12 best dog car ramps
Dog car ramps are essential travel accessories for pet owners who want to ensure the safety and comfort of their canine companions during car rides. These ramps are designed to help dogs of all sizes and ages get in and out of vehicles with ease. Here's what you should know about them:
Purpose: Dog car ramps are primarily used to assist dogs in entering and exiting vehicles, such as cars, SUVs, and trucks. This is especially beneficial for older dogs, those with mobility issues, or large breeds that may have difficulty jumping into high vehicles.
Safety: Using a dog car ramp can help prevent injuries to your pet. Jumping in and out of a vehicle can strain their joints and muscles, leading to long-term health issues. Ramps provide a gradual incline, reducing the risk of injuries.
Design: Dog car ramps come in various designs, but they typically feature a non-slip surface to provide traction for your pet's paws. Some ramps are foldable for easy storage and transport, making them convenient for travel.
Weight Capacity: It's important to choose a ramp that can support the weight of your dog. Ramps are available in different weight capacities, so make sure to select one that matches your dog's size and weight.
Compatibility: Ensure that the dog car ramp you choose is compatible with your vehicle. Some ramps are designed for specific types of vehicles, while others are more versatile.
Training: Introducing your dog to a car ramp may take some time and training. Start by letting your dog get used to the ramp on flat ground before attempting to use it with your vehicle.
Benefits: Apart from the obvious convenience and safety benefits, dog car ramps can also minimize the risk of scratches and damage to your vehicle's interior caused by your dog's claws.
Cleaning and Maintenance: Regularly clean and maintain your dog car ramp to ensure it remains in good condition. This includes checking for any loose screws, cleaning the non-slip surface, and storing it properly when not in use.
Alternatives: While ramps are great for most dogs, some may prefer stairs or steps.Consider your dog's preferences and needs when choosing a travel solution.
In summary, dog car ramps are practical accessories for pet owners who want to make car travel safer and more comfortable for their dogs. They come in various styles and weight capacities, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your pet and vehicle. Proper training and maintenance will ensure the ramp remains effective and safe for your furry friend.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be left outdoors in the rain in Florida |
Answer: | I don't know about Florida, but we live in the Pacific Northwest, and I have been driving around with it in the back of my pickup for the past 3 years, and it is still in great shape. It rains alot here in the winter, and it can get pretty cold, plus it gets hot in the summer, and I have not had any problems with it cracking or warping, and the traction surface has not peeled off at all. |
Question: | How does the ramp hold on to the surface? I'm considering this for the dive platform of my boat so that my dog can get in and out of the water |
Answer: | the sandpaper surface was too abrasive for my dog's pads, so I put velcro and carpet on it for traction. That wouldn't work in water. Also I have found that the ramp slips around where it's edge rests on the tailgate and I have to hold it steady. This wouldn't work very well for a boat...even more slippery. pick something with good rubber feetPS...edited this post to include saying that if your dog is under 40lbs it should work fine if you attach better rubber grips to the "boat end" of the ramp |
Question: | Can this work with anold husky on a Subaru outback |
Answer: | I have a Subaru Forester and an old Norwegian Elkhound. This ramp works for us just fine! Tell you what, though: the angle is the thing. Find the specs for this ramp - the length, specifically. Then use a a stiff tape measure or something of equal length at the rear of your Outback to the ground to approximate the angle. That way, you can be the judge of whether your dog can handle it.Additionally, there is a world of dog ramps out there, widths & lengths. Maybe your dog needs a longer one (and therefore a less steep angle.) You'll have to figure that out.Good wishes. |
Question: | Do you think my 100-pound golden retriever would be able to get up in the back seat of a Ford F150 crew cab with this ramp |
Answer: | Absolutely. My 98 lb. German Shepherd gets into our SUV as well as into the back of my husbands extended cab GMC Truck with this ramp. It takes a little coaching and guidance at first - she was very hesitant to use it the first few times, but now she sees us put it up, and waits at the bottom - we always hold on to her collar because of the angle, just make sure she doesn't walk over the side. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is on the ramp to keep the dog from slipping |
Answer: | does this ramp stay secure? what is to keep it from tipping from side to side or tipping up when dog begins walking up ramp? thanks |
Question: | how wide is it and how wide is the foot path? Thanks |
Answer: | Overall width is 16 1/2 inches (excluding the handle) and the foot path is 13 1/8 inches on the one we purchased. |
Question: | I need to know if anyone has used this to help dogs get into house doors instead of them using steps |
Answer: | Yes, the ramp works great. I used it by my patio door for a dog that had arthritis and knee problems. The only one problem is that in the winter, I had to bring the ramp inside so it could thaw out from time to time. Otherwise it acted like slide for my dogs. Great product! |
Question: | Reviews from 2008/09 said there were very sharp edges from which some dogs suffered severe cuts. Has that problem been resolved |
Answer: | I am considering buying this ramp and have read most of the reviews before I make my decision. I just read a review dated 2011 that these sharp edges have since been corrected and the once sharp edges are now a sturdy protective plastic. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how long is this ramp? how much does it weigh |
