User questions & answers
Question: | How much water will this item heat up |
Answer: | It does not heat water per say, it keeps it from freezing. |
Question: | I have a free standing 150 gal trough as a koi tank. will this keep the water warm enough here in so.in |
Answer: | its keeps the water from freezing it should work for that size trough |
Question: | What happened to this heater? It used to turn on hot as soon as you plug it in. Now nothing |
Answer: | Heater has a built-in thermostat which I believe turns on at 40 deg F. Is it likely the water was colder than 40 deg, when it was working? If it was colder than 40, then, and higher, now, that would be the problem. Also, I'm sure you've already checked power at your outlet, but if you're connected through a GFI outlet, even the slightest electrical leakage to ground will trip it when the heater goes into the water. (We're connected through a GFI, and that's been a concern for us.) It's a pretty simple system, so if neither of those checks resolve the problem, I'm afraid the heater may may have just failed. Good luck. Glenn |
Question: | Does this de-icer use a lot of electricity? It seems one review said their power bill went from $80 something to $400 or $500?! Is that possible |
Answer: | Mine didn't. You will be using it in the winter, and like me, I have that going and several heat lamps in the chicken coop. Its plugged into 110 so I don't know how it would draw so much electricity without a fire. Maybe the power bill would have been that much anyway because it is winter not just the one de-icer. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a thermostat where I can set the heater at a certain temperature and forget about it? I have a small wellhouse about 6 x |
Answer: | you mount both side holders to the wall about 1 inch shorter than the spindle. then compress the spindle and insert into the holes on the mounting bracketsremember to face the mounting brackets so the spindle holes face each other and the fastening screws are on the bottom. |
Question: | Is it submersible |
Answer: | I'm pretty sure they were 3/8". Plenty sturdy. The only thing I thought was a little different was the way they were attached to the wall. You put the bracket on the wall and then you hook the bottom of the eschuion and then lift up and snap the top into place. If you haven't hung a lot of towel bars this might present a problem for you. If you take your time, think through it and follow the instructions you should be ok. For the money and compared to Home Depot type bars this was comparable. |
Question: | How hot will this heat |
Answer: | I don't know for certain, but I imagine it could but the strength of the structure would suffer. I put our bath mat on the front lower bar and the larger longer towels on the back two bars. The house we bought didn't have towel racks in the master bath so this really helps in our situation. Our towels also dry pretty quickly on this rack. |
Question: | Can this product be used under a plastic horse waterer |
Answer: | So far it appears to be rust resistant. Has been in our very busy bathroom for about 6 months now and has held up remarkably well with no signs of wear or tear yet. Really pleased with this! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used in a concrete birdbath |
Answer: | I love mine, I’m 135lbs and 5’2” and I went with a large to ensure I it was comfortable and that both my son had plenty of room once he started to grow 😊 Be careful with machine washing as the thread is really thin.... |
Question: | Can you use an extension cord |
Answer: | The baby can face outward. There isn’t actually anything holding the baby, since this is intended to be used with a carrier. So if you have carrier where your baby is facing outward this would work, you could just tuck in the hood |
Question: | Is this thermostat controlled |
Answer: | Not that I know of |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why does this clearly state it comes with Thermostatically controlled with an automatic shut-off yet everyone comments below that it has no on or off |
Answer: | thermostatically controlled means that once the water reaches a certain warm temperature, it doesn't turn on the electric in the coil. If the water is cold it comes on and stays on. |
Question: | Can this work okay in a 55 gallon water storage tank? It is plastic and I would not want it to melt the container |
Answer: | I would use chicken wire or some lightweight wire to wrap cage to prevent direct contact with the plastic. I've used in the commercial horse tanks that are composite plastic but have always built a cage - just to be safe. Remember, these are heating just enough to keep the water from freezing. |
Question: | Is it really necessary to bring indoors when not in use? Can't I just keep it in a garage |
