13 best reptile tank kit
A reptile tank kit, also known as a reptile starter kit or reptile enclosure kit, is a package designed to provide the basic essentials for housing and caring for pet reptiles. These kits are typically tailored to specific reptile species and their habitat requirements. Here are some common components you might find in a reptile tank kit:
Enclosure: The kit includes a suitable enclosure or terrarium for the reptile. The size and design of the enclosure can vary depending on the species, but it often includes a secure lid or top to prevent escapes.
Heating and Lighting: Reptiles often require specific temperature and lighting conditions to thrive. Kits may include heat lamps, UVB lighting, or ceramic heaters to create the necessary environment.
Substrate: Substrate is the material that lines the bottom of the enclosure. It varies based on the reptile's needs and can include options like reptile carpet, coconut coir, or sand.
Decor and Accessories: Kits may include decorations such as hiding spots, branches, rocks, and artificial plants to create a more natural and enriching environment for the reptile.
Thermometers and Hygrometers: To monitor temperature and humidity levels within the enclosure, kits often include these essential measuring tools.
Feeding and Water Dishes: Reptiles need access to fresh water and suitable dishes for feeding, which are typically included in the kit.
Food: Some kits may include a sample of reptile food appropriate for the specific species, but you'll likely need to purchase additional food separately.
Care and Maintenance Items: Kits might provide basic care items like a reptile care guide, cleaning supplies, and feeding tongs.
Heating and Temperature Control: Some kits may include a thermostat or temperature controller to maintain the proper temperature range within the enclosure.
It's important to note that not all reptile species have the same habitat requirements, so you should choose a kit that is designed for the specific type of reptile you plan to keep. Additionally, while reptile tank kits can be a convenient way to get started, you may need to purchase additional items or make adjustments to the enclosure as your reptile grows or to meet its unique needs.Proper research and understanding of your chosen reptile's care requirements are crucial for providing a healthy and comfortable living environment.
Below you can find our editor's choice of the best reptile tank kit on the marketA reptile tank kit, also known as a starter kit, is a convenient package designed for pet owners who are just starting with keeping reptiles as pets. These kits typically include essential items necessary for setting up a suitable habitat for reptiles. Here's what you can expect to find in a typical reptile tank kit:
Enclosure or Tank: The kit often includes a glass or plastic enclosure or terrarium suitable for the specific type and size of reptile you intend to keep. The size of the tank will vary depending on the species of reptile.
Heat Source: Most reptiles require a heat source to maintain the appropriate temperature within the tank. Starter kits may include heat lamps, ceramic heat emitters, or heating pads to create a temperature gradient within the enclosure.
Lighting: Many reptiles need access to proper lighting to mimic their natural habitat. Starter kits may include UVB lighting for reptiles that require it, such as diurnal (daytime-active) species.
Substrate: Substrate refers to the material placed at the bottom of the enclosure. It provides a comfortable and natural substrate for the reptile to move on and helps with maintaining humidity. Common substrates include coconut coir, reptile carpet, or sand, depending on the species.
Decor and Accessories: Reptile tank kits often include some basic decorations like rocks, branches, or plants to create a more natural environment for the reptile. These items also serve as hiding spots and climbing opportunities.

Food and Water Dishes: Kits may include food and water dishes suitable for the size of your reptile.
Care Guides: Some kits include care guides or basic care instructions to help beginners get started with reptile care.

Different reptiles have varying temperature, lighting, and humidity needs, so tailoring the habitat to match their natural environment is crucial for their well-being.
Always remember that while starter kits can be a convenient way to get started, you may need to customize the enclosure further to meet the specific needs of your pet reptile as it grows and develops. Regular maintenance, monitoring, and attention to your reptile's health are also essential for successful reptile keeping.

