12 best terrarium heat lamps

Terrarium heat lamps are essential equipment for maintaining the proper temperature and environment in reptile and amphibian enclosures. Here's what you need to know about them:

  1. Purpose: Terrarium heat lamps are used to provide supplemental heat to reptile and amphibian habitats, such as terrariums, vivariums, or cages. They help create a suitable temperature gradient, allowing these cold-blooded animals to regulate their body temperature effectively.

  2. Types:

    • Basking Lamps: These lamps provide a concentrated heat source for reptiles that require a basking spot. They mimic the warmth of the sun and are often used for species like lizards and tortoises.
    • Ceramic Heat Emitters (CHEs): CHEs emit infrared heat without producing visible light. They are ideal for providing 24/7 heat and are suitable for animals that require consistent warmth, including nocturnal reptiles.
    • Heat Mats: Heat mats are placed underneath the terrarium to heat the substrate or floor of the enclosure. They are commonly used for reptiles that need belly heat, like some snakes.
  3. Temperature Control: It's essential to have a thermostat or temperature controller to regulate the heat output from the lamp. This ensures that the temperature remains within the appropriate range for your specific reptile species.

  4. Safety: Terrarium heat lamps can become very hot. Ensure that the lamp is securely mounted, and there's no risk of your reptile coming into direct contact with it to prevent burns. Use heat-resistant fixtures and guards if necessary.

  5. Light Output: Some heat lamps also emit visible light, which can be beneficial if your reptile requires both heat and light for its daily cycle. However, for animals that need darkness at night, you may need an additional heat source without light emission.

  6. UVB Emission: Certain reptile species require UVB radiation for calcium metabolism. If your heat lamp also emits UVB, make sure it's suitable for your pet's needs. Not all reptiles require UVB, so check the specific requirements of your species.

  7. Installation: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for safely installing and positioning the heat lamp. The distance between the lamp and the basking spot should be appropriate to achieve the desired temperature.

  8. Maintenance: Regularly inspect the heat lamp and associated equipment for wear and tear. Replace bulbs or emitters as needed to ensure consistent heat output.

  9. Species-Specific Requirements: Different reptile and amphibian species have varying temperature and lighting requirements. Research your pet's specific needs to provide the best care.

  10. Consult a Herpetologist or Veterinarian: If you're unsure about the heating needs of your reptile or amphibian, consult with a herpetologist or veterinarian who specializes in exotic pets. They can offer guidance on creating the right environment for your pet's health and well-being.

Terrarium heat lamps are crucial for maintaining a healthy and comfortable environment for reptiles and amphibians in captivity. Proper temperature regulation is vital for their overall health, digestion, and behavior.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this sit on glass lid facing down? Will the heat shatter glass
Answer: Yes, it can be placed on a glass surface No, glass doesn't shatter because of heat. Glass WILL shatter because of RAPID, RADICAL temperature changes I.E. VERY COLD glass exposed to hot or boiling liquid, and vice versa. Heated/Cooled SLOWLY, will not break glass. It WILL however, reduce the amount of heat transfer slightly, due to the absorption of heat by the glass plate.
Question: can this be clamped to a wire cage? I have a desert tortoise and I live in Az and he is a big so I cant easily put him in a tank
Answer: Yes, but you probably will need to thread a dowel or attach a piece of wood to the side of the wire cage and clamp the lamp to that so it hangs over the cage. Good luck! :-)
Question: What type of bulb shoud I buy for this lamp? I have an aquatic turtle
Answer: i bought this one for mine http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Reptile-Basking-Watts/dp/B0002DIX5O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411648253&sr=8-1&keywords=repti+basking+spot+lamp+50w . i am using a 50w because my tank is pretty full to the top. My bulbs have lasted almost a year and im still on the first one. I hope this helps
Question: Is ti compatible for all bulbs
Answer: This lamp will not work with all bulbs. Several things you need to do to determine compatibility: 1) Wattage. This lamp comes in 3 sizes. The maximum wattages are: 5.5" rated up to 75 watts 8.5" rated up to 150 watts 10" rated up to 250 watts 2) Bulb base. This lamp appears to have an E26 base. Most light bulbs in the US have an E26 base. 3) Bulb shape and size. This lamp is made for R and BR shape bulbs. For example, R20 bulbs will work with this lamp. The number after the R or BR is the maximum diameter of the bulb in eights of an inch. An R20 bulb is 20/8 or 2.5 inches. The sizes of this lamp (5.5", 8.5", 10") correspond to maximum supported bulb diameter. Therefore, an R20 bulb will work with all sizes of this lamp. An R50 bulb will work with some but not all sizes of this lamp. 4) Voltage. You don't really need to look at this. As the product images show, this lamp supports up to 250 V, which will work in pretty much any country (for household usage). You will still have to figure out if your bulb is compatible with your wall socket though.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it fit 220v electricity
Answer: Yes, this reptile lamp fixture can fit 220V electricity. Thanks.
Question: Is a 160 solar glow bob too high for this? And can you put the 160 solar glow and I hate light in this
Answer: It can not work for the 160w sola glow bob.
Question: How do I know what light bulb to buy? I’m getting a leopard gecko. I need a day time basking and night time bulb
Answer: Depends on size of tank
Question: Can this be put on glass
Answer: The heat from the bulbs could potentially shatter the glass of you placed this directly on it... but there are hooks on the top of the fixture so you could suspend the fixture above the glass so it's not touching it. You can buy a lamp stand to hang the fixture above your enclosure or make one yourself. Another idea would be to get a plant hanger/hook and attach that to your wall above your enclosure, then hang the light fixture from that. Hope this helps or at least gives you some ideas.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this inside my chicken coop? we have baby chicks and want to use inside small chicken coop (separate from the hens
Answer: Yes, it can be used in a small coop, that’s how I used it. I also had a temperature gauge to ensure the temperature was accurate, consistent and appropriate for the chicks during their growth process. I liked the ceramic heat lamp because it didn’t produce light at night time. I noticed the chicks slept through the night thoroughly, which I felt was really important. Our chicks are now at nine weeks, outside and doing really well. I may use the heat lamp again this winter in their outside coop if we get some severe cold. Hope this helps.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: China
Question: How far does the heat reach i have 36×18×36 enclosure
Answer: From a distance of 12 inches you will have about an 11 inch radius area hovering at about 90°. The farther away the less heat, and the closer the more heat, etc. I have two over a 75 gallon tank and they do great. Make sure you know what temperatures your creature should be at and always remember they don’t have to be perfect. Reptiles especially can adapt to many environments so the best thing to do is make sure that you keep it consistent! Good luck, and provide the best home you possibly can for your creatures!!
Question: will this fit a 5.5 inch heat lamp
Answer: No

