14 best bug bombs

Bug bombs, also known as insect foggers or pest control foggers, are pesticide products used to eliminate or control a wide range of household pests, such as insects and spiders. They are commonly used in homes, offices, and other indoor spaces to treat infestations or as a preventive measure. Here are some key points about bug bombs:

  1. Functionality: Bug bombs work by releasing a fog or mist of insecticide into the air in an enclosed space. The fog spreads throughout the room, reaching hidden or hard-to-reach areas where pests may be hiding. This exposure to the insecticide is intended to kill or repel the pests.

  2. Types of Pests: Bug bombs are effective against various common household pests, including:

    • Cockroaches
    • Ants
    • Fleas
    • Spiders
    • Bedbugs
    • Flies
    • Mosquitoes
    • Silverfish
    • Ticks
  3. Application: To use a bug bomb, you typically place the canister or container in the center of the room or area to be treated. You then activate the device according to the manufacturer's instructions. This may involve pressing a button, releasing a safety latch, or using a timer. Once activated, the fogger releases the insecticide into the air, creating a fog that fills the room.

  4. Safety Precautions: Bug bombs are pesticides and should be used with caution. It's essential to follow the safety instructions provided on the product label. Some key safety precautions include:

    • Evacuating the treated area along with any pets and plants.
    • Covering or removing exposed food, dishes, and utensils.
    • Turning off pilot lights and open flames as the fogger may be flammable.
    • Ventilating the area thoroughly after treatment to remove any remaining fumes.
  5. Effectiveness: Bug bombs can be effective at killing pests that are in direct contact with the fog. However, they may not reach pests hiding in cracks, crevices, or deep within furniture. In some cases, multiple treatments or additional pest control methods may be necessary.

  6. Residual Effects: Some bug bombs leave behind a residue that can continue to kill or repel pests for a period after the initial treatment. This residual effect can provide longer-lasting protection.

  7. Specific Uses: Bug bombs are commonly used for treating infestations in homes, apartments, and commercial buildings. They are also used for pest control in vehicles, boats, and recreational vehicles.

  8. Regulations: The use of bug bombs is regulated by government agencies, and it's important to use these products in accordance with local and national regulations. Always read and follow the instructions on the product label carefully.

While bug bombs can be an effective tool for pest control, it's important to use them safely and in conjunction with other pest management practices, such as proper sanitation and sealing entry points for pests. If you have a severe or persistent pest problem, it may be advisable to consult with a professional pest control service for a comprehensive solution.

User questions & answers

Question: How long does it last? One month, two? Nothing on the product states how long it remains effective. Raid says theirs last for two months. Thank you
Answer: Can't say really. I bombed the place for fleas and it was pretty effective. The fleas came back at one point, but it is really hard to keep them out anyways. But it was many months. Can't say that is because it lasted for that long though.
Question: Do you have to turn off your pilot lights before use
Answer: It says right on the front of the box "No need to turn off pilot lights" so you should be fine to leave it on. Maybe just don't place the can right next to the stove.
Question: Do you have to/should you cover beds & bedding around this
Answer: No, you do not have to cover anything. Just put some newspaper down on the floor where the aerosol can goes. I have never had anissue with any residue.
Question: is hot stuff fogger safe around infants and pets
Answer: Just read the user manual because I had the same question. It says: "Do not allow adults, children or pets to enter the treated area until vapors, mists and aerosols have dispersed and the treated area has been thoroughly ventilated." So, it looks like it is safe as long as it has "dispersed" and the area is "thoroughly ventilated".