User questions & answers
Question: | would this be a good basking spot for a red-eared slider |
Answer: | This is not designed to hold water. Please contact us at 1-888-255-4527 and we can offer assistance. |
Question: | Would this be good for a Savannah |
Answer: | It would be too small |
Question: | Will this work for a created geco |
Answer: | The size will for a juvenile up to about 6 months of age when it will need a larger habitat. That said, Geckos are tropical so the tropical starter kit would be a better choice |
Question: | would this be good for a bearded dragon |
Answer: | It would be fine for a small bearded dragon, but how big do they get? It's the standard glass aquarium you see for all small land and water animals. Ours is holding a baby snake, so we'll have to move up in size once it grows. Make sure you're distinguishing between the tropical model vs the desert model. The tropical one includes one heat lamp, with a daylight bulb, and an under-aquarium heat pad. There is no night/UVB bulb, or dome. The desert model includes two dome lamps with day and night bulbs, but no under-aquarium heat pad. So choose according to which items a bearded dragon needs most. The only other difference is the color of the bottom covering--one is sand colored and one is green. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this going to be too small for an adult crested gecko |
Answer: | You really want your adults to be in a 20 gallon container, 11 gallons is fine through the juvenile stage, but not a long term solution. I have my 2 crested geckos in a 18x18x24 and it's big enough for them through adult stage at roughly 30 gallons. |
Question: | Is it a 20 or more gallon tank |
Answer: | It would be smaller than a 20 gallon. A 20 Gallon Zilla Critter Cage is 24 x 12 x 16 (LWH) and this is 12 x 12 x 18 so this is only slightly more than half of the cubic space |
Question: | I live in a cold environment is the light bulb a heat bulb |
Answer: | Yes, the light can be used as a heat bulb for a tank this size , however be careful with this perticular bulb as the bulb itself gets very hot and should only be used with the screen covering that comes with the tank |
Question: | How would this tank fare for ball pythons |
Answer: | It would not be fit for a ball python of any age. |

