12 best diy aquarium heaters
DIY aquarium heaters are homemade or customized heating solutions used in aquariums to maintain a stable and appropriate water temperature for fish and aquatic pets. These DIY heaters are often created by aquarium enthusiasts who want a cost-effective or specialized heating solution for their tanks. Here's what you should know about DIY aquarium heaters:
Purpose: The primary purpose of an aquarium heater is to ensure that the water temperature remains within a suitable range for the specific fish species in the tank. Tropical fish, for example, require warmer water than cold-water fish.
DIY Heater Types: There are different types of DIY aquarium heaters, including:
Submersible Heaters: These are the most common type of DIY aquarium heaters. They are submerged directly into the water and typically consist of a heating element inside a glass or plastic tube. DIY submersible heaters can be built using resistive heating elements, thermostats, and temperature sensors.
External Heaters: Some DIY solutions involve heating the water externally before it enters the aquarium. This can be achieved through custom-built heat exchangers or by repurposing other heating equipment.
Components: DIY aquarium heaters often require the following components:
Heating Element: This is the part responsible for generating heat. It can be a resistive heating coil, a heating rod, or even a repurposed heating element from another device.
Thermostat: A thermostat is essential to regulate the temperature. DIY thermostats can be mechanical or electronic and are used to switch the heater on and off as needed to maintain the desired temperature.
Temperature Sensor: A sensor, such as a thermocouple or thermistor, is used to measure the water temperature. It communicates with the thermostat to control the heater.
Control Circuitry: DIY aquarium heaters may require additional control circuitry to manage the heating element, thermostat, and temperature sensor effectively.
Safety Considerations: Safety is paramount when working with DIY aquarium heaters. Inadequately constructed heaters can malfunction, potentially harming the fish and damaging the aquarium. Ensuring waterproof seals, proper insulation, and reliable thermostat control are crucial for safety.
Monitoring and Maintenance: DIY heaters may require regular monitoring to ensure they are maintaining the correct temperature. Users should also perform routine maintenance to clean and inspect the heater components for wear or damage.
Sizing: It's essential to correctly size your DIY aquarium heater to match the size of your aquarium and the specific heat requirements of your aquatic pets.
Regulatory Compliance: Some regions may have regulations governing the use of aquarium heaters and related equipment. DIY aquarium heater builders should be aware of and adhere to any local regulations.
In summary, DIY aquarium heaters can be a cost-effective solution for maintaining the temperature of your aquarium water within the required range for your aquatic pets. However, constructing and using DIY heaters requires a good understanding of electrical and safety principles to ensure the well-being of your fish and the longevity of your aquarium equipment.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have the fluval flex 32.5 gallon tank. which heater should i get? thank you |
Answer: | Where do you live? I live in FL where the average temp of my fish room is 75. I have M200 (200W rated for a 65 gallon tank) on my 75 gallon tanks. If you live in Maine, the average temp is probably 60-65 of your fish room. you will need the M300 ( 300W rated for 80 gallons) or maybe 2 of them to heat the same 75 gallon tank. with that said, I think you will be find with the M100 or M50 will be fine for your 32 gallon tank. just make sure they will fit. when you set it up, put the heater in the tank, let it sit for a day or at least a few hours before you turn it on.. see what temp the tank is, turn the heater on the lowest setting and slowly turn it up to the match the tank temp. let it sit there for a hour or so, then set it to what ever temp you want. Don't trust the dial that states what the temp is, it may be off by 1 or 2 degrees. Be sure to monitor the temp for a few days to make any adjustments. Heaters will not change the temp of the tank instantly, it may take a few hours. |
Question: | How long does it take to heat a 15 gallon tank |
Answer: | The instructions say: "Wait 30 minutes before connecting to the electrical outlet. This allows the heater to adjust to the aquarium water temperature. Note that it may take up to 12 hours for the eater to attain the water temperature you have selected." That being said, my experience is that it is quite a bit faster than that. Of course, that depends on what temperature the water started at! (i.e., how cold is your room). Please note that thre 50 watt model is rated for 15 gallon MAX. That means if you want wiggle room, you might consider the 100 watt version. Again, however, my experience is that the 50 watt was adequate for my 15gallon. But my house is not cold. |
Question: | Can it go compleatly under water |
Answer: | Yes it can, "Cord and all" (but not the plug) according to the Fluval representitive I spoke to at Fluval customer service. I've had mine completely submerged ever since and havnt had any problems. Just remember not to keep it on if you have to empty tank water behond the bottom line. |
Question: | Can you adjust the heat with this heater? Does it have a dial |
Answer: | Yes, it's easy to adjust, and keeps the tank a constant temp. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the heater havr to be fully submerged or can the top part be out of the water |
Answer: | The top (with temperature settings) can stick out of the water if you want, but it doesn't have to. However, everything below the very top with the temperature settings MUST be underwater. |
Question: | I have a 30gl. planter, I keep 2 gold fish in on my porch I did not want to bring them in. had a 50 watt heater in it but the water froze recommend |
Answer: | gold fish are cold water fish....most people don't use a heater but I would say get a pond heater for that....the planter is holding the cold more than a tank would |
Question: | will this work without problems in a 75 gal. tank, I keep my water at 80 degrees. Had another would only bring temp up to 76 degrees |
Answer: | Yes i have mine in my 75gallon and its kepping water at 79.3 for me. Ive had mine for over a yr and it still works great!! |
Question: | Is a 300 watt okay for 40 gallon tank |
Answer: | Well it will certainly work but it's overkill. a 40 gallon should only require a 100 - 150 watt model. This one is cheaper so you might as well. That way if you ever upgrade your tank you already have a larger heater. |

User questions & answers
Question: | My heater stopped workin shows ec and er codes. is only 4 months old |
Answer: | Mine did too. How did you return it? My return window closed through Amazon. |
Question: | My heater screen goes black and also now it says er(error) and won't heat at all. I have not even had it 3 months yet. Can I get past the code |
Answer: | Same thing happened to mine, I assumed it was from the humidity of being near my sump so I ordered a replacement. Contact their customer service they were great to work with |
Question: | So how do we use it if we do have gravel on the bottom of our aquarium? Why can it not touch gravel |
Answer: | You can place it horizontally or vertically as long as it is fully submerged and not touch the gravel. This is because the heat differential between the untouched portion of the heater’s glass tube and the area in contact with the substrate can stress the surface and cause micro-cracks. For this reason, make sure the heater’s surface is free and clear of all obstructions. |
Question: | Only one wire length is listed at 5ft. There are two cords, one to the wall and one between the controller and heater. Are both cords 5ft |
Answer: | Yes, both cords 5ft. |
