User questions & answers

Question: Do i have to remove filter socks or turn off skimmer after adding
Answer: It doesn't "clean" the water, it conditions/detoxifies tap water. If you're adding new fish I would make sure to stabilize the water first (PH, ammonia & nitrites). The best way to check these levels is to have the appropriate test kits.
Question: What is the expiration date? How long does it keep
Answer: I use this product every time I change the water in my fish tank, whether it's partial changes or full water changes. But the beauty of this product is how little of it you have to use (2mL conditions 2 gal).
Question: Can I use marine quick start in freshwater
Answer: You should add stress coat to the water BEFORE you add it to the tank, in a bucket. The correct dosage is 1/2 a ml per gallon so for 4 gallons you would need 2 ml. You can safely double or triple the dose to replace slime coat or for fin regrowth. You only treat the water you are adding (separately before you add it), there is no reason to treat water you have already treated. So yes you would just add conditioner to the 4 gallons you are replacing. But of course when you first start your tank you must add conditioner to all the water (before you add your fish) because that would be straight tap water that has never been conditioned. This is great stuff. Hope this helps.
Question: Does It Have Parmesan In It
Answer: no its not bad for your plants, it actually is good for plants because it removes chlorine from tap water and makes for a healthyenviorment for all aquatic life......hope this helps.

Feed Your Fish Daily

Feed your fish twice daily with API Fish Food which contains nutritionally enhanced proteins, allowing for easy uptake of nutrients and maximum absorption, resulting in less excrement for clear, clean water. Take time to observe fish to ensure they are active & healthy and be sure to check water temperature.

Test Water Quality Weekly

An aquarium is a closed environment and in order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. The 5 common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH - all of which may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly with API MASTER TEST KITS or API 5-IN-1 TEST STRIPS. It is also a good time to add API STRESS ZYME to keep your aquarium & gravel clean.

Change 25% Water Every 2 Weeks

In a closed aquarium environment there are no natural rivers or streams to carry away debris and other waste materials. It is important to renew 25% of the aquarium water every two weeks. When you change the water, it is important to know that tap water contains chemicals that make it safe for us to drink but harmful for fish, therefore add a water conditioner such as API STRESS COAT.

Restore Your Ecosystem Monthly

It is important to change your filter media & clean gravel monthly, however in doing so it can disrupt the fragile ecosystem of your aquarium. Use API QUICK START to strengthen it with ‘beneficial’ nitrifying bacteria that will naturally consume toxic compounds and help prevent fish stress. Also recommended when starting a new aquarium or changing the water.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this sea salt be used for sea monkeys or for keeping brine shrimp for pets
Answer: Yes, sea monkeys will hatch well in water containing this salt.
Question: How much do you put in to make a fresh water 3 gallon fish tank a brackish fish tank for my dwarf pufferfish
Answer: I put a tablespoon per 10 gallons, but mine aren't brackish tanks. Have had a Green Spotted Puffer for 5-6 years and it does fine in freshwater. Don't know if other kinds can be freshwater.
Question: can this be used for saltwater hermit crabs? (1) and also how much should I add per gallon ? thank u all
Answer: Mix 1 1/2 tsp of sea salt with one cup (8 oz.) of water. Do not use regular table salt and make sure you use distilled or treated water. Tap water has chlorine.
Question: Is 33oz sufficient for a 30 gallon tank with 1 betta (some discoloration and eye issue) and 3 snails? 64oz is 4 pounds and seems like a bit much
Answer: Its more than sufficient! It will last you a long time. 33 oz is enough to treat about 220 gallons! Thats about enough for 21 water changes (if you do 10 gallons each time). 1 tablespoon for every 5 gallons = 6 tablespoons or 3/8 of a cup. I have a 29 gallon tank and I do water changes biweekly (mollys poop a lot). I recommend this as some water filtering systems and treatments remove vital electrolytes. Think of it as Gatorade or alkaline mineral water for your fish. Its also good to have for when they are a bit under the weather.

