. Effectiveness: The effectiveness of a water purifier depends on the method used. Filters are excellent at removing particulate matter and microorganisms but may not be as effective against viruses. Chemical treatments and UV purifiers can be effective against a broad range of contaminants but may require longer contact times.

  5. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential for the proper functioning of water purifiers. Filters may need periodic cleaning or replacement, and chemical treatments have expiration dates. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for maintenance and storage.

  6. Capacity: Consider the capacity of the water purifier when choosing one for hiking. Some models are designed for individual use, while others can purify larger quantities of water for a group.

  7. Backup Methods: It's a good practice to carry multiple purification methods when hiking in case one fails or is ineffective in certain situations. For example, if your filter becomes clogged, having chemical treatments or UV purifiers as backups can be a lifesaver.

  8. Local Water Conditions: Be aware of the water sources available in your hiking area. Different locations may have varying levels of contamination, so it's essential to choose a purifier that suits the specific conditions.

  9. Regulations: Check for any local regulations regarding water purification in the area you plan to hike. Some national parks and wilderness areas have specific rules to protect water sources.

In summary, water purifiers for hiking are crucial for ensuring safe drinking water when exploring the outdoors. They come in various types and sizes, so choose the one that best suits your needs and the conditions of your hiking destination. Regular maintenance and awareness of local water sources are essential for a successful outdoor adventure.

Sawyer Products MINI Water Filtration System

Sawyer Products

Based on 22 reviews Check latest price

Product description

A lightweight, versatile personal filtration system, the Sawyer MINI Water Filter fits in the palm of your hand and has a total field weight of just 2 ounces. Perfect for everything from camping with the kids to traveling abroad where tap and bottle water can't be trusted, the tiny MINI provides 0.1 micron absolute filtration for clean drinking water on the go — filtering out bacteria, protozoa, and microplastics. The MINI filter removes 7 log (99.99999%) of all bacteria (like salmonella) as well as other harmful bacteria which causes cholera and E. coli and 6 log (99.9999%) of all protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidium. These removal rates equal or exceed other filter options. EPA guidelines allow ten times more protozoa left in the water than Sawyer MINI filters allow. The MINI also filters out 100% of microplastics. The MINI 0.1 micron absolute filter houses a cluster of micro-fibrous tubes which use similar technology found in medical dialysis. As water passes through the side walls of the tubes, harmful bacteria and protozoa are trapped on the outer walls so you can be confident your water is safe to drink. Great for outdoor recreation, hiking, camping, scouting, domestic and international travel, and emergency prepping, the Sawyer MINI gives you a number of ways to access clean water. Attach it to the included drinking pouch, use the included straw to drink directly from your water source, connect it to hydration pack tubing (sold separately), or screw it onto standard disposable bottles (28mm thread). Since 1984, Sawyer has used technological advancements to create products that keep you outdoors — from the backcountry to the backyard — including insect repellents for both skin and clothing, water filters for camping and emergencies, and sun protection.

  • Ideal for outdoor recreation, hiking, camping, scouting, domestic and International travel, and emergency preparedness
  • High-performance 0.1 Micron absolute inline filter fits in the palm of your hand and weighs just 2 ounces; 100% of MINI units individually tested three times to performance standards by Sawyer
  • Attaches to included drinking pouch, standard disposable water bottles, hydration packs, or use the straw to drink directly from your water source
  • Removes 99.99999% of all bacteria (salmonella, cholera, and E. coli); removes 99.9999% of all protozoa (such as giardia and cryptosporidium); also removes 100% of microplastics
  • Filter rated up to 100,000 gallons; Includes one Sawyer MINI filter, 16-ounce reusable squeeze pouch, 7-inch drinking straw, and cleaning plunger

User questions & answers

Question: Has the Sawyer Mini gone through End of Life testing in laboratories to ensure that it will ACTUALLY filter 100,000 gallons of water
Answer: NO. Tap water has minerlas, salts, bacteria, etc. These pills only kill bacteria but filter nothing. All the minerals will stay in the water and will break your machine. Use distilled water.
Question: What's the total weight of the full system? (Including the filter, tube, syringe, and pouch) It seems the listed 2 oz refers to the filter alone
Answer: The front of the package states"Proven effective against Giardia lamblia when used as directed". The back states "Potable Aqua Germicidal Tablets have not been shown to inactivate Cryptosporidium cysts." Keri-Lynn, Four Seasons Survival
Question: What is the shelf life for this? Used and properly cleaned or unopened
Answer: I called the company and they said unopened, they expire in Jan. 2017. When the bottles are opened, they expire in one year. The product has no expiration or mfg. dates on the bottles.
Question: Does this filter work with tannin in the water? Also, how about brackish water
Answer: "The colder the water, the less effective the chemical is as a purifying agent. Research has shown that at 50 degrees F (10 degrees C), only 90 percent of Giardia cysts were inactivated after 30 minutes of exposure. If the water temperature is below 40 degrees F (4 degrees C), double the treatment time before drinking. It is best if water is at least 60 degrees F (16 degrees C) before treating. You can place the water in the sun to warm it before treating." - Rick Curtis, The Backpacker's Field Manual.Basically, wait longer: double time every 10 degrees F under 60 to be safest.

