13 best pool chlorine granules
Pool chlorine granules are a commonly used chemical product in the maintenance of swimming pools and hot tubs. They are typically used to sanitize and disinfect pool water by killing harmful microorganisms like bacteria and algae. Here are some key points about pool chlorine granules:
Chlorine Source: Pool chlorine granules contain chlorine as their active ingredient. This chlorine can come in different forms, with the most common being calcium hypochlorite or sodium dichloroisocyanurate.
Sanitizing Agent: Chlorine is an effective sanitizing agent that helps maintain water quality by eliminating bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that can lead to waterborne illnesses and cloudy water.
Oxidizing Agent: Chlorine also acts as an oxidizing agent, which means it helps break down organic contaminants such as body oils, sweat, and leaves that may enter the pool. This prevents the formation of unpleasant odors and cloudy water.
Usage: Pool owners typically add chlorine granules to their pool water regularly to maintain a consistent chlorine level. The exact dosage depends on factors like the pool size, water temperature, and bather load.
Balancing pH: It's important to monitor and adjust the pH level of the pool water when using chlorine. Chlorine works most effectively in a pH range of 7.2 to 7.6. pH levels outside this range can reduce its effectiveness.
Safety Precautions: Handling pool chlorine granules should be done with care. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for storage, handling, and dosing. Use appropriate protective gear such as gloves and safety glasses when handling the product.
Storage: Store chlorine granules in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture.Keep them out of reach of children and pets.
Compatibility: Chlorine can be used alongside other pool chemicals like pH adjusters, algaecides, and clarifiers to maintain water quality.
Regular Testing: It's essential to regularly test the chlorine levels in your pool water using test kits or test strips. This ensures that you maintain the recommended chlorine concentration for safe and clean water.
Shock Treatment: In addition to regular chlorination, pool owners often perform shock treatments using higher concentrations of chlorine granules to address water quality issues like algae blooms or chloramine buildup.
Remember that maintaining proper water chemistry in your pool or hot tub is essential for safe and enjoyable swimming. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific chlorine product you're using and consider consulting a pool professional for more detailed guidance on pool maintenance if needed.

User questions & answers
Question: | I used this product and my cya level went so high that i had to replace my pool water. i assume this is stabilized chlorine? if so how much |
Answer: | The ant trap creates a moat of water that ants cannot crawl/swim through to get to the feeder...gnats fly so they would still be able to get to the feeder. As an ant barrier, this product works great for my hummingbird feeders and oriole feeder. I have 6 of these traps! Would highly recommend for ants and other crawling bugs. Good luck with the gnats! |
Question: | Is it fast dissolving so I can scatter it directly in the pool |
Answer: | Because vendors are hoping you won't be paying attention |
Question: | can it be used to shock the pool?how |
Answer: | I spray mine before each season. Only reason I bought nee units because the color had faded after 8+ years of use. |
Question: | So I can use this instead of chlorine correct |
Answer: | I regret that I am not able to confidently answer your question. I'd have to disassemble the unit and I don't have an old one to examine. It could be that you could soak ithe unit in the Permethrine. Good luck! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do i still need to add additional chlorine to my pool?? Or is using this product once a week sufficient |
Answer: | It is 53.5% Trichlor, and other ingredients that you may have to use in your spa to maintain it properly. I have used it for a couple of years and works well. I am purchasing for the 3rd time. Most of the time I just add a tablespoon or 1 1/2 to a 425 gallon tub and works fine! You don't need a higher chlorine % if your test strips read properly, if not just add a little more. |

Answer: | Yes! We have a liner in ground pool and have used this for 4 years. |
Question: | Without having to weigh each dose, what do you use (measuring cup?) to determine a pound |
Answer: | The cup and instructions are on the tub. I use the recommendation for the size pool I have. Always test your water with your test kit. |