User questions & answers

Question: Only kills "on contact"? Keep applying until the eggs hatch to get them all
Answer: Yes, this product is a waste of money and time. I highly recommend Precor 2000 Plus instead, it killed everything with only one treatment. It leaves a residual on the eggs that kills them as they hatch so you don't have to keep bombing!
Question: how many hours must I stay out of the house
Answer: We thank you for your inquiry. You will need to stay our of the home for at least four hours. After you fog, you will need to leave the home for two hours, and then come back to air out your home for an additional two hours before returning to your home to stay.
Question: Is this product non flammable or do I have to turn off the A/C and refrigerator
Answer: Not THAT flammable... so unless your AC vents... refrig-fins, etc. are infested with insectoids... TURN 'EM OFF! Keep air-circulation to a minimum while "smoke" spreads and soaks selected area. Fire is not the concern; rampaging BUGS trying to escape IS...!!
Question: Can this be used in a vehicle
Answer: I used it in my full size SUV. But, you can't just put the can in, set it off, shut the door and walk away. The space it too confined. So, I pulled the car out of the garage. Then I held my breath, opened one car door, set the can off, leaned in through the open car door, held the can and directed its spray under the seats and over the carpets. I leaned into one door at a time, applied the spray, then shut the door. I pointed the can away from myself in the open outdoors as I walked to the next door, opened it and repeated the action. The can was about over when I finished. Next day, no more fleas!

User questions & answers

Question: Will this kill termites while the studs are exposed
Answer: Thank you for your question. No, our fogger will not be effective in killing termites.
Question: is it safe to use in a household with cats
Answer: If I remember correctly I believe it said on the label that you should have them outside while you're doing it and keep them outside for at least one to two hours and then it will be safe. Also be sure to shake the can right before you press the button on the top or it will come out like what I make a mess liquid should have said it will come out as a liquid and make a mess.
Question: Does it set off smoke alarm
Answer: It could damage smoke alarms, if possible, suggest to take off smoke alarm before fogging.. and to be honest this product is only ok, there is better out there
Question: Does this product kill the flea eggs
Answer: It did not appear to, we had to apply a second time about 2 weeks after the initial application. Honestly we've had better luck killing the fleas by using Bayer Advantage II for the cats, and K9 Advantix II for the dogs (kills all fleas and eggs where the animals frequent).

User questions & answers

Question: Does this kill ighting bugs
Answer: I can't imagine it wouldn't stick to finished wood. You may want to try in a spot that doesn't show as a test. 4 oz bottle is a lot of super glue.
Question: Does it keep bees out of the yard
Answer: I haven't tried it with paint yet. This stuff is outstanding on every surface I've worked with. It sets very quickly and the bond is really strong. It's become my go-to glue.
Question: Does this also control Yellowjackets (wasps
Answer: Absolutely. Be sure to sand and clean the metal surface first and wipe with isopropyl alcohol or acetone. This is high viscosity super glue with an activator that slows the cure compared to conventional super glue. How do I know? I formulated this product when it was called Nexabond 2500 before DAP purchased the brand.
Question: Does this prevent & repel mosquitoes? or just kill them if you happen to hit one with the spray
Answer: I haven't tried that combination yet but I dont see why it wouldn't work. I have used the glue on lots of wood, plastic, and glass projects with no problems just not a glass wood combination.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this kill spider mites
Answer: I wouldn't recommend it. It didn't kill one gnat.
Question: Does this digger kill bed bugs
Answer: Hello, Thank you for your question. Our fogger is not labeled to kill bed bugs. Best, John
Question: Does this kill bed bugs and their eggs
Answer: Pyrethrins and Pyrethroids: Pyrethrins and pyrethroids are the most common compounds used to control bed bugs and other indoor pests. Pyrethrins are botanical insecticides derived from chrysanthemum flowers. Pyrethroids are synthetic chemical insecticides that act like pyrethrins. Both compounds are lethal to bed bugs and can flush bed bugs out of their hiding places and kill them. However, where resistant bed bug strains exist, these treatments may cause them to move to a new hiding place or temporarily flush them out of existing locations. Some bed bug populations have become resistant to pyrethrins and pyrethroids. Sometimes using a combination product (either multiple pyrethroid or pyrethrin active ingredients, or one that combines different chemical classes into the same product) can improve bed bug control. It can also be helpful to switch to an entirely different chemical class to control resistant bed bug populations.
Question: Does this fogger and kill stink bugs
Answer: cypermethrin will kill stink bugs but there are other products such as Cyper WP which lasts a bit longer and stays on the surface of porous areas making it more available to this pest. Unfortunately if you are dealing with them in your house right now you will only see limited results. Stink bugs move into structures to overwinter. They usually squeeze into wall voids, false ceilings, attics and other areas that are inaccessible to people and insecticides. As the heat kicks on in the house, the stink bugs warm up and start becoming active and emerge from hiding, driving homeowners nuts. Because most folks usually have no idea where the bugs are harboring you can only treat around baseboards, door frames and window frames and hope the insects will emerge where you have sprayed. After they contact the treated areas it can take several hours for them to die. It is still worth spraying now to get rid of some of the bugs, but you will keep seeing them until late spring when they will emerge en masse and leave your home. They do not eat, mate or lay eggs while indoors so need to worry about any damage or future baby stink bugs. This year you can be proactive by stopping these pests before they move in for the winter. You should spray Cyper WP outdoors around your door frames, window frames, vents, eaves, around the bottom of your foundation, and any other crack or crevice where an insect could gain entry once a month August-November. Most folks see a 80-90% reduction in stink bugs the first year and even better results in the following years as the stinkbug pheromone fades away.

