2 best tick repellent

Tick repellents are products designed to deter ticks from latching onto humans or animals.Ticks are small arachnids that can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Using tick repellents is an essential part of pest control, especially in areas where ticks are prevalent. Here are some key points about tick repellents:

  1. Active Ingredients: Tick repellents often contain active ingredients such as DEET (N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide), picaridin, permethrin, or natural oils like citronella, eucalyptus, or lemon. These ingredients work by masking the scent of humans or pets, making it harder for ticks to detect and latch onto their hosts.

  2. Application: Tick repellents come in various forms, including sprays, lotions, creams, and clothing treatments. Sprays and lotions are applied directly to the skin, while clothing treatments involve spraying the repellent on clothes, shoes, and camping gear.

  3. Permethrin-Treated Clothing: Permethrin is a potent insect repellent that can be sprayed or soaked onto clothing, boots, and camping gear. Permethrin-treated clothing provides long-lasting protection, even through several washes.

  4. Natural Tick Repellents: Some people prefer natural alternatives to chemical repellents. Essential oils like citronella, eucalyptus, lavender, and tea tree oil are believed to have tick-repellent properties. However, their effectiveness might vary, and it's essential to reapply them frequently.

  5. Preventive Measures: Besides using repellents, taking preventive measures such as avoiding tall grass and wooded areas, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, tucking pants into socks or boots, and performing tick checks after spending time outdoors can further reduce the risk of tick bites.

  6. Pet Tick Repellents: Tick repellents are also available for pets. These products come in various forms, including collars, spot-on treatments, shampoos, and sprays. It's essential to use tick repellents specifically designed for the type of animal you have, as some products are formulated for dogs and may not be safe for cats.

  7. Tick-Proofing Your Yard: Keeping your lawn well-maintained by regularly mowing the grass, removing tall weeds, and creating a barrier between wooded areas and your yard can reduce the presence of ticks. Additionally, consider using tick control products specifically designed for outdoor use.

When using tick repellents, it's crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding application, reapplication intervals, and proper usage to ensure effectiveness and safety.

Product description

For use on clothing, tents, sleeping bags, and other outdoor gear, Sawyer Permethrin repels or kills disease-spreading ticks (Lyme disease), mosquitoes (West Nile and Zika viruses) and more than 55 other kinds of insects. Perfect for camping, backpacking, hunting, travel, backyard BBQs, picnics, and more, Permethrin insect and tick repellent adds an odorless layer of protection to shirts, jackets, pants, socks, shoes, sleeping bags, tents, netting, and other outdoor, camping, hunting, and travel gear. A University of Rhode Island study (2017) found that people wearing permethrin-treated shoes and socks were 73.6 times less likely to have a tick bite than those wearing untreated footwear. Using it on outdoor gear also helps reduce the mosquito population in your camp and prevents ticks from attaching to you. Permethrin spray bonds to fabric fibers for up to 6 weeks (42 days) of exposure to sun and air or 6 washings. Specially formulated not to stain or damage your clothing, other fabrics, gear, and equipment, it's odorless after drying and is as effective as 100% DEET. To apply, spray Permethrin directly onto clothing and gear with a slow sweeping motion, keeping the bottle about 6 to 8 inches away, and treating each side of the garment for about 30 seconds. The EPA recommends using 4.5 ounces of Permethrin to spray each outfit (consisting of shirt, pants, and socks). Maximize protection by pairing with Sawyer Picaridin topical repellent for the skin. Since 1984, Sawyer has used technological advancements to create products that keep you outdoors — from the backcountry to the backyard — including insect repellents for both skin and clothing, water filters for camping and emergencies, and sun protection.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this on my dog safley
Answer: The Scotts Wizz Handheld Spreader is designed to spread granular products. Unless the product to be spread is highly powdered or sticky it should spread fine. Several kinds of products are sold under the Preen label. I do not know which product you are interested in using, so I am speculating. The Preen Lawn care products should spread fine because they are designed for use with broadcast spreaders. The Garden Products are generally applied by hand using the sprinkle container, but both the Garden and the Organic Garden products are granular so they should both work unless they have gotten moist. One word of caution though, the recommended applications rates may need to be converted to dial setting by experiment.
Question: Does the 24oz bottle permethrin come with a sprayer
Answer: does not work well with sand like granules that r heavier than most. clogs gears and wears batteries down fast
Question: I thought this thing is odorless. However, I just bought it and the bag it came in has strong odor. Is it possible
Answer: The problem with NiMH rechargeables is that they are at most 1.2V each. Alkalines are 1.5V each, so trying to use NiMH will only give the device 5V (1.2V x 4) instead of 6V (1.5V x 4). Some devices won't operate at 5V, thinking that the alkalines batteries (really NiMH) are dead. There are several lithium AA batteries available on Amazon that should directly work. They are the type that have micro-usb charge ports on the side of them, and present regulated 1.5V (like alkaline) at their terminals, rather than the typical 3.2-3.6V of unmodified lithium cells. They have a decent capacity, and should easily last a spreading session on an average yard. I use these extensively in devices that take AA alkalines, with excellent results. They are pricey, but save money and waste in the long run. You probably already own the necessary charging infrastructure (a micro-usb cable and a wall-wart usb charger). You can also try to use two 3.2V lithium unmodified rechargeables along with two AA "dummy" cells. This will give 6.4V to the spreader instead of 6.0V from alkalines. I've used this method successfully in a trail camera that takes 8 AA batteries. I use four 3.2V rechargeable lithiums and four dummy AA cells. You will need to buy a charger for these, though. Amazon sells four packs of these batteries, bundled with a cheap charger.
Question: Is it safe to spray on skin
Answer: Unfortunately no the rock salt is just too heavy and large for it even at the 9 max opening setting and with fresh batteries it struggles and stops clogs up, maybe if you can find a finer ground rock salt possibly but the little motor seems underpowered it is not heavy duty, ended up using it as a big scoop and shaking it to spread the rock salt. It can handle lightweight things like grass seed very well and other small pellet fertilizers like milorganite. Don't think it would be good for any powders only small pellets. I'd skip this and look into buying a walk behind/push broadcast spreader for spreading rock salt.

