8 best ringworm treatment for horses
Ringworm is a fungal skin infection that can affect horses, similar to its impact on other animals. To treat ringworm in horses, various products related to grooming and pet supplies, such as shampoos and antifungal treatments, can be used. Here's what you need to know:
Antifungal Shampoos: There are specialized antifungal shampoos available for horses that are effective in treating ringworm. These shampoos typically contain active ingredients like miconazole or ketoconazole, which target the fungus causing the infection. You should follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific product you choose.
Grooming: Proper grooming practices are essential when dealing with ringworm in horses. Infected areas should be carefully cleaned, and the surrounding hair should be clipped to prevent the spread of the fungus. Be sure to disinfect grooming tools after each use to avoid cross-contamination.
Topical Treatments: Some topical treatments, such as creams or ointments, may also be used to target ringworm lesions directly. These products should be applied as directed by a veterinarian.
Isolation: Infected horses should be isolated from other horses to prevent the spread of the infection. Proper quarantine measures are essential during treatment.
Veterinary Guidance: It's crucial to consult with a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan for ringworm in horses. They can recommend the most suitable antifungal products and provide guidance on treatment duration and care.
Pet Supplies: While products related to pet supplies may include grooming tools and shampoos, it's crucial to select products specifically designed for horses. Using products intended for other animals may not be as effective in treating equine ringworm.
Remember that ringworm in horses can be stubborn to treat, and it may take several weeks to completely resolve the infection.Strict hygiene practices and consistent treatment are essential to ensure a full recovery and to prevent the spread of the fungus to other animals.
Below you can find our editor's choice of the best ringworm treatment for horses on the marketRingworm in horses is a common fungal skin infection that can affect their coat, mane, and tail. Treating ringworm in horses involves a combination of topical and sometimes systemic treatments. Here are some key points about ringworm treatment for horses:
Isolate the Infected Horse: First, isolate the infected horse from others to prevent the spread of the fungus.
Topical Antifungal Shampoos: You can use specialized antifungal shampoos or medicated horse shampoos that contain ingredients like chlorhexidine or povidone-iodine. These shampoos help cleanse the affected areas and combat the fungal infection. Follow the instructions on the product label for proper application.
Clipping and Cleaning: In severe cases, it may be necessary to clip the horse's hair around the affected areas to improve the effectiveness of topical treatments. Afterward, gently clean the affected areas with an antifungal shampoo and a soft brush or sponge.
Topical Antifungal Creams: In addition to shampoos, you can also apply antifungal creams or ointments directly to the affected areas. Over-the-counter products formulated for ringworm in horses can be used.
Systemic Medications: If the infection is extensive or not responding to topical treatments, a veterinarian may prescribe systemic antifungal medications. These are administered orally and are more potent. They should only be used under veterinary supervision, as there can be side effects.
Environmental Cleaning: Thoroughly clean and disinfect the horse's environment, including stalls, grooming equipment, and blankets. Ringworm spores can persist in the environment and reinfect the horse.
Quarantine Period: Continue treatment and isolation until the horse's skin has completely healed, and there are no signs of active infection. This may take several weeks.
Consult a Veterinarian: It's essential to involve a veterinarian in the treatment process, especially if the infection is severe or doesn't improve with initial treatments. A veterinarian can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend the most suitable treatment plan for your horse.
Remember that ringworm can be contagious to humans and other animals, so take precautions when handling an infected horse and wear gloves and protective clothing.
It's crucial to follow the specific treatment plan recommended by your veterinarian for the best chance of successfully treating ringworm in horses. Regular monitoring and maintaining good hygiene practices in the stable can help prevent future outbreaks.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this the same "Chlorhexidine 2% Solution" that I get from my vet to use on my cats' little scratches, irritations, etc |
Answer: | Ask your vet. Chlorhexidine may be the active ingredient in what they give you. It's in some soaps, shampoos and wipes. Even this 2% solutiin is highly concentrated and is often dilluted more with plain water for many uses. So it could be this and already dilluted. |
Question: | Does this have added fragrance? Thanks in advance for your help and time |
Answer: | yes, according to another reply regarding ingredients: usp purified water, alkyl dimethylamine oxide, chlorhexidine gluconate,polyoxyethhylene-6-cocoamide, octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol, glycerin, polyethylene glycol, hydroxyethylcellulose, fragrance and fdc blue #1. |
Question: | Can you use this to clear dogs tear stains |
Answer: | NO! It should not be used near the dogs eyes. It will sting and burn the eyes. |
Question: | Item states it's 2% solution but reviewers state they dilute it further? Also shampoos and other ready to apply solutions are 2-4% I'm lost here |
Answer: | According to studies, solution as week as 0.12% are sufficient for killing microbes in 30 seconds. In fact that is the strength of effective oral rinse. HIbiclens is 4% which is quite strong. I think for washing I would pets I'd probably dilute down to .75 to 1%. |