In The Swim Sodium Di-Chlor Chlorine Granular
Swimming pool shock treatments are an essential aspect of spring pool opening but can also be used to give your pool a quick chlorine boost. Sodium Di-Chlor Chlorine Granular is a strong pool shock treatment which is used to kill algae and bacteria as well as other harmful water contaminants. It is also a great shock to use for Spring pool openings.
Use our Sodium Di-Chlor Chlorine Granular to kill visible algae blooms and invisible bacteria, which could cause illness to swimmers. Your daily chlorination of the pool will kill most bacteria and other contaminants. To be sure that the water is completely sanitary, it is best to super chlorinate by shocking the pool every few weeks. Doing this also allows you to oxidize everything in the water, especially the various contaminants that may exist in the water.
Pool Care and Maintenance
It is important to maintain your pool/spa to keep it clean and healthy all year round. Good habits, such as cleaning your filter or emptying your skimmer basket, will ensure that your investment is protected for years to come. But most importantly, you and your family will be able to enjoy the swimming pool or spa each season.
Water Testing
Testing the water weekly or bi-weekly, depending on use and outside variables, helps keep your pool/spa water healthy. Utilizing a DPD or OTO reagent-based water test kit, test strips, or digital testing will help you monitor the pool or spa water chemistry.
Adjusting and Balancing
Adjusting and balancing your pool or spa water chemistry ensures that you will get the most out of the swimming season. The benefit of having good pH and Alkalinity levels is that it will increase the ability of your main sanitizer to kill bacteria. Balanced pool water chemistry will also reduce chemical and maintenance costs. Balanced pH and alkalinity help prevent corrosion and scale formation on the interior pool surface and surrounding equipment.
Sanitizing
There are many different types of sanitizers used in various pool and spa environments. Clean and healthy water starts by establishing a proper residual chlorine level with shock or concentrated granular chlorine. The most common way to maintain a proper chlorine level is by using trichlor chlorine tablets in either a floater or chemical feeder. Applying these steps to your normal maintenance plan will ensure the elimination of non-living organic contaminants, bacteria, micro organisms, and algae making your water safe to enjoy.
Pool Fun and Safety
Now that the water is properly balanced and sanitized, it’s time to get in there and have some fun! We recommend enhancing your outdoor living environment with games, floats or loungers, toys, and accessories. Get creative!
Safety is of the utmost importance, and there are many ways to help make your pool/spa safer. Having a life ring buoy, a shepherd's hook, depth markers, coast guard-approved life preservers, door and water alarms and having your local aquatic environment safety regulations on-hand will ensure a fun and safe environment for your family.
Treatment
Even after all your preparation, sometimes life happens and your pool or spa can get away from you. In those moments, we need to start back from the beginning with testing of the water. Now that you have a clear idea of the current readings, your next steps will depend on the type of symptoms your water is presenting. This may include an issue such as algae (green, yellow, black, etc.), cloudiness, living organics, debris, and other water conditions.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it ok to use this everyday to maintain our swim spa's (2500 gallons) chlorine level? I have to add about 2-3 ozs/day |
Answer: | 3" dia. by about 1.5"thick. the amount in a 50 lb. bucket I never thought about....I would say at least 100 of them...plus or minus... |
Question: | I feel dumb, but I can't figure out how to open this bucket. I've tried jostling the red tab and turning but to no avail. Any tips |
Answer: | Yes, i use it in my salt water pool, one bag a week |
Question: | Haven't ordered this in awhile. Do I have it right that the price for a single 50-lb tub has doubled in the last 6-8 months |
Answer: | I just sprinkle around pool |
Question: | How large are the tabs (3 inch or smaller) and how many tabs in each 50 lb bucket |
Answer: | Good question: I reviewed several sources and found the answers to be complicated. My opinion is that Granular calcium hypochlorite contains 65 percent of available chlorine. Therefore, if you are currently using sodium hypochlorite (12%), then you can make an equivalent stock solution by mixing 1.5 pounds of granular calcium hypochlorite to each gallon of water in the stock solution tank. Source of information http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=93148 The solid form (Calcium Hypochlorite) seems easier to use which is why I purchase that one. Additionally, the cost per unit of chlorine from the calcium hypochlorite seems to be less expensive. Again, sources of information show differing numbers including the amount of free chlorine released from each unit. It may be a good idea to try each one then test the resultant solution for the amount of available Chlorine. |

