14 best rat killers
Rat killers, also known as rodenticides, are substances or devices used to control and eliminate rat infestations. These products are commonly used in pest control efforts, especially in outdoor areas like patios, lawns, and gardens. Here is some information about rat killers:
Types of Rat Killers:
- Chemical Baits: Rat killers often come in the form of bait stations or loose baits that contain toxic chemicals. These chemicals are designed to attract rats, and when consumed, they are lethal to the rodents.
- Mechanical Traps: Rat traps, such as snap traps and electric traps, are designed to physically capture or kill rats. Snap traps snap shut when triggered, while electric traps deliver an electric shock to kill the rat.
- Natural Remedies: Some people prefer to use natural methods like peppermint oil, owl decoys, or live traps to deter or catch rats without using toxic substances.
Safety Considerations:
- When using rat killers, it's essential to follow safety guidelines carefully.Keep them out of reach of children and pets.
- Ensure that the products you use comply with local regulations and are labeled for the intended use.
- Be cautious when handling poisoned rodents, as they can pose a secondary risk to pets or wildlife that might consume them.
Placement:
- Proper placement of rat killers is crucial for their effectiveness. Baits should be placed in areas where rats are known to frequent, such as along walls or near entry points.
- Traps should be set in locations with high rat activity, such as near burrows or in dark corners.
Monitoring and Maintenance:
- Regularly check rat traps and bait stations to ensure they are still effective.
- Replace bait as needed and reset traps after a successful capture.
Environmental Impact:
- The use of rat killers can have environmental consequences if not used responsibly. Some rodenticides can harm non-target animals if they consume poisoned rats.
Professional Pest Control:
- In severe infestations or when dealing with rats in sensitive areas, it's often advisable to seek the services of professional pest control experts. They can assess the situation and employ appropriate control methods.
Preventative Measures:
- To minimize the need for rat killers, practice good sanitation by keeping food stored in sealed containers, sealing entry points, and removing potential rat shelters like piles of debris.
Remember that rat killers should be used responsibly, and it's essential to consider the potential risks to the environment and non-target animals when implementing pest control measures in your patio, lawn, or garden. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and local regulations when using these products.

User questions & answers
Question: | frankly I have loaded the trap but just can't see how the rat is supposed to get to the bait. How does the rat get to the bait |
Answer: | I bought the 8 pound package of the solid bait bars and they lasted two years. The last ones were as effective as the first. Just bought 8 pounds more. |
Question: | Will cats be able to get in this trap |
Answer: | I don't know why they say that. I throw it under our mobile home to keep mice from getting in our house but you don't want your pets to get at it or it will kill them if they get it and eat it. We get mice every winter and they wreak havic if they get in the house by traveling up the pipes under the house, like where the sink water pipes and drain pipes are. We had a mouse that kept eating the bait but didn't die from it. (I think they've changed the poison formula thanks to the freakin EPA and we finally gave up and got some snap traps that caught the vermin.) I don't use the bait anymore, just snap traps. |
Question: | does this come with bait |
Answer: | Bromadiolone is a very potent anticoagulant rodenticide and works extremely well and is the active ingredient in just one bite 2 bait cake. Deadly with a capital D. It is potentially quite dangerous to use around animals that may potentially ingest the poisoning victims carcass, still alive or dead. Many dogs, cats and birds die each year from this type of poison and Extreme caution is advised in product placement as well due to high accidental poisoning potential. |
Question: | What's the difference between tomcat's " tier i" and the "tier ii" bait station |
Answer: | I bought this stuff and although the mice ate it, it didn't kill them. They kept coming back. If you have a rat, maybe it's a pack rat and they will take the poison sqares back to their nest. You don't have to do anything. If you're lucky the rat will eat enough of it to kill it. I don't know if EPA rules made this company change the poison in them but it doesn't work and kill the rodents like it used to. It used to kill them dead with just one bite like it says on the package but it don't work like that anymore; at least it didn't work for the mice we get in our kitchen every winter. We had to use snap traps to get rid of the mice. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My Pet Ate RatX. What Should I do?
