Answer:	I've had no problems with wear on the bits, or the guide. BUT, it is just a guide; it you don't apply pressure straight down, you are liable to cock the guide and drill the hole in the wrong place anyway.

Now clamp the drill guide in place so it can't move, while continuing to hold it in place with your free hand. Now chuck the bit and drill your hole, knowing that you will drill through your pencil mark.
