12 best chlorine for swimming pools
Chlorine is a commonly used chemical in the maintenance of swimming pools. It plays a crucial role in ensuring that pool water remains clean, safe, and free from harmful microorganisms. Here is some information about chlorine for swimming pools:
Sanitizing Agent: Chlorine is primarily used as a sanitizing agent in swimming pools. It helps kill and control bacteria, viruses, algae, and other microorganisms that can thrive in pool water. This sanitation process is essential for maintaining water quality and preventing the spread of waterborne illnesses.
Types of Chlorine: There are different types of chlorine products available for pool maintenance:
- Chlorine Tablets: These are slow-dissolving tablets that can be placed in a pool's skimmer or a dedicated chlorinator. They provide a consistent release of chlorine into the water over time.
- Chlorine Granules: Chlorine granules are a quick-dissolving form of chlorine that can be broadcast directly into the pool water.
- Liquid Chlorine: Liquid chlorine, also known as sodium hypochlorite, is a fast-acting option that can be added to the pool manually. It typically has a higher concentration of chlorine.
Chlorine Stabilizer: To prevent the breakdown of chlorine due to UV radiation from sunlight, a chlorine stabilizer (cyanuric acid) is often used. Stabilizers help prolong the effectiveness of chlorine in the pool water.
Balancing pH: Chlorine effectiveness is influenced by the pH level of the pool water. It's important to regularly test and adjust the pH to maintain an optimal range (typically between 7.2 and 7.8) for effective chlorine disinfection.
Chlorine Shock: Occasionally, a chlorine shock treatment is necessary to rapidly raise the chlorine levels in the pool, especially after heavy pool usage, rain, or other factors that may deplete chlorine levels. This helps break down organic contaminants and restore water clarity.
Safety Precautions: Chlorine should be handled with care. Always follow manufacturer instructions for storage and handling. It should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. When adding chlorine to the pool, avoid direct contact with skin and eyes, and be cautious of fumes.
Testing and Monitoring: Regularly test the chlorine levels in your pool water using a pool water testing kit or strips. The ideal chlorine level for most swimming pools falls within a range of 1 to 3 parts per million (ppm).
Chlorine Alternatives: Some pool owners explore alternative pool sanitation methods, such as saltwater chlorination systems or mineral-based sanitizers, as alternatives to traditional chlorine. These options can provide a gentler swimming experience for some individuals.
In summary, chlorine is a vital chemical in the maintenance of swimming pools, as it helps keep the water safe and clean by disinfecting it and preventing the growth of harmful microorganisms. Proper handling, storage, and regular testing are essential to ensure effective and safe pool chlorination.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be broken into halves |
Answer: | We are the manufacturer of HTH Super 3" Chlorinating Tablets. It would be unsafe to break the tablets. For more information please call us at 866-484-7665 and we will be happy to help. |
Question: | Why is shipping so long |
Answer: | Shipping has been updated |
Question: | Is this safw to use for small kiddie poola |
Answer: | These are way too large and strong for a kiddie pool. Buy a 1” floater and 1” tablets instead and only put 1 or 2 of them in it and check your chlorine levels daily. Also, the person who said you need a filtration system for these to work is right. These are way overkill for a kiddie pool!! If yours doesn’t have a filtration system, I would just stick to dumping it and refilling every couple days. Hope this helps. |
Question: | How many come in smallest pkg |
Answer: | Hi, we are the manufacturer of the HTH Super 3" Chlorinating Tablets. We have a single tablet and the next smallest size is 5 lbs which has approximately 10 tablets. Super Chlorinate
One pound of In The Swim Pool Shock will raise free chlorine levels in a clean and balanced pool to 9 ppm, per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Pools with excessive debris, algae, suspended particles or heavy sunlight will need a proportionally higher dose of pool shock, to compensate for such factors. A double or triple dose is often required for poor water conditions such as spring openings, bacteria contamination, or severe algae blooms.