A: Our product is completely poison free, making it safe for use around all people, pets, and wildlife. It is only lethal to rats, mice, and voles, as the product targets a unique characteristic within their digestive tract. Do not induce vomiting. Simply make sure that the dog has access to plenty of fresh water.
Q: Why Does RatX Kill Rodents - Rats & Mice - and Not Harm Humans and Other Animals?
A: Because all rodents have a digestive system that is different from other animals. The way rodents absorb water through their lower gut is quite different to any other animals, including humans and birds. This unique digestive system is a part of what makes a rodent different from other animals.
Q: Is RatX Harmful to Wildlife?
A: No, RatX is safe for all wildlife. RatX is also safe for birds of prey as there is no risk of secondary kill.
Introduce RatX
Use RatX as instructed in areas where rats are an issue. The rat gets used to it. They trust it. And then, they eat it.
Dehydration
RatX blocks the hair-like receptors in the rats digestive system. These receptors tell them they're thirsty. So once they're blocked by RatX, the rat no longer has the desire to drink.
Kidney Failure
The dehydrated mouse is mummified from the inside out, so it never smells.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work for squirrels |
Answer: | Yes. It kills pine squirrels. I’ve never had a problem with Gray or fox squirrels so I don’t know if it works on them. But pine squirrels are extremely destructive and failing to live trap them and move them during the summer which I do, when they start moving in in the fall I believe it’s more humane to have them zapped rather then take them somewhere where they have no shelter or food stocked and suffer through a snowy winter. The recent run was attacking the headliner on a new car for nesting material. |
Question: | Will this catch a giant rat |
Answer: | I love this device and yes to the giant rat. Thought I had squirrels in my wall, put a few of these up in the attic and got seven. Yes seven rats over two days. I checked them twice a day. What I like is the rat is dead in the trap. I just pick up the trap, pour the rat out into bucket (husband gets to empty bucket). And rest. After two days. No more rats. Love these. I have four and use them in my chicken coop, shop and attic. FYI. I live on a farm and the corn, hay, and feed the chickens spread all over are meca mice/rat attractions. |
Question: | If the trap catches one rat, will it kill another one if it enters the trap, or do you have to remove the first one and reset it |
Answer: | No it will not kill the second rat. As soon as the first one is zapped it shuts off. You have go remove and turn back on. |
Question: | Bought this product and it’s now flashing red for no reason. I just put batteries in |
Answer: | Flashing red means you caught a rodent. If the trap is empty, the rodent got away. Place bait towards the back of trap. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this fit under the hood of my Camry? Rats are devastating wires under the hood. He's there almost every morning working away on his nest |
Answer: | I found that the traps are the best I have found however I also put lime on my driveway under my car rats will literally move out I put along walls in garage and around front yard I have 3 dogs and lime is harmful to domestic animals but lime and the traps helps get rid of rats and mice very quickly |
Question: | will these harm squirrles |
Answer: | Yes they definitely will. My pest control company says legally, they cannot set them outside because they can catch birds, squirrels, cat paws, dogs... they are really strong and effective for killing rats but you want to be careful. I don't know if they would kill a squirrel but I'd be careful setting them outside. |
Question: | I set 3 traps in our garage. A rat was caught 30 minutes ago, but is still moving! Is this normal |
Answer: | No. I have used the old school snap trsps made out of a wood board and metsl snap hinge and NEVER had this happen. I set out 6 of these and 2 totally took off with the trap still on. |
Question: | Rats are eating the bait without setting off trap...peanut butter bait cup is nibbled to empty. Anyone found a solution |
Answer: | Here is the answer. Take a half of a peanut and GLUE it to the bottom of the cup. Then smear a very small amount of peanut butter on and around the nut. This works because when they try to extricate the nut using force the trap will engage. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If the rats are stil alive, they can still produce bab rats. If we want to eliminate them, how is this product effective |