Insect Repellent Treatment for Clothing, Gear, and Tents

For use on clothing, tents, sleeping bags, and other outdoor gear, Sawyer Permethrin Clothing Insect Repellent not only repels insects, it actually kills mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers, mites, and more than 55 other kinds of insects on contact. Odorless after drying, Permethrin will not stain or damage clothing, fabrics, plastics, finished surfaces, or any of your gear.

Use Permethrin on clothing by itself or with skin-applied repellents to create the ultimate protective, armor-like insect barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Permethrin is applied to clothing and outdoor gear material, bonding to the fabric fibers for up to 6 weeks or through 6 washings (whichever comes first). When a tick, mosquito, or other insect comes into contact with Permethrin, it absorbs a dose that will either repel or kill the insect. Applied to clothing, tents, outdoor furniture, or sleeping bags, Permethrin is very effective at reducing the mosquito population in your camping area and keeping ticks from attaching to you.

Sawyer Permethrin uses the same active ingredient found in hair shampoos for head lice. However, because your skin breaks down Permethrin within fifteen minutes of contact, it's not useful as a personal protection insect repellent when applied to the skin.

Permethrin-treated clothing and fabric should be your first line of defense, and it can be used in conjunction with a topical skin-based repellent such as Sawyer's Picaridin, MAXI DEET, and Ultra 30 products.

What Can I Treat with Permethrin?

In addition to clothing and accessories like hats and waders, Sawyer Permethrin Insect Repellent is ideal for treating backpacks, tents, camp furniture, hammocks, mosquito netting, luggage, and even bed sheets. Since mosquitoes are better hoppers than flyers, adding more Permethrin-treated landing surfaces around you will improve your protection.

Permethrin is compatible for use even on fragile fabrics such as silk, plus all synthetics and waterproof membrane fabrics (won't affect plastics or finishes). While Permethrin is safe and compatible with almost all fabrics, it has an easier time bonding to soft fabrics like cottons, wools, and synthetic blends.

User questions & answers

Question: Do you need to pick up the tubes each time you mow the grass? I would think that’s an issue
Answer: Hi, We provide every consumer with a 1-year. If you encounter any quality problems during this period, you can contact us via Amazon message center. We will solve it for you as soon as possible, thanks! Best Regards
Question: Stupid question, but what happens to these and their efficacy after the rain? Or after a week, or weeks, of rain? Do you pull and toss them
Answer: So what I did to wire my DRLs on my 98 was on the passenger side fender in the engine bay there’s a plug by the fuse box that doesn’t have an end it it. There’s 3 wires (colors vary) one of the wires has 12 volts when the ignition is on. I put a plug on that wire and ran another wire to the lights. Use a test light (has ground clamp and then you poke the end into the insulation) to figure out what wire it is. There’s only one wire that has a 12 volt status with the key on. With it off they should all have 0 volts.
Question: What is the % of permethrin
Answer: Hi, thanks for your question. Sorry , the turn signal of this headlight can not flash independently in one headlight, it only can flash both side together so far. If you have any question, please feel free to send email to us.
Question: Does this kill chiggers
Answer: Not sure on actual distance but I have them on my rx7 and they work Awesome