User questions & answers
Question: | good for a corn snake |
Answer: | My wife has a pueblen milk snake. A corn snake is approximately the same size. I'd say it's good for a corn snake. |
Question: | About how long would it take a baby king snake to outgrow this habitat |
Answer: | It wouldn't. A 20 long tank would be fine for it's entire life. However, for a baby or young adult (approx. under 2 years) use a 10 gallon. Too much room can cause stress (which could possibly lead to death) for a young snake. King's reach around 3.5 ft. I have a 5 ft cornsnake and a 20L tank will be all he needs. Hope this helped. EDIT: If this tank was purchased for a baby or young snake, you MUST have MANY places for it to hide so it feels safe. Or as mentioned above the stress could be fatal. |
Question: | how many gallons is the tank |
Answer: | 30x12x12 is 20 gallons. This is a terrarium and I don't think that these are made to hold water though. |
Question: | Will it fit a 22 inch blue eyed luci |
Answer: | Do not buy this product. It will break on shipping and you will have to go buy a new tank. I can tell you first hand and read the reviews. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long doesn the UV light need to be on for, it didn't come with instruction of how much time to leave it on |
Answer: | Ten hours a day should be about right. When I first got this turtle tank, I had just found an injured hatchling turtle in my driveway, about which I knew nothing. For the first few weeks, I kept the light on only a few hours in the evening, because I figured that Grendel the Turtle got plenty of sunlight during the day through the southern window that I ensconced him by. I didn't know that Grendel wasn't getting the light that he needed through the window until he woke me up one night belting out that great old tune "Let the Sunshine In!" by The Fifth Dimension. That's when I learned that sunlight through glass didn't do the trick for Grendel. I've since learned from reputable authorities that keeping the light on ten to 12 hours a day will suffice. |
Question: | I did not receive the bulb with my tank. What is the wattage so I can buy one from the store |
Answer: | Thank you for your question and we really apologize for the inconvenience. We will send one out ASAP, if you can send us an email with your contact and address. The email can be found on the product card the filter was shipped in. Again we truly apologize for the inconvenience. |
Question: | Does your turtle ever climb out |
Answer: | We have a very small Turtle, 1.5 inches in diameter. The sides are easily 3.5 inches. Leave the non-water area level with rocks so it can't climb. Works well so far for the Turtle's size. |
Question: | does the UV light lamp burn the plastic tank |
Answer: | It might if you placed the bulb directly onto the plastic frame, but I can't imagine you doing that. More important, though, the Totally Terrific Turtle Teachers that I've read seem generally agreed that you should keep the light a foot to a foot-and-a-half above your turtle's shell. So ensuring that your turtle isn't toasted will also ensure that your turtle tank doesn't pull a Wicked Witch of the West and melt. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you take off the lid |
Answer: | Yes, you can. It's actually a great set up. My son has 2 small turtles in it and loves it. |
Question: | Can you use this for bearded dragons too |
Answer: | The tank and lighting would work well for a bearded dragon, yes. The other items that come with it are more designed for turtles though. If you would like more help, email [email protected]. |
Question: | Can i add some schooling fish in the tank too |
Answer: | Thank you for asking a question, Voon Huang Chyuan! This tank can be filled with water and used as a fish tank, if you wish to do so. Fish added to tanks containing turtles, however, will most likely be eaten unless they can blend into the decor. Additionally, turtles are extremely dirty animals, and fish may not do well, health-wise, in a turtle tank. |
Question: | Why does my turtle water get algue so quikly... Help |
Answer: | This is a GREAT question, Eduardo V.! I am so glad you asked, because it is all about the proper environment and care for the turtle! First, a turtle requires a minimum of 10 gallons of water for every inch of shell diameter. So a 5 inch turtle, for example, requires a tank with 50 gallons of water in it. Second, they require a partial water change of at least 25% (1/4) once a week. Third, they require a lot of filtration. The tank and filter pictured here, for example, is suitable for hatchling turtles up to about 2." in size. A hatchling is the diameter of a quarter to give you an idea. It's a great starter tank for baby turtles, and if you are diligent about care, can work for about a year to a year and a half. Adult turtles of 5" or more should be housed in tanks of 75 gallons or larger, with their water filtered by large canister filters. Algae accumulates due to an over abundance of waste. This can also be due to the diet that that is being fed. Turtles have nutritional needs, just like any other animal, and lettuce, hamburger, goldfish, etc., are not included in those needs. Feed a diet such as http://a.co/5an1oLn, which has been formulated specifically through much research for turtles, with a reduction in waste in mind as well. This food comes in Baby, Juvenile, and Adult formulations to meet a turtle's dietary needs at different stages of their life. It has been proven to reduce the amount of waste and odor the turtle produces. Please let me know if you have any other questions! My email is [email protected]. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I don't want to use for an animal/insect so can the mesh be removed from the lid just leaving the screen to use as cover? Thanks |
Answer: | Yes, i have 1 i use just as a planted terarrium for cacti and i have the top removed so the plants can grow without hitting the top. |
Question: | will this terrarium work for a bearded dragon |
Answer: | No. Bearded Dragons grow very fast and a juvenile would outgrow any of these tank sizes within a year. I learned the hard way and had to buy a couple of tanks in the first year I got mine. A long 20 gallon terrarium accommodated her for maybe 6-8 months and after that I upgraded her to a 50 gallon. The basking rock, food dish and water dish (which they love) take up a lot of space too so that's something to consider also. |
Question: | Regarding the exo terra mini (Wide) what are the dimensions of the bottom underneath the door? Looking to make the bottom part a "tank |
Answer: | Roughly 4 - 4.5 inches |
Question: | Would this tank (12x12x12) be good for a baby corn snake? Or would the next size up be better |
Answer: | I would recommend the 18x18x18. Something I've been told is that your snake tank should be at least as long as your snake. He might be a baby now, but in another 6-12 months, the 12x12x12 is gonna be too small and you'll have to buy a new one. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be okay for a baby leopard gecko? I have read that baby geckos can get stressed out if the tank is too big |
Answer: | You'll hear that about a lot of animals. What stresses animals (ball pythons, baby geckos, betta fish, etc) out isn't the size of the enclosure, it's the open space. They feel exposed, because their instincts want them to avoid situations like that so predators won't get them. Just fill the space with hiding spots and climbing things and all that good stuff, and they'll be fine. The only other issue can be finding food in such a big space, but with baby animals, you generally want to tong-feed them or give them a bowl anyway. Don't just pour crickets in. You should probably go ahead and get the 24x18x12, though, that extra chunk of space is ideal. |
Question: | how many gallons is it |
Answer: | Approximately 16.8 gallons |
Question: | Can I use this for a male mouse |
Answer: | Don’t see why not! Plenty of space! But the rock background is styrofoam so I suggest taking it out if you’ll be housing a mouse in there. |
Question: | Can this be used for an adult leopard gecko |
Answer: | Yes there is plenty of room for an adult leopard gecko, |

REPTI ZOO Flat Packed Mini Glass Terrarium
Glass terrariums are the preferred choice of professional Herpetologists. They offer the best viewing for your animal; they are suitable for damp and humid conditions, are hygienic and easy to clean.Glass also maintains the correct heat gradient more safely and easily-maintaining the correct heat gradient is critical to a reptile’s and amphibian’s well-being as they use external heat sources in their environment to regulate their body temperatures.
In the wild these animals move around within their habitat (from sunlight to shade, or from above ground to burrows, for example) to regulate their body temperature. If they get too cool, their metabolism slows (and in conditions that are too hot or too cold, they enter states of inactivity or hibernation).
Maintaining the appropriate temperature is vital to bodily functions such as digestion. It is important to provide the proper temperature conditions in order for the animal to grow and thrive.
For many reptiles, it is not simply a matter of providing a constant temperature, however. They require a thermal gradient, or a range of temperatures from a high end to a low end. Thus, the animal can move to a higher temperature or lower temperature to suit its needs at any given time.

