14 best winterizing pool chemicals
Winterizing pool chemicals is an essential part of preparing your swimming pool for the colder months when the pool won't be in use. Properly winterizing your pool helps protect it from damage, prevents algae growth, and makes it easier to reopen in the spring. Here are some key points to know about winterizing pool chemicals:
Balancing Water Chemistry: Before adding any winterizing chemicals, it's crucial to balance the water chemistry. You should ensure that the pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels are within the recommended range. This helps prevent corrosion or scale buildup during the winter months.
Shock Treatment: A shock treatment with chlorine or a non-chlorine shock is typically recommended to kill any remaining algae or bacteria in the water. This step ensures that the pool starts the winter season with clean water.
Algaecide: Adding a winter algaecide is essential to prevent algae growth in your pool during the winter.Algaecides are specially formulated to inhibit the growth of algae even in cold water temperatures.
Antifreeze for Pipes: In areas with freezing temperatures, it's crucial to protect your pool's plumbing system from damage caused by freezing water. You can use pool antifreeze (not the same as automotive antifreeze) to protect pipes, valves, and other equipment. Be sure to follow manufacturer instructions for proper usage.
Winterizing Kits: Many pool supply stores offer winterizing kits that contain all the necessary chemicals and instructions for winterizing your pool. These kits often include shock treatment, algaecide, and pool antifreeze.
Pool Cover: A sturdy pool cover is an essential part of winterizing your pool. It helps keep debris out and reduces evaporation. Make sure the cover is securely in place to prevent leaves, dirt, and other debris from entering the water.
Regular Maintenance: Even during the winter months, it's essential to periodically check your pool's water chemistry and make any necessary adjustments. This ensures that the pool remains properly balanced and prevents potential problems when you reopen it in the spring.
Safety Precautions: When handling pool chemicals, always follow safety precautions outlined on the product labels. Store chemicals in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children and pets.
Consulting a Professional: If you're unsure about the winterization process or have a complex pool setup, it's a good idea to consult a professional pool service technician for guidance and assistance.
Properly winterizing your pool with the appropriate pool chemicals helps protect your investment and ensures that your pool will be clean and safe to use when warmer weather returns. It's important to start the winterization process well before freezing temperatures set in to prevent damage to your pool equipment and plumbing.

User questions & answers
Question: | The winter pill did not come with a pin or instructions. i saw others say the same thing but what worked to puncture it? so annoying |
Answer: | You must use a winterizing kit. This thing will not winterize your pool because it has no chlorine and no algaecide in it. A water clarifier only works if you have the filter running. And there is no way that a few enzymes can kill organic material like chlorine and algaecide. |
Question: | Can you use this without a pool cover |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | I live in northern new york, we have harsh and long winters with temps reaching -30 f, will this pill work in my climate |
Answer: | Yes, just be sure to either predilute the granules using a 5gal bucket or sweep them around from sitting at the bottom, on the liner. They have a kit for up to 25k gallons I believe, not that a 30k kit would harm it, just be sure to circulate the system for complete water turnover. |
Question: | Do you use this product in addition to regular winterization of your pool or is it used as a replacement for winterizing chemicals |
Answer: | If you read my review, you will see the winter cover with mesh panels in the photos. Works fine. |
- For use with pools up to 35,000 gallons only
- Kits use chlorine-free chemicals that will not stain or bleach liners and is safe for use on all pool surfaces

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on salt water pools |
Answer: | Drain the water off of the cover, remove cover. Reconnect filter. Add shock and adjust PH as required...let the filter run for an extended period of time...vac and skim as required. Take a sample of your water to a local pool supply store...they will usually test it for free. Once the water tests OK...jump in, crack open a beer and enjoy...good luck. |
Question: | Is this kit safe to use on a vinyl lined 21k gal inground pool? Im worried about staining the liner |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Can this kit be used with a mesh cover |
Answer: | Go to manufactor. |
Question: | What do you do to your pool once winter is over |
Answer: | We bought them off amazon, just search iSUP fin and make sure it’s the clip in. Look at the picture and your fin to confirm it’s the same. |

