11 best flea treatments
Flea treatments are essential for pet owners, especially those with dogs, to protect their pets from flea infestations. There are various types of flea treatments available, including flea drops and flea tick control products, all designed to keep your furry friends healthy and comfortable.
Flea Drops: Flea drops are a popular method for treating and preventing flea infestations in dogs. These treatments typically come in small vials or tubes and are applied topically to your dog's skin, usually between the shoulder blades or along the back. The active ingredients in flea drops are designed to kill adult fleas and prevent their eggs and larvae from developing. Some well-known brands for flea drops include Frontline, Advantage, and Revolution.
Flea Tick Control: Flea and tick control products are often combined, as ticks are another common external parasite that can affect dogs. These products are designed to not only kill and repel fleas but also to target ticks. They come in various forms, including topical treatments, oral medications, and collars. Some popular options include Seresto collars, NexGard, and Bravecto.
Oral Medications: In addition to topical treatments, oral medications are available for flea control. These pills or chewable tablets can be a convenient option for pet owners who find it challenging to apply topical treatments to their dogs. Oral medications like Capstar and Comfortis can kill fleas quickly after ingestion.
Flea Shampoos and Sprays: Flea shampoos and sprays are another option for immediate relief from fleas. These products are typically used during a bath and can help to kill fleas on contact. However, they may not provide long-term protection like other treatments.
Natural Remedies: Some pet owners prefer to use natural remedies to control fleas. Ingredients like neem oil, diatomaceous earth, and apple cider vinegar are believed to have flea-repelling properties. While these remedies may help in some cases, they may not be as effective as commercial treatments.
Preventive Measures: Along with regular flea treatments, it's essential to practice preventive measures to keep your home and pet flea-free. This includes regular vacuuming, washing pet bedding, and maintaining a clean environment. Additionally, it's crucial to treat all pets in your household, as fleas can easily spread among animals.
It's important to consult with your veterinarian to determine the most suitable flea treatment for your dog's specific needs. Not all products are suitable for every pet, and your vet can provide guidance based on factors like your dog's age, size, and health status. Additionally, always follow the instructions on the product label to ensure safe and effective use.

