8 best dental hygiene
Dental hygiene is a critical aspect of maintaining a dog's overall health and well-being. While it may not be directly related to cookies, biscuits, snacks, or treats for dogs, it's important to understand how these aspects can impact your pet's oral health. Here's what you need to know about dental hygiene for dogs:
Importance of Dental Hygiene:
- Dental hygiene is crucial for dogs because oral health issues can lead to pain, discomfort, and various health problems.
- Poor dental hygiene in dogs can result in conditions like gum disease, tooth decay, bad breath, and even systemic health issues when bacteria from the mouth enter the bloodstream.
Oral Care Products:
- Dental care products for dogs include toothbrushes, dog-specific toothpaste, dental chews, and toys designed to promote oral health.
- Toothbrushes for dogs are available in various sizes and designs, including finger brushes and traditional toothbrushes with soft bristles.
- Dog-specific toothpaste comes in flavors that appeal to dogs and is safe for them to swallow. Never use human toothpaste on dogs as it can be harmful.
Dental Chews and Toys:
- Dental chews and toys are designed to help clean a dog's teeth as they chew and play. These products often have textured surfaces that can help remove plaque and tartar buildup.
- Chewing on appropriate items can also satisfy a dog's natural instinct to chew and help prevent destructive chewing behavior.
Regular Dental Checkups:
- Regular veterinary checkups should include an examination of your dog's oral health. Your vet can detect dental issues early and provide guidance on how to address them.
- Professional dental cleanings performed by a veterinarian may be necessary to remove stubborn plaque and tartar.
Diet and Treats:
- The type of food and treats you give your dog can impact their dental health. Dental-specific diets and treats are available that help reduce plaque and tartar buildup.
- Some treats are designed to promote oral health by scraping away plaque as the dog chews.
Home Dental Care Routine:
- Establishing a regular dental care routine at home is essential. This may include brushing your dog's teeth, providing dental chews or toys, and offering dental treats.
- Consistency is key, and it may take time for your dog to get used to these routines.
Signs of Dental Problems:
- Watch for signs of dental problems in your dog, including bad breath, swollen or bleeding gums, difficulty eating, loose or missing teeth, and excessive drooling. If you notice any of these issues, consult your veterinarian.
In conclusion, dental hygiene is a vital aspect of your dog's overall health. Proper dental care, including regular cleaning, appropriate products, and veterinary checkups, can help ensure your pet has a healthy mouth and a better quality of life. While treats and snacks are enjoyable for dogs, it's important to balance them with a focus on dental health to prevent oral issues.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are the mirror heads replaceable |
Answer: | not sure but anyway instruments rust really fast.... |
Question: | Can these be sterilized in an autoclave |
Answer: | Yes, they can be sterilized in an autoclave. |
Question: | has anyone had this product get stuck on dogs tooth or cross wise in their mouth |
Answer: | no. I give it to my dog in the evening after his meal to help clean his teeth. Never seen it get stuck on his teeth. He absolutely looks forward to it every night. We also brush his teeth every night with dog tartar preventive toothpaste. |
Question: | How many calories in 25 to 50 lb. dogs |
Answer: | 10-24 lbs. is 47.7 calories per chew; 25-50 lbs. is 80.5 calories per chew; and over 50 lbs. is 128.2 calories per chew. Found the information on 1-800-PetMeds. |
Question: | My dog tends to swallow things whole. Are these large enough that a terrirer would still have to gnaw on them for awhile |
Answer: | My dog is one of those dogs that will gulp down anything that smells good. We have to really watch her closely when giving her something hard like this. My dog weighs about 18 pounds and what I do, so that she won't gulp the chew down whole, I raise up her lips and tap her teeth with it, so she will know it is something hard. Then I give it to her. It is a really hard chew and had to take her time to get it chewed. She chewed it on her back teeth where she has some gingivitis over her two bottom back teeth. Now remember, my dog is little, but she is terrible at just wolfing down something that smells good and has gotten choked many times in her life. We can't give her rawhide bones and when we give her anything that is a little hard, I just pull her lips up and tap her teeth with it and show her it is hard. She does well when I do this. I think the size of the chew is just right for her. Her weight stays around 16 to 19 pounds. She gains a little in the winter. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Product description says "available through veterinarians only". These are "shipped and sold by Muddy and Inca". These fake |
Answer: | Products such as these (marked available only through veterinarians) that end up at non-veterinary sources are called "gray market". This is very subject to counterfeiting. They are sometimes the real thing (sold to wholesalers by vets who buy a large quantity) and sometimes fake. There have been prosecutions of companies who produce counterfeit boxes for example. Because they look the same does not mean they are. |

