API Aquarium Test Kit

Product description

Most water problems are invisible to the eye. Quickly measure and modify the six aquarium levels that are most important to the health of your freshwater fish with the API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT. To stay healthy and thrive, fish need properly balanced levels of ammonia, pH, high range pH, nitrite and nitrate. These levels can change rapidly and create harmful conditions when fish waste, uneaten food or other organic matter accumulate, or when untreated water is added. If left uncorrected, all of these can be harmful or even fatal to fish, with consequences such as reduction of oxygen, increase in stress and higher risk of disease. The API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT measures these six parameters with scientific accuracy and provides professional results. It comes with four glass test tubes, a holding tray, test tube rack and computer calibrated, laminated color card. Just fill the test tubes, add the test drops and compare results to the color card. Then follow the recommendations on the card if action is required. With API Aquarium products, it’s easy to keep a beautiful saltwater, freshwater or reef aquarium. For over 50 years, API has been creating innovative, research-driven solutions that make it easier to care for your fish and aquarium. API Aquarium Treatment Supplies are designed to work in conjunction with each other to provide best results to control algae, promote healthy bacterial growth and help control and cure fish diseases and conditions such as ich and fin rot. They work to provide a safe, hospitable environment for fish such as tropical community fish, cichlids, goldfish and more. With API, you can spend more time admiring your fish, and less time scrubbing your tank. Make sure to use all products as directed in order to ensure the best results.

User questions & answers

Question: Can any of these tests be used for both saltwater and freshwater? I noticed a lot of the individually packaged tests say they can be used for both
Answer: Api ammonia, nitrite and nitrate test kits can be used for both salt and fresh water aquariums, the liquid solutions are the same for salt and fresh. BUT the color cards that you use to compare your test to are slightly different. I have both fresh water and marine. The first time I bought these kits, I bought for saltwater and freshwater and never threw away the color cards. Now it doesn't matter if I get freshwater or saltwater test kits because I have both freshwater and saltwater cards.
Question: Would this kit be a good one for my planted aquarium
Answer: Yes, this is a good general water testing kit, unless you have plants that are very sensitive to water hardness. This kit does NOT include a water-hardness tester.
Question: I'm a newbie. I have a betta in 10G tank and I'm told that I need to test the water always. Not sure if I should get this or get cheaper ones instead
Answer: Frankly, with a 10G tank you should just be doing weekly water changes of at least 25-30%. You can't really "let things go" with a tank that size and it's unlikely that you would have ammonia spikes with such frequent water changes. I have a little 5.5 gallon with a couple of albino cory cats and I use a test strip every once in a blue moon, but the water is always fine because I do weekly changes. Am looking at this kit for my 125 gallon tank, but would bother for a tiny tank.
Question: How many tests can be run with this kit
Answer: About 120. Problem is that if you use the full set of products daily you will quickly run out of the ammonia test and the Nitrates tests (each with 2 bottles) because they take 8-10 drops each, compared to the Ph test which only takes 3 drops. I mainly test ammonia and nitrites so I've had to buy separate ammonia kits twice now because I ran out of fluid, while my high range ph bottle is nearly full. Also - Prime, AmGuard and other products convert Ammonia into harmless Ammonium however, it will still read as ammonia on your API kit - so it's basically lying to you. There are kits that will show you active ammonia and harmless ammonium and my API kit reads 8.0 ammonia but the other kit reads it as all harmless ammonium and zero active ammonia. You have do dose your tank with Prime every 48 hours or less to keep the ammonium from converting back to killer ammonia. This will keep happening until your tank finally converts the ammonium to nitrites. My 2 of my 4 well-cycled tanks somehow lost their cycling so that's not happening for those tanks yet.

Testing the Waters

In order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. Most common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH. All may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly. Testing aquarium water weekly will aid in keeping your most important water parameters within the proper range for your aquarium. Choose from a wide range of API testing options, such as our popular FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT or 5-IN-1 TEST STRIPS, for accurate water evaluation. Regular testing will help you easily determine your aquarium conditions.