Your daily chlorination of the pool will kill most pathogenic bacteria, viruses and microbes, however to be sure that the water is sanitary, it is good practice to 'shock the pool', or super-chlorinate the pool every few weeks, to oxidize everything in the water, especially the invisible germs that may be harboring in the water.
Reliable & Easy to Use
In The Swim Pool Shock is our most economical chlorine shock treatment for pools, sold in convenient 1 lb. bags. Powerful formula contains 99% calcium hypochlorite in a powerful 68% available chlorine formula. Granular chlorine Pool Shock is used for a variety of purposes to sanitize and disinfect pools, spas and fountains. Easy to use Pool Shock effectively treats 10,000 gallons of pool water per bag.

Super Chlorinate
One pound of In The Swim Pool Shock will raise free chlorine levels in a clean and balanced pool to 9 ppm, per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Pools with excessive debris, algae, suspended particles or heavy sunlight will need a proportionally higher dose of pool shock, to compensate for such factors. A double or triple dose is often required for poor water conditions such as spring openings, bacteria contamination, or severe algae blooms.

DIRECTIONS FOR APPLICATION: Broadcast the product evenly over a wide area in the deepest part of the spa with water circulating. F DIRECTIONS OR SPA AND HOT TUB USE: Each level teaspoon (0.17 ounces) of this product will provide approximately 1.4 ppm available chlorine in 500 gallons of water. Using an appropriate test kit, test and adjust the water to the following values: pH 7.2-7.8, total alkalinity 60-100 ppm, calcium hardness 200 ppm minimum. Maintain these conditions for proper spa and hot tub operation by frequent testing with a test kit. Do not allow cyanuric acid level to exceed 150 ppm. It is recommended that spas and hot tubs be drained every 30-90 days. More often under heavy use. Consult manufacturer’s recommendations concerning the compatibility of chlorine sanitizers with their equipment. Some oils, lotions, fragrances and cleaners may cause foaming or cloudy water and may react with chlorine sanitizers to reduce their efficacy. DIRECTIONS FOR START-UP (FRESHLY FILLED) 1. Turn on the circulation system and ensure that it is operating properly. 2. Add 6 teaspoons of this product for each 500 gallons of water. Check the free available chlorine (FAC) and, if below 4-5 ppm, repeat as needed. Re-entry into treated spas is prohibited above levels of 3 ppm of chlorine. DIRECTIONS FOR REGULAR USE: Turn on the circulation system and ensure that it is operating properly. Scatter approximately 3 teaspoons per 500 gallons of this product over the surface of water. User questions & answers
Question: | how long ship |
Answer: | My only problem with shipping is that you have to be present for delivery. We wound up having to pick it up at our local warehouse for fedex. |
Question: | Can I use this for waste water treatment |
Answer: | I am no chemist, but it does clear up the pool when it turns green. So I suppose that you could, but I really do not know. Best of luck. |
Question: | Does it contain stabilizer, or is it not stabilized |
Answer: | I bought this product because calcium is not supposed to have stabilizer, but after five applications, my CYA reading is increasing. I am not happy. |
Question: | Is it a loose product and if so dose it come with a measuring cup for the required 1lb add |
Answer: | It is granular and comes with a measuring cup. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the cup as I assume it measures volume rather than weight but it could account for that. |
Question: | Can this be used in salt water pools |
Answer: | Yes, i use it in my salt water pool, one bag a week |
Question: | Does this really need to be diluted in water before adding it to your pool or can you just sprinkle directly into pool water (all around of course |
Answer: | I just sprinkle around pool |
Question: | So what's the difference between sodium and calcium hypochlorite ? Is 1pack of this is stronger than a bottle of 12.5pc sodium |
Question: | Is this safe for vinyl pools |
Answer: | buy a floating dispensor for 3 inch tabs, buysome tabs. next the important thing,a test kit,a simple 2 test kit will do for what you have.just test chlorine and ph, ph takes a week or so to settle down to a good reading.don't even need to test for first week. after you get some good reading then tell me what they are and I will help you to adjust it. its simple with a pool your size. run filter 6-8 hours a day.most important and don't forget this!!! have fun!!!!! depending on how your ph goes will determind what chlorine to use, there is no straight chlorine,it is all bonded to another element ,which element you want depends on your ph reading. |

