13 best paper wasp traps
Paper wasp traps are devices designed to capture and control paper wasps, which are a common type of wasp found in many regions. These traps are related to the field of pest control and are typically used in outdoor settings, such as gardens, patios, and lawns. Here's what you need to know about paper wasp traps:
Purpose: The primary purpose of paper wasp traps is to reduce the population of paper wasps in areas where they pose a nuisance or potential danger. Paper wasps can build nests near homes or outdoor living spaces, and their presence can lead to stings, which can be painful and, in some cases, trigger allergic reactions.
Design: Paper wasp traps come in various designs, but they typically consist of a container or chamber with an entrance that allows the wasps to enter but makes it difficult for them to escape. Some traps use attractants like pheromones or sweet baits to lure the wasps inside.
Attractants: To effectively trap paper wasps, many traps use attractants that mimic the pheromones or scents emitted by female wasps during the nesting season. These attractants draw the wasps into the trap.
Safe Capture: The traps are designed to safely capture the wasps without harming them. This is beneficial for those who want to avoid killing the insects but wish to remove them from their outdoor areas.
Location: Paper wasp traps should be strategically placed in areas where paper wasp activity is high. Common locations include near outdoor dining areas, gardens, patios, and eaves where wasp nests are often built.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential for the effectiveness of paper wasp traps. This includes emptying the trap periodically, cleaning it, and replenishing the attractant or bait as needed.
Safety: While paper wasp traps are designed to capture wasps without harming them, it's essential to handle the traps with care. Wear protective clothing, gloves, and take precautions when emptying or relocating traps to avoid getting stung.
Prevention: In addition to using traps, it's important to take measures to prevent paper wasps from nesting in unwanted areas. This can include sealing cracks and crevices, removing food sources, and using screens on windows and doors to keep them out.
Paper wasp traps can be a helpful tool for managing paper wasp populations around your home or outdoor spaces. However, it's important to use them in conjunction with other pest control strategies and take safety precautions to ensure effective and safe wasp management.

From the Manufacturer
Why guess which pest is bugging you? Now one trap does the trick. The RESCUE! W-H-Y Trap catches 6 species of Paper Wasps, 2 types of Hornets and 12 species of Yellowjackets – 20 species in all! As with our other RESCUE! products, the W-H-Y Trap works without killing agents. Instead, the insects are lured by the attractant, and die naturally inside the trap. The W-H-Y Trap uses an exclusive formulation of three separate attractants to lure these stinging pests. After they are lured to the trap, wasps, hornets and yellowjackets have two ways to enter: either through the top cap, or through the holes in the bottom cap. Once inside the trap, the insects cannot fly out and die either by drowning (top chamber) or dehydration (bottom chamber). The RESCUE! W-H-Y Trap can be used outdoors wherever there is a paper wasp, hornet or yellowjacket problem. It can be highly effective to place multiple traps around the perimeter of a yard or area where insects are entering. The RESCUE! W-H-Y Trap can be used in early spring when paper wasp, hornet and yellowjacket queens emerge from overwintering to look for new nest sites. It can also be used throughout the summer and fall to capture foraging wasp, hornet and yellowjacket workers. The first and only trap proven to capture Paper Wasps, Bald-faced Hornets and European Hornets in addition to Yellowjackets. Reusable. Durable construction holds up for multiple seasons. Environmentally responsible. Will not trap beneficial honeybees. No killing agents – insects die naturally. 2-week attractant kit included; no extra food bait required. Catches queens in spring before they build nests. Catches workers from summer through fall. Double-chambered design prevents insects from escaping.
- CATCH ‘EM ALL – Unsure if your problem is Wasps, Hornets, or Yellowjackets? The WHY Trap from RESCUE! attracts all of them, so you’ll never need to identify an insect. Simply hang outdoors and watch them pile up.
- HOW IT WORKS – Its unique dual-chambered design uses three attractants to catch 19 different species of insects. Wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets can crawl in through the top or bottom. Once inside, they expire naturally.
- WHAT IT CATCHES – The WHY Trap includes a two-week supply of attractant designed to attract paper wasps, bald-faced hornets, European hornets, and yellowjackets—not beneficial honeybees.