User questions & answers

Question: For a 5 gallon aquarium, would I just use the pillow for 48 hours, then each time I 25% water change, or does the pillow have to remain in the tank
Answer: The pillow should remain in the filter. When you use this be careful of the PH in the tank. I have found that the pillow can cause the PH to go quite alkaline and some fish are very sensitive to this.
Question: Does it hurt to leave the pillows in the filter until next water change? Will it shorten the life of the pillows (x's you can recharge
Answer: The instruction I found online say that it should not be left in for long periods. And, you can recharge it with sunlight, if you use it for the period of time only long enough to get the change you are looking for in the water. Thanks my experience.
Question: Will it stain water
Answer: No, it will not stain water.
Question: What is the recharging process
Answer: 3 tablespoons aquarium salt dissolved in 7 ounces of tap water, use a shallow dish. Rinse the pillow after removing from filter area and soak in salt solution for 2 hrs. Always store pillow in salt solution when not using. Discard pillow when it is no longer effective (check the water hardness to verify.) I use a plastic Chinese to-go dish, the white rectangular ones.

Product description

Quickly and easily check your aquarium's ammonia levels with API AMMONIA TEST STRIPS. Fish continually release ammonia into the aquarium through their gills, urine and solid waste. Uneaten food and decaying organic matter also add ammonia to the water. Ammonia is toxic to fish and can cause gill damage, stress and death. Regular testing is recommended because ammonia levels can build quickly due to fish waste and uneaten food. Simply dip the test strip into the water, then compare the results with the precise, easy-to-read color-coded chart to determine if any action should be taken. The chart includes recommendations on how to treat the water and neutralize ammonia. Safe for use in fresh and salt water. With API Aquarium products, it’s easy to keep a beautiful saltwater, freshwater or reef aquarium. User questions & answers

Question: Is it easy to interpret the readings for a Betta fish
Answer: I don't use this for my Betta tanks (I have 7 Betta only tanks) only my 50 gallon cichlids tank because bettas are such hardy fish they can survive in most conditions. For my Betta tanks I use tap water and the aquasafe (a dechlorinator) and they're happy as can be. But the test strips are very easy to read. just go online to look at the general parameters they should be in before you do the test. If you do purchase these read the instructions some of the strips you have to read right away and some you have to wait a few minutes.
Question: Can you use this for saltwater
Answer: Yes. 4 of the 5 tests work for saltwater also. Only the GH (general hardness) does not work for saltwater.
Question: Are the strips easy to read? Are the colors well defined
Answer: I found them easy to read and liked that the chart is printed on the container that holds the strips so it's readily available. When I first got my kit, I read the instructions and using a felt tipped pen, circled the values that my tank should be at for each test, so when I performed a test I could check it immediately instead of referring back to the instructions each time.
Question: can this test be used for top water
Answer: Just remember that most of these test kits or strips for aquarium use report their results as "nitrate ion" or "nitrite ion", while the EPA standard for drinking water is expressed as "nitrate as nitrogen" or "nitrite as nitrogen". Thus, your aquarium test kit or strip will report a value considerably higher than what it "should" for comparison with a lab test or the EPA standards. This causes a lot of people to needlessly worry.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this with all kinds fresh water fish
Answer: No. Use this only with fish that should have a ph of 7.5. You can kill fish if that is not an appropriate ph for your fish.
Question: Will this raise a ph under 7..??..thanks
Answer: Yes, but you'd better take it slow or you'll kill your fish. I would would use proper ph 7.0 first, buffer near 7.0, then use a combo of 7.0 and 7.5 to slowly raise the ph.
Question: The label say no to use with live plants, have any of you try it with live plant, if so did you have any problem with the plants
Answer: If you have to use it regularly it will kill your plants.
Question: Mine did not come with a scoop or a seal. Should I be concerned about the lack of seal? If not, how much does the scoop hold
Answer: Mine came without a seal too. I stuck an unused chop stick in the container and found the scoop was in there at least. So I dumped some out on a paper plate and retrieved the scoop. Next time I buy this I will open it at the pet store to make sure there is a seal though!!