Question: | Our turtle is about 5 inches long and 3 inches across, it is full grown. Would this be suitable |
Answer: | No, definitely not! This is too small. This is OK for a couple of babies. I do turtle baby rescue, and I use a small plastic swimming pool from Walmart, $6. I build rock enclosures in there for them and they can both swim and also climb up on the rocks. Have to clean it every two days, but it stays outside on my front porch on table. About 3 feet across. |
Question: | If you use this tank for a soft shell turtle, will you be kind enough to post your layout picture? I got a baby soft shell turtle but no experience |
Answer: | Hello, we have a Florida Cooter turtle named Tiffany. Anyway we had her in that habitat for 7 Or 8 months. I do not know how to attach another picture to this response. |
Question: | Will this fit inside a 5 or 10 gallon aquarium |
Answer: | yes |

Exo Terra Natural Terrarium - Advanced Reptile Habitat, Low 24" x 18" x 12"
These low sizes (12” or 30 cm) are ideal for ground dwelling reptile and amphibians. Especially desert reptile species benefit from these lower sizes as the ultraviolet and heat bulbs are even closer to the animal.
The 3 new lower sizes are specially designed for desert set-ups, since most desert species are ground dwellers and do not move vertically. Although very similar in shape and size as the “aquarium-type” tanks, these new versions have all the great features of the typical Exo Terra terrarium. Three new sizes: PT2603 Natural Terrarium Small - Low 18”x18”x12” PT2604 Natural Terrarium Medium - Low 24”x18”x12”
PT2611 Natural Terrarium Large - Low 36”x18”x12”
- The top is made of metal screen to provide adequate ventilation and is safe for overhead heat sources to meet the needs of the reptile keepers
- The terrarium is water tight and can hold water, not only can be used for tropical pets, also perfect for desert pets
- The cover includes specially designed feeding ports that are designed to be functional and also visually appealing
- The "lift and pull"sliding door is simple and very convenient
- Not need install, easy to use, Size:8" x 8" x 12"
User questions & answers
Question: | I need something bigger than an 8x8. It’s hard to tell the size of this tank. I have a created gecko. What do you recommend |
Answer: | Dear, How about this one , the size is 36" x 18" x 18", this is the link :https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CV797LC Any where need us , please feel free to let us know. Have a nice day REPTIZOO |
Question: | Do you sell a replacement lid for this terrarium? The plastic part you lift to open ours broke, and we are worried our snake will escape. Thanks |
Answer: | do you still have the plastic piece that broke off? gorilla glue is fantastic. holds things very well. just never let a dog get into it r you will have a serious problem |
Question: | Would this be good for a house gecko |
Answer: | Too small for most gecko species. Check to see what the cage size requirements are for the specific SPECIES of gecko you intend to house. Gecko cage size requirements vary widely from species to species. Some require an 18" x 18" x 24" cage. So it is species dependent. Only the very, very tiniest species of adult geckos could live in an 8" x 8" x 12". and even then it would not be ideal. Vertical height is most important with arboreal geckos. Plus, that cage has a slide-open top, which means if the gecko is hanging on the top, you cannot open the cage at all. |
Question: | Is this good for a terrestrial tarantula |
Answer: | No, terrestrial tarsntulas need more width than height. This is better for an arborel species but can work for a terrestrial species that tends to burrow more. I would only keep your tarantula in this cage until it reaches three to four inches in legspan. Give them room to move around! |

REPTIZOO Reptile Mini Glass Terrarium
Glass terrariums are the preferred choice of professional Herpetologists. They offer the best viewing for your animal; they are suitable for damp and humid conditions, are hygienic and easy to clean. Glass also maintains the correct heat gradient more safely and easily-maintaining the correct heat gradient is critical to a reptile's and amphibian's well-being as they use external heat sources in their environment to regulate their body temperatures.
Convenient Feeding Hole
The pre-drilled hole specially designed for feeding easily.
Well ventilated with removable mesh top
The removable top mesh screen provides plenty of ventilation for optimum airflow, and allows full spectrum, UVB and IR light penetration.
Slot for wire in-out
The slot on the side is good for wire management.
Sliding Top Screen
The top is easy sliding for feeding and clean.
Easy laminating for multiple terrariums overlapping
The terrarium is easy for overlapping to keep more reptile pets.
Water-tight base
The terrarium is water-tight up to the hinged doors, which allows for a “water pool” inside the terrarium, or a natural water feature for an amphibian.