Your API Test Options

Choose the test method that works best for you. Whether you’re a bit pressed for time, or you prefer to measure your parameters on a more in-depth scale, or you only need to test one or two specific parameters, API has what you need!

Dip and Read

Just dip a 5-in-1 TEST STRIP in your aquarium, swirl twice, and compare to our color chart for fast and accurate results.

The Scientific Approach

For more detailed analysis, use the FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT, POND MASTER TEST KIT, SALTWATER MASTER TEST KIT, or REEF MASTER TEST KIT for precise readings of parameters.

Pick One (or Two)

Need to check your phosphate levels? What about ammonia? API offers specific test kits to test many different parameters, from general hardness and copper to pH and nitrate. Grab the one you need for a streamlined approach to testing.

API Quick Start Nitrifying Bacteria, for Freshwater and Saltwater Aquarium

API

Based on 4 reviews Check latest price

Product description

In a new aquarium, harmful ammonia and nitrite build up from fish waste, often resulting in fish loss or “new tank syndrome”. The unique, patented nitrifying bacteria in API QUICK START Freshwater and Saltwater Aquarium Nitrifying Bacteria are scientifically proven to quickly consume ammonia and nitrite to help prevent fish loss. API QUICK START Freshwater and Saltwater Aquarium Nitrifying Bacteria allows immediate addition of fish to a new freshwater or saltwater aquarium as it immediately starts the aquarium cycle. This treatment also helps to maintain an active biological filter in an established aquarium for healthy water conditions. API QUICK START contains live, nitrifying bacteria. Aquarium Nitrifying Bacteria

  • Contains one API QUICK START Freshwater and Saltwater Aquarium Nitrifying Bacteria 16-Ounce Bottle
  • Allows instant addition of fish when starting a new aquarium
  • Reduces compounds harmful to fish when used routinely
  • Helps prevent fish loss in freshwater and saltwater aquariums
  • Use when starting a new aquarium, when adding new fish and when changing water and filter media

User questions & answers

Question: Do i have to remove filter socks or turn off skimmer after adding
Answer: It doesn't "clean" the water, it conditions/detoxifies tap water. If you're adding new fish I would make sure to stabilize the water first (PH, ammonia & nitrites). The best way to check these levels is to have the appropriate test kits.
Question: What is the expiration date? How long does it keep
Answer: I use this product every time I change the water in my fish tank, whether it's partial changes or full water changes. But the beauty of this product is how little of it you have to use (2mL conditions 2 gal).
Question: Can I use marine quick start in freshwater
Answer: You should add stress coat to the water BEFORE you add it to the tank, in a bucket. The correct dosage is 1/2 a ml per gallon so for 4 gallons you would need 2 ml. You can safely double or triple the dose to replace slime coat or for fin regrowth. You only treat the water you are adding (separately before you add it), there is no reason to treat water you have already treated. So yes you would just add conditioner to the 4 gallons you are replacing. But of course when you first start your tank you must add conditioner to all the water (before you add your fish) because that would be straight tap water that has never been conditioned. This is great stuff. Hope this helps.
Question: Does It Have Parmesan In It
Answer: no its not bad for your plants, it actually is good for plants because it removes chlorine from tap water and makes for a healthyenviorment for all aquatic life......hope this helps.

Feed Your Fish Daily

Feed your fish twice daily with API Fish Food which contains nutritionally enhanced proteins, allowing for easy uptake of nutrients and maximum absorption, resulting in less excrement for clear, clean water. Take time to observe fish to ensure they are active & healthy and be sure to check water temperature.

Test Water Quality Weekly

An aquarium is a closed environment and in order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. The 5 common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH - all of which may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly with API MASTER TEST KITS or API 5-IN-1 TEST STRIPS. It is also a good time to add API STRESS ZYME to keep your aquarium & gravel clean.

Change 25% Water Every 2 Weeks

In a closed aquarium environment there are no natural rivers or streams to carry away debris and other waste materials. It is important to renew 25% of the aquarium water every two weeks. When you change the water, it is important to know that tap water contains chemicals that make it safe for us to drink but harmful for fish, therefore add a water conditioner such as API STRESS COAT.