- REUSABLE – Its durable design allows this trap to be reused for many seasons. Attractant refills are available for purchase.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the attractant have to be replaced once the trap is full of wasps, hornets and yellowjackets |
Answer: | Bought this for son 2 days ago as has a hornet issue at his new house and there is already 11 hornets in it currently. 2 the first day! Not sure why people aren’t having luck as we certainly have. It says to replace every 2 weeks and have read some people used Mountain Dew with luck. |
Question: | Anyone have any success with paper wasps with this trap |
Answer: | I'm sorry.. the picture is small, I thought this was the sticky trap. we did have some minor success with this trap, but we ended up throwing it away. The green sticky trap works sooo much better. This trap eventually filled up, but it took several days before the first bug ventured inside. And several more days before a wasp went in. I would not purchase this again, the tall green sticky trap works better. Sorry I led you astray.. |
Question: | Hello does it work with honey bees and bumble bees |
Answer: | I never noticed any honey bees or bumble bees in our trap. Not sure why anyone would kill those. The lures (3 different types) that are included are supposed to be for wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets (which is why the trap’s name is WHY. Those are the ones that ruin your picnic. Hope that helps. |
Question: | Why place trap 20 feet away from yellow jacket nest, and why 20 feet away from outdoor activity area |
Answer: | The trap should be placed a minimum of 20 feet from known wasps/hornets nest to make sure that insects will find the trap. You also want to place it at least 20 feet from areas inhabited by people to ensure that wasps/hornets are not too close to people. Make sure to follow the instructions on the package. |
- THE ORIGINAL – There’s a reason you see this trap everywhere: it’s the original, and it works! There are roughly a dozen species of stinging yellow jackets throughout North America, and this trap is designed to lure them all.
- HIGHLY EFFECTIVE – Lured in by our specially formulated attractant, yellowjackets fly in through the holes in the bottom of the trap, continue upward through the interior cone, and become trapped. Once inside, they die from dehydration—no killing agent required.
- NON-TOXIC – Unlike potentially harmful sprays, this trap relies on a non-toxic mode of action to eliminate yellowjackets. Its durable plastic construction is built to withstand many seasons of use. Attractant refills are available.
- SMARTER PEST CONTROL – Our Reusable Yellowjacket Trap is specially designed to attract and kill yellowjackets, not beneficial honeybees. The included attractant lasts for weeks without daily maintenance.
- MADE IN THE USA – At RESCUE!, our goal is to design, manufacture, and market the safest and most effective pest control solutions available for homeowners. We are proud to manufacture our products in the USA!
User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used inside the home |
Answer: | Yes, it could be used inside. The trap does have bait that attracts the yellow jackets. This cotton ball with some liquid chemical could potentially draw insects inside the house (but that seems like less of a problem than having them already in the house). |
Question: | What is the attractant |
Answer: | The liquid attractant included is mostly heptyl butyrate. It is also recommended you also use a bit of meat. Ours is baited with the attractant and a bit of beef and, now the meat has aged a bit, it does a great job trapping wasps and only wasps. |
- ELIMINATE WASPS – Our exclusive VisiLure technology lures wasps, red wasps, mud daubers, and carpenter bees with appealing colors and a multi-dimensional pattern. Once attracted, they become stuck to the sticky surface and expire.
- NO KILLING AGENT – The targeted insects are naturally lured to the trap without odors, chemicals, or wasp sprays. It catches queens and workers, from spring through fall.
- PROTECT WILDLIFE – This TrapStik has been redesigned with bird guards to provide protection for birds, bats, and other small animals. Avoid hanging where birds or other wildlife activity happens.
- PREVENT DAMAGE – Mud daubers (mud wasps, dirt daubers) and carpenter bees can cause serious property damage. Our TrapStik can stop this before it starts, without the use of potentially harmful sprays or chemicals.
- MADE IN THE USA – At RESCUE!, our goal is to design, manufacture, and market the safest and most effective pest control solutions available for homeowners. We are proud to manufacture our products in the USA!
