My cat does not tolerate grooming. Two or three swipes of a brush or comb and he’s swiped at me claws out. I may get another swipe in before he resorts to hugging my hand while biting then kicking with his hind legs. I was about to resort to having him sedated and shaving him all over and he’s a beautiful long haired gray Nebelung breed (like Russian blue) so I really didn’t want to do this. Plus he is 11 years old so don’t want to put him through all that stress. His fur forms mats under his front leg armpits that eventually pull at the skin which it very painful. Cats skin it extremely thin here and I accidentally nicked him with scissors once since he wasn’t exactly cooperative. Thankfully he was fine but I was traumatized at the thought of going through this all the time. Thankfully I found this mat remover on a video on YouTube. I hold his skin at the base of the mat and after a few pulls with the mat remover it’s out. I don’t think he had ever gotten to the clawing and biting stage during these grooming sessions. Maybe one swipe as a warning to me to hurry it up but I’ll take that any day over the way it was. This really should be marketed for long haired cats! |

| Answer: | We use this rake on our multi house cats for over 8 years. That includes long haired kits and short hair. Long haired siamese and Mainecoon with their dense undercoat fur that really mats bad in spring and fall when fenced back yard is wetter or moist and sometimes weed seeds and sticky flower bed debri gets stuck in the fur making it worse even. Now a warning try it out on your scalp first to get the feel of how sharp those needles can be. Avoid pushing into the skin or dragging along the skin itself. And careful to cut away really bad mats or trim around to open them up before attempting to use this or similar brushes to yank the mats out. This can cause sores and really hurt your pet dogs too not just cats. Common sense goes a long ways. Four Paws has changed their design slightly and ordering two more to go with our 5 already around house. Having a few outside in summer and some kits show up for grooming when we are in our bathrooms so we keep one in two of those too and along our side tables in living room and you get the idea. Hugs to your pets and to good pet parents. By the way try out some of those other mat buster tools too they HURT and if they hurt us they are going to hurt kitty too. And I love to give my scalp a weekly go over with one of these myself and no not kitties my own. |