Answer: | I have not actually ever had a rat in my house. Mice and squirrels, and I believe to a great extent even insects, seem to be repelled by the smell of the mint. Since they don't like it, they leave. My aim has never been to kills anything, but to deter them from living in my space and encourage them to seek living quarters outdoors where they belong. It really does work, but if you are infested, it takes time I believe. You may have to resort to trapping or something to get a whole nest out. This product is more of a discourager and repellent, it does not harm or kill them. |
Question: | How long is it effective before you need to respray |
Answer: | I'm not sure. I spray a little every time I put a bag with any food leftovers in it in the can. I originally said I thought the bottle was expensive. However, I'm finding it's lasting pretty well. It sprays a fine mist, so you don't use a whole lot of product each time you spray. The main thing for me is that my garbage is still intact. I haven't seen hide nor hair of a squirrel anywhere near my garbage since I started using it. I've noticed there seems to be a lot fewer flies and ants too. So far, I love this product! |
Question: | I live in Florida does it work on plametto bugs .... rocches..... and ants |
Answer: | I bought this for a brief problem I had with ants which worked great on. The bottle does state it does repel: cockroaches, mice, and raccoons. It's the peppermint in it they don't like. I have also used pure peppermint oil on cotton balls in plastic baggies with holes poked in them. That also works well. |
Question: | does it work on roaches |
Answer: | Stuff works on roaches..they arent killed by it..but they sure are not in my moms kitchen anymore..she loves it. If she is happy i am buying more for her. Roaches use to be bold there..no more |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there something wrong with mine? It's very hard to crumble and separating bars is difficult-Some mice don't eat it-lot # is B |
Answer: | You should not kill possums they are good - they are called gods clean up crew. They eat ticks! |
Question: | Why is this just one bite ii cheaper than the bucket that has the same amount |
Answer: | Yes. We take a block of wood and put a long screw thru it and put bait on the screw. Then they can't carry the block away. No pets to worry about. |
Question: | Does it come in packets |
Answer: | There are 64 chunks in this 4 pound bucket. I counted them as I used them. |
Question: | what if my dogs get ahold of it |
Answer: | Best to use bait in safe perimeter traps. Best not to have this bait inside the house or attic. These attract mice and rats that can then hang out and die in your attic or walls causing days of putrid smells. |
Question: | Will this kill opossums |
Answer: | This trap has not been tested for use against toads. It is recommended for indoor use for rats only. |
Question: | Does this 4lb. Bait Chunx for certain have a hole through the center |
Answer: | This trap provides a shock of about 6,000 volts for two minutes, which is enough to kill most common rat species. |
Question: | How many blocks in this bucket |
Answer: | While the trap should buzz, it is typically a very quiet sound and may not be heard. As long as the light flashes when the trap is turned on, the trap is working properly. |
Question: | Can I just throw these through my attic, or do I need the traps |
Answer: | Yes and no... It is an electronic device and any exposure to significant elements will take it's toll. However, as a testament to their quality... I've had one outside, under an enclosed patio (so no direct exposure to sun/rain) for over a year in the Florida humidity, and it is still working perfectly. I honestly could not be happier with the quality and effectiveness of these traps. SO worth the extra money to not deal with snapping/glue traps, poison, etc. Probably the most humane as well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the shelf life of Just One Bite bait |
Answer: | Yes - Ramik 116300 kills rats, mice and meadow voles. |
Question: | Why do they only recommend it for agricultural buildings and not around homes |
Answer: | We have had an abnormally large propogation of Cotton Rats and Field Mice in the Texas panhandle this year, and I have found the Neogen Ramik bait to be very effective. I never thought about leaving the bait inside the bag, but suppose it would work well if the mouth of the bag was left open. Since rodents move along walls, pipes and ductworks, I try to place or throw the individual pellets into those places, as well as both sides of entry points. By scattering, I think you would get a more effective kill. If, however, you placed the bag near a crawl space entrance, it would probably get them as they enter or exit. Good Luck! |
Question: | is this an anticoagulant poison |