Restore Your Ecosystem Monthly

It is important to change your filter media & clean gravel monthly, however in doing so it can disrupt the fragile ecosystem of your aquarium. Use API QUICK START to strengthen it with ‘beneficial’ nitrifying bacteria that will naturally consume toxic compounds and help prevent fish stress. Also recommended when starting a new aquarium or changing the water.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this clean the water right away so i can add fish right after or wait for it to settle
Answer: I would recommend API Stress Zyne Plus. My fish kept dying for the first few weeks. It took almost 8 weeks to for the tank to cycle. So get 2 or 3 fist to start and nothing fancy. Keep testing for Amonia levels. Once the tank cycles, it should be at 0. Then you can get fish you want to keep.
Question: How often are you supposed to use this product
Answer: The directions state 25 ml per 10 gallons on day 1 (100 ml) and then 10 ml per 10 gallons on day 2 and 3 (40 ml per day) so a total of 180 ml for your 40 gallon breader. I do a sustainment treatment every week of 5 ml per 10 gallons (another 20 ml). I think this is a great way to get and keep a large colony of beneficial bacteria. Good luck with the new tank!
Question: Do you have to treat the water and then put it in the tank or can you do water change and then immediately add this stuff? I've been adding water and then this stuff rigth after in the tank
Answer: The smaller 4 oz size would be great for a 6 gallon tank. It would last for quite awhile but not so long you would not have fresh product available when you do reorder. Add a few drops to your filter after cleaning it to jump start beneficial enhancers there as well.
Question: can I use this with my live plant tank? will it bad for the live plant
Answer: If you're looking to set up a new tank, i'd use the biggest bottle possible; the more bacteria the better the start you'll have. However, this is not a product i generally recommend, because the bacteria contained in these bottles are temporary spot holders for the real bacteria to colonize your filter after a few weeks. I'd rather you get microbelift's nite out II or Dr tims one and only (a bit more expensive), which contains the actual bacteria your filter needs.

User questions & answers

Question: If I use this medication in a tank with a sponge filter, do I have to throw the filter away after? Why
Answer: Absolutely! In fact many importers and retailers use API Stress Zyme to clean up their live rock when it arrives. API contains millions of live bacteria that work synergistically with all reef inhabitants. In a reef aquarium in areas back in the aquarium or within the rocks that we can not easily reach, Stress Zyme will digest any decaying organic matter, reducing overall maintenance, keeping your reef aquarium cleaner.
Question: Do I need to remove filter medias or just the Activated charcoal
Answer: As for length of time you can store, I use it weekly and it lasts for about four months or so. Does not seem to lose effectiveness in that time.
Question: What are the main active ingredients
Answer: Donot mix tap water conditioner with stress zyme and stress coat or donot use it together in same time doing this youre likely killing live bacteria’s present in zymes and stress coat, first use tap water conditioner wait 10 -15 minutes to circulate the water then add stress coat or zymes to work perfectly.follow the instruction in bottle.
Question: Is api general cure affected by a uv sterilizer? does the sterilizer need to be turned off during treatment
Answer: In short, you don't need the Stress Zyme if you already are using the Quick Start. Here's a longer answer:The API Stress Coat is primarily a de-chlorinator and has aloe added to help maintain a healthy slime coat on the fish so this should always be added to the water and mixed before adding to the tank. The API Quick Start is meant to jump start the biological cycling of a tank and is only needed for new tanks or potentially semi established tanks that have a spike in ammonia and nitrite levels which could be caused by adding more fish. You can stop using this once your water chemistry has stabilized. API Stress Zyme is very similar in function to the Quick Start and is generally chosen to improve water clarity or stabilize chemistry in more established tanks. You don't need to use both simultaneously and would probably never see the difference compared to using just one. On another note, I always add my bacteria after there is no chance there is any chlorine so they have a better chance of proliferating. I would add either the Quick Start or the Stress Zyme the day after a water change, directly into the tank.

