12 best betta foods

Betta fish, also known as Siamese fighting fish, have specific dietary needs to stay healthy and vibrant. Here's what you should know about Betta fish foods:

  1. Pellets: Betta pellets are a popular choice for feeding these fish. High-quality Betta pellets are designed to meet their nutritional requirements. They contain a balanced mix of protein, fats, and other essential nutrients. It's important not to overfeed them with pellets, as it can lead to obesity.

  2. Live and Frozen Foods: Betta fish can also benefit from live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. These foods provide variety and can be a treat for your Betta. However, they should be used in moderation, as overfeeding can lead to digestive issues.

  3. Freeze-Dried Foods: Freeze-dried foods such as freeze-dried bloodworms and brine shrimp are a convenient option. They are shelf-stable and can provide a varied diet for your Betta.

  4. Flakes: While Bettas can eat flake foods, it's generally recommended to provide them with pellets or live/frozen foods, as these are more nutritionally balanced.

  5. Frequency: It's important to establish a feeding routine for your Betta. Typically, feeding them 2-3 times a day with small portions is sufficient. Avoid overfeeding, as it can lead to health problems.

  6. Special Dietary Considerations: Some Bettas may have special dietary requirements due to health issues. If you notice any health problems or unusual behavior, consult with a veterinarian or a knowledgeable aquarium specialist for guidance on appropriate foods and care.

  7. Water Quality: In addition to proper feeding, maintaining good water quality is crucial for the health of your Betta. Regular water changes and a properly cycled aquarium are essential.

Remember that the specific dietary needs of Betta fish can vary from one fish to another, so it's important to monitor your Betta's health and adjust their diet as needed. Additionally, always choose high-quality Betta fish foods from reputable brands to ensure your fish gets the best nutrition.

Fluval Bug Bites Color Enhancing Fish Food for Betta Fish, Flakes for Small to Medium Sized Fish, 0.63 oz., A7366, Brown

Rolf C. Hagen

Based on 88 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Fluval Bug Bites is a complete fish food that features a unique insect-based formulation, enriched with multiple quality proteins and carbohydrates that are ideal for betta fish. Bug Bites Flakes are specifically formulated to address the natural, insect-based feeding habits of fish, with added vitamins, minerals and other trace nutrients important to their health and vitality. As bettas predominantly feed on insects and larvae in the wild, they will greatly benefit from the rich Black Soldier Fly content (#1 ingredient). This formula is also fortified with krill and shrimp for superior palatability and color enhancement. Most freshwater fish are omnivores and regularly feed on insects in the wild. However, not all insects are created equally when it comes to a fish’s diet. Bug Bites are formulated with sustainably harvested Black Soldier Fly Larvae (#1 ingredient across all formulas), which are raised on fruits and vegetables for exceptional “super food” nutrition. Using a unique cultivation process, BSFL are grown under controlled conditions for total sustainability that preserves natural environments. Under controlled conditions, Black Soldier Flies produce larvae, which naturally feed on decaying organic matter. Unconsumed fruits and vegetables are used as larvae feed. The larvae consume the feed, converting the nutrients into protein and healthy fat. After a 2-week feeding cycle, the larvae are harvested and dried. The dried larvae are mixed with other high-quality proteins, vitamins, minerals and trace elements to offer a complete and balanced daily diet. In addition to BSFL, Bug Bites offer other excellent protein sources such as Herring & Shrimp Meal, which are also rich in Omega-3 for healthy skin, scales, fins and colors. Unlike big brand fish foods, Bug Bites are always prepared in small batches for superior control and quality assurance. The proximity of our ingredients (most of which are delivered right before production) also offers maximum freshness, which translates into better palatability.

  • Betta fish food that contains up to 40%, nutrient-rich Black Soldier Fly Larvae, the first ingredient
  • High in multiple proteins like whole salmon – rich in Omega 3 and 6 for healthy skin, scales and fins
  • Fortified with essential vitamins, amino acids and minerals for a balanced daily diet
  • Feed as much as fish can eat in two minutes, two or three times daily
  • Sustainably processed in small batches for quality control and maximum freshness
  • Age range description: All Life Stages

Question: I recently bought this food and it’s dying the water a pinkish color in 2 separate tanks! I only feed a small pinch! Is this happening to anyone else
Answer: Yes, did for me also. I have a 3.5 gallon tank for my beta. I did a 1/4 water change and have also added live plants. I am still using the fist food but the water is now clear. I think the plants help.