Ready for the Backcountry

The ultra-light, easily packable Sawyer MINI water filter fits in the palm of your hand and weighs just 2 ounces — making it ideal for ultralight backpacking and camping, as well as emergency preparedness.

Each MINI comes with a durable, collapsible 16-ounce reusable squeeze pouch that rolls up when empty, so it won't take up space in your pack.

Filtered Water Anywhere

The reusable 0.1 absolute micron MINI water filter produces clean water from freshwater lakes, rivers, and streams, as well as faucets in your home or hotel room while traveling (domestic and international).

The MINI also comes with a straw that enables you to drink filtered water directly from a water source.

Easy Drinking

To start filtering water, simply fill the squeeze pouch with water from your water source, then screw the MINI filter onto the pouch and start drinking right from the MINI or squeeze into a water bottle to share with others.

The MINI also screws onto water or soda bottles with a standard threaded top, and you can attach inline on a hydration pack to filter water from a bladder (sold separately).

Sawyer's International Mission

Sawyer believes everyone deserves access to clean water — from hikers in the backcountry to indigenous people groups in the remotest corners of the world.

For over 10 years, Sawyer has been working with a variety of charities and churches who are on a mission to make a long-lasting impact in the lives of those around the world without access to clean drinking water.

Hollow Fiber Membrane

Sawyer’s water filters are comprised of tiny hollow fiber membranes that allow water to enter into their core through tiny micro-pores.

Thicker fiber walls combined with a smaller inner diameter make Sawyer fibers 75% stronger* than typical hollow fiber membranes, giving you a fast flow and enabling the filter to be continually backwashed forcefully to restore up to 98% of the original flow rate.

* Clean Water Institute of Calvin University; July, 2018

1 Absolute Micron Filtering

Each Sawyer water filter features 0.1 micron absolute filtration, meaning there is no pore size larger than 0.1 micron in size.

This makes it nearly impossible for microplastics, harmful bacteria, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giardia, Vibrio cholerae, and Salmonella typhi (which cause Cholera and Typhoid) to pass through.

Fiber Protection

Sawyer's hollow fiber membranes are fully encased and sealed to keep them protected. When fibers are not enclosed, physical damage of exposed fibers could allow harmful pathogens to pass through.

Tested 3 Times

Every Sawyer filter is performance tested three different times during the manufacturing process for your protection.

Testing occurs after the fiber element construction and twice after casing assembly to ensure no harmful pathogens leak through the sealed case or internal O-rings.

User questions & answers

Question: does it produce only h2o
Answer: Only thing I can find is on the sawyer website is the lifetime warranty so if you read it the will fix/replace the filter for life as long as you dont modify the filter in anyway or open the housing or run juice or drink mixes thru it they will replace it the 100,000 gallon guarantee is to tell you you will have it for life you will lose it beforeit breaks I hope I was of help you can find all the tech data sheets on there website
Question: Is the "ultra filter" just another name for hollow-fiber membrane filter? if not, what is the material in the "uf
Answer: You are right about the 2 ounces being the filter only-that is what Sawyer advertises. The entire unit, inside the packaging is 4.8 ounces. I cannot take it out to weigh the items outside the packaging as I would need to destroy the container to get them out. I am guessing the plastic covering weighs less than an ounce so the entire unit probably weighs about 4 ounces.
Question: Your literature says " removes contaminants from Fresh Water". What about algae covered ponds and swimming pools?s
Answer: This filter is advertised as up to 100,000 gallons by Sawyer. When you begin to notice a decrease in flow, I recommend back flushing with potable water using the included syringe. I normally keep an ounce or two of 90% isopropyl alcohol to sanitize the drinking tip and any tubes I may use when setting up different systems. After use and before long term storage (especially if you filtered a lot of biologically questionable water), it is recommended to run a sanitizing solution of bleach/water (1tbsp plain, unscented bleach to 1 gallon water) through the filter then rinse very well with potable water, shake out vigorously and allow to air dry for several days before capping and placing into storage. An unopened filter should have indefinite shelf life unless it is subjected to extreme temperatures, hot or cold.
Question: Does this filter viruses
Answer: Sawyer's claim for the filter is that it removes 99.99999% of all harmful bacteria and 99.9999% of protozoa. Viruses are not included nor are other impurities mentioned. I have written to Sawyer to ask about tannin and brackish water and will reply again once I receive a return message. I'm not sure when that will be, but hope it will be soon.Keri-LynnFour Seasons Survival

User questions & answers

Question: Does it work for salt water
Answer: NO. I relied on the previous answer when I ordered this, and it does not fit on my 1.75" doors. I fits snuggly on a 1.5" width.
Question: Is this filter effective against Giardia and Cryptosporidium
Answer: We do not have any bar extenders to make this product accessible to a younger child
Question: Should mine have come with instructions
Answer: The drop down bar is 9 inches --- the overall length is 23 1/2 inches.
Question: i cant seem to find the weight of the main unit with uut the bag does someone know how much it weighs dry
Answer: My door opens with clothes hanging from it, though on some of my doors it is a bit of a tight squeeze against the upper door jamb. The amount of opening would depend on the clearance between your door at the full open position and the nearest intervening wall. It does extend a full 11” from the door surface when deployed.