Answer: | This product absolutely works on squirrels & chipmunks. Im fairly certain that majority of the negative reviews claiming it doesn't work at all for any rodents, is solely based on the buyer not fully reading & following directions + researching the target rodent you're using it for. If you plan to use this for chipmunk control, you must use a bait station. This stuff attracts deer, raccoon, cats, dogs etc....seen them all on my game cams sniffing at the bait station. Also be aware that chipmunks do what's called caching their food, where they bury it in numerous random places. I learned of this after watching several hours of videos from my game cam where the chipmunk was going into the bait station, coming out with a nugget in its mouth, running out of camera sight & quickly returning for more. This went on for 6-8 hrs daily. Finally it began burying the bait within camera view, at which point I started researching & learned this is what they do, especially in winter when food is scarce. I panicked after seeing that it was burying the poison & i immediately went outside & dug up the poison- i know there's more out there but I have no clue where & that greatly concerns me as I have dogs. If you don't see a decrease in chipmunk activity, its probably because you're giving them too much. I fill one bait station, it gets depleted in 1-2 days, I then remove it so the chipmunk knows there is no more & hopefully returns to its caches of buried bait & ingests the poison. Hope that helps. Wish I could post the videos I have of the caching behavior. |
Question: | Ive put 9 litte squares and the rat took them..what do i do now |
Answer: | I setup one of my wireless Swann cameras and watched for a week as the rats/big field mice? popped out from my crawlspace and emptied the pellets one by one for ~20 min to an hour. Hoarding them? Every day, I'd fill the little plastic electric tape cover, every day the'd empty it. Near as I could see on the camera, there were/are 3 of the suckers. After a week, I pushed closed the little screen/flap cover of our crawlspace ad set rocks along the things so they couldn't get out of there. The other side fo the house there is a giant opening under where the fireplace is and I put another container of pellets for a few more days and watched as they once again, emptied and didn't die... Finally I set 6 traps in a semi-circle and watched as one by one they all succumbed to a thwack on the head. of course I still have 3.5 pounds of this stuff, so this time I'll set out a 3x1 board, place 8 pellets in a staggered row and nail them to the board so they have to eat them right there. I'll let you know how that goes, they are getting wary of the traps... |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work for Voles |
Answer: | Yes, the sections of the bars are difficult to break so I usually put the whole block in a plastic bag and lay the block on a right-angled surface(I use my deck railing) and smack one section off at a time with a hammer. Don't give up with the mice not eating it. If they have nothing else to eat they will find the bars. Sometimes it takes persistence until they are hungry. Good luck with it. I have to say my bars work!! |
Question: | Can I just put the whole bag in a crawl space ? Or do I need to open the bag |
Answer: | This is a box of 8- one pound packages, with each package having eight bars that you have to break apart. They are pretty tough to snap, and the crumbs go everywhere. If you are putting the bars in small bait stations, the pre-cut small chunks in the big bucket will be a lot easier to handle. However, if you are treating a large barn where you can hide the bars instead of using bait stations, this package of larger bars will do the trick. |
Question: | I’ve seen mixed reviews on if this gets rid of chipmunks, someone please give me a proper answer |
Answer: | This particular product comes as a cellophane wrapped bar scored into sections so it can be broken into pieces. |
Question: | How many days does it take to kill rodents? I have been placing a handful for 4 days and every day all the nuggets are gone. Am I just feeding them |
Answer: | Please keep away from animals! Lethal to dogs and cats! If you have cats outside they can get poisoned from eating the mice that have eaten the poison |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it only for indoor or outdoor too |
Answer: | Could work outdoors if you know where rats or mice are located/path they travel. |
Question: | Will it kill mice |
Answer: | It definitely kills rats. We had 1 or more and within a few days of putting the Tomcat out, they were gone. I haven’t seen any dead mice but I’m assuming it kills them too. |
Question: | Will this work for deer mice |
Answer: | I haven't heard of deer mice, But it works pretty good with mice and rats. |
