8 best pet shampoos for dog cats
Pet shampoos for dogs and cats are specially formulated grooming products designed to clean and maintain the health and hygiene of your pets' coats. These shampoos cater to the unique needs of different pet species, and they play a crucial role in keeping your furry friends clean and comfortable. Here's what you should know:
Variety of Formulas:
Regular Shampoos: These are the most common type of pet shampoos and are suitable for routine baths. They help remove dirt, oil, and odors from your pet's coat, leaving it clean and fresh.
Hypoallergenic Shampoos: Designed for pets with sensitive skin, hypoallergenic shampoos contain gentle ingredients that are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions.
Medicated Shampoos: These shampoos are formulated to address specific skin and coat issues, such as dryness, dandruff, fungal or bacterial infections, and flea and tick infestations. They may require a veterinarian's recommendation.
Waterless Shampoos: Waterless shampoos come in spray or foam form and are a convenient option for quick cleanups between traditional baths.
Tear-Free Shampoos: These shampoos are designed to be gentle on your pet's eyes, reducing the risk of irritation or discomfort during the bath.
Ingredients:
- Pet shampoos typically contain a combination of mild cleansing agents, moisturizers, and conditioners.Look for shampoos with natural ingredients that are free from harsh chemicals and fragrances, as these can be less likely to cause skin irritation.
pH Balance: Pet shampoos are formulated to match the pH level of your pet's skin, which is different from human skin. Using a shampoo with the appropriate pH balance helps maintain the health of your pet's skin and coat.
Flea and Tick Shampoos: Some pet shampoos are designed to repel or eliminate fleas and ticks. These may contain insect-repelling ingredients such as pyrethrin or natural alternatives like neem oil.
Instructions for Use:
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for diluting and applying the shampoo. Make sure to thoroughly rinse your pet to remove all shampoo residue.
- Be cautious when shampooing around the face, ears, and eyes, and use a tear-free formula if available.
- Avoid over-bathing your pet, as excessive washing can strip their coat of natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.
Choosing the Right Shampoo:
- Consult with your veterinarian to select the most appropriate shampoo for your pet's specific needs, especially if your pet has skin or coat issues.
- Consider your pet's breed, coat type, and any allergies or sensitivities when choosing a shampoo.
Regular grooming, including bathing with the right pet shampoo, is essential for the health and comfort of your dogs and cats. Properly maintaining their coats can help prevent skin issues, reduce shedding, and keep your pets looking and feeling their best.

User questions & answers
Question: | does a pump fit this container? Any suggestions on which pump to buy |
Answer: | They're cotton towels not microfiber so "wicking" isn't really in the job description. They are good for mopping a sweaty brow, but I would say they retain moisture. At this price though, if your towel is feeling damp you can grab a fresh one and still have a basket full in reserve. |
Question: | How often can you bathe your dog using this shampoo? Will be ok to use it weekly |
Answer: | I use very heavy bleach on these (white), each one has been washed and bleached about 190 to 220 times in less than a year and they are great. No loss of white color (white is still ... white, not orange, tan, gray, whatever!). So I assume the manufacturer is only referring to colors other than white. I bought Wal-mart versions of these at the same time, same frequent use and bleaching, and those lost most of their cotton, have holes in them(!), and the edges are shredded. So yes, these are definitively (and chlorine) bleach-safe for white color. |
Question: | does a pump fit this container? Any suggestions on which pump to buy |
Answer: | They are nice, but not meant to be as soft as bath towels. |
Question: | Can it be used on cats |
Answer: | Good question |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work on skin yeast |
Answer: | So far it has worked the best. I make sure to wash my brushes after each bath. Not to reinfect. |
Question: | Will this shampoo work for ringworm on dogs |
Answer: | I don't know. I'd go to the vet as ringworm spreads so rapidly (from animal to animal - and from animal to human.) I found this product a pleasant pet shampoo but whether it's effective as an anti-fungal at all, I don't know. My bottle listed ingredients including 1% Ketoconazole. I've zip medical training but have (merely) READ that some over-the-counter anti-fungals (sold as remedies for jock-itch; athletes foot, etc) contain 1% or 2% Ketoconazole. Still, I think I'd go to the vet right away for ringworm - or at least start off at the locale pharmacy having a chat with a pharmacist about 1% Ketoconazole, OTC remedies and ringworm in general. |
Question: | Can I use a conditioner on my dog after the shampoo |
Answer: | Yes that would not be a problem. |
Question: | Does this shampoo have a strong medicine smell or does it smell nice |
Answer: | it smells nice... not strong, I suppose not to cause allergy. |

User questions & answers
Question: | My Staffordshire Terrier is loosing hair around her eyes and ears again...I have added some things to her diet for her immune system...will this work |
Answer: | I took my dog to the vet. After doing a skin test determined it was some kind of bacteria or fungus causing it. She suggested I bathe him with this shampoo in and epsom salt bath and it worked almost immediately. I'd check with your vet to be sure it isn't something more serious, but if it is what my Caddy had - this worked very well. |
Question: | The shampoo says not for otic use - can it be used to wash the fur on the outside of the ear and where the giant lop ears (Newf) cover |
Answer: | Hi, and thanks for your question. You may wash fur safely, but best to stay away from ears, eyes, and mouth. Product should not be ingested. For ears we suggest using our Chlorhexidine wipes instead. They are sold in an XL size if you need something larger than a pad. Pet MD Team |
Question: | Does it treat ringworms on cats |
Answer: | Yes, this will treat fungal infections like ringworm for dogs, cats and horses. |
Question: | What are the percentages of Chlorhexidine and ketoconozole |
Answer: | Hello, there is 2% Chlorhexidine and 1% Ketoconazole in this shampoo. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone used this on cat dandruff? Is it effective for this? He doesn't itch but he's just covered in white flakes |
Answer: | I haven’t used it on my cat since she isn’t having dandruff but, I’ve used it on my short haired chihuahua. It works well but, doesn’t completely eliminate the flakes. I think it would help your cat’s dandruff though. |
Question: | Should you wear gloves when applying the shampoo to,the dog |
Answer: | Hi there, Thanks for reaching out. No, you do not need to wear gloves while using this. Instructions/Cautions are written on the label. Best, Pet MD Team |
Question: | What is the percentage of benzoyl peroxide? Is it |
Answer: | Hello, that is correct. There is 3% Benzoyl Peroxide. |
Question: | Does this shampoo help with hair falling out |
Answer: | Depends on the reason for hair/fur falling out. I think it's important to first take your pet to a veterinarian for a diagnosis of WHY fur is falling out -- could be a systemic or nutritional reason totally unrelated to anything that this shampoo would help. Benzoyl Peroxide shampoo was recommended by my vet for my German Shepherd's skin issues on his belly (itchy, crusty bumps). The shampoo clears up the problem and regular use keeps it from coming back. |
