12 best super pool shocks
Super pool shocks are a type of chemical product commonly used in pool maintenance and water treatment. They are designed to effectively sanitize and clean pool water by rapidly increasing the chlorine levels and eliminating various contaminants. Here are some key points about super pool shocks:
Chlorine Boost: Super pool shocks typically contain a high concentration of chlorine or other oxidizing agents. When added to the pool water, they provide a rapid and significant increase in the chlorine levels. This helps to kill bacteria, algae, and other microorganisms that can make pool water unsafe or unsightly.
Shock Treatment: Super pool shocks are often used for shock treatment, which involves adding a large dose of chlorine to the pool water to quickly eliminate contaminants and restore water quality. This is typically done when the pool water becomes cloudy, has a strong chlorine odor, or after heavy pool usage.
Algae Control: These products are effective in controlling and preventing algae growth in swimming pools.Algae can make pool water green and unsightly, and super pool shocks can help prevent and treat this issue.
Contaminant Removal: Super pool shocks can also help remove contaminants like organic matter, body oils, and other impurities that may accumulate in pool water. This helps maintain clear and sanitary water for swimmers.
Regular Maintenance: Pool owners typically use super pool shocks as part of their regular pool maintenance routine, in addition to regular chlorine or bromine sanitizers. The frequency of shock treatments depends on pool usage, weather conditions, and water quality.
Application: Super pool shocks are available in various forms, including granules, powders, or liquid. The specific product and application method may vary, so it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper use.
Safety Precautions: Handling and storing super pool shocks require caution. They should be kept out of reach of children and stored in a cool, dry place away from other chemicals. Additionally, users should follow safety guidelines, such as wearing protective gear when handling the product.
Water Testing: Regular water testing is essential when using super pool shocks to ensure the water chemistry remains balanced. This helps prevent over-chlorination and maintains safe swimming conditions.
Overall, super pool shocks are a valuable tool in pool maintenance, helping to keep pool water clean, clear, and safe for swimmers by effectively sanitizing the water and controlling various contaminants, including algae and bacteria.

Product description
Swimming pool shock treatments are an essential aspect of spring pool opening but should also be used to give your pool a quick chlorine boost. Super Shock is the most popular and versatile pool shock treatment available that is used to kill algae and bacteria and remove micro-contaminants that make pool water cloudy. Use Super Shock to kill visible algae blooms and invisible bacteria, which could cause illness to swimmers. Your daily chlorination of the pool will kill most pathogenic bacteria, viruses and microbes, however to be sure that the water is sanitary, it is good practice to 'shock the pool', or super-chlorinate the pool every week. Shocking your pool eliminates any contaminants in the water, especially the invisible germs that may be harboring in the water. It is also smart to "Oxidize" your pool water on a weekly basis with Oxidizing shock. "Oxidizing" your pool water on a weekly basis burns off "chloramines" - or spent chlorine cells - allowing the newly introduced chlorine to work at 100% efficiency. It also eliminates all of the contaminants that your chlorine and chlorine based shock have killed in the pool water - helping ensure a safe, clear pool!
- Main active ingredient is 68% Calcium Hypochlorite (Cal-Hypo)
- Powerful chlorine shock treatment that is great for regular maintenance
- Quickly eliminates algae, bacteria, and other harmful contaminants from your pool water
- 65% Available Chlorine
- Dosage: 1 Pound per 10,000 gallons
User questions & answers
Question: | Where are the shocks made |
Answer: | Usually (concentrated) chlorine but the ingredients should be listed. It's a federal law to list the ingredients, etc. |
Question: | Is it compatible with a saltwater pool |
Answer: | Yes. A saltwater pool still needs to be chlorinated weekly. |
Question: | What's the percentage of the active ingredient? (the hypochlorite.) That's a basic piece of information that I don't find in the description |
Answer: | The active ingredient list reads like this:Calcium Hypochlorite:............68%OTHER INGREDIENTS............32%TOTAL................................100%Minimum Available Chlorine....65%Hopes this helps! |
Question: | What is the shelf life of this product |
Answer: | all pool shocks shelf life is normally one hear; then slowly their strength decreases. at what rate, dont know. however, i never had any issues using 2-3 year old shock. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this Chlorine stabilized or unstabilized |
Answer: | No! |
Question: | Can this be used in a saltwater pool |
Answer: | I have a saltwater pool and last year learned that using this type of shock in saltwater creates calcium crystals to form. (White flakes floating around) Use liquid chlorine in your saltwater pool. |
Question: | How long do you have to wait to swim after shocking |
Answer: | Not just a couple minutes with any chlorine shock. That is false! Both Chlorine Free Shock and Lithium Hypo Shock are fine like play sand and dissolve almost instantly. For that reason you can swim after only a few minutes after shocking with a non chlorine shock. Using Chlorine shocks require a waiting period for swimming of 4-8hrs. If you read the package I beleive it says to add to the deepest part of your pool, at night, with your pool pump running (pre disolve in water for vinyl pools) or something to that affect. Personally, I shock once per week at night. If it happens that I need to shock before the kids want to swim then I typically wait a minimum or 1-2hrs before letting them get in. As a general rule of thumb waiting a good 8hrs+ after shocking is good pool chemical practice . If "Michael Brown" waits a couple minutes and that works for him then by all means have at it. I do know that under no circumstance would I reccomend just a couple minutes with a chlorine based shock. I cant imagine that the manufacturer would reccomend that either. Hope that helps a little. |
Question: | Can this product to be used in a concrete pool |
Answer: | I have a gunite pool and use this product. |