Answer: | The dimensions listed with the item details are correct when the ramp is unfolded. Folded, the ramp is 27" x 16" x 7". My best guess at weight is approximately 10lbs. |
Question: | Has anyone found this ramp suitable to help an arthritic dog get on the bed too or just for vehicles |
Answer: | Depending on how high your bed maybe. This ramp may not be stable enough putting it on the bed. The steeper the ramp angle the more difficult it will be for your dog. My 12 yr old dog can just make it up the ramp into my SUV. However, the ramp does help. I use it for the front steps outside my house. I hope this helps you. Remember there is a learning curve for your dog using the ramp. Good luck! |
Question: | can this ramp be used on the back seat car door? or just the back |
Answer: | When in it's folded position, it is 8 inches high (16x26 inches wide/long) and is sturdy enough to use as a step stool for my 67lb older dog to get in to the back seat of the SUV. It does not fit as a ramp to the back seat of my Outlander, it tips and is unsafe - the door does not open wide enough to set it securely. I use the ramp for loading him in the back of the SUV and the folded stool for getting him in the back seat. |
Question: | Has anyone used one of these with a Transport? My pitbull is having trouble getting in and out of the truck these days, being that he's going on |
Answer: | Training and training. Just outside our back door for a couple of weeks so when our pets go out 3 or 4 times a day as they walk on it while exiting and entering the house. Their used to it when they enter or exit the truck. (2 big labs and a west highland terrier) 👍 |

User questions & answers
Question: | can we use this for our 5th wheel and the back |
Answer: | This ramp is very short and ended up being too steep for my dogs to climb up it into the back of our Honda Pilot. I even tried using it to get them into the back seat of our Subaru Legacy, but they wouldn't even try it. I'm really disappointed. |
Question: | how big of a ramp would I need to get a 75lb lab in and out of the backseat of a silverado 1500 pick up |
Answer: | Ramps generally come with fold capability. Yours is a large dog and I think he should have the large (71") ramp. I was looking at a 32" bi-fold (opens to 72" or so) for my 48 lb collie/sheepdog. Biggest problem here is that it will be heavy to carry, open, and "install" in a car. I very much liked the artificial grass-like surface for keeping the pup from slipping. Good luck. |
Question: | What are the folded dimensions? I would like to keep this on the floorboard of my Corolla |
Answer: | Not exactly sure the dimensions when folded. However, it will NOT fit on any floorboard. I drive a 2014 Subaru Forester and folded it still took up half my space in the back of my SUV which is mid-size. Also, it will slip when unfolded for the dog to use. The little strap to secure it pulled off mine with just 1 use. Then my dog which is a Dogo refused to use it. Good not even once and yes if you have a large sized dog, it is a waste of money. |
Question: | What is the weight limit for this ramp? I have a Bernese Mountain Dog (aprox 117 lbs), will it hold her |
Answer: | After checking out a lot of ramps we bought the extra wide 72" tri-fold ramp so that it would be easier and less scary for my dog to go up and down. Using treats on and off for 2 days and he now runs up to get his treats. I weigh 140 pounds and have walked up and down a good number of times without any issue. We stayed away from the shorter ramps as I made one and the incline was too steep. The Pet Gear ramp we bought has a surface that has great traction. Check around, but their big ramp is great. |

User questions & answers
Question: | My bed is 35” off the ground. Would this ramp reach that height without an incline that would be impossible for a small old dog to climb |
Answer: | I measured the height of my wife's Jeep - two feet to edge of back (aft) floor. Nine year old, overweight cocker, after one initial try, goes up and down easily. If the height of your vehicle (3 feet) creates too steep an incline, gluing some traction strips might help. The ramp is very versatile, but we still guard the dog, ascending and descending. |
Question: | Can you use this on a bed |
Answer: | If you have the room it would work |
Question: | What is it made of |
Answer: | Plastic w/ridges for traction and small side rails |
Question: | Can I use this ramp on deck steps |

Answer: | I use that one for my golden retriever to get in and out of the car. I have a 71 inch with the grass on it over the steps on my back deck which has 3 steps that he struggled with going up and down. So i leave that 71 inch ramp there for him all the time. He and the beagle uses it. |
Question: | What is the return policy |
Answer: | Mine arrived with a broken clip (no big deal) the company let me keep it and refunded 100% |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size is this ramp when folded up for storage |
Answer: | I don't have it in front of me right now, but I would estimate ~30" long, 20" wide, and 12" tall, much more bulky than I anticipated it would be. It handles my Lab and Golden fine, I just have to find somewhere to put it once those 2 are in the car! |
Question: | What is the angle like after set up? my 83lb retriever/pitt just had knee surgery. we cannot have too much strain on his back legs going up the ramp |
Answer: | Hi Ruby,The angle will depend on how high the back of your car is, every car/SUV is different. The ramp goes to 71" long, which is just under 6 feet. If you have a measuring tape you can put it at 71" and put on end on the back of your car and the other on the ground to see the angle. Let us know if you have more questions. Thanks, EZDogFences |
Question: | Will this ramp be secure for a side entry on an Avalanche |
