User questions & answers
Question: | Is 10 lbs enough for 20 gallon tank |
Answer: | For filtration I would say no, because they say you need at least 1lb of rock per gallon. Aesthetically I would also say no bc in my 10gal this 10lbs was just enough. |
Question: | Ok i'm going to sound stupid...can someone tell me why is a rock called a live rock ? almost 60 and never heard of this ...sorry |
Answer: | Well in the hobby there are two forms usually associated. Live rock and dry live rock. Live rock is rock that has been cured and has a thriving bacteria colony living within it. Dry live rock (as in this caribsea rock) has 0 bacteria and does not have any seeded bacteria for your tank. This kind of rock made from aragonite, thy are all usually called live rock. It's mainly used for saltwater tanks but you can used them in freshwater as well. |
Question: | Can this keep my phosphates high |
Answer: | not if you keep up with your water changes and feed less to your fish daily. |
Question: | Is this for 10 lbs OR 3 cases of 10 lbs each |
Answer: | It comes as 3 pieces of rock that, together, weighs 10# - I felt that it was a misleading advertisement - I thought I was getting a total of 30# but this is NOT what I received. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the shelf life for these rocks? I mean how long you can keep them without using them in the tank |
Answer: | These are not live rocks so they last as long as any rock... Hope this answered your question. They are dead dry rocks |
Question: | I have 150 gallon freshwater tank looking for large decor. I have 20"pleco mollies, platty, guppies, loaches, mixed catfish. Would you recommend this |
Answer: | The short answer is no. Rock is really good for saltwater because it raises kh along with the biological filtration benefits. Using these rocks in a freshwater tank without letting them soak for an extreme amount of time (like 6 months to make sure that all the soft rock has broken down) could seriously impact a freshwater tank with scaleless fish. With loaches and I assume scaleless cats, you must know how sensitive your fish are to high kh and kh spikes so I would recommend avoiding base / reef rock like the plague. The best decorations for freshwater are river rock / lava rock and driftwood. I have two large pieces of driftwood and some slate + river rock in my FW ciclid tank and my experience supports the idea that driftwood can help soften the water a bit. Remember that plecos and loaches love driftwood and will feed on the algae that grows on it. I have friends who have had success replication the look of base rock with lava rock but do some research about how the rock can change your water chemistry. |
Question: | Can i use these rocks without any live rocks. i'm tryna to add corals later. and i'm trying to add fish. when can i add the fish |
Answer: | it will take much longer. but patience is key. i just added 1 live rock and waited about 3 months for the cycle ,and then added 1 fish a month. and i have not had 1 lose in the 6 months my system has been up. as for corals it all depends on what type of fish you want. |
Question: | Anyone ever try to drill holes in this stuff? i desire to drill lots of 1/4 inch holes to sink some living color coral in |
Answer: | yeah, you can drill into these rocks. They come in an assortment of shapes and sizes. Overall it's very soft. You can cut it with a regular hand saw even. |

Florida Dry Base Rock for Saltwater Aquariums, Reef Tanks, FOWLR. This is our Florida “Live” rock. What will my rock look like? As you can see in the pictures, our rock comes in many sizes and shapes. Each rock is unique in size and shape. The rock has tunnels or holes in which critters can hide or live. These holes will also give support for stacking and creating your own personal design in your tank. If you’re looking for a simple live rock structure then you usually can achieve this by simply stacking and adjusting until you find a stable form that will not topple. If you’re trying to do a more elaborate design, you might find that using a reef epoxy will work better to make the bond more permanent. For the hobbyist that really wants something unique, you may find that drilling the rock and using acrylic rods for increased stability may better suite your needs.
- 100% safe for all marine animals

Question: | Is this rock or sand??? Description and title are conflicting |
Answer: | Supposed to be the rock. I had ordered it and ended up with 40 lbs of sand, told Amazon about it and they fixes the issue and sent me the rock |
Question: | Is there a wide variety of sizes and shapes among the rocks |
Answer: | Yes and you can always break bigger pieces |
Question: | Did this make anybody else skimmer go crazy after putting in the tank? Im getting all kinds of micro bubbles from my pumps now too |
Answer: | Yes. It's the initial bacteria die off that causes that. You should rinse the rock thoroughly in RODI water before adding to your tank to avoid this. |

Caribsea Life Rock
LifeRock begins as a sunlit piece of Pleistocene era seafloor thriving with living creatures. Over the next 100 millennia and the retreat of the ocean, this ancient piece of seafloor, now well inland, has formed a pure, aragonite-bearing rock. This clean base rock is 97% calcium carbonate with minor and trace elements such as strontium, magnesium, and barium. This base has an amazing 50% void space which will provide residence for billions of water-purifying bacteria. LifeRock is infused with bacteria using AragAlive technology which results in a reduction of traditional cycling times. Each piece of LifeRock has multiple engineered aragonite coatings that not only maintain the extensive macro-and micro- porosity but yield the soft muted colors of a living reef. LifeRock is a superior rock of true marine origin without hitchhikers, organics, or algae. No curing is required.
About Us
In reality, CaribSea began in 1950’5 Cuba where Greenfield a Navy fighter pilot and early adopter of SCUBA gear, and his wife Nancy were stationed. Both were California natives with a taste for adventure and diving the fabulous reefs of the south coast of Cuba was a natural. Florida was the epicenter of the emerging fiberglass boat industry and just happened to be the best diving in the continental U.S. South Florida became home and the Florida Keys an every weekend destination. The home aquariums multiplied but a high quality substrate was always a problem and, as it turned out, a problem for everyone else too. With so many potential materials available and the proximity of a world renowned marine institute and laboratory just down the street (the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science), a product was born.

