Then I put the bedding I wanted to use down over the linoleum tiles. Works great. I cut them slightly so they're only a little bigger than the cage, so they don't stick out to far. They're thick and lay nice and flat.

Answer:	I think it depends on how big the rat is. The hide house would work for a mouse, but definitely not a rat. My hamster is a 'plus sized' girl and she moves around quite a bit, much better for her than our old cage, but we had to cut the opening of the hide house to make it wider for her to fit in there. She seems to enjoy the extra space so maybe your rat will like it too.

Answer:	I believe the tubes would fit a Syrian hamster, but the cage itself much too small for any type of hamster. This cage is 216 square inches. It is commonly agreed that the bare minimum recommended for both Syrian and Dwarf hamsters is 450 square inches, but bigger is always better! This cage seems like would be great for mice, but if you want a good, cheap cage for a hamster I would suggest purchasing a clear plastic bin. It's a cheap and easy option. I bought a $20 clear Christmas tree storage bin for my hamster, it's about 819 square inches. There is plenty of space and I can leave the top off for ventilation! Many commercial cages you see are far too small for hamsters, and the ones that are big enough can be very expensive. Answer:	I actually just bought this cage. The package falsely advertises dimensions of 20"L x 11.5"W x 16"H. THE ACTUAL dimensions are only 16"L x 10"W x 14.5"H. I have owned many many small animal cages that were significantly larger than this tiny thing. It's only ok for 1 mouse, small hamster, maybe a gerbil. Since all of these animals are social animals and should be bought and kept in pairs, this is way too small.