User questions & answers

Question: How long does it take for the fogger to finish
Answer: I would have to say around 5 minutes
Question: can I use it in my car
Answer: The fog is slightly flammible. You need to take precautions using this in a house, a car is way too small. If there were some kind d of ignition source I would hate to see what would happen. Maybe if you got 4 units in a 2 car garage and opened all the doors and windows and disconnected the battery...
Question: How many are included here? The description says ( 2-3/2-Ounce ) but I'm not sure what that means
Answer: If you look on the front cover it says 3 cans included
Question: How many bedbug fogger container can i use in my bedroom and living room
Answer: Depends on the size of the room and how severe the problem is. One container for a room ~12 x 14 should work. Give the aerosol two hours to disperse, then open the room door and windows (weather permitting) and let it air hour for another hour.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use it in a minivan when you've seen a roach go into the vehicle from a public location? If yes, can you leave the van over the weekend
Answer: I personally wouldn't use this in an area where children will be touching or anyone really, but I don't like chemicals much. I bought it for an attic, but haven't used it yet. I would suggest small roach bait stations. You can probably find them in just about any store that sells other bug/mouse poisons.
Question: Can this use in chimney
Answer: No, if used in a small space like that it can explode, just set it off in the room with the chimney
Question: Will this kill carpet beetles
Answer: It has been proven to kill a variety of beetle species when used in spaces up to 6,000 cubic feet per the instructions. So it may be worth a shot.
Question: Will it kill roach eggs ? And get inside small appliances and furniture
Answer: Yes when used as directed in the cubic feet that is in the directions. Also make sure to open up furniture and cabinets per the directions for best results. Roaches have no defense against this product, but if the space is larger than the cubic feet prescribed per can then you may need more than one can. This is a commercial-grade insect fogger. It will give you 100% kill results but you have to use it right. Great question thanks!

