11 best poison ivy over the counter treatments

Over-the-counter treatments for poison ivy are readily available and can help alleviate the discomfort and symptoms associated with contact dermatitis caused by poison ivy. Poison ivy is a plant that contains a substance called urushiol, which can cause skin rashes, itching, and blisters when it comes into contact with the skin. Here are some common over-the-counter treatments and remedies for poison ivy:

  1. Topical Creams and Lotions: There are several OTC creams and lotions that contain ingredients like hydrocortisone, calamine, or colloidal oatmeal. These products can help reduce itching, inflammation, and redness. They provide temporary relief and can be applied directly to the affected area.

  2. Antihistamines: Over-the-counter oral antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), can help relieve itching and reduce allergic reactions. These medications may cause drowsiness, so it's important to follow the dosing instructions and avoid activities that require alertness if you take them.

  3. Oatmeal Baths: Oatmeal bath products, which are available in various forms, can be added to bathwater. Soaking in an oatmeal bath can help soothe itchy skin and provide relief.

  4. Cool Compresses: Applying cool, wet compresses or ice packs to the affected area can help reduce itching and inflammation. Be sure to wrap the ice pack in a cloth to prevent direct contact with the skin.

  5. Astringents: Astringents like witch hazel can help dry out the blisters and reduce itching. They can be applied with a cotton ball or pad.

  6. Non-prescription Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with poison ivy rashes.

  7. Corticosteroid Creams: Some OTC corticosteroid creams, such as hydrocortisone, can be used to reduce itching and inflammation. These should be used as directed and not on open sores.

  8. Poison Ivy Cleansers: There are specialty cleansers designed to remove urushiol from the skin if applied soon after exposure. These products can help prevent the rash from developing or spreading.

  9. Barrier Creams: Before potential exposure to poison ivy, some people use barrier creams or lotions that create a protective layer on the skin to prevent urushiol from contacting the skin.

  10. Avoid Scratching: While not a traditional over-the-counter treatment, it's essential to avoid scratching the affected area to prevent infection and further irritation.

Remember that it's crucial to read and follow the instructions on over-the-counter products carefully. If your poison ivy rash is severe, covers a large area, or does not improve with OTC treatments, it's advisable to seek medical attention. Additionally, if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or a fever, seek immediate medical help.

User questions & answers

Question: is this for one 4 oz tube or two 4 oz tubes. one picture shows two tubes
Answer: Approximately 5x5 inches
Question: how often to apply
Answer: That is why I purchased these wipes, primarily to use on my dog. I think they work ok for that, but not a substitute for a full Technu bath if she has been running through the brush. I get a bad rash from PO so I am pretty vigilant about keeping her clean. Bottomline, these wipes work pretty well for smooth coat dogs, but for big exposures, giving a bath is the best bet.
Question: What is the difference between Tecnu Extreme and regular Tecnu
Answer: It is one box with 50 individually wrapped towelettes. I think the "case pack 5" might be a typo; they might have meant "case pack 50".
Question: How long does it take it clear up the rash
Answer: For my gardening shears and other small gardening equipment I have put rubber gloves on and rubbed some of the solution on the tools directly and then rinsed them off just as you would if you were washing your hands. For my tennis shoes I rub the solution on my shoes directly and scrub them with a brush and rinse them clean to dry. I am very allergic to poison ivy/oak and sumac vines, so I use rubber gloves for this type of cleaning. I don't put my shoes in the washing machine. I keep a separate pair of shoes for gardening and bought a small dish pan that I use to clean or soak my shoes in with this solution. I hope this helps you...

User questions & answers

Question: Can I mix this with water to make a spray
Answer: amazon won't ship to 11375 either due to "federal laws" according to chat, which is bogus since i bought the exact same amazon filled item in Oct'2015 without issue. guess i'm back to buying these tubes cheaper on ebay.
Question: How long should i leave the powder substance around the house to get rid of pest
Answer: No, it has a cap to keep the air from drying it out. Just don't cut the tip too large and be sure to put the cap on tight.
Question: Will boric acid work on centipedes? I have them all around the house and they get in as well
Answer: I use lids from tea, chocolate milk and sunnyd bottles. I put the gel in these. Then I have them in areas around the house. Mostly in the kitchen. Makes it easier to slide it in the back of the cabinet or under other furniture. They do eat it like this. Then I refill.
Question: Just want to clarify, how many oz. does each bottle contain? 16 ounces/1 pound in each bottle, or 8 ounces each
