12 best grub killer for lawns

Grub killer for lawns is a product used in lawn care and pest control to eliminate or prevent infestations of grubs, which are the larvae of certain types of beetles, including Japanese beetles and June beetles. Grubs can cause significant damage to lawns by feeding on the roots of grass, leading to brown patches and weakened turf. Here is some information about grub killer for lawns:

  1. Grub Identification: Before applying a grub killer, it's important to identify the presence of grubs in your lawn. Signs of a grub infestation include wilting or browning grass patches that can be easily lifted like a piece of loose carpet. You may also notice increased activity of animals like raccoons, skunks, or birds digging up your lawn to feed on grubs.

  2. Types of Grub Killers: There are two main types of grub killers:

    • Chemical Grub Killers: These products contain chemical insecticides that target and kill grubs. Common active ingredients include imidacloprid, chlorantraniliprole, and trichlorfon. They are typically applied as granules or liquid sprays.
    • Biological Grub Control: Some gardeners prefer using biological control methods, such as beneficial nematodes, which are microscopic worms that parasitize and kill grubs. These are considered a more environmentally friendly option.
  3. Timing: Applying grub killer at the right time is crucial for effective control. The best time to apply grub killer is typically in late spring to early summer or late summer to early fall when grubs are actively feeding near the soil surface.

  4. Application: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application carefully. Grub killers are typically spread evenly over the lawn and then watered in to ensure the product reaches the soil where the grubs are feeding.

  5. Preventative Treatment: Some homeowners opt for preventative grub control by applying grub killer in late spring or early summer before grubs become a problem. This can help prevent infestations in the first place.

  6. Lawn Maintenance: In addition to using grub killers, maintaining a healthy lawn through proper watering, mowing, and fertilizing can also help reduce the risk of grub infestations.

  7. Environmental Considerations: When using chemical grub killers, it's important to be mindful of environmental concerns. Follow the instructions on the product label, avoid over-application, and be aware of any local regulations regarding pesticide use.

Remember that the effectiveness of grub killers can vary depending on factors such as the type of product used, the severity of the grub infestation, and the timing of application. If you have a persistent grub problem in your lawn, you may want to consult with a professional lawn care service for more targeted treatment and advice.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use this in vegetable garden
Answer: You probably "could" use it to prevent/kill grubs (and other insects), but probably should not use it in your garden(s) if you intend to eat the veggies you grow, since it IS a chemical. Grubs typically won't eat most veggie or flower roots anyway as they tend to be a bit "hard" and "biter" for grubs liking, so you shouldn't even need to use any in your veggie or flower beds or garden areas, they do however enjoy grass roots as they tend to be much thinner, softer and "sweeter" to grubs, so use it only on your lawn/grass. You can also heavily apply this product and NOT worry about any lawn damage. I double the recommended spreader setting and it never negatively affects my lawn and I never get grubs anymore. Good Luck!
Question: will it harm earthworms
Answer: Grubex will not harm earthworms, nematodes or soil bacteria and does not pose a health risk to wildlife when applied according to label instructions.
Question: Can I use with crabgrass preventer
Answer: Yes, you can apply at the same time, I have for years! I apply this product each year 7 to 10 days after the LAST frost (usually early to mid March in my area of NYC), that way the soil has started to soften up and the products can get down and do their job, at the same time I apply a "Scotts" brand Crabgrass Pre-Emergent (which only kills/prevents SOME weed types) and so I also throw down a broader spectrum weed n feed to combat most/all other types of weeds and I also get a lawn food and a soil food down as well and I always overseed heavily each fall. Since figuring out my lawn and soil, what it needs and what works best for me, I have not had any grub or carbgrass issues in about 12 years. Good Luck
Question: Does this kill Vine Weevil grubs? Thank you
Answer: GrubEx1 will control the grub larvae of following insects: Japanese beetles, Asiatic garden beetles, Black turfgrass ataenius, Aphodius spp., European chafers, Green June beetles, May/June beetles, Northern masked chafers, Oriental beetles, Southern masked chafers, Caterpillars (including Armyworms, Cutworms, Sod websorms), Billbug grubs and crane fly larvae (including European Crane Flies). It will also suppress chinchbugs.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used under fruit trees ie. Apple, pears, blueberries etc?? I need to be 100% sure and would like responses fro those whom are certain
Answer: I always want to give good information on this poisen. I can not answer your question. I use Bayer poisen for the yard and around the headges and for flea controll. I contacted Bayer about useing it during the hot summer months in Fl when the tempature reaches above 90*; Bayer informed me that it stops killing insects above 90*. For fruit trees you need to call their 800 # and ask them or your county Agracultrial Agent. Have a safe growing season. Dallas
Question: Will this work in flower beds with weed fabric and ceder mulch on top? Worried it won't get down to the grubs
Answer: This substance is a solvent. it will eventually dissolve and absolve in ground, so it would work when spread over mulch.
Question: does this kill chiggers? the normal insect killers won't work because they're arachnids, but noticed it does kill spiders and ticks
Answer: Yes it specifically lists chiggers as a pest it will control. Thanks for considering your purchase from Amazon through AgCareDirect.
Question: will this kill honeybees
Answer: Thats a good QUESTION. I dont know I would call Bayer and talk to them. Also make sure you read the MSDS INFORMATION and the instructions on how to speead it. Bayer is good for killing fleas and ticks. It lasts three months and use it untill the out door temps hit 90* or above. I live in Jax Fl. I use a comertial pest controll service year round and I have them spray for fleas during the 90* hot summer months. Comertial liquid poisen kills the fleas and ticks above 90*. I either just dump the bag in my spreader or sometimes use rubber gloves and speead it around the foundation of my house to kill roaches before they have a chance to get in. Also, BAYER does not kill anything if you use it during the hot days of summer when the tempature is above 90*. I called Bayer and read it on the MSDS sheet. Hope I helped you out. I was a Hamat Tech when I was a Firefighter now I am retired. Have a good spring.

Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer Products

There’s an army of insects out there looking for the next lawn or garden to feast on. Don’t let them turn the fruits of your labor into an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer products are formulated for broad-spectrum control of outdoor insects, whether you’re controlling pests in your lawn, garden or landscape. They even take care of bugs below ground, leaving plant-munching insects with nowhere to hide.

How do you know if you have insect damage?

In the heat of summer, we all have brown patches in our lawns. If it’s irregular or mottled, the browning could be a symptom of lawn pests. To test, pick a spot in the affected area of your lawn and spread the grass blades so the surface roots are visible – this will give you a good view of turf-feeding bugs. If the browning is fairly uniform over your entire lawn, it’s most likely caused by hot and dry weather.

Aphids

These green, yellow, brown, red or black pear-shaped insects with long legs and antennae aren’t easily disturbed. They suck plant juices out of the leaves, stems or roots of plants.

Ticks

In the same family as scorpions and spiders, these tiny arachnids are blood-feeding parasites found in tall grass. They carry infections such as Lyme disease, and females inflate from flat insects to oval shape after feeding.

Fleas

Found primarily on pets, fleas are just 3/16 inch long, but they carry several diseases, including typhus, bubonic plague and tapeworm. They usually appear in clusters of two or three on human ankles or legs or anywhere on pets.

Japanese beetles

A constant source of aggravation for gardeners, Japanese

beetles eat 300 types of trees and plants. Metallic green with coppery brown wing covers, these 3/8 inch-long creatures are often found around homes and gardens, attacking flowers, fruits and lawns.

Grub control

The tough lawn grub can cause real damage to your lawn and landscape. Whitish and c-shaped, grubs feed on grass roots, making lawns incapable of drawing necessary water and nutrients from the soil. Grubs are highly active during the summer – adult females generally lay their eggs in the soil during July, and the newly hatched grubs begin to feed on turf roots in early August, causing grass to die off in irregular patches.

For grub control, use Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer products in late spring, then again in the fall if a second generation appears.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this any time of year? It's February and i see grubs below the surface of the ground
Answer: If you are seeing damage to grasses due to actively feeding grubs and temperatures are above 50 degrees you may apply. When temperatures are cooler grubs go dormant and stop actively feeding. The insecticide does have to be consumed by the grubs for the product to be effective.
Question: Will this work for Japanese Beetle grubs
Answer: Hi Jess! Yes, this product will control all white grubs including Japanese Beetle larvae.
Question: Can you reseed after applying grub killer
Answer: You will have to ask the nursery. I used it on established sod with no ill effects.
Question: Is this safe to put in garden
Answer: As far as I know .Check directions on the bag for any warnings. O only used it around evergreen shrubs.