Question: Help ammonia spike killing fish treated but not working
Answer: Yes, this is ok to use with medication.
Question: Is this safe for an axolotl
Answer: This item is meant to go inside your canister filter system. We use ours in the API Filstar XP. It would not work just placing in the fish tank.
Question: Since this only detoxifies ammonia, is there a chemical additive that removes ammonia? and not a filtering device
Answer: I did and it worked great took nitrites and nitrates out in one hour 125 gallon tank my water cleared up and has stayed clear
Question: is it safe for little turtles
Answer: I would switch your filter to a AquaClear power filter with multi-stage filtration system. I did a few months ago and it’s made a huge difference and I believe you can flop out a cartridge for the Nitra-Zorb pouch

User questions & answers

Question: Is this all I need to start a fresh water tank, chemical wise
Answer: We would recommend to use API Ammo-lock every other day if suffering an ammonia spike that is killing fish.
Question: Can use this for guppys
Answer: killed my fish
Question: Can i use flakes for my goldfish
Answer: Chlorine but of course you will kill your fish, I actually tryed this product but in my experience did more bad than good. If you really want to remove ammonia in a safe way you will need to do water change daily first day 50% after that 20% for at least 5 day and then check your water parameters. Don't add more fish until your filter is cycled.Of course if your filter was never cycled you will have to continue doing water changes every other day 10-20%. Good luck and take care.
Question: Im new to this. So do you put tap water first in the tank. Then put the stress water conditioner in. Then wait a few seconds to put the fish in
Answer: I am applying that API Ammo Lock on fish tank. I am not sure if it is safe for little turtles.

Question: The instructions on the back of the box are confusing to me. Could you explain the procedure day by day
Answer: You may use the flakes for you goldfish.
Question: What is the difference between api fin & body cure and api furan
Answer: I, personally, add the stress coat /ammonia remover in a new aquarium before adding fish . When I do a water change I take about 35-40 % of water (about every 2 weeks) out and then I have a container that I only use for water that goes into the aquarium and I add the API stress coat in the container with the water that I am adding ...

Identify the Symptoms to Administrate the Effective Treatment

There is No “One-Size-Fits-All”! Remember that just like humans, fish may respond better to some medications than to others. If your fish doesn’t seem to be responding to one type of bacterial or fungal treatment, simply select another, and treat until symptoms dissipate.

Fungal Infection

• Whitish cottony tufts or patches appear on the mouth, skin and fins of tropical fish, goldfish and koi.

• We recommend API PIMAFIX.

Fin And Tail Rot

• Fins appear ragged and split. Disease can progress until fins and tail are completely eroded.

• Secondary fungal infections commonly occur.

• We recommend API MELAFIX (or BETTAFIX if you have a betta fish), or alternatively PIMAFIX, FURAN-2 or FIN & BODY CURE.

Dropsy and Malawi Bloat

• Fish develop a bloated appearance due to accumulation of fluid in the body cavity.

• Scales may appear to stick out from the sides of fish.

• In advanced cases, fish lose the ability to swim and may float upside down.

• We recommend API MELAFIX (or BETTAFIX if you have a betta fish) or PIMAFIX, or alternatively FURAN-2 or FIN & BODY CURE.

Bacterial Hemorrhagic Septicemia

• Fish show blood streaks in the fins and body.

• We recommend API MELAFIX (or BETTAFIX if you have a betta fish), or alternatively PIMAFIX, FURAN-2 or FIN & BODY CURE.

Eye Cloud, Body Slime

• Eyes develop a whitish haze and/or protrude from the head.

• Hazy or slimy patches appear on the bodies of fish.

• If infested with parasites, fish may scratch on objects in the aquarium and exhibit rapid breathing.

• We recommend API MELAFIX (or BETTAFIX if you have a betta fish), or alternatively PIMAFIX, FURAN-2, or FIN & BODY CURE.

Open Red Sores

• Fish exhibit open red sores on the body.