It will kill the toughest algae and bacteria as well as other harmful water contaminants. Super Pool Shock will kill visible algae blooms and invisible bacteria, which could cause illness to swimmers. Daily chlorination will kill most bacteria, viruses, and various microbes, however, it is good practice to ‘shock the pool’, or super-chlorinate the pool every few weeks. Doing this will also you to oxidize everything in the water, especially the invisible germs that may exist in the water.
Reliable & Easy to Use
In The Swim Pool Shock is our most economical chlorine shock treatment for pools, sold in convenient 1 lb. bags. Powerful formula contains 99% calcium hypochlorite in a powerful 68% available chlorine formula. Kills Algae & Bacteria
Use our Pool Shock to kill visible algae blooms and invisible bacteria, which could cause illness to swimmers. Super Chlorinate
One pound of In The Swim Pool Shock will raise free chlorine levels in a clean and balanced pool to 9 ppm, per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Pools with excessive debris, algae, suspended particles or heavy sunlight will need a proportionally higher dose of pool shock, to compensate for such factors. A double or triple dose is often required for poor water conditions such as spring openings, bacteria contamination, or severe algae blooms.

Improve Filter Efficiency
The HTH Super Clarifier coagulates the tiny particles that cloud your water. The new, larger particles are easier for your filter to pick up and remove.
Remove Contaminants
Both biological and physical contaminants can make your pool water cloudy. Use HTH Super Calrifier to remove dead algae and organic debris for crystal clear water.
Easy-to-Use Formula
The concentrated formula is easy to use. Just dilute with pool water and pour along the sides of the pool and into the skimmer. After 8 hours, vacuum the pool.
Test Equipment & Pool Water
Start with the obvious and scoop out any branches or leaves from the pool. Next, make sure the pump and filter are working properly and not clogged or damaged. Finally, test and balance your water, paying close attention to chlorine levels.
Shock Your Pool
If chlorine levels are below 1 part per million, brush the pool bottom to stir up any settled contaminants. Then, with the pump running, broadcast the HTH shock treatment evenly over a wide area in the deepest part of your pool. If granules settle at the bottom, brush again to disperse them. Water is ready for swimming when chlorine levels are between 1 and 4 ppm.
Use HTH Super Clarifier
If chlorine levels are between 1 - 4 parts per million and the water is hazy––but you can still see the bottom of the pool–– use HTH Super Clarifier. Dilute the product in a bucket of pool water and then pour along the sides of the pool and into the skimmer. Run the pump filter for 8 hours and then vacuum the pool. Be sure to clean or backwash your filter.