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use it for a vehicle
Answer: Yes you can use it in a vehicle, I got an infestation of ants in a truck once and used this to rid the truck of them. Used it a couple of times on different vehicles with the same great success!! You will have to clean your windows afterwards. Or just pay for an interior detail job. You can put up your windshield sun screens to help with the clean up. Open your glove box and console but remove any napkins and straws that are not enclosed. Put a plastic bag or plastic wrap on the inside mirror, just helps with cleaning. Never had another ant or any other type of bug. Make sure you do this outside and not in a garage, also you vehicle will look like it is smoking (looks like it's on fire) because this is a fog like smoke and not a wet spray. Have heard of neighbors thinking that your vehicle was on fire. After the allotted time just roll down the windows and let it air out. Good Luck!!
Question: Does this require me to remove all the food in the refrigerator and countertops (ie Fruits
Answer: I remove the food from coutertops and sometimes store it in the refrigerator while I fumigate....also put away pet foods
Question: How effective is this on wasps
Answer: This puts outs a smoke, unless you have them in the walls. You need a wasp spray something with reach. Plus this is the most worthless product I have ever used. Wasps and spiders are some of your most toughest to exterminate. In a 1008 foot home my son and I put a lot of these only to come back the next morning with nothing dead not even mosquitos. So if you are fumigating your home stick with foggers.
Question: Do I put all fumigators on 1st floor or put them evenly on 1st and 2nd floor in a two story house
Answer: Place they evenly on both floors of your two story house. One piece of information (not sure if this applies to you, but it happened to me), if you have alarms, a-n-y kind, especially fire alarms, make sure you turn them off and they are NOT on a battery reactor. Otherwise they will go off and you'll find the fire department at your door.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the difference between Harris diatomaceous earth and Harris bed bug killer diatomaceous earth
Answer: None that I know of.
Question: Is it pet friendly
Answer: Yes. This stuff just comes from "diatoms". Basically, their crustaceans. It cuts the bugs exoskeleton and they dry out, but it takes time for them to pass through the dust for it to cut them up and they lose body water. Doesn't hurt us or animals, but I wouldn't dust it to the extent that you and the pets are breathing it so much. Make sure you change your house filters often or it can clog up the systems and you will have another issue. Whatever you use...if it says "residual", that is what is not safe for pets. It can get in their pads and absorb poison into their feet. Most other control treatments just need to get dry for 8hrs.
Question: how would this be used to prevent bed bugs
Answer: I have lived through this nightmare with tenants bringing. If you rent, do NOT try to do it yourself, depending on the infestation they can be hard to eradicate. Do the right thing and notify. Don't risk taking them to someone else's property if you move. Look up how to check for them carefully with flashlight. I used a professional company--3 sprays 2 weeks apart using a different mix chemicals each time, and still a tenant saw one that got away in a box of stuff she had and did not check it carefully when un-bagging, that was 10 days after 3rd spray so had them come and spray again and check, and they got rid of their old mattress/box spring and two ripped couches. I think it had been going on for months, but new roommate was sensitive to bites and figured it out, so I would say they bred for months. The prep work is crucial to winning the war (you can look that up,plenty of info online) plus I have used this along edges of rooms, corners of closets, backs of dressers, drawer backs and inside when drawer removed, sockets, and will continue to do every few weeks after vacuum for safeguard. You don't usually see them as they hide during day, unless you have a heavier infestation, alcohol will kill them on contact and used in spray bottle for shoes and some tiny areas. All exterminating companies will do a free inspection to see if you have them and not hard to learn to check yourself and where. I highly advise to be diligent for several months and not let your guard down to quick!
Question: Does this product have any other ingredient besides DE
Answer: This is a mechanical insecticide, that is to say it is Diatomaceous Earth powder, a soft siliceous powder which lacerates the abdomen or if ingested kills the insect within 48 hours. The insect quite literally dies the " death of a thousand cuts " . It's 85% DE and 15% other which is most likely a filler unspecified however. So far my experience with it has been very positive, I haven't seen any insects since distributing this powder. I do recommend the use of a dust mask when dusting your rooms as we should always err on the side of safety. If you have a problem you'll love this product . BTW remember it must remain dry to be effective and keep in mind that with these type infestations persistence is key to winning so don't let up.

Our Story

Problem solving has a long heritage at PF Harris. In 1924, two years after its founding, the company tackled the Calvin Coolidge White House, which had been overrun for years by roaches and water bugs. Harris’s product was so successful in eliminating the scourge that he was described on the front page of the Washington Times as a "vermin slayer" who has just fought a decisive, winning battle with a horde of cockroaches which infested the lower regions of the Executive Mansion.

Over the course of the next few months Harris took “his final feast” to dozens of government buildings, including the Senate Office Building, the Department of Justice, the Supreme Court and Walter Reed Hospital. Success followed success: Each superintendent of the various buildings was highly satisfied with the results.

The company today stays nimble enough to respond to changing market demands, leading the way in the development of numerous products, including natural insect repellents like Swamp Gator and Swamp Gnat which repel biting insects without using deet. Beyond the products it sells, Harris helps customers find easy and economical solutions to pest problems through helpful labeling, instructive videos and personal advice.

It’s a brand with a reliable past and an innovative future. PF Harris is America’s oldest EPA-registered company. With more than 55 products, the company provides solutions to treat everything from roaches and bed bugs to scorpions and stink bugs.