User questions & answers
Question: | The bird guards don't look small enough to protect hummingbirds. Do you make smaller ones |
Answer: | Hello Amazon Customer, Thank you for sharing your concern with us. We do not make nor sell smaller bird guards. Working with ornithologists to redesign the product, we took every precaution to minimize the possibility of wildlife getting caught. Unfortunately with any sticky trap, there is a risk of an unintended catch. We are continually working on improving our products based on customer feedback. |
Question: | why is price point so high? these were about $7 previously. not worth |
Answer: | Hello Amazon Customer, We thank you for using our TrapStik for Wasps. The improvements we made to TrapStik WASP did require a modest cost increase to our retail partners. We do not control the sale prices on AMAZON.COM.” You can also find our redesigned TrapStik for Wasps at bricks and mortar stores as low as $9.47. |
Question: | Why the high cost much cheaper other places |
Answer: | Hello Amazon Customer, We thank you for using our TrapStik for Wasps. The improvements we made to TrapStik WASP did require a modest cost increase to our retail partners. We do not control the sale prices on AMAZON.COM.” You can also find our redesigned TrapStik for Wasps at bricks and mortar stores as low as $9.47. |
Question: | Do these also attract honey bees? I wouldn’t put up anything that would threaten their dwindling populations |
Answer: | *YES, IN F A C T - "Bee populations in the United States ARE declining(!) at a rapid, unprecedented rate. Since 2006, commercial beekeepers in the United States have reported honey bee colony loss rates averaging 30 percent each winter — startling, when compared to historical loss rates of 10 to 15 percent." That said, I have used several of these traps & only caught a few pollinators. This seems directly related to placement. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this product catch boring / carpenter bees |
Answer: | I have to be honest. The traps did not work for me. The yellowjackets totally ignore the trap even after following the instructions to the letter. I do not reccoment this product. What truly works well is the aerosol spray that you shoot into the wasp nest. That stuff works much better. I would not buy these traps ever again. |
Question: | How many packets is this for |
Answer: | You cut the plastic covering the yellow “funnel” all around and discard. Then you carefully pull the funnel through the opening you just made. The lure is already in the pouch that you fill with warm water to the “full” line. Gently swish it a little. Hang up the bag with a sturdy wire or zip tie. I hung one up with a twist tie and it fell off. |
Question: | Does this have the yellow attractant and the green pouch to add to the water |
Answer: | These are one time use. Disposable. Toss the whole thing and buy more. |
Question: | Do you have to buy the traps separately |
Answer: | Used this on the Front Range just north of Denver and couldn’t believe how well and fast it worked. It’s still catching them a week later! I have two hanging and must be ~ 30 in each one. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this catch the Japanese hornet |
Answer: | I can't speak directly to trapping the very large Japanese hornet because they're only found on a few Asian islands. But, if they can fit through the 0.3875" (0.98425 cm) funnel hole and you know what they're attracted to...then yes they can be trapped. They primarily consume other insects so try using an protein attractant like fish or red meat. Start by experimenting with that attractant in the 2-liter bottle. Good luck! "The Japanese giant hornet is a subspecies of the world's largest hornet, the Asian giant hornet. It is a large insect, with adults frequently growing to greater than 4.5 centimetres (1.8 in) long, with a wingspan greater than 6 centimetres (2.4 in) . In many Japanese mountain villages, the hornet is considered a delicacy when fried." Wikipedia |
Question: | Is this effective with ground nesting hornets |
Answer: | I have wasps, not hornets, and our wasps were in underground nests. It was very effective. We had 3 bottles and had to empty them constantly. We found that apple juice concentrate was the most effective bait - the manufacterer recommends cat food but that was ineffective for us. Two cans of frozen apple juice concentrate per 2 liter bottle made 'em come running...to their deaths! This year, we built a huge garden over their nests in addition to the fatal funnels. I've seen 2. :) |
Question: | Would this catch flies |
Answer: | Not as well as the fly trap version. The flies are attracted to the blue fly funnels. Wasps are attracted to yellow |
Question: | I don't want to kill honey bees. Does this work for just wasps and yellow jackets |
Answer: | We baited ours with apple juice and raw meat. Plenty of red wasps, but no bees even though there are plenty around here. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it bee free |
Answer: | It states it can be used to attract carpenter bees, so I would say no. Any insect that lands on the sticky coating will get stuck. |
Question: | How long does the sticky surface stay sticky |
Answer: | We’ve had them up as long as three months and they were still sticky. We replaced them only because they were full. |
Question: | is the bird guard small enough to guard hummingbirds from getting caught |
Answer: | Although it has a protection guard for birds, I would not recommend hanging near small birds are. The trap is very sticky. |
Question: | Where does this ship from |
Answer: | Dallas, Texas |

Question: | Will this catch wasps? We have a lot of the red type |
Answer: | The kit has 3 components: A bottle of concentrated liquid that you add water to (in the top chamber of the trap, pour in the liquid, and add water till you get to the line on the side of the upper portion of the trap), a second little packet of liquid that you use to moisten the small pad in the bottom of the lower chamber of the trap, and a third small cartridge with a solid/gel that you flip open the top and snap into the lid (also in the upper chamber). I think there are 3 different lures so that you can attract different kinds of bugs. Refill kit comes with detailed instruction sheet. Question: | how long are the traps good for? I put 5 of them all around our property and they're all loaded with dead yellow jackets. How long can I leave them |
Answer: | One refill is a 2 weeks supply. It is an effective solution IF you keep refilling your trap with new refills after the 2 week period is over. I have caught many very large queen yellow jackets at times. Cheaper than paying a Pest Control Co., $90+ for a visit to get rid of a nest in your siding or other area of your house or garden. |