HTH Ultimate Mineral Brilliance Chlorinating Granules
hth ultimate mineral brilliance chlorinating granules is an effective sanitizer for swimming pools that provides brilliantly clear water, controls algae and clarifies water. This enhanced formulation contains a built-in clarifier, stain and scale preventer and water softener. Finally, it provides Visible Blue Action, so you know it is working.
hth Sanitizers
Your pool stays clean and clear with hth sanitizer products, designed to effectively guard against bacteria, algae and other organisms. We offer two types of chlorine-based sanitizers: stabilized and unstabilized.
hth Ultimate Benefit:
HTH Ultimate Mineral Brilliance is a 7-in-1 multi-purpose sanitizer that provides brilliantly clear water, controls algae, clarifies water, dissolves fast, helps prevent stain and scale and softens water. The burst of blue leads to clearer, cleaner water. Visible Blue Action - so you know it's working!
Application instructions:
Use only a clean, dry scoop to measure this product. Do not use the scoop for any other purpose. DO NOT use in floater, feeder or skimmer.
Add the recommended dosage of this product during evening hours while the filter pump is running. When adding this product to your pool, broadcast the product evenly over a wide area in the deepest part of the pool. If any granules settle to the bottom of the pool, use brush to disperse until completely dissolved. Undissolved granules may cause bleaching or other damage to pool surfaces. Test free available chlorine residual with hth pool test kit or test strips. Do not enter pool until the free available chlorine residual is 1–4 ppm. Re-entry into treated swimming pools is prohibited above levels of 4 ppm chlorine for risk of bodily injury.
Test Your Water
How often you should test and balance your pool can vary based on how often you use it and a number of other variables, but it’s important to remember that, for chlorine and pH, you should usually test your pool two to three times a week. That may sound like a lot, but water balance is vital for your pool’s health and the health of the people who swim in it. When your pool is out of balance, your sanitizers can be less effective, the water can cause irritation to the skin and eyes, and if the water gets imbalanced enough, it can even damage the pool’s surfaces, structure, or equipment
Shock weekly
In ideal circumstances, shocking your pool just once a week will keep it looking clean and clear, but any heavy rainfall, signs of algae, use by lots of swimmers, or periods of very sunny weather can deplete free chlorine levels, which means an extra dose of hth Shock is needed. Sundown is optimum time to shock your pool because the chlorine can work without fighting the sun's ultraviolet rays and has more time to restore water clarity.
Overstabilization: What is it?
While small levels of CYA (20 – 40 ppm) do serve a purpose in protecting chlorine from sunlight degradation, too much can cause problems. Over-stabilization (> 90 ppm) is the buildup of cyanuric acid (CYA) in swimming pool water resulting from the use of stabilized sanitizers and stabilized shock products. It significantly decreases the effectiveness of chlorine in killing germs, bacteria and algae.
hth Pool Care offers sanitizer and shock products that are non-stabilized. These are calcium hypochlorite (cal-hypo) products, do not contain stabilizer and will not cause over-stabilization.
Symptoms of overstabilization:
-Green water.
-High chlorine reading with algae.
-Adding chlorine does not get rid of algae .
What is the Solution to Overstabilization?
If the CYA level is > 90ppm, adjust this by partially draining some water from the pool, refilling with fresh water, balancing the water and switching to hth non-stabilized sanitizers and shocks.
