12 best pool water test kits
Pool water test kits are essential tools for pool owners to ensure the water's chemical balance and safety. These kits are designed to measure various parameters of pool water quality, allowing pool owners to maintain clean, clear, and safe swimming conditions. Here's what you need to know about pool water test kits:
Purpose: Pool water test kits are used to monitor and maintain the chemical balance of pool water. They help ensure that the water is safe for swimming by measuring key parameters like pH, chlorine levels, alkalinity, and more.
Types of Test Kits:
- Basic Test Strips: These are simple and affordable test strips that change color to indicate the levels of various parameters. They are easy to use and suitable for routine testing.
- Liquid Test Kits: Liquid test kits often provide more accurate results than test strips. They typically involve adding reagents drop by drop to a water sample and observing color changes.
- Digital Testers: Digital test kits provide precise and easy-to-read digital measurements of water parameters. They are user-friendly and often come with built-in memory to store previous test results.
Parameters Measured:
- pH Level: pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of the water. Maintaining the correct pH level (usually between 7.4 and 7.6) is essential for swimmer comfort and equipment longevity.
- Chlorine Levels: Chlorine kills bacteria and algae in pool water. Test kits measure both free and combined chlorine levels to ensure proper disinfection.
- Total Alkalinity: Alkalinity helps stabilize pH levels. Proper alkalinity (typically between 80 and 120 ppm) prevents rapid pH fluctuations.
- Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer): Cyanuric acid helps protect chlorine from sunlight degradation. It should be within the recommended range.
- Calcium Hardness: This parameter measures the concentration of calcium ions in the water. Proper calcium hardness levels prevent corrosion or scale buildup in pool equipment and surfaces.
Frequency: Regular testing of pool water is crucial. Most pool owners test their water at least once a week, with additional testing after heavy pool use, rain, or chemical treatments.
Adjusting Chemicals: Based on the test results, pool owners can add appropriate chemicals to balance the water. This may include adjusting pH, chlorine, alkalinity, or other chemicals as needed.
Safety: Always follow safety precautions when handling pool chemicals and test kits. Store them out of reach of children and in a cool, dry place.
Maintenance: Keep your test kit components clean and dry to ensure accurate readings. Replace reagents as needed, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper maintenance.
Professional Testing: While pool owners can perform routine testing with home test kits, it's advisable to have a professional water test conducted periodically to check for more advanced parameters and ensure optimal water quality.
In summary, pool water test kits are indispensable tools for pool maintenance. They help pool owners monitor and adjust key water parameters to ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming experience while preserving pool equipment and surfaces.Different types of test kits are available to suit varying needs and preferences.

User questions & answers
| Question: | Can this be used to detect chloride or salt content in a salt water pool |
| Answer: | No this will only detect the levels for a chlorine/ bromine pool water pool. |
| Question: | I have two bottles of your tests strips. One bottle is pool and spa and the other one is spa and hot tub. I’m getting two different readings |
| Answer: | Hi there, the spa and hot tub are calibrated a little differently to work better in warmer water. If you would like to send me a picture of your tested strip I would be happy to see if maybe one of the sets were defective? Looking forward to hearing back from you. Best, Nathan, JNW Support. |
| Question: | Can I use these to test the chlorine in my house water |
| Answer: | I don’t think these test strips are sensitive enough to detect the amount of chlorine typically in tap water. Unless your tap water has really high chlorine content. These strips won’t detect anything under 1ppm. |
| Question: | Alkanity range is incorrect. Should be 80-120 no |
| Answer: | 80-120 is the best range and yes the range shown on the product label is wrong. Most people use these for hot tubs, if you use bromine than even 80 is too low bromine spas should be in the 100-120 range |

User questions & answers
| Question: | Where is color chart for chlorine test |
| Answer: | I have used this product on my Invisalign, the effect is remarkable, as for the others I don’t know, I’m sorry |
| Question: | Does the blue box this comes in actually fit the tall, 2 oz bottles |
| Answer: | It depends on what your jewelry is made of. My platinum and diamond engagment ring and wedding band get nicely cleaned in this., as well as my Tiffany 14K and diamond jewelry. I have quite a lot of Tiffany silver jewelry that can be cleaned in this machine, but in order to remove tarnish you MUST used silver polish. Water with or without detergent won't do anything for tarnish except clean the tarnish itself. Of course you know Tiffany cleans all their jewelry for free. Just take it to any Tiffany store and they will make it look like new. |
| Question: | Does this kit test for: combined chlorine, total dissolved solids, phosphates, and the saturation index? I'm new to chemistry and wasn't able to tell |
| Answer: | Yes it needs to be plugged in to work. It works great cleaning glasses with a drop of dish detergent. It’s totally worth the purchase. |
| Question: | Can you test for cyanuric acid levels |
| Answer: | Thank you for your question! Yes.We sell sprayer including power supply! |