User questions & answers

Question: Which test kit do I need to test alkalinity
Answer: KH measures akalinity
Question: Ok, my Molly tank read : 12 drops of gh to turn color and 1 drop of kh to turn color. Does this seem suitable for mollies
Answer: I always thought that particular test was a bit confusing as it has no color sample in which to judge the test color by. When you say it takes 12 drops to turn color ( Green ) how deep is the " color" Green ? Look at the colors indicated by the Ammonia test to get an idea on how deep a Green color you have. I have Endlers in a tank and my readings for that tank are just like yours. My Endlers are active, have a good appetite so I would say that your Molly's should be happy with those readings With that said, I would say that the PH is a bit more important than the GH&KH test. Mollies also like to munch on Algae and or Green Veges so provide some for their good health. They also like plants to hang out in, and to provide safety for the fry's.
Question: When I did this, the water changed to a pale yellow or blue within one drop. Are you supposed to keep putting drops in until it is much darker
Answer: Make sure you shake several times after after each drop. Bright yellow for KH not pale yellow. Green change for GH.
Question: Can someone share instructions please? Mine got destroyed. Thank you
Answer: Fill a test tube to the level line. Add one drop at a time and invert tube to mix after each drop. For KH (Carbonate Hardness), the test is complete when water changes from blue to yellow. For GH it is complete when water changes from orange to green. For both tests it is one drop per degree of hardness. So if the KH test takes 5 drops, your CO3 Hardness is 5 dKH. (Its also 17.9 ppm/per degree if you want to convert)

User questions & answers

Question: This should be fine for a Brackish tank
Answer: You can use it however the KH of a brackish tank might prevent you from lowering the ph. Please contact API at 1-800-847-0659 and we can help.
Question: Can this be used in a tank with invertebrates
Answer: Yes. Many years ago this was labeled for ponds
Question: I had an ammonia spike right after adding this to my tank to raise the ph from 6.9 to 7.0, is this temporary and why? Its a new cycled tank
Answer: My tank is 55 gals an I used it raise the levels . I also brought lower levels too. It settled down after 24 hrs and my fish were gone but if it still is high get the lower pH an see
Question: How long after using do you re- test to see how much the pH went up
Answer: We would recommend waiting about a half-hour in order for the water to fully circulate so that you get an accurate reading. If you have a very large system or very little flow, you may want to wait 1-2 hours. You are safe to re-dose at that point as long as you have not changed more than 0.2 in pH, which is the maximum we recommend changing within a 24 hour period to reduce fish stress.

Question: I have a 10 gallon tank, water is not cloudy, but brown algae is growing. Weekly water changes already. Will this help
Answer: This filtration media is for a 35-60 gallon tank filter. It would not fit in a small tank filtration system. I would test your water, move the tank away from direct sunlight. I like the bio orb media in with 2 charcoal filters
Question: Can anyone tell me the dimensions of this pouch
Answer: 3×6 appox
Question: I have a 20 gallon tank, can I use this
Answer: You may use it, however this pouch is made for a 55gallon aquarium, you may not be able to get it to fit into the filter.
Question: Will this kill BBA
Answer: directly? no. BlackBush Algea is actually hundreds of different possible species, some grow with excess b12, some grow with other imbalances. what this WILL do, short term, is help reduce excess phosphates that throw off your tanks balance. You still need to find the root cause that your phosphates went up. excess food, phosphates are put into some water pH stabilizing products. cheaper food can be high in phosphates. plant food, tap water. something is a source. this will help you get the levels down (in addition to water changes) long enough to fix whatever the problem is. BBA can then be removed manually by scrubbing decorations, a bleach-water dip for plants, etc.. i never do that because I don't want to kill my beneficial bacteria colonies, and I'm afraid of not rinsing enough and wiping the tank. but there are guides out there if you're brave enough.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the size 6 fit the Filstar XP
Answer: 6 1/4"x6 1/4" x 1/2" thick,it fits any Rena filter.
Question: I have a 72gal tank with the filstar xpl canister filter. will one pouch be enough? or do i need two
Answer: It is packed with 20pcs for one order.
Question: What are the dimensions of the Size 6 filter
Answer: The XP-L only comes with 5 bio stars and a bag of carbon. The XP-L needs 30-35 bio stars and each bag of media is designated for a 55 gallon tank. So if you use Bio-Chem, Phos-zorb, carbon, or any other media you'll need two bags of each for this canister. U can also use bulk media and your own reusable bags. Not sure what is cheaper.
Question: what gallon is this filter cartridge for
Answer: According to testing it runs about 450 gph. This rating is what you commonly see when you look at a gph rate, but most companies test the product empty. Once you fill it with media and hook up the hoses and stuff you end up with about 200 gph. I set up my tanks with more filtration then a lot of people, so for me, this filter is ideal for a 55 gallon tank, or 75 gallon tank with medium bio-load. I ran two of these and two Emperor 400 filters on my 150 gallon tank with high bio-load and the water was clear. I mention this because the box states it can handle up to a 265 gallon aquarium, which it probably could if the tank was heavily plants and lightly stocked and the filter was cleaned every 2 weeks, which are things that usually don't happen.

