14 best home water tests
Home water testing involves the use of various products and tools to assess the quality of water in your home, whether it's for drinking, swimming, or other purposes. These tests can help you determine the presence of contaminants and ensure that your water is safe. Here's what you need to know about home water tests:
Test Strips: Test strips are a common and straightforward method for testing water quality. They are typically used to check parameters like pH, chlorine, hardness, and the presence of specific contaminants. To use them, you dip the strip into the water, and it changes color to indicate the levels of the tested parameters.
Chemical Test Kits: Chemical test kits come with reagents and detailed instructions to test specific water parameters. They are available for various applications, including drinking water, pool and spa water, and aquariums. Common tests include pH, chlorine, bacteria, and heavy metals.
Electronic Testers: Electronic water testers are more advanced and provide digital readouts of water parameters. They can be more accurate and user-friendly than test strips or chemical kits. Some electronic testers are specifically designed for measuring parameters like TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) or EC (Electrical Conductivity).
Bacteria and Pathogen Tests: These tests are crucial for assessing the microbiological safety of drinking water. They can detect the presence of harmful bacteria like E. coli and other pathogens. Some tests use culture plates, while others use DNA-based methods.
Lead Testing: Lead testing kits are essential for checking for the presence of lead in drinking water, which can be harmful, especially in older homes with lead pipes or fixtures. These kits typically involve collecting a water sample and sending it to a laboratory for analysis.
Pool and Spa Water Testing: Pool and spa owners use water test kits to monitor parameters like pH, chlorine, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Maintaining proper water chemistry is vital for the safety and comfort of swimmers and the longevity of pool equipment.
DIY vs. Laboratory Testing: Some home water tests can be conducted by homeowners themselves, while others may require sending samples to a professional laboratory for more comprehensive analysis. Laboratory tests are often necessary for detailed assessments of water quality.
Interpreting Results: Once you've conducted the tests, it's important to understand and interpret the results. Compare the results to recommended guidelines or acceptable levels to determine whether your water meets safety standards.
Regular Testing: Regular water testing is essential, especially for drinking water sources and pool maintenance. It helps ensure that your water remains safe and within the desired parameters.
Water Treatment: Depending on the test results, you may need to take corrective actions such as water treatment or filtration to improve water quality and safety.
Local Regulations: Be aware of local regulations regarding water testing and quality standards. Some areas may have specific requirements for water testing and treatment.
In summary, home water tests are essential tools for assessing the quality and safety of your water supply, whether for drinking, swimming, or other uses. Using the appropriate testing products and methods, you can monitor water parameters, identify potential issues, and take steps to ensure that your water is safe and suitable for its intended purpose.
Below you can find our editor's choice of the best home water tests on the market- ✅ A SIMPLE, ACCURATE AND LOW-COST WAY to screen your water for the presence of potentially harmful contaminants.
- ✅ MADE IN THE USA IN LINE WITH OFFICIAL EPA LIMITS - Compare your results with EPA-approved guidelines for drinking water quality. Don't rely on Chinese-made "bulk" strip kits, these are often merely wastewater tests with unapproved and unsafe Lead, Iron, and Copper readings.
- ✅ COMPREHENSIVE TESTING FOR PEACE OF MIND - Not only does this test kit detect even the smallest amounts of Lead and Copper, it also tests for Bacteria and other crucial water quality parameters. Having unbalanced levels of Chlorine, Hardness, pH, Alkalinity, Nitrate or Nitrite can indicate serious issues.
- ✅ NO SCIENCE DEGREE AND NO MAILING REQUIRED - This home water-testing kit is simple enough for anyone to use with zero expertise or equipment. Get your results quickly and easily - whether it’s from a tap, well, municipal, or spring. Just follow the included step-by-step instructions.
- ✅ HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS SAVED ON LAB TESTS - Let’s be honest, most of us don’t test every 6 months like recommended. Testing separately for every element at a laboratory would cost stupid amounts of money. This kit makes it possible to find out what’s in your water without breaking the bank.