Identify, Eliminate & Prevent

Harris Diatomaceous Earth Bed Bug Powder is an important part of the bed bug treatment process. Using a liquid spray and mattress encasement cover along with the powder will increase your chances of success. Below are the steps to identify, eliminate and prevent bed bugs infestations.

1. Identify

Appearance

Bed Bugs are tan to brown blood sucking parasites up to 5mm long (roughly the size of an apple seed) with a flat, oval shaped body. Bed Bugs are often confused with the following insects:

  • Fleas
  • Lice
  • Lint/Seeds
  • Carpet Beetle

Signs of Activity

Many people believe that bed bugs are too small to be seen. This isn’t true. While Bed Bugs are usually found in the bed, they can navigate around the bedroom and even into the living room. Bed bugs spend the day in harborages close to a bed, couch or chair that people sit in for long periods. They come out at night and crawl to a bed or chair to get a blood meal.

To check your bed for activity, look along the underside of the seams of the mattress. In most cases, if you have bed bugs you will notice dark colored fecal matter in this area.

Next, check the cracks of the headboard and bed frame. Bed bugs, if squished, will leave a dark red stain behind. In cases of heavy infestation, the blood sucking parasites may be found all around the room most commonly in the following places:

  • Folds of curtains
  • Seams of chairs and couches
  • Behind wall hangings
  • Edges of electrical outlets and window frames

Bites

Bed bugs usually feed between at night while we are asleep. They can feed up to 10 minutes before returning to a hiding area to digest the meal. After feeding, bed bugs may be dormant for 5 to 7 days while they digest the blood meal.

Although the bite may not be immediately felt, people often react to the proteins of the bed bug saliva introduced during biting. Usually, a reddish spot may develop, associated with some swelling and itching. There may be little response immediately following the bite, with peak itchiness being noticed one to two days later. Repeated exposure to bed bug bites may produce more intensive reactions and itchiness. However, these reactions are highly variable and some people may show absolutely no signs of being bitten while others react strongly. Fortunately, testing has determined that bed bugs are incapable of transmitting human pathogens.

2. Eliminate

  • Wash and dry bed linens and furniture covers at high temperatures. Minimum drying time: 20 minutes.
  • Disassemble bed. Thoroughly vacuum all six sides of box springs, mattress and bed components. Vacuum furniture, carpets and floors.
  • Shake container prior to spraying mattress, box springs, bed components, flooring and baseboards. Allow to dry completely.
  • Enclose mattress and box springs in encasements to prevent bed bug entry and exit. Do not remove encasements.
  • Apply powder into cracks and crevices in furniture and rooms.

Most insecticides used for bed bug control are primarily of the pyrethroid> Vacuuming

Thoroughly vacuum all 6 sides of box springs and mattresses. Vacuum all cracks and crevices within the furniture of the bed and nearby electrical outlets, baseboards and floors prior to treatment. Empty the vacuum contents into a plastic bag and discard in trash.

Handling Bedding

Sheets and other bedding can be easily disinfected by laundering that involves a dryer cycle. The high temperatures involved in drying are critical to successfully kill bed bugs, with exposure to temperatures exceeding 120º F for 20 minutes usually sufficient to kill all life stages.

When stripping beds during a bed bug treatment, pull the sheets carefully so as not to dislodge eggs or drop bed bugs onto the floor where they may be missed by other treatments. Accidental spread of bed bugs can also be prevented by bagging the bedding as it is moved to the laundry.

Mattress / Boxspring Encasements

Mattress encasements enclose your mattress and box spring and are an integral step in the treatment process for two reasons: Firs, they protect your investment in bedding. Second, they reduce the areas where bed bugs can hide nearest to you. Water-resistant, tight-weave fabric prevents the entry of even the smallest bed bug.

Disposal of Infested Items

Disposal may be considered for mattresses, box springs, couches or other furniture that is heavily infested with bed bugs. If this is done, proper disposal should be ensured. Leaving such items on the street for disposal may cause them to be scavenged, which will spread infestations to new dwellings. Be careful when removing the items from the structure so that bed bugs will not become dislodged and infest other areas inside.

  • Re-pack luggage contents into sealable plastic bags
