13 best diy water test kits

Creating your own DIY water test kit can be a useful and cost-effective way to monitor the water quality in your pool, hot tub, or aquarium. Here's a basic guide on how to create a DIY water test kit:

  1. Materials Needed:

    • Test tubes or containers
    • Various chemical reagents (e.g., pH indicator solution, chlorine test reagent)
    • Color comparison chart (to interpret results)
    • Syringes or droppers for precise measurements
    • Clean, clear labels
  2. Determine the Parameters to Test:

    • Decide which water parameters you want to test, such as pH, chlorine levels, alkalinity, hardness, etc.
  3. Prepare Test Solutions:

    • Acquire or prepare chemical solutions for each parameter you want to test. You may find recipes online for creating solutions to test different parameters.
  4. Label the Containers:

    • Label each test tube or container with the parameter it will test (e.g., pH, chlorine).
  5. Collect the Water Samples:

    • Collect water samples from your pool, hot tub, or aquarium to be tested.
  6. Perform the Tests:

    • Add the appropriate reagent or chemical solution to each labeled container following the specific instructions for each parameter.
    • Mix the reagent and water thoroughly.
  7. Compare Colors:

    • Compare the color of the solution in each container to the color comparison chart that corresponds to the parameter being tested. Match the color as closely as possible to determine the concentration or level of that parameter in your water.
  8. Record Results:

    • Record the results of each test in a log or journal for future reference.
  9. Interpret Results:

    • Analyze the results and take appropriate action based on the water parameters' levels. For instance, adjust the chemicals in your pool or aquarium as needed to maintain optimal water quality.
  10. Maintenance:

    • Regularly perform tests and update your DIY water test kit as necessary to ensure accurate and up-to-date readings.

Note: DIY water test kits may have limitations in terms of precision and accuracy compared to commercial water testing kits. Always follow safety precautions when handling chemicals, and ensure proper storage of reagents to maintain their effectiveness. Additionally, it's essential to understand the correct procedures for testing each parameter to obtain reliable results.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a seperate test for each element
Answer: Most of the tests require single test strips. pH, hardness and alkalinity are on a single test strip.
Question: Turned yellow & horrible disgusting smell coming from bottle that was tightly screwed
Answer: Correction! IF you kept the bottle for LONGER than 48 hours it will eventually turn yellow. IF the bottle remained purple up to 48 hours, the water is not contaminated. A yellow color, along with odor IS possible if you keep the jar LONGER than 48 hours. This is caused by the break-down of the nutrients in the jar. It does not indicate coliform if you keep the bottle longer than 48 hours.
Question: Does this test for salmonela? Our well may be fouled after a recent flood
Answer: No. The bacteria test only detects coliform bacteria. Only a lab can test for Salmonella.
Question: Does this test for lead
Answer: No. But this test kit does include a lead test. Here is the Amazon link. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5K7LR3/?tag=jameslaytonco-20

FIND OUT WHAT’S IN YOUR WELL WATER IN MINUTES

You don’t need a science degree or a lab to test your water source with this kit. The included tests are simple enough for anyone to use at home, and most of the results will be ready within a few minutes.

Simply compare the obtained results to the color-coded card to check the levels for the major contaminants.

We’ll also email you a free user guide to help you make sense of the results and work out how to keep your water clean.

COMPREHENSIVE RESULTS FOR 8 WELL WATER PARAMETERS

Test for 8 different contaminants and important water parameters, which are linked to serious illness, plumbing problems (such as pipe corrosion), hardness and limescale buildup, awful tasting, smelling or looking water, and more.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX

  • 1 x Bacteria / Coliform Test
  • 2 x Nitrate & Nitrite
  • 2 x Manganese
  • 2 x Hydrogen Sulfide
  • 2 x 3-Way Test (Total Alkalinity, Total Hardness, pH)

