Answer:	There are no batteries required for the toy/track itself. There are balls that can be purchased separately that light up and already come with batteries. The bad news is that the batteries are not replaceable. My multiple cats play with this toy everyday. One of my best purchases for my cats.

Answer:	Yes. I have the ball that comes with the track and additional ball, from the same company, that blinks red lights when motion activated in the track. We laugh because they play with it at night and it sounds like they are playing pool when the balls smack together. They like both of the balls in the track at the same time. It also gives the second cat a ball to play with.