In The Swim Pool Winterizing and Closing Chemical Kit
Winter Stain-Away: Specific formula made for winter pool closings. It is able to prevent staining from metals and minerals. It also helps prevent scale formation that is often found around the waterline.
Winterizer Algaecide: Designed to work with all the other items in each Winterizing and Closing Chemical Kit. Winterizer has a proprietary polymer blend providing superior protection against algae. Long lasting formula will ensure it will last all winter.
Chlorine-Free Pool Shock: Safe to use on all surfaces and will not damage your pool cover. With its ability to oxidize the water, this will help with eliminating contaminants. It also will not reduce the effectiveness of other chemicals used in winter closing.
Time-Release Winter Pool Floater: Dispenses a set amount of non-chlorine chemical for your pool months after its been covered. It's key in removing carbon dioxide from the water eliminating a primary food source for algae. Simply poke the holes on the floater until you reach your pool’s volume of water or gallons specified on it.
Winter Sorb: Patented non-toxic molecular foam that can absorb up to 40 times its own weight. It will soak up residual lotions, oils, and scum preventing clogging of the pool’s plumbing. Its ability to attract grime and oils allows you to toss it in the pool which will give you an even area of coverage.
Clean and Balance
The first step in pool closing is to clean and balance the water as this will set you up for a more successful close. Make sure to skim, brush, and vacuum the pool to get rid of debris and other sediment that may have built up. Then once the pool is clean, test the water and balance all the levels so that they are within their desired ranges. Add the appropriate amount of chemicals to bring all your levels into balance.
Shock & Algaecide
Shock the pool one more time with a quick dissolving chlorinating granular (Dichlor) to help sanitize the water. Then add In The Swim Algaecide for preventative maintenance of algae growth. Use the recommended dose of shock and algaecide according to the label instructions. As you add these, have your pool filter pump in operation so the water is in circulation. Complete this process a few days before you begin to winterize and close your pool.
Adjusting and Balancing
To help simplify and save you time in winterizing and closing your pool, we recommend using one of our kits. We offer many options and they come with everything you need to treat up to the specified gallons your pool has. Using one of our kits will give you peace of mind knowing that come springtime, opening your pool will be a breeze.
Lower Water Level and Clean Filter
Lower the water level in the pool to around 4-6 inches below the skimmer. Clean your filter to get rid of all leftover debris so you will start with a fresh filter when you next open the pool. We recommend taking all your above-ground pool filter equipment indoors for the winter. This will help prevent possible damage and cracking from freezing water. For in-ground pools, the lines and plumbing need to be drained, plugged and filled with antifreeze. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for protecting your underground pool lines.
Drain and Plug Lines
This step is only required for in-ground pools. First you will want to close the valves and then drain or blow out the lines. Once completed, plug the line with a winterizing plug that is appropriate for your use. Proceed to fill the line to the skimmer with pool antifreeze. When you open your pool in the spring, you can vacuum the pool antifreeze or drain into the pool since it is non-toxic. Place a skimmer guard into the skimmer to help prevent ice damage that acts as an ice compensator.
Cover the Pool
The final step in pool closing is to cover your pool to complete the winterizing process. Take your time in the last step to install the correct type of cover for your pool. There are different types of covers such as winter covers and safety covers. Each have their own features and benefits so be sure to research which one would work best for you.

Answer: | Live in Maine above ground with a deep end 16x32 usually winterize around 1st of October. I keep it balanced until then. After winterizing I don't cover it all winter ... freezes pretty much solid.... when it melts in April water is Crystal clear. As far as temperature before winterizing I don't dare to do it too early so it doesn't turn green before it gets cold enough to freeze... probably 55 or 60 when I do. Hope this helps |
Question: | Can this be used with a saltwater pool |
Answer: | Shake the pill real well. Use a push pin to put holes into the depressions and throw into the pool just as you are ready to cover. The enzymes will disperse over the winter. |
Question: | Anyone used this before with an ingrd pool? do u use any other chems in addition to kit like stain& scale,poolperfect/phosfree, float chl dispenser |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work for an above ground pool in place of a winter ball |
Answer: | Can not tell you if this can be use in Salt water . BUT DO NOT BUY! This was the worst kit we ever used. turned the pool into pea soup. We had to drain the whole pool. |
Question: | I’m looking for a slimmer plug that protects the skimmer from ice |
Answer: | We bought this cover awhile ago but if I remember correctly there is a wire type rope with a wench that you thread through loops on the cover, then wench it until it's on there snuggly. I've never seen an above ground pull cover with elastic around it. Not a bad idea. |
Question: | can you use it in warmer climates |
Answer: | I put this on my 18X33 pool. This model is way too big for that. It would technically cover it, but it would be a lot of wasted material and you wou would have to anchor it differently. I'd look for a size closer to the 9X18. |
Question: | Can you use it in salt water pool |
Answer: | I would think so. I use it in conjunction with a solar cover. This is the first year I've had it and love that I haven't had to vacuum a ton of leaves. Matter of fact, I've only had to vacuum once this whole season |