Artisans hand sculpt each Reef Rock 2.1 into a unique shape, creating beautiful pieces from natural materials in Fiji. The reef rock contains volcanic rock minerals, making it lighter than wild live rock. After scuplting is completed they let it dry for 6 weeks, then they place it in the ocean off the coast of Fiji for 18 months. Over that time period shades of purple, Pink, and red coralline algae grow over the rock. The rock is fully cured, making it an excellent saltwater aquarium reef rock for beginners to professionals. It is eco-friendly, reducing the amount of wild harvested rock, provides revenue for Fijians, and the Walt Smith company donate a portion of the sales to the ADE project.

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of sand will i need |
Answer: | I think you should google "how to choose aquarium substrate". I'm far from an expert but many factors go into choosing like: is your tank freshwater or saltwater, do your fish need to burrow, do your fish like to sift the substrate, are you going to keep plants in the tank. Once you set up a tank, the substrate will probably be the hardest thing to change. Good luck! |
Question: | How many boxes are good for 12 gallons |
Answer: | If there are no other rocks already in the tank, I would use 2-3 boxes. It is better to have extras than look barren. I supplemented my 55 gallon tank with just one box but I had four large rocks in already. |
Question: | Is this real limestone? Im hoping it will help raise the ph and harden the water in my aquarium |
Answer: | Yes, it's oolitic limestone, they just cut it to make the stax shapes. |
Question: | How much & big is 5 lbs |
Answer: | I’ve bought about 5-6 separate 5 pound boxes. Each box holds about 5-7 medium size rocks. 4-7 inches in size. Great rock to scape with easy to work with. |

Every box of Shapes LifeRock contains a mixture of arches, rings, and tunnels giving you unique looking pieces that can be used on their own or as accents to the rest of the aquascape. Pieces are unique. They will look similar to the pieces picture, but every box is different. 5 to 8 pieces are included in every box of LifeRock Shapes. We guarantee every box is at least 20 pounds. We recommend 1 to 2 pounds of rock per gallon of aquarium water. NOTE: This rock is fragile and may break in shipping. Unless it is pulverized we can not replace the rock if broken. This rock needs to be glued together when placed in an aquarium anyway, and in many instances you might want to break the rock into smaller pieces to build a desirable structure.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this need to be rinsed and soaked in R/O water before putting in tank |
Answer: | It should be rinsed, the purpose of buying this rock is to *not* soak it. The coatings on it are meant to soak into the water in the tank to accelerate the adoption of new water to mature it quicker. I have built 3 aquariums with it, and it goes well, but I have had to black them out twice to kill off algae blooms. Bare rock is better if you intend to control all aspects of the maturity. This is a good product imho. |
Question: | Is this rock painted |
Answer: | Yes!!! |
Question: | is this product food grade? I would like to use it in my aquaponic system |
Answer: | No, it is not food grade. It’s live rock for oxygen purposes only |
Question: | How many pieces and shapes do you get |
Answer: | I would say we got maybe 8-10 pieces/20lb box. They are a good size though. It is really neat stuff! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use this for a fish only aquarium? Also, I have a unopened 5 gallon bucket of this thats been in my basement for 7 years is it still good |
Answer: | Yes, you would be providing more calcium and magnesium, etc., than the fish need, but that would not harm them. In regards to the older bag, as long as no moisture has gotten into it, causing it to harden, yes, it is perfectly fine to use it. |
Question: | I tested water it tested negative for amonia, but after I mixed the reef crystals it tested positive. Any reason why |
Answer: | Did you add any new live rock, fish or food before mixing reef crystals? Also does it still test positive for amonia the next day? When you say it test positive for amonia, how high does the test say the amonia is? |
Question: | Does the 160 gallon bucket come in individual bag like the 200 gallon box |
Answer: | No. It comes in a bucket. |
Question: | does the bucket come with the 160 gallon mix |
Answer: | Yes the 160 gallon formula comes in a 5 gallon bucket |

User questions & answers
Question: | can i use this to secure to wet/live rocks together underwater somehow |
Answer: | You can but it takes way longer to dry and it takes more of it. Don’t press really hard because it will just spread out to thin. If you can take the rocks out then apply it then put it right back in that works to but I know once you start glueing them all to that opt is out the window. |
Question: | Does this stuff cause your protein skimmer to overflow |
Answer: | It does and I just learned my lesson after using this and seeing the skimmer overflowing. It has been 2 days and I turned the skimmer all the way and still overflowing! |
Question: | Will this work to glue coral pieces together to make one piece |
Answer: | No sure, will glue rock or plug to rock |
Question: | epoxy sticks to glass |
Answer: | I don't think so |