Question: | Should I get this bag design or the bait block, I will be using them in unfinished attic and inside walls. Thanks |
Answer: | Same experience- the DeCon pellets work. The blocks made by either company do not work. Have tried the blocks with and without the wrapper. ( use gloves when taking off the wrapper...Odd that there are no instructions regarding the wrapper. Leave on or off. ) Bottom line is the blocks do not work. Pellets do, but they are off the market. My guess is for child and pet safety reasons. The warfarin active can kill and I guess if a hawk or fox eats a poisoned mouse.....Unfortunately, the old snap trap is the way to go. Glue traps are inhumane. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this t j eaton 166004 709 pn legal in fresno california |
Answer: | The rats remove the cartridge, take a few bites, then put it back. That's why the clips are rat friendly... Their other option is to go in the hole on the side. |
Question: | Does it work on chipmunks and red squirrels |
Answer: | A Cat should not be able to get inside the Station, however, the Poison will be scattered Inside and Outside of the Station. Ensure the Station and the Poison is Not accessible from any of your Pets - Dogs, Cats, Birds, etc... |
Question: | Does the bait stop the mouse from stinking after dying |
Answer: | You do not have a lifetime supply of bait unless you only plan on living a few years. All drugs have shelf lives. Buy small amounts only as needed and try to establish how old the product is before you buy it. In AZ the packrats will carry away your baits (if you are foolish enough to all it) and stash them in middens (usually out of sight and mixed in with nasty bits of cholla cactus) where they will remain for years until they are safe to eat by future generations of packrats. Do not underestimate your enemy ;) |
Question: | Is this a 'no secondary poisoning' product |
Answer: | From EPA website:https://www.epa.gov/rodenticides/choosing-bait-station-product-household-useReady-to-use bait stations (Tier 1) that have been shown to be resistant to tampering efforts by young children and by dogs and are considered to be weather-resistant may be used indoors and outdoors, within 50 feet of buildings. Tier 2 ready-to-use bait stations have been shown to be resistant to tampering by young children and by dogs but cannot be used outdoors because they are not considered to be weather-resistant bait stations. Tier 3 ready-to-use bait stations have been shown to be resistant to tampering by young children and can be used indoors in area to which pets have no access. Tier 4 ready-to-use bait stations either have not been shown to be tamper-resistant or have not been tested in that regard. Therefore, Tier 4 stations may only be used indoors in areas to which young children and pets have no access, including residences where no young children or pets live or visit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is there an expiration date or time when these traps and glue are no longer usable |
Answer: | The adhesive on these traps will remain intact for a year in typical conditions, assuming the trap does not fill with dust or pests quickly. If the trap is full or placed in a dusty environment, we recommend replacing it. If the trap appears dusty or covered with debris it is time to replace the trap. Please let us know if you have any further questions. Thank you for choosing Catchmaster! |
Question: | Do you need bait |
Answer: | We do not recommend the use of baits with our Glue Board products, as our Glue Tray is already scented and designed to attract pests without bait. Oil based producs, like cheese and peanut butter, in particular, will compromise the integrity of the glue and decrease the effectiveness of the trap. Let us know if you need any more information. Thank you for choosing Catchmaster! |
Question: | After catching snake how do you Discard the snake |
Answer: | I have caught several rattlers in my garage on these traps. My intent was for mice and rats, but if a rattlesnake is in my garage, I am glad to catch it with this trap. They were not dead and I heard the rattle when I opened my door to go in the garage. I immediately finished killing it. I have had family members bitten by rattlers and it is a painful, extensive stay in hospital. |
Question: | if a child touch it ? How do I remove it |
Answer: | In case of contact with adhesive, use vegetable or mineral oil to remove from skin or non-target animals. For floors, windows or other non-porous surfaces you can use oil or mineral spirits. If the glue comes on contact with material we recommend using a dry cleaner. Please let us know if you require more assistance. Thank you for choosing Catchmaster! |