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the range for testing iron |
Answer: | The test range is between 0.0 and 5.0 ppm |
Question: | can this test spring water |
Answer: | Hi, I think you should be able to test your Spring water with it. It's not as accruate as a lab test. We used it to test tthhe water and make sure it was ok for our livestock. |
Question: | What are the indicators/results to suggest the well water is : (1) safe to drink, (2) safe to shower in/wash hands, (3) safe on washing clothes |
Answer: | We followed all the instructions and test indicators with ease of instructions. I don't remember what all the test were but it covered most of what was the most important of chemicals and bacteria. All the test came back safe for 0 nitrates, bacteria harmful to drink, etc. I would feel safe to shower/wash hands and to wash clothes in. We only used it to drink and wash our hands as it was put up at a lake. I would recommend that water not be stored and changed daily as we left the test water alone for 4 days further than it asked for and it did grow organisms as the chlorine is not there to kill them. However, drinking it fresh daily we never became sick and the water was perfect!! I am going to send a sample off to the state level for curiosity but I feel safe drinking what we draw from the well. I hope this helps. |
Question: | How many times can I repeat the test? Is it one time use only |
Answer: | This test kit can only be used once. |

The Water Quality Test Even Government and Water Municipalities Recommend You Use. Regularly.
This isn’t just for peace of mind, this is your physical health and well-being. Time and time again, water systems we have come to trust allow polluted water to flow freely into homes causing disease and chronic health problems. Since children and pets are the most sensitive to contaminants, with sometimes devastating results, this can heighten the need for testing. Testing gives you the power of knowledge, and it costs only 24.95.
Environment
Aging water systems, contaminated runoff that introduces human and animal waste, and industrial chemicals are just three of the actors influencing drinking water quality—and the impact is growing greater every day. Chemical spills, toxic substances, people living more densely; the depth of the problem is yet to be fully realized.
Government
These days, most government officials agree that it’s nearly impossible to completely avoid contaminated drinking water. The biggest questions are which chemicals, and to what degree. The fact that both information and management of these systems are controlled by people in politics is a disturbing factor.
Well Water, Too
Rural areas that receive their water from wells contain some of the most contaminated water sources. Microorganisms and toxic chemicals seep into water supplies. People are advised to use a well water testing kit regularly, as new contaminants invade groundwater with little to no oversight or enforcement.
Pittsburgh Downplays the Threat of Lead-Contaminated Drinking Water.
In 2017, the Water and Sewer Authority in Pittsburgh issued a warning for residents to boil their drinking water first, even for brushing teeth and washing dishes. City officials are accused of misleading residents as to the risk.
Flint Michigan’s Drinking Water Harms Children.
In 2018, when 57 of 86 Detroit public schools tested positive for elevated levels of lead, the government confirmed that children could suffer permanent brain damage, which often results in learning disabilities and violent behavior.
Lead-Contamination in Milwaukee’s Drinking Water Since 2015 Continues.
From 2015 to 2017 the children of families living in Milwaukee were testing positive for elevated levels of lead. Even after the health commissioner resigned for failing to notify the community of the risk, the “serious failure” persists.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the range of the lead test kit |
Answer: | The lead test kit is a pass/fail type of test. The U.S EPA has a set a 15 part per billion (ppb) limit for municipal water providers. This test shows if the lead level in the water is above or below the 15 ppb level. |
Question: | What level of lead in water is safe |
Answer: | The EPA set a threshold level of 15 parts per billion (ppb) for municipal water treatment companies. If 10% of the water samples contain over 15 ppb, the treatment company has to take action to remove the lead. No lead is considered safe to consume. The problem is lead can enter the water system at your home through pipes, solder and fixtures. There are no regulations for controlling lead on your private property. |
Question: | What are signs of lead in water |
Answer: | There are no visible signs or odors when lead is in the water. The only way to know is to test the water. |
Question: | What's the lowest ppm amount that each test can detect |
Answer: | Iron = 0.3ppm, Mercury = 0.002 ppm, Copper, 0.05 ppm, Lead is a yes/no test. If the lead is over 15 ppb, it reads positive. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a seperate test for each element |
Answer: | Most of the tests require single test strips. pH, hardness and alkalinity are on a single test strip. |
Question: | Turned yellow & horrible disgusting smell coming from bottle that was tightly screwed |
Answer: | Correction! IF you kept the bottle for LONGER than 48 hours it will eventually turn yellow. IF the bottle remained purple up to 48 hours, the water is not contaminated. A yellow color, along with odor IS possible if you keep the jar LONGER than 48 hours. This is caused by the break-down of the nutrients in the jar. It does not indicate coliform if you keep the bottle longer than 48 hours. |
Question: | Does this test for salmonela? Our well may be fouled after a recent flood |
Answer: | No. The bacteria test only detects coliform bacteria. Only a lab can test for Salmonella. |
Question: | Does this test for lead |
Answer: | No. But this test kit does include a lead test. Here is the Amazon link. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5K7LR3/?tag=jameslaytonco-20 |