User questions & answers

Question: Is there an additional cost to have the results analyzed
Answer: Hello, Our lab technicians have processed more than 50,000 of these types of tests and also have extensive experience working in accredited Labs. The only way to be 100% sure results are accurate is to send the same set of samples to multiple labs and compare. With any test there are many variables that can alter the outcome such as : collection methods, human error, and etc. This makes it difficult to be 100% sure about any test even if it comes from an accredited lab. After working in a commercial accredited lab I am confidant that our results are as accurate or more accurate than theirs.
Question: Is this kit certified by the american industrial hygiene association
Answer: I just listened to a talk by a functional health-care worker who treats mold related illnesses, Evan Brand. Says he's had hundreds of patients do "plate" tests to test household air that he believes are reliable. (I guess some say plates are not reliable.) These are petri dishes you put out to collect airborne molds. His website sells the ImmunoLytics Mold Test Kits. I found them available on Amazon, and directly from the manufacturer too. Unfortunately there are no reviews and they're pricy ($35/1 plate, around $95/3). This includes analysis. I'm on the fence about these due to the price (and possible effectiveness). Here's the rub... ImmunoLytics appears to do the same thing as the spot tests sold here does, just in a different collection medium. They sell the petri dishes for $3, so the cost is in the analysis. Why it it less than half the cost for the tests here, versus an air sample? The price seems excessive compared to these test strips.
Question: I see here it says lab is unaccredited, how can I be sure the results are accurate
Answer: Hello, I’ve been using Mold Kits for half a year so far. And every time I have prepared and set the test kit, it has given me 100% on each test. Even if you can not see mold it will detect it. Follow instructions when you get it. It will tell you what when how why etc. the test is more of a airborne test. You have the choice to do a swap test also. Product works 100% in my opinion
Question: Would this test help us find out if there is black or harmful mold in our house, not from a specific spot but just in general in the air
Answer: From the time they receive it in the mail,48 hours to have a lab result sent to you via email.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the range for testing iron
Answer: The test range is between 0.0 and 5.0 ppm
Question: can this test spring water
Answer: Hi, I think you should be able to test your Spring water with it. It's not as accruate as a lab test. We used it to test tthhe water and make sure it was ok for our livestock.
Question: What are the indicators/results to suggest the well water is : (1) safe to drink, (2) safe to shower in/wash hands, (3) safe on washing clothes
Answer: We followed all the instructions and test indicators with ease of instructions. I don't remember what all the test were but it covered most of what was the most important of chemicals and bacteria. All the test came back safe for 0 nitrates, bacteria harmful to drink, etc. I would feel safe to shower/wash hands and to wash clothes in. We only used it to drink and wash our hands as it was put up at a lake. I would recommend that water not be stored and changed daily as we left the test water alone for 4 days further than it asked for and it did grow organisms as the chlorine is not there to kill them. However, drinking it fresh daily we never became sick and the water was perfect!! I am going to send a sample off to the state level for curiosity but I feel safe drinking what we draw from the well. I hope this helps.
Question: How many times can I repeat the test? Is it one time use only
Answer: This test kit can only be used once.

The Water Quality Test Even Government and Water Municipalities Recommend You Use. Regularly.

This isn’t just for peace of mind, this is your physical health and well-being. Time and time again, water systems we have come to trust allow polluted water to flow freely into homes causing disease and chronic health problems. Since children and pets are the most sensitive to contaminants, with sometimes devastating results, this can heighten the need for testing. Testing gives you the power of knowledge, and it costs only 24.95.

Environment

Aging water systems, contaminated runoff that introduces human and animal waste, and industrial chemicals are just three of the actors influencing drinking water quality—and the impact is growing greater every day. Chemical spills, toxic substances, people living more densely; the depth of the problem is yet to be fully realized.

Government

These days, most government officials agree that it’s nearly impossible to completely avoid contaminated drinking water. The biggest questions are which chemicals, and to what degree. The fact that both information and management of these systems are controlled by people in politics is a disturbing factor.

Well Water, Too

Rural areas that receive their water from wells contain some of the most contaminated water sources. Microorganisms and toxic chemicals seep into water supplies. People are advised to use a well water testing kit regularly, as new contaminants invade groundwater with little to no oversight or enforcement.

Pittsburgh Downplays the Threat of Lead-Contaminated Drinking Water.

In 2017, the Water and Sewer Authority in Pittsburgh issued a warning for residents to boil their drinking water first, even for brushing teeth and washing dishes. City officials are accused of misleading residents as to the risk.