User questions & answers
Question: | how long ship |
Answer: | My only problem with shipping is that you have to be present for delivery. We wound up having to pick it up at our local warehouse for fedex. |
Question: | Can I use this for waste water treatment |
Answer: | I am no chemist, but it does clear up the pool when it turns green. So I suppose that you could, but I really do not know. Best of luck. |
Question: | Does it contain stabilizer, or is it not stabilized |
Answer: | I bought this product because calcium is not supposed to have stabilizer, but after five applications, my CYA reading is increasing. I am not happy. |
Question: | Is it a loose product and if so dose it come with a measuring cup for the required 1lb add |
Answer: | It is granular and comes with a measuring cup. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the cup as I assume it measures volume rather than weight but it could account for that. |
Question: | Can this be used in salt water pools |
Answer: | Yes, i use it in my salt water pool, one bag a week |
Question: | Does this really need to be diluted in water before adding it to your pool or can you just sprinkle directly into pool water (all around of course |
Answer: | I just sprinkle around pool |
Question: | So what's the difference between sodium and calcium hypochlorite ? Is 1pack of this is stronger than a bottle of 12.5pc sodium |
Answer: | Good question: I reviewed several sources and found the answers to be complicated. My opinion is that Granular calcium hypochlorite contains 65 percent of available chlorine. Therefore, if you are currently using sodium hypochlorite (12%), then you can make an equivalent stock solution by mixing 1.5 pounds of granular calcium hypochlorite to each gallon of water in the stock solution tank. Source of information http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=93148 The solid form (Calcium Hypochlorite) seems easier to use which is why I purchase that one. Additionally, the cost per unit of chlorine from the calcium hypochlorite seems to be less expensive. Again, sources of information show differing numbers including the amount of free chlorine released from each unit. It may be a good idea to try each one then test the resultant solution for the amount of available Chlorine. |
Question: | Is this safe for vinyl pools |
Answer: | buy a floating dispensor for 3 inch tabs, buysome tabs. next the important thing,a test kit,a simple 2 test kit will do for what you have.just test chlorine and ph, ph takes a week or so to settle down to a good reading.don't even need to test for first week. after you get some good reading then tell me what they are and I will help you to adjust it. its simple with a pool your size. run filter 6-8 hours a day.most important and don't forget this!!! have fun!!!!! depending on how your ph goes will determind what chlorine to use, there is no straight chlorine,it is all bonded to another element ,which element you want depends on your ph reading. |

Answer: | Thank you for the question. There are two ways to set the time: 1. GPS: Go to Settings > Clock > Set time > GPS > Let watch connect to GPS, preferably outside with minimal nearby obstructions, tall buildings, etc. 2. Manually: Go to Settings > Clock > Set time > Manual > Enter date and time Note that depending on where you live, you may want to activate / deactivate the 'Summer time' (daylight saving) function. If this is set incorrectly and the time is set using GPS, the time may be off by an hour. To fix this, go to Settings > Clock > Summer time > Turn on or off as needed. |

Unfortunately we don’t fully control prices on amazon, but we are happy to refund you the difference, just reach out to us with your order number if you have ordered since the increase. Please know that we are working with Amazon to adjust the price this week back to the normal price. Additionally, please be advised that you might see gradual or sudden price increases in the next few months as the threat of COVID-19 has caused a massive supply chain shortage of raw materials industry wide. User questions & answers
Question: | Every week I have to add acid to my pool to decease the pH. Will these tablets keep the pH from increasing |
Answer: | It is 86% baking soda, which will increase you pH. I would discontinue using a chemical that reduces your pH unless you are trying to raise pH. Pools only need three chemicals: Chlorine, Clorine stabilizer (CYA) NO more then 30ppm, and muriatic acid. Boric acid can be used to stabilize your pH as well, which will raise you pH, but as it is an acid not as much as baking soda will. |
Question: | Can i just drop the tablets in my pool or do i have to use a dispenser? i only have one dispenser that i put the cholorine tabs in. we have an 18x |
Answer: | It's baking soda. It's technically one of the chemicals that is fine to drop in the pool. I would just assist it with a brush maybe. |
Question: | Can you use this with a saltwater system |
Answer: | The directions on the container say "use with your chlorine"... That being said, I don't know if they are compatible/useful in a saltwater system. |
Question: | Is this jut baking soda |
Answer: | The product is mostly baking soda with water clarifier added in. The product does 3 things: increases pH, increases Alkalinity and adds clarifier to your pool water. I use this product with my outdoor pool which holds about 28,000 gallon and have been very happy with it. I add about 1 tablet of this per 4 tablets of 3 inch chlorine tablets that I put into my chlorinator. If you monitor your pool chemistry you could also periodically just add a tablet(s) when your pH and Alkalinity levels get low in your pool. |