Question: | Does this test for fluoride |
Answer: | Your city or county's water authority will tell you whether or not they fluoridate your water. Check their website for their annual water quality report. That being said, enough places have been adding fluoride to their water supplies for long enough that it is in practically all water by now. It doesn't go away, it has been building up in increasing levels for decades. They water crops with it, prepare foods with it, it is everywhere. |
Question: | I lost the reports page to compare my results, is there a copy online somewhere |
Answer: | Below are the ranges posted on the test results card the comes with the water test kit.Lead - Under 15 ppbBacteria - NoneCopper - Under 1.3 ppbIron - Under .3 ppbNitrate Nitrogen - Under 10 ppmNitrite Nitrogen - Under 1 ppmpH - 6.5 to 8.5Hardness - Under 50 ppmTotal Chlorine - Under 4 ppm |
Question: | Are the results binary (yes/no, +/-) or do you get numbers back |
Answer: | For the following tests you'll get numbers back: Iron, Nitrates, Nitrites, Chlorine, Copper, Alkalinity, pH, HardnessFor these tests it will be a binary positive or negative result: Pesticide, Lead, Bacteria |
Question: | If I want to test water from multiple sources (kitchen, bathroom, fridge), will I need multiple kits |
Answer: | Hey, this is the future. So did you have to resort to a different product, or bought multiple kits? Also, test your drinking water, everything else is secondary |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have to mail in something to get the results |
Answer: | The kit contains everything needed to perform the tests at home. |
Question: | Can this be used to detect bacteria in beverages other than water? Like milk or beer |
Answer: | This test method is designed for water. Beer will be acidic and throw off the test. Milk will rot in the jar. |
Question: | What is the shelf-life of this kit |
Answer: | Three years. The expiration date is on the lid. |
Question: | How does this bacteria test work |
Answer: | The bottle contains a special nutrient blend. When a water sample if added, the nutrients dissolve, turning the water purple/magenta. If coliform bacteria are in the water, they’ll consume the nutrients. When this happens, the water in the bottle turns bright yellow within 48 hours of starting the test. |

FIND OUT IF YOUR WATER IS COLIFORM BACTERIA-FREE
This test is ideal for screening your well water, for anyone moving into a new house, or if you have any suspicions about your current drinking water. The EPA tests public water sources regularly to make sure no coliform is present, but you won’t know about your private source until you test it.
Instead of calling out the health department, or sending off to a professional lab, this test can be carried out by anyone with ease. No science degree or lab coat required!
CRYSTAL CLEAR RESULTS IN 48 HOURS
Just pour some of your water into the jar, shake for 20 seconds, then leave at room temperature for 48 hours. If there’s bacteria in your water, it will eat up the nutrients in the jar, turning the water a bright yellow color.
Although it’s not possible to test for E. coli separately, this test will still show you if it’s present. A positive test result means your water contains any coliform bacteria, which may include E. coli.
EPA QUALITY ASSURED FROM THE USA
Every test kit sold is produced in the USA to the strictest quality guidelines. These are the same official guidelines used by the EPA to test public water sources all across the country.
This means you get reliable results and safe water standards without having to constantly rely on anyone for help. You can then test regularly without having to worry about racking up any lab fees or annoying health department visits.

User questions & answers
Question: | Why didn’t I get directions |
Answer: | The directions are on the side of the bottle. The only additional paper that came with my shipment was a page of EPA Maximum Contaminant levels and the note that you could refer to www.epa.gov for more details. You can contact Baldwin Meadows at [email protected]. However, I didn't need directions since these operate like the old litmus test strips from chemistry classes. Just dip in water for 1 second, remove immediately and hold horizontally for 30 seconds without touching/removing water, and line up with the colors printed on the outside of the bottle. The PH and Total Alkalinity tabs have colors that will let you line the correct end of the strip up with the color template. |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | They very carefully NEVER tell you where these are made or how to contact them other than through Internet. You can go to this website and try to figure it out for yourself, but I suspect it is a large company from outside United States that wants to appear to be a local Mom and Pop operation. https://baldwin-meadows.com/2017/11/27/welcome-to-baldwin-meadows/ |
Question: | My daughter is doing a Science Fair project on filtering pond water to make it safe to drink. Would this test work for the before and after testing |
Answer: | Hi, Thank you for considering our test kit for your daughter’s science fair project. Our test kits are used in classrooms across the country to detect contaminants from different water sources. This should work for the project. The one thing that I would caution you about is that the results are only accurate directly after the test strips are dipped into water. The color on the strips deteriorates as they dry out. Therefore, you may want to take pictures of the results and post them rather than showing the actual test strips unless the experiment is being done live. If you have further questions please feel free to contact us at [email protected]. |
Question: | What's the expiration date on the box? Is there a use by date for after you break the seal on the bottle? (like 30 days |
Answer: | Thanksgiving your question. The expiration date on this particular lot is January 2020 (2 year shelf life). They will stay fresh for the full 2 years as long as the bottle is sealed after use. |