Flint Michigan’s Drinking Water Harms Children.

In 2018, when 57 of 86 Detroit public schools tested positive for elevated levels of lead, the government confirmed that children could suffer permanent brain damage, which often results in learning disabilities and violent behavior.

Lead-Contamination in Milwaukee’s Drinking Water Since 2015 Continues.

From 2015 to 2017 the children of families living in Milwaukee were testing positive for elevated levels of lead. Even after the health commissioner resigned for failing to notify the community of the risk, the “serious failure” persists.

User questions & answers

Question: what items does this test check for besides lead? Asbestos? cadmium
Answer: Only lead and bacteria
Question: Can I send in the two samples separately
Answer: Thank you for your interest in our Safe Home LEAD in Drinking Water Test Kit. Samples are required to be sent together, in their original packaging, with accompanying registration. However, you may test two totally different locations — even two totally different homes. You can also choose to collect and test two samples from one faucet location, which will provide you with some very useful information about your water supply AND your plumbing fixtures. Thank you again for your interest in our Safe Home LEAD in Drinking Water Test Kit.
Question: Can there be a lengthy time gap between taking the sample and sending it in? I will take sample in the field, but it could be a month+ before sending
Answer: Hello Amazon Buyer, Thank you for your interest in our Safe Home LEAD in Drinking Water Test Kit, with testing at our EPA certified laboratory. Without knowing more details about your sample collection and shipping variables, it's difficult to properly advise you. However, most metals (including Lead) are quite stable in a water matrix, for extended periods of time. Since your water sample will be digested once it arrives at our lab, the test results should be very representative of the true concentration, of Lead. Please collect your water sample as close to the shipping date, as is possible. If you have more detailed questions, you may contact us at our dot.com. Thank you again for your interest in Safe Home Drinking Water Test Kits.

Health Metric

Based on 1 reviews Check latest price
  • ✅ A SIMPLE, ACCURATE AND LOW-COST WAY to screen your water for the presence of potentially harmful contaminants.
  • ✅ MADE IN THE USA IN LINE WITH OFFICIAL EPA LIMITS - Compare your results with EPA-approved guidelines for drinking water quality. Don't rely on Chinese-made "bulk" strip kits, these are often merely wastewater tests with unapproved and unsafe Lead, Iron, and Copper readings.
  • ✅ COMPREHENSIVE TESTING FOR PEACE OF MIND - Not only does this test kit detect even the smallest amounts of Lead and Copper, it also tests for Bacteria and other crucial water quality parameters. Having unbalanced levels of Chlorine, Hardness, pH, Alkalinity, Nitrate or Nitrite can indicate serious issues.
  • ✅ NO SCIENCE DEGREE AND NO MAILING REQUIRED - This home water-testing kit is simple enough for anyone to use with zero expertise or equipment. Get your results quickly and easily - whether it’s from a tap, well, municipal, or spring. Just follow the included step-by-step instructions.
  • ✅ HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS SAVED ON LAB TESTS - Let’s be honest, most of us don’t test every 6 months like recommended. Testing separately for every element at a laboratory would cost stupid amounts of money. This kit makes it possible to find out what’s in your water without breaking the bank.

Question: How many test strips are in the kit

User questions & answers

Question: Does the test vial with your home water in it need to be at a certain temperature during the waiting period
Answer: Same as the others answering this, mine broke. Quality bottle, poor spray nozzle
Question: How many kinds of bacteria can it detect? can it dedect pseudomonas, aeromonas, salmonella, shigella, enterobacter, klebsiella
Answer: They are aluminum and made to use with distilled water and essential oils for room freshners. They are pump sprayers and not made to use with food.
Question: Does this kit include a positive control
Answer: Not really. I recently flew to Mexico and filled each one with either Witch Hazel or Distilled Water. I kept them in sealed ziplocks. There was a little leakage, but not significantly. Probably 5 drops from the bottle at most? They come with pretty solid caps as well. I would add an extra layer of sealant, either clear wrap or zipped plastic bag. Also, not sure if you are aware, but these bottles are not TSA compliant for carry-ons, regardless if it is 3 oz inside. Good thing I asked the attendant before checking in my bag. She said they would have thrown it away had I tried to bring it as carryon. Hope that helps. Have a safe flight!
Question: Mine turned teal well after the 72 hours. It was yellow up until day 4. Is this normal
Answer: The bottles themselves are great but I don't like the sprayers at all. I am pretty sure you could screw another top on.

