12 best emergency ration bars

Emergency ration bars are compact, lightweight food items designed to provide essential nutrients and sustenance during emergency situations, outdoor activities like camping and hiking, or in any situation where access to regular meals is limited or unavailable. These bars are often associated with freeze-dried food, camp kitchen supplies, camping, hiking, outdoor recreation, and sports and outdoors activities. Here are some key points about emergency ration bars:

  1. Long Shelf Life: Emergency ration bars are known for their long shelf life, which can range from several months to several years. This extended shelf life is achieved through the use of ingredients and packaging that prevent spoilage and maintain nutritional content.

  2. High Calorie Density: These bars are formulated to be calorie-dense, providing a quick source of energy. They typically contain a mix of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to sustain the body's energy needs.

  3. Compact and Lightweight: Emergency ration bars are designed to be easy to carry. They are often vacuum-sealed or packaged in foil to reduce bulk and weight, making them ideal for backpacking and other outdoor activities.

  4. Nutritional Content: While the specific nutritional content may vary among brands and types of ration bars, they are typically fortified with vitamins and minerals to provide a balanced diet in emergency situations.

  5. Variety of Flavors: To cater to different tastes and preferences, ration bars come in various flavors, such as chocolate, fruit, or nut. This variety can help improve the palatability of the bars.

  6. Water Requirements: It's important to note that most emergency ration bars require some water to consume effectively. Water helps with digestion and ensures that the bars are not too dry to eat.

  7. Emergency Preparedness: Emergency ration bars are often included in emergency preparedness kits and survival gear. They serve as a reliable source of sustenance during natural disasters, power outages, or other unexpected situations.

  8. Sustainability: Some manufacturers focus on creating environmentally friendly ration bars by using sustainable ingredients and packaging materials.

  9. Calorie Count: The number of calories in an emergency ration bar can vary, but they are usually designed to provide at least 200-400 calories per bar, depending on the brand and type.

  10. Allergen Information: It's essential to check the packaging for allergen information, as some ration bars may contain common allergens like nuts or dairy.

Emergency ration bars are a practical addition to any outdoor adventure or emergency preparedness plan, providing a convenient and reliable source of nutrition when needed. They are widely available from various outdoor retailers and can be an essential part of your camping, hiking, or emergency gear.

User questions & answers

Question: Where is the emergency ration bar itself manufactured
Answer: mine was august 2023 (expiration) - was produced august 2018
Question: Do these make you poop funny
Answer: the package and design is ment for all climate and conditions good for 5 years that means is favorable conditions I think you could even figure far longer, and all but the most harsh or abusive situations would you have to worry. i'm sure 5 years in an oven or half submerged in semi acidic bilge water or the like as long as you take even cursory measures like don't get them too hot, include a couple of gallon zip locks and your set.
Question: Are the 6 bars in each package individually wrapped? If not, how hard are they to separate
Answer: ...I’m sure if it came down to it where you’re eating these bars to survive, you wouldn’t be concerned about if any were wasted due to you being rescued prior to needing to consume all of them.
Question: Is this gluten free
Answer: plastic, safe for baby.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these dairy-free, by any chance
Answer: if you're hydrating or hydrated with it, it helps. I bought these to test out for my bugout bag and decided to bring them to college with me. I found I could eat the bar most times and not necessarily be hungry but usually left feeling unsatisfied. These are honestly just empty calories. In saying that, they will give your body calories to burn, but i wouldnt rely on them alone unless you had to :)
Question: Does this have tree nuts or peanuts...it is not listed on the label
Answer: Likely not, as the temperature range for food storage like this is "a cool dry dark place" and the dark part, can surely be found in a car, but the temperature in a car can reach something like 190 fahrenheit, so it will last much less time. You could however, find a good insulated storage case, that could lower the transmission of heat, and try testing that. though i have no idea, if they make something meant to store food in a car.
Question: Can you tell me the allergen info of these bars
Answer: I can't speak for the supply at Amazon or the other vendors. but I know mine are dated within the last 30-45 Days. I order from them bi-weekly. I think they have 11-18 on them, maybe 12-18. Please don't order just one from though the cost of shipping for it is 6.35 so I lose money on the order. 3-5 helps a ton.
Question: are these chewy, soft, hard or somewhere in the middle
Answer: for the ones I got there was no inner bag at all just the aluminum vacuumed bag they come in long sticks not blocks or cubes so be careful with the main bag and add a ziplock 1 big or a few smaller, keeping then dry would be the key thing I suspect they wpild be fine for a few weeks or more once opened they are a solid cookie like form but not overly hard not alot of flavor too them. your best bet is to squirrel away some other foods and drinks that you can mix with water to make eating more hopeful.

