Answer:	I think it depends on how big the rat is. The hide house would work for a mouse, but definitely not a rat. My hamster is a 'plus sized' girl and she moves around quite a bit, much better for her than our old cage, but we had to cut the opening of the hide house to make it wider for her to fit in there. She seems to enjoy the extra space so maybe your rat will like it too.

Question:	how tall is the cage only
Answer:	Yes!!! As a former breeder of rats, this cage would be perfect for them!! The space is great and there's no possible way for them to bite thru the steel bars.

Answer:	Yes, but you wouldn't be able to have the floor in between them because you'd have to remove the top of the double nation and the bottom of the single nation to join them. That's how I have mine setup. You basically have one giant open cage on top with just the shelves, and a regular cage in the bottom which can be opened to the top one or not. If you do this, I recommend getting another shelf for the upper cage. It's probably simpler and cheaper to just get the add on version if all you want is a triple level cage. I had a single one I found on craigslist, so it was cheaper for me to do it my way.
Question:	can this be used for grown fancy rats
Answer:	It is big enough. But do not put 2 syrian hamsters together as they will most likely fight and kill the other hamster. 2 Dwarf hamsters would be fine in this cage.

I got rid of the plastic middle anyway because the bottom is clear plastic and with the separator, that is also clear plastic there was not much ventilation and if you live in a place where it gets warmer in the summer it gets VERY HOT in the bottom floor. After I tossed the separator, its a great cage. Fits his bigger wheel, house (he's never been a nester) food bowl and toys.

Answer:	I had this for mice and they all escaped in the same day 😒 Super disappointing. I feel like a dwarf might be able to escape, it’s possible. I ended up giving this whole cage away cause it’s not escape proof, and too small for anything else

Answer:	I believe the tubes would fit a Syrian hamster, but the cage itself much too small for any type of hamster. This cage is 216 square inches. It is commonly agreed that the bare minimum recommended for both Syrian and Dwarf hamsters is 450 square inches, but bigger is always better! This cage seems like would be great for mice, but if you want a good, cheap cage for a hamster I would suggest purchasing a clear plastic bin. It's a cheap and easy option. I bought a $20 clear Christmas tree storage bin for my hamster, it's about 819 square inches. There is plenty of space and I can leave the top off for ventilation! Many commercial cages you see are far too small for hamsters, and the ones that are big enough can be very expensive. Answer:	It is a nice cage if you make some modifications for dwarf hamsters. The wiring is close enough to prevent my Russian dwarf from escaping, but you will need to replace the hamster wheel with a solid wheel. I also removed the wire bottom and replaced it with bedding because her tiny feet slipped through and I backed the ladder with cardboard.