• We recommend API MELAFIX (or BETTAFIX if you have a betta fish), or alternatively PIMAFIX, FURAN-2 or FIN & BODY CURE.

Mouth Fungus - Saddleback Disease

• Raised, gray patches are observed on the fins and mouth areas of fish.

• Live bearers, such as guppies and mollies, develop grayish patches on their backs, giving rise to the name “saddle back disease.”

• Infected areas may develop into red ulcers and infect the gills, causing rapid loss of fish.

• We recommend API MELAFIX (or BETTAFIX if you have a betta fish) or PIMAFIX, or alternatively FURAN-2 or FIN & BODY CURE.

Bacterial Gill Disease

• Fish will scratch against objects and appear listless. A grayish film may form on the body.

• Rapid breathing in fish may be accompanied by gasping at the surface of the water, or the fish sitting on the bottom of the aquarium.

• Gills undergo severe damage, leading to suffocation and death.

• We recommend API MELAFIX (or BETTAFIX if you have a betta fish), or alternatively PIMAFIX, FURAN-2 or FIN & BODY CURE.

Flukes/Parasitic Worms

• Most parasitic worms are not visible without the aid of a microscope. Fish will scratch against objects and appear listless. A grayish film may form one the body.

• Rapid breathing in fish may be accompanied by gasping at the surface of the water, or the fish sitting on the bottom of the aquarium.

• Gills undergo severe damage, leading to suffocation and death.

• We recommend API GENERAL CURE. For secondary or fungal infection, use MELAFIX (or BETTAFIX if you have a betta fish) and PIMAFIX together.

Hole-In-The-Head Disease (Hexamita)

• The most obvious symptom is the pitting and erosion of skin and muscle tissue around the face of the fish. This erosion appears to be a symptom of the parasite's presence in the intestinal tract, not on the surface of the fish.

• Many fish exhibit poor appetite, weight loss and nervousness; without proper treatment, death ultimately results.

• We recommend API GENERAL CURE

Ich (Ichthyophthirius)

• Early symptoms of this infection in fish include darting in the aquarium and scratching against the gravel and ornaments.

• Fish exhibit labored breathing and may remain at the water's surface, near filters and aeration devices.

• White spots may or may not be visible on the fish.

• We recommend API SUPER ICK CURE along with API AQUARIUM SALT

Subclinical Parasitic Infestation

• Fish may scratch on objects in the aquarium.

• Slimy skin may develop on fish and fins may be clamped.

• Labored breathing may be observed.

• We recommend API SUPER ICK CURE along with API AQUARIUM SALT; or alternatively MELAFIX (or BETTAFIX if you have a betta fish) and PIMAFIX together.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a canister filter - does this go in my filter instead of the charcoal
Answer: Yes, API Furan-2 will work on bacterial infections in any ornamental fish including Plecostomus.
Question: I have a wet dry sump system, will this work on my system
Answer: Carbon filter media
Question: Is this a 1 pack or 2 pack? Multiple conflicting descriptions
Answer: Sure! Day 1- Apply 1st dose of medication to the aquarium Day 2- Apply the 2nd dose of the medication to the aquarium Day 3- Perform a 25% water exchange and then apply the 3rd dose of medication Day 4- Apply the 4th dose of medication Day 5- Perform a 25% water exchange and put activated carbon back into the filter (if applicable).
Question: I have a moving bed filter that does not require a pouch and a sponge filter. How do i use this if i dont use a canister or hang on the back filter
Answer: Both of these are antibiotics, used only to combat bacterial infections in fish. API Fin & body cure is a combination of salt (sodium chloride) and doxycycline hyclate powder and can only be used in freshwater applications. Furan -2 contains Nitrofurazone and Furazolidone, a combination used to fight many gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Both are effective against a wide range of bacterial diseases in fish. They will not be effective against viral or parasitic (critters) diseases. If you have a saltwater aquarium, then of these two, you can only use the Furan-2. First know what you are trying to cure and if bacterial and freshwater then either might be effective. I have had mixed success with Furan-2 and have not tried API Fin and Body Cure.