User questions & answers
Question: | My dog is exactly 20 pounds. Should I purchase the large breed dose (21 -59lb) or the (11-20lb |
Answer: | I have a Westie that weighs 21lbs. At 20 lbs, I used the smaller dose. At 21 lbs, I'm using the large dose. However, I spread the application out to 5+ weeks. |
Question: | Is this safe for sight hounds and/or dogs over the age of 12? Thank you for taking time to answer |
Answer: | Yes, there should be no issue when using on a sight hound. I use this on my Brittney with no issues. Be advised this does not " repel" ticks. Ticks will still get onto your dog and can/will bite however, the tick will be impaired/ killed over a few hours time after biting. When used with a organic spray for Ticks you should have no issues. I have never had a flea on my dog nor my 2 cats. I recommend this product fully. Be sure to match your dog's weight with the correct Advantix. |
Question: | What is the expiration date on this $41 product currently for sale |
Answer: | The expiration date is usually stamped into the package. And $41 is very good price for k9 Advantix II. It's often quite more expensive from your vet or other sites. |
Question: | I am thinking about ordering a 6 pack which some would be kept for next year. How do I know what the date is on the product |
Answer: | I looked everywhere on the individual package of the tubes and the box, there is nothing that mentions an expiration or use by date. There are phone numbers to call for questions...1-800-255-6826. Looking at how the tubes are packaged, my best guess would be that as long as they are sealed properly and not opened you could probably use unopened tubes at a later time. I have 2 dogs and ordered the six pack myself, if I don't use give my girls all 3 of their doses this year I will probably use it up next summer then. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this 6 month supply a 6 pack of tubes |
Answer: | Hi Doreen... Actually, I bought the 4 pack because I have four cats. I had earlier in the month bought a 4 pack someplace else, so I had two treatments for each cat. I did the treatments three weeks apart (the instructions say it is OK to do if you wait seven days). I bought the 9+ lb. package as three of the cats are well over that weight. One cat is a bit smaller and I didn't use quite all of the tube on her. None of the cats had any bad reactions, and it worked well for three of them. The other cat (partial Maine Coon) had some results, but not so good. |
Question: | Does this kill ticks? If not, what do people recommend for ticks |
Answer: | To get rid of fleas and ticks use Frontline Plus. I started to use it on mine a year ago it killed the ticks and fleas. I reapply it every other month and I haven’t seen one since. |
Question: | When using this medicine, do I also need to flea bomb or spray the apartment ? Or will the medicine kill all fleas in the apartment, as well |
Answer: | VACUUM EVERY DAY. Or at least every other day. You will NEVER get rid of all the fleas if you don't treat the environment as well as the animal(s). In addition to the Advantage II, I used Knockout spray and also shampooed my cat. She has now had two doses of the Advantage and I have been spraying and vacuuming every other day and I finally feel like I have the upper hand! Even when you think they are gone, keep treating your cat and house. All it takes is one flea to start an infestation. |
Question: | Why is the item called "Bayer K9 Advantix II Flea and Tick Control Treatment for Cats"? The Bayer K9 is, of course, for dogs |
Answer: | Please be sure to use ONLY Feline Advantage on cats and use ONLY the dog Advantage on dogs! The use of canine Advantage on cats WILL kill them giving them severe neurological damage! I wish that Advantage would make the packaging TOTALLY different for cats and dogs, it would help. Especially with people who may not see the difference at first glance. My elderly mom accidentally applied the large dog Advantage to her cat and it had to be put down. Mom has felt horrible about it. Awful experience. Also about dosing, I have a 19 year old cat and I have used feline Advantage on him every summer for about 3 months for well over 17 years. It works wonderfully for him. I have always used the large cat product but since he has lost some weight this year I called Bayer and asked if I should use a smaller dose. The person at Bayer explained that Advantage works on body AREA as well as weight. So even though my cat has lost some weight (he's 9 pounds) his body AREA is still the same (loose skin) and so I have been applying the large cat dose and it has worked well for him this summer with no ill effects. I cannot speak to the authenticity of this Amazon product as I purchase my Advantage from the local pet store. |

FRONTLINE Plus Flea and Tick Treatment for Dogs
Made with two tough ingredients, FRONTLINE Plus helps you rid your pet of fleas and ticks, and prevent further infestations.
The first, fipronil, attacks adult fleas and ticks. The second, (S)-methoprene, attacks flea eggs and larvae. They work together to exterminate all month long.
FRONTLINE Plus also breaks the flea life cycle by destroying the next generation of flea eggs and larvae—giving you the power to help prevent a flea infestation on your pet.
Because it stores in the sebaceous glands in the skin, it constantly replenishes the protection for 30 days, working even if your pet gets wet.
Break the Flea Life Cycle
Flea infestations start with just two fleas laying hundreds of flea eggs within a matter of days. FRONTLINE Plus prevents an infestation by not only exterminating adult fleas—which comprise only 5% of the total flea population—but also by destroying flea eggs and larvae too.