Answer: | If you have a place to.hook the strap. The strap has a stl hook that you open by pressing with your hand to open and attach to something on your avalanche. |
Question: | Will this work for a Toyota Tacoma truck, 24 " high for great dane and english mastiff |
Answer: | I have a VW Golf 4 door and two german shepherds that weigh in at about 100lbs each. The angle would be steeper to get it to the tailgate of the truck, but it would be sturdy enough if you can convince your dogs to climb up it. My old dog (for whom i got the silly thing) acted like i was trying to get her to do something terrible. the tread material on it is also VERY scratchy. Like if you drag your knuckles on it, its gonna scrape you kind of scratchy. Dont slide it on the bumper when you're putting it in the truck either because it will scratch your paint. we ended up putting carpet stair treads on it to get our dogs to walk up and down because they have them on their steps at home and they were less weirded out about walking up it then. it is easy to unfold and fold with one person though, and its lightweight, but sturdy. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What weight of dog can it support |
Answer: | This product did not work for me. I have 2 dogs, 7 lbs and 10 lbs at the time I purchased it. The surface was so slick neither one could use it. The holes were so misaligned it could not be assembled fully, but well enough to try it with my very lightweight dogs. I don't recommend this product. It had a pretty steep pitch, as I recall, combined with the slippery covering. |
Question: | I purchased this ramp on sept 2016. it was fine at first and not my 8lb dog is sliding on it. how can i fix this issue? thanks |
Answer: | THIS IS FOR THE NEXT FEW QUESTIONS:..... Yank that carpet up completely. No matter how “good” a quality they put on the ramp in more recent years, any carpet will eventually get a little slick after time from repeated use. This is why a LOT of people slip and fall down their stairs. So yank off the carpet, go to your nearest big tool and appliance, etc. store (Lowe’s, Home Depot, whatever you have where you’re at) and get some non-skid. Cut some wide strips to size and lay that down all the way up your ramp (and of course on the flat part at the top, too). Your baby will be able to grip the ramp floor ALL the way up and have a little grip at the top to push off onto the bed. NO MORE SLIPPING/SLIDING. Also, an added benefit I discovered and LOVED! Every time they walk across the non-skid, they are getting a little nail trim; I found I wasn’t having to trim their nails nearly as much! —Now as far as the ramp breaking, at the time I bought my first one, I had a 60 pd pit bull baby that I KNEW would want to use the ramp that the little ones were using (because she had NO IDEA she wasn’t just as little as they were) so I reinforced it by cutting down a piece of 1/4” plywood and attaching it to the bottom of the ramp (about a 1/2” from around the edges). Then I added 2 4x4 legs somewhere midway where her weight MIGHT be a factor. Not everyone would want or even need to do all that. These are just some ideas to help with these first few questions. I liked this ramp and plan to order a few more but I’m getting ready to build my house and want to know exactly how many and where they are going to go. By the way, I’m a girl (well, 50 years old, but a girl at heart still) and figured out how to make this ramp work to my advantage for my doggies whom I love and adore with all my heart. It was NOT REALLY a lot of work or money (by the way, Lowe’s cut my plywood to the size I wanted so just ask them). So easy and cheap. Ramp is SOOOO worth it. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Maximum weight? my elderly german shepard weighs near 100 pounds...if i additional hardware to help stabilize, will it be sturdy enough for big dog |
Answer: | Hello -- In my opinion, I would not take the risk! I have a yellow lab and she weighs roughly 80 pounds. She has only three legs and the ramp split in two when she was less than half way up the ramp. She, of course, fell from the ramp and injured her front paws and I'm sure will never come near another "ramp" type device. For the safety of your "baby" I would definitely not recommend this item to you or anyone else! I can not recommend another product but I have NO reservations in cautioning and advising against this product. If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them if I can. |
Question: | I heard that the carpet on this was not good, and the most dogs would slide down. I contact Solvit and they have changed the carpet on this, true |
Answer: | I got my slide (I mean ramp) the other day. My 35lb very good climber slid off. She tried desperately to dig her nails in and it just made it worse. The carpet does have a texture and looks like it should be fine. I believe it's because the fibers are looped so although it's not flat, when stepping on it the fibers flatten in one direction and the texture becomes irrelevant. Maybe over time with use they get rougher. I spoke with the PetSafe people and they claimed there were no complaints about the carpet -- which is obviously very irritating -- but I really needed a ramp. This is my fix: I put this anti slide rubber sheet on top of the carpet, attached with carpet tape https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PY3IA4Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. There's nothing special about this brand, you can use the stuff to line drawers, the pad that goes under carpets. or mattress. It's all the same -- textured rubber that stops slipping. It's not all that much less slippery, but that texture seems to make all the difference. It was a pain in the butt and an added expense, but there aren't a lot of good ramp options. There's a great looking handmade one on Etsy, but it's about $60 more with shipping. If I did it all over I would probably get the Etsy one because I ended up spending extra anyway, but this fix seems to work and I could never rebox it to send it back. |