User questions & answers
| Question: | Why does my chlorine/bromine square (1st square) turn blue? That's not on the chart |
| Answer: | Re FCL/Br pad turning blue means you could have a very high level of Chlorine in the water. Usually as it goes up the scale goes from a white color at 0 ppm, to pink to purple them off the scale 10 ppm+ could be a purplish blue color. If you have recently chlorine shocked the water this might be why. As the chlorine/Brominie dissipates this level should return to normal. |
| Question: | Will these give proper reading for alkaline ph of drinking water from a alkaline water machine |
| Answer: | Yes, these strips can be used to test any water. The ideal ranges displayed on our product's results key are intended for swimming pool water, but the readings also provide results as ppm or standard pH scale, so you can still compare the results to your desired levels. |
| Question: | will this work on salt water pool |
| Answer: | This will work but it's my understanding that salt water pools have a much lower chlorine level than chlorinated pools. The 'normal' level indicator shown on the bottle may be incorrect for a salt pool. More information here:http://www.saltwaterpoolandspa.com/salt-water-pool-maintenance.html |
| Question: | does the package state what chemicals to add |
| Answer: | There are several factors to consider when adding products to affect your pool's chemistry. Weather conditions, frequency of use, water features, time of day, and pool surface material all play a role in determining what your ideal chemical levels should be, and the amounts needed to affect a proper change. These test strips are intended as a simple diagnostic to determine your pool's current chemical levels. Please consult a pool calculator, or contact your local pool professional for advice on changing the chemical levels of your pool water. |

User questions & answers
| Question: | Is this test kit also good for salt pools |
| Answer: | If stored in high humidity (e.g., Miami summer weather) in spite of the foil packaging, they will not last a year. But, if kept in an air conditioned room (or even in a freezer), they should last a year or more, although there may be a diminution of potency. The best way to check is to have KNOWN high concentrations of N, P, and K, so that you can see if you get full color development. Freezing a soil sample that analyzed as "high" for all three elements when the chemicals were fresh should work to provide such a check (i.e., "positive control"). |
| Question: | can this be used for salt pools |
| Answer: | Refer this to the manufacturer. |
| Question: | how many CYA tests can you do with this kit |
| Answer: | 50 tests of each of N, P, and K can be performed (measuring in comparison to a color card as "Low, Medium, or High"). BUT there are only enough extraction tablets for 50 extracts. So, the presumption is that you do N, P, and K tests on each extract. If you only want to do N or P, before disposing of extracts, then you'll be limited to 50 tests (the total number of soil extractions that you can perform). |
| Question: | What is the difference between K-2005 and K |
| Answer: | I suspect there is a way to use this for hydroponics but have not found anything to say how. It appears that the commonly used tests for hydroponics are ph and TDS or EC. Note that TDS and EC measurements are two different ways of measuring the same thing so you don't need both. The TDS (total dissolved solids) or EC (electrical conductivity) is a general gage of the quantity of nutrients in the water. The ph is important because if the ph is wrong the plants will not absorb the nutrients. That said amazon does sell inexpensive ph, TDS and EC meters that are easy to use. You should get reference solutions to calibrate these meters. (be careful not to contaminate your reference solutions with your nutrient solutions!) If you are looking to do custom nutrient solutions or replenishment of individual nutrients some of the nutrients can be measured using aquarium test kits but some of those test kits do not have a range that is fitting for hydroponics. I purchased the LaMotte N-P-K soil test kit for soil based gardening but I also do some hydroponics. I have not yet found tests (or a way to use this test kit) to measure the individual hydroponic nutrients. |