Product description

pH is the measure of acidity of water, on a scale ranging from 0 to 14. A pH of 0 is the most acidic, while a pH of 14 is the most alkaline. Different geographies have different tap water conditions with different pH levels, while fish require a specific pH level to thrive. A pH of 7.0 is ideal when keeping a community aquarium containing a variety of tropical fish. Goldfish and livebearers prefer a pH of 7.5. Many Amazonian fish, like angelfish and neon tetras, prefer a pH of 6.5 to 6.8. Mollies and swordtails thrive at pH 7.2 to 7.5. API pH DOWN Freshwater Aquarium Water pH Reducing Solution lowers aquarium pH in freshwater aquariums to desired level. Safe for fish and plants. Use when setting up a new aquarium, adjusting pH, or changing water. pH in an aquarium can fluctuate due to fish waste, uneaten food and addition of tap water. User questions & answers

Question: Has someone received this item not sealed? And with a white cap that doesnt bring any measurements? (not a blue cap like the pH Up i also got
Answer: Yes and it ended up leaking all over the box they were kind enough to send me another also since I have rcvd the pH down with no blue lid I started keeping my blue caps of other fish products most are the same size. Hope that helps.
Question: I haven’t had a fish tank in years so I am kinda new again but if my ph is 7.3 do I add ph up or ph down
Answer: Depends on what kind of fish you have and what pH is suitable for that. Having said that, 7.2-7.4 is most common so I would just leave it at 7.3 unless your fish over other requirements.
Question: how long till i can dose again if i have no fish in tank
Answer: I wait 2 hours. I have well water with a seriously high pH---somewhere over 8.8. Even with fish in the tank I have to bring it down fast. There's always a rebound rise of the pH, so it takes me 48 hours or more. I always do the water change on a Saturday so I can get it under control before I go to work on Monday.
Question: how long till i can dose again if i have no fish in tank
Answer: First you should get your biocycle working correctly along with your pH and add to the bayou to it so liquid for you put it in and let it start going and then your pH should say it one level for three or four or five days and then when that does that then adjust your pH story wanted then when you add fish to it you'll probably have to adjust it and I know how many fish you put into it

User questions & answers

Question: How many times do I need to dose this for my 10 gal nano tank
Answer: You need to get a milliliter dropper from the drug store or a horse feed store. For a ten gallon tank, 1 ml. Each day when the lights come on, make sure and drip it slowly into strong water flow so you do not hurt the fish. Plants need a source of carbon everyday. I run my leds lights 8 hours a day to keep algae down. Make sure and use RO water only, not tap water. Look at the seachem plant products for freshwater aquarium
Question: I read that some co2s have antibacterial properties, which i'm looking to avoid. does this one
Answer: API does not make any claims on CO2 booster having any antibacterial properties.
Question: Is this safe to use with Bettas and glass catfish
Answer: I would think so as it is what plants take in from the fish as they exhale. It is a symbiotic relationship. However I am not an expert.