Question: our test turned positive - does this mean specifically E.Coli is found or general Fecal Coliform
Answer: I haven’t. When you find one, let me know. These bottles are horrible. Mine broke while I was cleaning the shower. I had to clean glass out. Smh. I will never buy these again. Lol.

Coliform Bacteria detection

AquaVial Well Water Test and AquaVial E coli and Coliform Water Test kit both use proprietary dyes used to detect the presence of enzyme specific to coliform bacteria - Beta Galactosidase. The enzyme, when present in large enough quantities ( i.e. produced by a live bacteria)- will change the color of the dye from bright yellow to bright purple.

The test is designed to detect even one bacteria per ml of sample within 48 hours at room temperature ( in 24 hours when incubated at 95 to 105 F in controlled conditions).

The test is ideal as at-home screening test for your well, pool, pond, or lake, to make sure the coliform bacteria is not present.

Total Bacteria and Fungi Detection

AquaVial Total Bacteria is based on a cutting-edge technology developed at the University of Waterloo in Canada. It uses functionalized nano-particles that attach to the outer cell membrane of microorganisms. It is a non-specific, quantitative method that does not require any growth media, and this is what makes the test different. The test is based on a color change produced by a change in aggregation of the nanoparticles in the solution, as they attach to the cell membrane, which leads to a shift in color from pink to purple, and a decrease in color intensity (from colored to clear) that can be seen visually observed, or measured using a colorimeter.

  • Widest detection range of any rapid microbial testing available to consumers
  • Very long shelf life (over 4 years)
  • Wide range of applications, including: testing the effectiveness of water treatment (before and after), drinking water from municipal water supply, well water, pool and hot tub water, cooling towers, and many other.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this test for giardia
Answer: Hello David, Thank you for your interest in our Safe Home DIY Bacteria in Drinking Water Test Kit. This particular kit holds ONE kit to test for Coliform Bacteria. It does not contain any additional testing materials. It's simply not cost effective to do so (no affordable for the consumer). However, each Lot Number of kits produced, are passed through extensive Quality Controls, including numerous Positive and Negative Controls (by USEPA guidelines). Our EPA Certified Laboratory conducts over 50,000 Regulated Bacteria Tests annually and has multiple PhD's on staff who make sure this product does exactly what it is intended to do, for the consumer (under normal conditions of course). If Coliform Bacteria is present down to 1 cfu, it will record a positive result. If zero Coliform Bacteria is present, it will record a negative result. We sell this test kit in seven different countries...I say this to let you know, it is trusted by hundreds-of-thousands of end-users. Thank you again for your interest in our Safe Home DIY Bacteria in Drinking Water Test Kit.
Question: Does work for commercial equipment? Like ice machine and coffee machine
Answer: That is unusual but possible at low incubation temperatures and/or with very low concentrations of bacteria - CFU's (colony forming units). Under most conditions, the Safe Home Bacteria in Drinking Water Test Kit can provide a completed test result as fast as 24 hours (for a positive bacteria test). At low incubation temperatures, the confirmation of a negative test result, can take longer. The Safe Home Bacteria test kit will detect down to 1 CFU (colony forming unit), and is extremely effective, under most conditions. However, DIY test kits are strictly a "screening tool". Our DIY Bacteria Test Kit is used for such testing in more than a dozen countries, around the world. Since at home testing cannot cover all of the possible variables, I would recommend re-testing with another Safe Home DIY Bacteria Test. You can also choose to purchase bacteria confirmation testing, by sending your next water sample directly to a certified laboratory. We actually have a lab tested bacteria confirmation test available at our EnviroTestKits website (under Safe Home Pro Bacteria). This allows you to purchase the kit and ship your water sample directly to our EPA certified lab. The "in lab test" has total control over possible background interference or environmental variables. Drop us a line at our website and we will be happy to assist you. We are here to make a difference in people's lives, through science. Thank you for choosing Safe Home Drinking Water Test Kits.