OraVet Dental Hygiene Chews for Dogs
Plaque and calculus are very common problems in dogs. Plaque forms when bacteria attach to teeth, and over time, this plaque hardens to form calculus (tartar). The accumulation of plaque and calculus can lead to bad breath and other problems.
The dual-action approach of OraVet Chews doesn’t just clean teeth and freshen breath. It creates a barrier to help protect against plaque, calculus, and bad breath.
Bacteria Leads to Plaque
Plaque can lead to a whole host of frightening problems.
What to you is bad breath could be something more frightening; bacteria building up on teeth and gums. As plaque accumulates, it hardens, and turns into calculus, also known as tartar.
Left without cleaning, plaque and calculus continue to build up, attracting even more bacteria, leading to more bad breath. That's why it is so important to help remove the buildup.
How to Look for Plaque and Calculus in Your Dog
Just lift your dog's lips and have a look. Plaque is a soft, sticky film that builds up on teeth and can be difficult to see since it is colorless.
As more plaque accumulates, it can have more of a whitish/yellowish appearance making it easier to spot. Calculus, on the other hand, is mineralized and the buildup is easy to see. It often appears as a yellow or brownish buildup on the surface of the teeth.
Daily Oral Care Means Easier Checkups
Just like with people, it’s important for dogs to have regular dental checkups. And also like you, it’s important for dogs to get daily care for their teeth, for a smoother, easier checkup.

User questions & answers
Question: | Have you corrected the case problem pictured by the June 2020 reviewer |
Answer: | I use this equipment occasionally because l do all that l can to help my oral hygiene. As far as any noticeable changes l would say l have noticed some. |
Question: | Where are they made |
Answer: | Hello,The OraVet Chews are made in the U.S.A. Thank you |
Question: | Are they grain free |
Answer: | No, per the product description, they contain corn, wheat and soy. |
Question: | My dog hates greenies. Is this similar in taste |
Answer: | Don't know about the taste but all 4 of our dogs eat them with great enthusiasm! My vet highly recommended them. Seems to be a win for all of us. |
Question: | Should you feed them a chew after they eat |
Answer: | I would tread lightly here due to the fact that the chemicals released when the dog chews the chew could upset the animal's stomach and cause the usual digestive issues as gas, soft stool or diarrhea. Some dogs are not bothered at all but I would be careful with getting the dog acclimated to the chew after eating. |

Question: | My dog is 28-29 lbs, should I get Small or Medium size |
Answer: | Medium is 25 to 50 lbs |
Question: | Photo of bag shows this is for medium dogs (25-50 lbs), but it says it's for extra small dogs. which is it |
Answer: | It’s for medium dogs. I would say it’s too big for a dog under 25 lbs. mine is 45 and it’s the right fit. She is able to really chew on it to get in her teeth like it should. |
Question: | Photo of bag shows this is for medium dogs (25-50 lbs), but it says it's for extra small dogs. which is it |
Answer: | The bags I get show a terrier type dog and says it’s for dogs-10-24 lbs. and 6 months of age and older. I do order through Amazon. Not sure where you are getting the different packaging. Not sure how helpful this Delmopinol Technology is, in protecting dog’s teeth. Bailey just had a couple of teeth pulled. My vet’s response was, “he might have lost more teeth”, so, no way to tell for sure. |
Question: | any meat product of any kind, my dog cant have any meat product, not even broth |
Answer: | This product has “natural poultry flavor”. It also has “powdered cellulose”. The label lists “Guaranteed Analysis” of 30% crude protein, crude fat 5.5%, and another crude fat 8%. Where does the fat come from? |
