10 best natural chemistry stains
Natural chemistry stains, in the context of pool maintenance and water treatment, refer to the formation of stains on the surfaces of swimming pools and other water features due to the presence of minerals and organic matter in the water. These stains can be unsightly and may negatively impact the appearance of the pool. To address these stains, pool owners often use specialized products known as pool stain removers or pool stain treatments. Here's what you should know:
Causes of Pool Stains: Pool stains can be caused by various factors, including:
Minerals: High levels of minerals like iron, copper, and manganese in the water can lead to metal staining on pool surfaces.
Organic Matter: Leaves, algae, and other organic debris that enter the pool can create stains if left untreated.
Improper pH and Water Balance: Incorrect pH levels, alkalinity, or calcium hardness can contribute to staining.
Chlorine or Chemical Imbalance: High chlorine levels or imbalances in pool chemicals can also lead to staining.
Natural Chemistry Stain Removers: Natural chemistry stain removers are pool chemicals specifically formulated to treat and prevent stains on pool surfaces. These products often contain chelating agents, sequestering agents, and stain-fighting compounds. Chelating agents bind to metals in the water, preventing them from causing stains, while sequestering agents keep minerals in solution so they don't deposit as stains.
Types of Stains: Stains in pools can be categorized into different types based on their causes:
Metal Stains: These are typically caused by iron, copper, or manganese in the water. Metal sequestering agents can help prevent and treat these stains.
Organic Stains: Stains caused by organic matter like leaves and algae can be treated with pool shock treatments and algaecides.
Calcium Scale Stains: These stains result from calcium buildup on pool surfaces due to improper water balance. Balancing calcium hardness levels can help prevent them.
Application: Natural chemistry stain removers are usually added directly to the pool water. The product's instructions should be followed carefully for effective treatment.
Prevention: Regular maintenance of pool water chemistry, including monitoring pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels, can help prevent stains. Additionally, using a pool cover to keep debris out of the pool can reduce the likelihood of organic stains.
Professional Assistance: In severe cases or if you are unsure about the type of stain, it may be advisable to seek the assistance of a professional pool maintenance service or water testing expert to diagnose and treat the issue effectively.
Natural chemistry stain removers are a valuable tool in maintaining the appearance and longevity of a pool. However, it's essential to use them as directed and to address the underlying causes of stains to ensure a clean and clear pool environment.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this clean toilets |
Answer: | I don't know. My toilets have never gotten that dirty. But it might. It takes off stains from a swimming pool that won't come off with a scrub brush. So I guess it's worth a try. However, a cheaper method is just use a Mr. Clean magic eraser. Put some rubber gloves on and start scrubbing away. Those things work magic. |
Question: | Will it work if metalfree was used first |
Answer: | I think so. I had used a metal remover from my local pool store that was supposed to get rid of the stains. It didn't so I ordered this. It took about 4 days but my pool looks brand new! |
Question: | Used 2 bottles of x strength on indoor plaster pool. not doing much. should i try the citric reg strength? is it ok to mix them |
Answer: | You didn't specify what you are trying to do. This product is for removing metal stains - mostly brown iron rust stains. If all you are doing is dumping it into the pool then it will slowly reduce the stains over the next year. |
Question: | After (8yrs), bottom & step surfaces have taken on a dull appearance. Assume staining from various reasons. Would stain free help? 10k pool |
Answer: | This works great. You can literally see the stain coming off as you pour it down the walls of the pool |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this make the pool water cloudy |
Answer: | Contrary to other answers, this did make my pool water cloudy. In a 18k gallon pool, I used the entire container at once, focusing on the outside walls where stains were, then the middle of the pool where a larger stain was. Over 2 days, the pool got increasingly cloudy. During days 3-4, a clarifier was added to clear up the cloudiness which worked over a few days. This also caused pressure to build in the filter, so this was followed by back-washing the filter, recharging with DE and finally adding shock and re-balancing with other chemicals 7 days after initially adding Stain Free. |
Question: | what' good to use to remove green from the wall of the pool |
Answer: | This will remove green caused by metal staining from the wall of a pool. If you have algae green, you need chlorine. |
Question: | Is this stain that covers the entire vinyl liner and stairs due to high stabilizer? Used it twice before, but this time stain came right back |
Answer: | If your stain came back it's because you added chlorine too quickly after using it the stain remover. You have to wait 7-10 days before chlorinating. That is while pool companies suggest doing stain removal during the winter months - the bacterial growth is much slower during cold weather, making it less likely that your pool will turn green during those 7-10 days. (This is what my pool people told me when I used this stain remover. I have a chlorinated pool, not saltwater). |
Question: | After using how long to you have to wait before using pool |
Answer: | Just a few hours. It dissolves quickly but you want it to penatrate the stains. You should vaccuum the pool before you disturb the water by swimming to pick up the residue the product creates. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which is better citric or asorbic acid |
Answer: | I wouldn't say either is categorically "better". In my gunite (plaster) pool, I started by using citric. I eventually switched to ascorbic, and I now prefer it. I think ascorbic is a bit stronger of an acid, but I'm not sure on that. The KEY is learning HOW to use either one. Water chemistry is critical -- lowering chlorine, balanced chemicals, etc... using sequestering agent(s), and then raising the chlorine without destroying the cleansing effect. You have to follow the right procedure regardless of which acid you use. |
Question: | can this be used in a saltwater pool with vinyl liner |
Answer: | Yes. My pool is salt water with vinyl liner and it worked perfectly!! |
Question: | Does this product work on gunite pools |
Answer: | yes, you can use this in gunite pools. I highly suggest researching proper use, specifically on Natural Chemistry web site. Also several YouTube videos (on this and similar products). Balancing and re-balancing the pool chemistry is critical to successful usage. |
Question: | is it good for Diamond Brite |
Answer: | Diamond Brite is just your brand of gunite/plaster, right? You can use this on gunite/plaster pools. Ask your pool installer/professional to verify before use. Go to Natural Chemisty web site for additional information. Be sure to follow the proper procedures for monitoring/changing pool chemistry before, during and after use. |

Question: | can you use this with Jacks magic the purple stuff |
Answer: | I don't know why you couldn't. If you are removing stains, I would use Metal Free the night before and set the pump to recirculate overnight. Then, use Jack's magic the next day. It's been a long time since I used Jack's magic because I have found the Stain Free products work very well in conjunction with Metal Free. Of course, chlorine has to be almost zero when using Stain Free. Not sure about Jack's magic. |