User questions & answers

Question: Hello! I am a bit new to keeping bettas, so I would just like to know if these should be fed only as a treat for bettas
Answer: Thank you for your interest in this product, Montana L.! We recommend this to be used as a treat only, a couple of times a week.
Question: How much should I get for a betta fish
Answer: Just poke a small hole in the foil and 1-2 taps is all you need. I have tropical flakes that I give mine in the morning and this at night. One bottle will easily last 3+ months with one betta. They will only eat a few worms and leave the rest to sink to bottom of tank. So, don't give them as much as you would with flakes...Unless you like cleaning the tank more often.

Answer: Hi there! These pellets are approx. 1.5 mm.
Question: Whats the average time that this thing will last without expiring? Expiration date

User questions & answers

Question: What is the size (mm) of these pellets
Answer: 2 mm long and 1-2 mm in diameter.
Question: will these work for gold fish
Answer: Hi Mark, As Tamara stated, bettas require a higher protein and different nutrition than goldfish. So it is okay to feed betta food as a treat or a temporary diet, but ideally, you want a goldfish diet. We recommend http://a.co/4KsGtmg.
Question: Will this keep my goodish beta healthy without a plant
Answer: I don’t see why not but this won’t make your betta happier like a plant will. I have 2 bettas eating this currently one is in a planted 20 community tank while the other is in a 10 with a few feeder guppies. Both are doing very well and are happy. I have “floaters” on the surface for my betta with no plants and she likes to “hide” under them. Maybe a floating decoration would help to make your betta happier.
Question: This food turned my white/opal betta fish into a pink colored fish. Anyone can reckoned a non-color boosting food betta food
Answer: Maybe it has the marble/koi gene. They change colors on their own regardless of food.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the flakes float on top? I been feeding the Betta pellets and some will float down to the bottom

Question: Can I feed this to a goldfish instead of a betta
Answer: not shire but it is good for fresh water fish I assum that applies to gold fish too?

User questions & answers

Question: What does the date at the bottom mean? it is the expiration date? Mine says
Answer: Yes, this is the expiration date Jaime. You will need to replace the food with a new can.
Question: Is this a good treat for goldfish? I got two pet goldfish in a 20 gallon tank and I have no treats for them at the moment
Answer: I don’t have gold fish right now but goldfish are gobblers.... I think they would love it!
Question: Would a comet goldfish and black kuhli loaches eat this
Answer: The goldfish would for sure, but the loaches may not since it floats and does not sink. If it were to sink, they would definitely eat it.
Question: Is this ok for Bettas or African Dwarf Frogs
Answer: I've fed these to my Betta but he seems to prefer traditional tropical flakes or even something like blood worms to these shrimp. These shrimp are on average the size of a blood worm but maybe double the thickness - they almost seem unnaturally big for my Betta to want to eat. Not sure about frogs.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work for goldfish
Answer: I don't know for sure however it is food for fish and goldfish are known to like anything. So I'd say yes, why not, but you may need to put in 2 feeders depending on the size of the fish.
Question: Will this work in a 1.5gal tank for 1 betta
Answer: Please do not use this product if you care about well-being of your fish. Fish does not care to eat the inclusions, and tons of artificial coloring (which is not listed on the ingredients list, by the way) create horrible unlivable cloud (in my case it was red). Even with the running filter my Fish has died. I had to totally empty and clean the tank, plants and gravel after that.
Question: Will this work for 1 betta fish in a bowl
Answer: Yes
Question: Do these float? Because betta's like to eat from the surface
Answer: They sink. And they killed my betta within minutes of dropping it in the bowl. I would not buy this. An automatic timed battery powered feeder that you place on the top of the bowl or tank will release regular food daily.

User questions & answers

Question: do the pellets float
Answer: Yes float very good
Question: How many pellets a day for a betta? I assume 15-30 a day as per the package is too much. (Have been doing 2 in the morning
Answer: Hello answer to you question is yes you are giving your betta way to many pellets per feeding esp. if you are feeding it to them all in 1 meal. Best way to feeding your betta's is to give them just a few at a time to see how much they are actually eating if they eat all the few approx.5 pellets at a time and they still want more then give them just a few at a time. If you keep feeding them all 15-30 per each feeding you will be wasting the pellets. So Just Feed Them A Few At A Time Till They Are Full Do NOT Feed them all the Pellets At 1 Time/feeding.Hope this helps it is always best to feed your fish a little at a time is a lot easier to feed small amounts at a time Please Do Not Over Feed. Is much easier to add a bit at a time than to try to remove all the extra that fall to the bottom of the tank. You can feed them up to 3 times per day Just Don't Over Feed Best Wishes and have a great day :)
Question: Does the pellet float? Don't bettas like to eat food that floats on water
Answer: Yes the pellets float, bettas like to eat from the waters surface
Question: Is it normal for betas not to eat when you first get them? Do they need to be kept warm? Can i use warm water for him, I do not have a thermometer
Answer: You can use a people thermometer in the new water if u don't have a fish thermometer needs between 74 to 80 degrees