Question: | Can I use this for waste water treatment |
Answer: | I am no chemist, but it does clear up the pool when it turns green. So I suppose that you could, but I really do not know. Best of luck. |
Question: | Does it contain stabilizer, or is it not stabilized |
Answer: | I bought this product because calcium is not supposed to have stabilizer, but after five applications, my CYA reading is increasing. I am not happy. |
Question: | Is it a loose product and if so dose it come with a measuring cup for the required 1lb add |
Answer: | It is granular and comes with a measuring cup. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the cup as I assume it measures volume rather than weight but it could account for that. |
Question: | Can this be used in salt water pools |
Answer: | Yes, i use it in my salt water pool, one bag a week |
Question: | Does this really need to be diluted in water before adding it to your pool or can you just sprinkle directly into pool water (all around of course |
Answer: | I just sprinkle around pool |
Question: | So what's the difference between sodium and calcium hypochlorite ? Is 1pack of this is stronger than a bottle of 12.5pc sodium |
Answer: | Good question: I reviewed several sources and found the answers to be complicated. My opinion is that Granular calcium hypochlorite contains 65 percent of available chlorine. Therefore, if you are currently using sodium hypochlorite (12%), then you can make an equivalent stock solution by mixing 1.5 pounds of granular calcium hypochlorite to each gallon of water in the stock solution tank. Source of information http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=93148 The solid form (Calcium Hypochlorite) seems easier to use which is why I purchase that one. Additionally, the cost per unit of chlorine from the calcium hypochlorite seems to be less expensive. Again, sources of information show differing numbers including the amount of free chlorine released from each unit. It may be a good idea to try each one then test the resultant solution for the amount of available Chlorine. |
Question: | Is this safe for vinyl pools |
Answer: | buy a floating dispensor for 3 inch tabs, buysome tabs. next the important thing,a test kit,a simple 2 test kit will do for what you have.just test chlorine and ph, ph takes a week or so to settle down to a good reading.don't even need to test for first week. after you get some good reading then tell me what they are and I will help you to adjust it. its simple with a pool your size. run filter 6-8 hours a day.most important and don't forget this!!! have fun!!!!! depending on how your ph goes will determind what chlorine to use, there is no straight chlorine,it is all bonded to another element ,which element you want depends on your ph reading. |

In The Swim Pool Shock Treatment
Swimming pool shock treatments are an essential aspect of spring pool opening but can also be used to give your pool a quick chlorine boost. Pool Shock is our most popular and versatile pool shock treatment, used to kill algae and bacteria and remove micro-contaminants that make pool water cloudy.
Use our Pool Shock to kill visible algae blooms and invisible bacteria, which could cause illness to swimmers. Your daily chlorination of the pool will kill most pathogenic bacteria, viruses and microbes, however to be sure that the water is sanitary, it is good practice to 'shock the pool', or super-chlorinate the pool every few weeks, to oxidize everything in the water, especially the invisible germs that may be harboring in the water.
Reliable & Easy to Use
In The Swim Pool Shock is our most economical chlorine shock treatment for pools, sold in convenient 1 lb. bags. Powerful formula contains 99% calcium hypochlorite in a powerful 68% available chlorine formula. Granular chlorine Pool Shock is used for a variety of purposes to sanitize and disinfect pools, spas and fountains. Easy to use Pool Shock effectively treats 10,000 gallons of pool water per bag.
Kills Algae & Bacteria
Use our Pool Shock to kill visible algae blooms and invisible bacteria, which could cause illness to swimmers.