User questions & answers
| Question: | how many uses does it last when using 5 drops each time |
| Answer: | Hello MG120, Thank you for inquiring about our Safe Home ULTIMATE Drinking Water Kit, with testing for 200 different contaminants at our EPA-certified lab. In this kit, we do not test for S-(elemental sulfur) nor do we test for H2S-(hydrogen sulfide gas). We do test for Sulfate-(SO4) as one of the 200 different contaminants, in this kit. Thank you for considering Safe Home, for your water testing needs. |
| Question: | How can tests can be ran with this kit |
| Answer: | Hello Doug, Thank you for your interest in our Safe Home ULTIMATE Drinking Water Test Kit, which provides testing for 200 different contaminants at our EPA Certified Laboratory. I am happy to share my 42 years of experience with testing drinking water, with some input. If you want to know what's coming into your home and being treated by your filtering system, test the water before the system. If you want to know what you are drinking, test the water after your filtering system. If you want to know how efficient your water filtering system is, you should purchase two kits: Use one kit to test the water before the filtration system and use the second kit to test the water after the filtration system. Note: this can be pricey...so evaluate accordingly. The math to calculate the percent removal of each contaminant is very simple. I only recommend the third option, because we receive countless emails asking us "how" to check the efficiency of a water treatment (filtering) system. The final decision is ultimately, yours. Thank you again for your interest in our Safe Home ULTIMATE Test Kit. |
| Question: | Does it test Cya levels in the pool |
| Answer: | Hello BG, thank you for your interest in our UKTIMATE drinking water kit with testing for 200 Parameters at our EPA certified laboratory. Unfortunately PFOA and PFOS are not included in this kit. We do have a kit that tests for a dozen perfluoro alkyl substances including PFOA and PFOS. Please feel free to contact us at our toll-free number 888–932–6699 and ask for safe home customer services. Thank you again for your interest in safe home drinking water test kits. |
| Question: | Does it test for cya |
| Answer: | The test is carried out by the lab, where you need to send samples of water by mail. In the box there are only vessels for filling with water, but there are no chemicals for conducting tests at home. There is only one test tube for testing water at home for bacterial contamination. Therefore, the cost of $300 is only for testing one source of water, but for 200 possible polluters. |

User questions & answers
| Question: | How many times each strip can be used |
| Answer: | The answer from DeanP66 is correct; the other three are not. While it's true that the testing tube has a color scale, that's for testing pH, not Chlorine. This test kit makes measuring Chlorine levels very accurate. Is it still pink, or is it clear? Simple. No guessing whether the color is this shade or that shade. As for the pH test (where the color chart IS on the test tube), I have to say I love how easy it is to read. With traditional test strips, I can never tell what shade of orange matches the side of the bottle, but with this kit it's always easy to see. Both the colored water and the color chart are transparent, so you look through both at the same time right next to each other. No guessing. Plus, there's a chart provided in the book that comes with the kit that tells you exactly how much pH increaser or decreaser you'll need to bring things into balance. No more back and forth from adding too much and needing to compensate back the other way. You get it right the first time every time. If you want accurate measurements with no more guesswork, this is a great kit. Plus, you get to pretend you're a doing a science experiment! Of course, if you can't be bothered to spend more than 10 seconds testing your spa, go for test strips instead. |

User questions & answers
| Question: | Will the Taylor reagents work with the LaMotte meter |
| Answer: | Yes, this kit will measure both free chlorine and total chlorine. When performing the chlorine test, the immediate result indicates your free chlorine level. Let the test sample sit for two minutes, allowing the chlorine to fully react - now the sample will indicate total chlorine. In a healthy pool, there should be no change between the two. Any change between the two indicates the presence of combined chlorine. Feel free to contact us at 9800) 854-1492 if you have any additional questions while using our test kit. |
| Question: | How often do the chemicals have to be replaced |
| Answer: | No, it doesn't use test strips because it's not electronic. It uses reagents and you compare the results to the color chart visually. |
| Question: | what is the correct way to check the chlorine in the pool water |
| Answer: | The Taylor K-2006 is far superior. It includes a test for Cyanuric Acid which this kit does not. You need to know your Cyanuric Acid (Cya) to know at what level to keep your chlorine. The K-2006 can also test up to 50 ppm in chlorine, this kit only goes to 5. This kit is pretty basic and if your pool is clean and clear it may be adequate, however if you ever get cloudy or green water this kit won't cut it. |
| Question: | I just received my tester, but don't know what the correct numbers should be. Is there a chart that give the range for what the readings should be? I have a salt water pool |
| Answer: | What do you mean by liquid chemical for test? It comes with 5 bottles to completely analyze your pool water. It is a very nice and thorough test for any pool owner. |