Answer: | Mine always was in my horse water tub in the winter and just in the barn at other times. I can't see any reason for having it indide your house. |
Question: | Is there a smaller cage for the size |
Answer: | When I bought mine I only found one size. I don't think you could go smaller with out allowing the heater element closer to any point of contact, and the idea of the cage is to prevent the element from getting too close to anything it might damage. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the diameter of the plug for this? - I'd like to put it on a different tank |
Answer: | Our birdbath is concrete and it works fine. |
Question: | Mine didn't come with the rubber washer it says you need to install. Was it supposed to? Seems like a mistake |
Answer: | Yes. I use a heavy duty outside extension cord on mine with the Farm Innovators connection cover to keep moisture out. I also purchased the water-tight cord lock & Rain Block Weatherproof Gaskets. |
Question: | How do you install this? Do you place the cord through from the inside of the tank to the outside then it screws into the drain plug? Does this mean |
Answer: | Yes it is thermostat controlled but not manually. The unit will turn on when the water temperature approaches freezing condition and will heat the water 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit and will then shut off. |
Question: | What is the continuous amp draw |
Answer: | Should fit loose to give you more room to grow |

User questions & answers
Question: | I need this heater to get up to 86 degrees f will it let me if I wired in a thermostate |
Answer: | This deicer has an internal thermostat to turn the unit on/off at 36-38 degrees. This heater is not designed to heat water to the temp you need. You will need a bucket heater. |
Question: | how long is the cord |
Answer: | I'd say it is about 3'. I would have to go measure it. Mine are all in use right now. Some reach a stall plug but most are on extension cords. |
Question: | Can this be used with power strip or extention cord |
Answer: | This heater is rated at 1500 watts. It is not recommended to be used with an extension cord, however, if one must be used, make sure it is heavy enough wire to handle the power needed. |
Question: | Can I get a replacement nut for this deicer |
Answer: | Yes. Not sure if they have them on Amazon but I got one at tractor supply. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this heater work in a 100gallion tank |
Answer: | I use this heater in a 330 gallon rain tank. If the temperature drops into the teens or single digits, I may have to break a thin skim of ice at the opening on top, but I love it. |
Question: | At 1500 Watts, does this use a lot of electricity? This de-iced the entire 5x13 pond instead of just a hole like pond de-iced. Overkill maybe |
Answer: | I do not experience high electric use. I use 3 of these 1500 units. Each pen has its own water pan with a de-icer. These units work well in the heavy plastic water trough with low sides that my ducks use. |
Question: | I'm so confused, are de-icers different from heaters? I need to keep my 100 gallon pond at a minimum 65 degrees for winter, will this do the trick |
Answer: | a DE-ICER keeps the water from freezing only. It will not heat the water to 65 degrees, just to the temp to keep from freezing. This is only good for a HEATING CAPACITY - This stock tank heater heater is recommended for 100-300 gallons of water. What you need is a heater only not a deicer. |
Question: | I have a 200 gallon truck-bed polyethylene tank to haul potable water. will this DTS15 keep the water from freezing at outside temps of -20 to -30f |
Answer: | Yes it would. I have 200 Gallon trough for the bulls and another 200 Gallon pond for the ducks and it keeps the water from freezing in Minnesota. We do get -20 and-30 temps. You're good to get this water heater it is really worth the money. Thanks |

User questions & answers
Question: | How hot does the actual unit get. Can you touch it or move it while it's on without getting burned |
Answer: | I have never actually touched it but if you move it while on, using a pair of gloves would not hurt. The unit does very well keeping water warm at our 6000 ft. and above level all winter We like the shape as it is easy to put in the bottom of any kind of water bucket. Our containers are about 5-10 gallon. Check out the details on the description for any other questions. The one we had before lasted about 3 years. |
Question: | how long is the cord |