User questions & answers

Question: What are the ingredients in this? Are they allergen free
Answer: No they are just food bars with a lot of calories, they've never effected me any different than any other food items have.
Question: Where can read about Nutritional information
Answer: They are not individually wrapped. It would be great if they were. Think more like a Hershey or Kit - Kat bar. You can, with a little effort, break a piece off. Hope that helps.
Question: I ordered on march 11. the expected delivery date says may 18??? even though you wrote the delivery date will be 4/29 to 5/6 if i order today
Answer: given the first ingredient listed is enriched whole wheat flour, I'm guessing these bars are not gluten-free.
Question: How long do the individual packages last once opened
Answer: No idea. They are heavy & dense so they are not cheap to ship no matter how you cut it.

SOS Emergency ration bars 3 day/72 hour packs. 5 year shelf life - 5 Packs

User questions & answers

Question: Can these be permanently stored in a car in the southwest desert (temp up to 140 degrees) and remain safe and usable throughout shelf life
Answer: They are "peanut products free" as per their website description.
Question: What is the expiration date
Answer: All I can say are the contents of the bars which is Wheat Flour, Vegetable Shortening, Cane Sugar Coconut and Salt. If you wish to phone the company that manufactures these bars the following is helpful: Tel: 1(337)738-4511 or Fax:1(337)738-5675. The company is Datrex Inc - Kinder, La. USA
Question: these come 9 bars to the brick. is each bar individually wrapped or would all 9 have to be eaten before they spoil
Answer: We tried them out not long ago for a hiking trip and to share with the 4H club. They aren't really chewy and definitely not hard at all. The little "cookies" are packaged in individual plastic wrapping inside the vacuum sealed outer layer. Be careful when you open the individual "cookies" because they are fairly soft and quite crumbly. They taste great! Just make sure to chew thoroughly and have some water handy.
Question: Is the 5-pack '5 individual three day packs,' or 'one large pack?' I would like five three-day packs. Should I order them separately
Answer: Thank you for reaching out regarding the UST Emergency Food Ration Bar. Please be advised that this product is made in the USA. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us at [email protected]. Thanks again for your question!

Answer: When I ordered them they came very quickly not sure what the timeline would be now
Question: What are the ingredients

User questions & answers

Question: What is the expiration date on the bars currently being sold
Answer: the ones I just received were produced in 09/14 which is printed on the bag and the expiration date of 08/19 is also printed on the bag
Question: How much shelf life is left on the product I will receive if I buy now
Answer: 5, 3600 Cal packs of 9, 400 Cal bars. Each bar is rolled in a sheet of celophane type plastic. They are not water tight, so yeah, you have to eat them once you open the outer pack. I just opened on from five years ago. Couldn't pull the slippery sides apart so I had to use a blade. These are just fine and hard as a rock, but you can break them up by hand. Bare minimum emergency food.
Question: If I purchase this product will I get 5 years of shelf life? So expire
Answer: I ordered a single package and it had 9 bars with 400 kcal each bar to see if they were edible. the way it's packaged the 5 pack is just 5 9 bar packs. If you want to wait I plan on ordering the 5 pack myself and I will let you know for sure.
Question: Does it contain peanuts
Answer: You can see the ingredients in the pics. I have no idea what allergens you're most concerned about. Specialty diet survival rations would be quite expensive I'd think.