Filtered Water Anywhere

The reusable 0.1 absolute micron Squeeze water filter produces clean water from freshwater lakes, rivers, and streams, as well as faucets in your home or hotel room while traveling (domestic and international).

To start filtering water, simply fill the squeeze pouch with water from your water source, then screw the Squeeze filter onto the pouch and start drinking via the removable flip top cap.

Versatile Hydration

The included adapter kit allows you to install the Squeeze filter inline on your hydration pack (sold separately). Simply fill your reservoir with dirty water and drink safe, clean water through your hydration tube. You can also create a gravity water filtration system using the adapters, included tube/drinking straw, and mesh carrying pouch to hang the Squeeze. The Squeeze filter also screws onto water or soda bottles with a standard threaded top.

Filter Again and Again

The Squeeze filter can be cleaned and reused almost indefinitely with no expensive cartridges to replace… ever.

When water flow begins to diminish, simply perform a backwash to restore up to 98% of the filter’s flow rate and enjoy fresh, clean water wherever you roam.

Question: Can this be used in disaster situations
Answer: No, fresh water only.
Question: I am spending 3 months in South Africa. would this help in this trip
Answer: Knowing how this works .. it would have to be in a water state and not snow or ice state...compressing snow would make it solid and never allow it to pass the filter...You need to melt the snow first...What ever method you can use to do this.....If out in the country... I am sure there are many ways to do this....look up camping heating methods... Second way fill it with snow and let it set near a warm spot till the snow or ice melts in the container then press the water thru....
Question: Will this pump filter out biochemical contaminants from water (terrorist attack
Answer: Used it on week long trip to Boundary Waters. Rugged, reliable, and drop-proof, albeit a tad heavy if you are one of those "ultralight backpacker types". (If in ultra cold conditions I could imagine the material possibly becoming breakable, but in my experience it would still require quite a smashing to affect the thing). I kept getting looks from everyone while using it as I was able to quickly and painlessly purify and replenish my water in under a minute, while everyone else was using pumps and stuff that had to be unpacked, setup, emptied, repacked, etc. It slowed filtering noticeably though over the week (up to 30s for a purifying cycle) but worked just fine and the water tasted great. I asked Grayl, and they attributed it to the tannins in the water which makes perfect sense. I used a length of paracord to tether it to my person to avoid loss while hiking and canoeing without issue (but I always have an unused backup (therefore freeze proof) just in case; lifestraw, sawyer, or equivalent). Fantastic self-contained water apparatus for travel anywhere. I wouldn't use anything else (given the option). Cheers.
Question: Where do you find replacement filters
Answer: It completely depends on how much particulate matter is suspended in the unfiltered water source. Pre filtering dirty water sources (clean rag, T-shirt, etc) helps extend the life of the filter.

User questions & answers

Question: Are replacement filters available
Answer: They ARE narrow. I want a wider size and according to the shoe size chart link, I wanted a 2E, not 4E Ultrawide, BUT Amazon Zappo's only stock the 'normal' Narrow and 4E Ultrawides. @WayneM, there is no 'half size larger' to select, apparently they don't pay attention to what people are buying and they don't bother to restock. I went ahead and ordered the D 'medium' which is actually very NARROW. The shoes came and they just fit me with the laces all the way stretched out. That said, I like them anyway - they're light and the sole is solid. The box only says size 10.5 and No width letter. And they don't show the width letter on the shoe's label either. Good shoe, not great sizing. So, Zappo's / Amazon has some work to do to avoid confusion and returns, just stock the medium wides, please. And start labeling the shoes better.
Question: What is the flow rate
Answer: I've been wearing them for walking for almost a year now. I started walking a few hundred yards a day last summer when I weighed 270 and by fall I was walking 6-8 miles a day! I am down to 190 and my asics venture 5s have finally begun to wear out. I normally wear orthotics but have never put them in the asics and my feet are just fine! As a side note I bought some new balance on sale a couple weeks ago and my feet immediately began to hurt! I am buying another pair of asics venture5s today!
Question: is the storage bag BPA free
Answer: These shoes kick A$$ and take names. These new Matt 5 running shoes are outta names now
Question: Is there any type of warranty for the product or filter
Answer: Yes! They have worked very well for me