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work for my outdoor sulcata tortoise? he has a rancho/hut usually use a red heat bulb
Answer: I think it will. It emits infrared heat but from elements rather than a bulb. They come in several different sizes so, depending on how cold it gets in your area, you can use a high wattage or low wattage. I live in Colorado and use it in my chicken coop. I use the large one and it cranks out about the same amount of heat that the bulb does. The only glitch is you don't know if it's working or not but I have had mine for a couple years with no problems. Of course, I only use it in the winter but I used to go through several bulbs each winter.
Question: Does this put off any light, even red light
Answer: This kind of heater does no light emitted,it would not disturb normal sleeping habits of reptiles.
Question: I got one from here, how long does it take to heat up
Answer: Heat lamp immediately produces heat. I have 20 gallon turrarium and this lamp wouldn’t warm it up more than low 80’s with my house around 70 degrees. I replaced this lamp with a 150w which works way better.
Question: would this be ok with a Crested gecko? my room is around 45 to 50 degrees
Answer: This power is just right for the temperature you need.

User questions & answers

Question: Where should the probe go if I'm using it for a hedgehog setup
Answer: I just lay mine (I have two; one on each, diagonal end of the cage) on the top of the cage. Then I don't have to worry about my hedgie chewing on the electrical cords. I have thought about placing them under the canvas (the bottom) of the enclosure also. I know that my current readings are slightly warmer than the actual temp where the hegie is due to the fact that the probes are about 7-10 inches above him. These lamps/thermostats work so well. I'm very happy with them. (Note: The digital temp tends to run about 2 degrees cooler than the thermostat setting)
Question: does it light up or just heat
Answer: These bulbs are heat only.
Question: Does the temp control actually adjust the temperature on the ceramic element
Answer: No. The temp control is like a thermostat and adjusts the environment temp. The ceramic element is either off or on.
Question: Can 1 thermostat be connected to 2 lamps
Answer: Thermostats like this have a one time fuse to prevent overload. The thermostat will have a Max amp rating. For instance, I ran two heat mats on this just fine with a splitter but when I added my space heater it exceeded the max amo rating and broke the one time fuse. This fuse is not replaceable.

To use this bulb, the dimmer switch must be completely turned on**

  • Package Dimensions: 32.588 H x 15.494 L x 21.412 W (centimetres)
  • Equipped with a dimmer that allows you to control the heat/light
  • Package Weight: 0.49 kilograms
  • Country of Origin : Taiwan

User questions & answers

Question: Does the dimmer work with the arcadia deep heat projector bulbs
Answer: yes
Question: Is the dome polished inside
Answer: The dome has a reflective, white interior that does a good job of directing the light outward. It's not shiny like polished chrome, but it is a nice reflective white paint, and white is great for reflecting infrared rays from what I've read.
Question: does this lamp come with a spring clip as well to attach to a lamp stand
Answer: Yes the do come with a clip to attach to a tank.
Question: can this be used with a ceramic bulb
Answer: All the various clamp lamps w/ a dimmer can be used with C.H.E.'s (ceramic heat emitters) as well as incandescents, but you cannot dim Mercury Vapor or compact fluorescent lights. If you need to use these dimmable lamps w/ the latter two light-types down the road, I tape the dimmer dial onto Max. and use a timer, power strip or surge suppressor with a toggle (rockerOn/Off) switch. Don't mean to abuse dead equines here, but if you suddenly find yourself a reptile parent there's much so to learn quickly, and confusion persists...

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used as a plant lamp
Answer: Yes
Question: Is this good for hegdehog
Answer: Hedgehog need to be 72-80 that is what it is in my house. I would think these would do the trick if you keep your house at 68 or less. I used this for Organic Chickens. They have to have 8 hours of no light, however, that is when it is the coldest. These keep them warm and it is quiet time. I like these because they are not the HOT HOT that the red lights are. I would think that a hedgehog would not need that hot of a light. If so the 150 Watt or LESS would probably do it. Call your VET. If it got too hot I would hope you would have a place where the hedgehog could go to cool off. Make sure that the light is far above him/her. I am thinking she is in the house?