User questions & answers
Question: | Hello. Does this kill flea eggs too or juts adults |
Answer: | Yes! this product DOES kill flea eggs also! Now, I will say in my experience, you may need to apply this product to the animal as well as floor, furniture, and bedding a second time in order to be sure the eggs are really treated and to catch any "sneaky" ones that may slip by. It is really very effective and economical. |
Question: | what does it contain |
Answer: | the flea and tick home spray is a great smelling spray that is safe to use.it can even be sprayed directly on your pet!! it contains only peppermint oil, clove extract and sodium lauryl sulfate.i had a bad experience spraying other chemical flea preparations, and found this which is safe and a more natural mixture.i really like it and have had good results. |
Question: | ticks |
Answer: | YES!!!!. When I was new to this tick infested area I had more than 10 attached to me (slow learner). The dog also had many but since he was on tick control the ticks died. I knew that he had to have brought live ticks to my bed......I sprayed the "dirty" spread and left the product on for 24 hours. After that I sprayed myself and the dog every time we went out. NEVER since the spraying did he have any nor did I any ticks attached and there was no tick infestation in the house (I was concerned about that). The only product I used was Vet's best. |
Question: | can this be used on cats |
Answer: | It clearly says it’s for home and DOGS. It even states after what age the dogs should be sprayed. It does not state it can be used on cats. They do have a cat version of the spray. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have a smell - chopped it up put in wet food cat would not touch it |
Answer: | No it does not smell. Do not chop it up . Take a little bit of the cat food and roll the pill in it. Then place the pill covered in cat food on top of the rest of the cat food. Make sure your cat is hungry, like the first thing in the morning. |
Question: | Can this be given in addition to a topical flea solution |
Answer: | A vet tech told me it is ok , but I play it safe and apply the topical (Advantage) 24 hours after the Capstar. |
Question: | Is this the medicine that makes the cat act nervous like something is biting it after about 20 minutes giving the pill |
Answer: | Capstar affect the nervous system of the fleas and they get spastic. The fleas get into a frenzy and squirm around on the cat. All that movement on the cats skin drive them a little crazy for 30-60 minutes. |
Question: | What is the difference between this and blue label Capstar |
Answer: | I would call the company, and see if they say, "We can get double our money for anyone with a small dog AND a cat." Many do not like cats as well as dogs and if the designers of this drug are members of those who like one species of pets, they may not care if your cat gets poisoned. and there are many foods that cats or dogs find poisonous, and for many who have indoor cats, the pills may expire before needing to use more. |

Question: | Still have fleas. Do I reapply before the month is up |
Answer: | I started using this like 2 yrs ago. It works very well. I have my cat take an oral pill one month and bath him in this amazing how it keeps him free of fleas. I want to say since the directions DO NOT specify do not use on kitties You probably could. It is safe and our cat has never had an issue. Leave on for 4 to 5 minutes working it in his fur then rinse very well. Use less the amount you would on a bigger cat. But I truly think its safe to use on your kitty. Just use less. you can use it every 2 weeks we do it every other month or so. I hope this is a help. I did some research and NO info out there states YOU cannot use on a kitty. Best regards |
Question: | All natural flea, tick protection for cats |
Answer: | No, I use it for the fleas |
Question: | Is it as good frontline gold |
Answer: | I have done so for my cats. Vets Best is plant based, i.e., peppermint oil and clove oil topical to repel fleas and ticks whereas Revolution is systemic medication absorbed through the skin. I would wait a week or so between the topical and the Revolution. |
Question: | How long will my cat scratch |
Answer: | Not sure about advantage 2 but I asked the vet about frontline and the answer was yes because it's natural you just want to wait 48 hours after putting on the frontline so you don't wash the meds off or use this first and then apply flea meds |

FRONTLINE Plus Flea and Tick Treatment for Cats

Question: | Do you have it in a six pack |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Does this protect against heartworms |
Answer: | Doubt it. It didnt work for fleas at all which is what it's made for. Ots crap |
Question: | How soon after application can I wash the dog? It has been a week since application |
Answer: | I washed my dog about 2 days after the application so it's ok for you to wash your dog |
Question: | This product contains the same ingredients as the cat formula (though in different ratio). How can the cat version be safe for cats |
Answer: | Ive done this before and it Will harm your cat. I thought since it had same ingredients that I’d save money by using 1 for my dog & the other two for my two cats A few days to a week later my cats had these huge wart looking things on their face, it scared me but I never thought about the flea med til I had to take both cars to vet. The vet looked at the cat and asked ‘did you use flea med for dogs on your cats’ so he instantly knew what it was, had to buy meds for cats and the vet bill & meds were crazy. Horrible mistake on my part but they were well in a few days. I hope this helps someone to not make the same mistake I did. (I read directions-was nobody’s fault but my own) |