Answer: | The manufacturers website says 10 ft cord. BDT250 Bird Bath De-Icer With Aluminum Base 250 Watts, 120 Volts* Compact, Durable, Aluminum Heating Element* PTFE Non-stick Coating* Low Profile* Large Surface Area for Cooler Operation* Multiple Thermostats for Safe, Optimized Control* Over-Temperature Protection* 10 Foot Cord with Abrasion Protector* cULus Listed* Three Year WarrantyThe BDT250 has a durable, non-stick coating, compact aluminum base in a low-profile design. Fins provide large surface area to make the unit run cooler while putting out the same amount of heat as conventional de-icers. Channels within the base promote water flow as the water is heated. Cooler running, non-stick coating, and flowing water all combine to reduce mineral buildup. Multiple thermostats allow efficient control while providing over-temperature protection. The BDT250 is safe to use in plastic bird baths and comes with a 10 foot cord. |
Question: | What is diameter of heater unit |
Answer: | This heater measures 4.75" in diameter. |
Question: | Will this heater fail if the container goes dry |
Answer: | I bought one of these a couple years ago to keep water from icing over in a 4' kids pool I use for my ducks once the pond ices over in our bitter cold winters in northern Vermont. One time a hole developed in the bottom of the pool and the water left but the heater still worked. Note this is very low wattage intended for smaller buckets than what I was using, but because the little pool was so shallow (and plastic) I was hesitant for a higher wattage unit. It did the job as expected, but when the temp was 20 degrees below zero for days on end, the whole thing was a solid block of ice. Just banged it out and started with fresh water each morning. Happy ducks until debris finally killed it. (Make sure you clean it well if you are using it where debris will be a concern - ducks make a lot of debris.) Not the units fault. Got another one for this winter. Gonna be even colder. The instructions say to place it in the freezer to test it, as the thermostats are triggered by cold, not water. Should not be a big deal. User questions & answers
Question: | There's no picture of the instructions. How much do you need to condition per gallon of water |
Answer: | I have only used them in rubbermaid tanks. They are designed for them because of the thread design. |
Question: | Is this the only chemical I need to set up a new beta tank |
Answer: | I have had several of these & they should have the rubber washer. It seals the hole and keeps it from leaking. Call the manufacturer they should send them to you. |
Question: | Is betta fix the same as meta fix |
Answer: | If you have a Rubbermaid tank, there is a hole at the bottom of the tank that is used for this heater. Simply run the cord through the hole and use the plastic nut and gaskets to secure to the heater. Really a simple install with a Rubbermaid tank. If using another brand of tank, you will have to cut a hole in the tank the size of the treads on the heater. It willl then install easily! Good luck !! |
Question: | how many drops should i add per gallon? thanks |
Answer: | No. Only activates when the air temp gets to about 30. |

An aquarium is a closed environment and in order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. The 5 common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH - all of which may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly with API MASTER TEST KITS or API 5-IN-1 TEST STRIPS. It is also a good time to add API STRESS ZYME to keep your aquarium & gravel clean.
Change 25% Water Every 2 Weeks
In a closed aquarium environment there are no natural rivers or streams to carry away debris and other waste materials. It is important to renew 25% of the aquarium water every two weeks. When you change the water, it is important to know that tap water contains chemicals that make it safe for us to drink but harmful for fish, therefore add a water conditioner such as API STRESS COAT.
Restore Your Ecosystem Monthly
It is important to change your filter media & clean gravel monthly, however in doing so it can disrupt the fragile ecosystem of your aquarium. Use API QUICK START to strengthen it with ‘beneficial’ nitrifying bacteria that will naturally consume toxic compounds and help prevent fish stress. Also recommended when starting a new aquarium or changing the water.

User questions & answers
Question: | How large is opening around de-icer?My 8,000 gal pond is all frozen except 3"opening only on one side of de-icer. Thought it would melt all around it |
Answer: | We have about a 1,000 gallon decorative pond and all the ice is melted from the de-icer. |
Question: | Should I always keep it plugged in? It consumes a lot of electricity and I wonder whether to turn it on only when the temperature is below freezing |
Answer: | It has a built in thermostat that turns it on when the water temp is below 45f, however that may mean it is on often depending on your winter temps, so I would unplug it when temps are above freezing. You can also buy a temp controlled plug to plug it into, which then plugs into the outlet, and you can buy one that turns on at 30f or 20f etc. |
Question: | Is it safe for turtles |
Answer: | It is safe for large Koi, but we have no turtles |