User questions & answers

Question: We seem to have a grub infestation and animals are ripping up the grass to get at the grubs -- is it too late in the season to apply your product
Answer: I didn't read the package (no gone) to find out the best time of year to apply the stuff, I simply dispatched it using a lawn spreader according to the application chart on the bag. To answer your question, I'd have to say that as long as the ground hasn't yet froze solid, and liquid rain is still likely in the upcoming weather forecasts, then the product should still be effective. In my case, I was declaring war on a major infestation of opossums who's tunneling activities were under-mining the shed and beginning to cause large sink holes in our yard and driveway. One person had already fallen through a thin section of ground in the yard - into a hole that was 4 feet deep, with 20" - 24" inch tunnels going in both directions underground! I'd STILL like to know where the heck all that dirt goes, as no tell-tale signs such as mounds of soil were ever found on the premises! While researching this problem, I learned that grub worm are one of their favorite foods, and that promotes such tunneling activity in an area that contains such a food source. That's why I bought the grub killer in the first place. What I can say for sure is that, within 3 days after applying the stuff, 95% of my entire lawn was surprisingly dead! I assume that since what little vegetation still remaining was sparse blades of soft thin regular grass, it seems that every other living growing thing in the lawn was killed, presumably all weeds, crab-grass, wire-grass, etc. I'd also have to say that such devastation to the roots of the undesired plants must not have ben to healthy fore the grubs either. In addition to applying the grub killer, we also took other steps before applying the grub killer, including: filling tunnel entrances with crushed glass, and using kill traps to kill as many opossums as possible. In any event, there has been no signs of opossums, nor any new tunneling activity on the property since the grub killer was applied, but that could likely also be the combined results of a culmination of steps that were taken. I guess the real verdict won't come in until next spring, when we see if that pest problem resumes. Meanwhile, no one else has fallen through the ground around here, and we seem to have stopped it before any cars got eaten up in the driveway! In your case (if it were me), I'd still give it a shot, so long as water can still cause the chemicals to soon saturate the root level of the soil. Good Luck!
Question: Does this kill weevils that eat agave plants
Answer: Unfortunately, this product is not listed for the control of weevils. We would recommend applying our 3 in 1 Insect, Disease, & Mite control spray for that particular insect. You may apply every 7-14 days as needed for an active infestation.
Question: How many sq feet for 1 bag
Answer: Approximately 5000. Seems high priced but what isn't these days. 2nd year I have used it ..... No complaints
Question: What is the expiration date on the packages currently for sale
Answer: There is no exp date

User questions & answers

Question: how is it applied
Answer: I applied by hand using a cup with wholes. But you can use a handheld spreader or a push spreader. What ever you use to put fertilizer down with.
Question: when is best time of year to apply
Answer: An easy way to remember: Apply in July when the beetles fly.
Question: Doesn't mention if/when small pets can be on the lawn. Does it say anywhere on the actual package
Answer: Eric's answer is nonsense. The active ingredient in this pesticide is imidacloprid. According to published testing at the Michigan State Extension Service, Cornell University et al, the instructions to apply imidacloprid to a lawn require you to water-in the product with a half inch of water. Once the lawn then dries after the watering it is safe for children and pests. Do your own query, that data is widely published. In fact, to make the point even more clearly, imidacloprid is approved by the EPA to be applied directly onto dogs over 7 weeks old as a flea treatment. Why people like Eric make their ridiculous postings is beyond me.
Question: This thing smells pretty evil. I want grubs to die but I feel the worse for my earthworms. Will this kill earthworms in the soil
Answer: As I said in my review, in addition to the grubs, it killed the earthworms in my lawn. It killed about a dozen worms per 10-square feet of turf.

User questions & answers

Question: How is it applied
Answer: Depending in the size of the area you want to treat, you could spread it by hand or in a seed spreader. I use a cheap handheld seed broadcaster. Directions for settings are in the package.
Question: Is this product safe for lawns that pets use
Answer: Yes
Question: will this kill earth worms
Answer: We have used it several times without damage to the worms just the grub.
Question: what to use when grubs are big and white like the one on the bag? i have St. Augustine Seville grass.. tried Grubx and they're still there
Answer: Google the Michigan State University grub control information pages. They spell out exactly what products to use, when and why, and the products that don't work. There are two kinds of treatment, for before and after they emerge into the white grubs pictured on the bag. The information will save you a lot of money and work, and protect your lawn. Good Luck.

User questions & answers

Question: This says the box, so do you have to buy a box plus the worms
Answer: No , the box comes with 5 pouches. Inside each pouch is two worms. We break each worm in half and push inside mole holes with a small stick. Works best if you use gloves as to avoid human sent on worms. This product works.
Question: I have placed this over two active tunnels, when the mole goes by the trap flips up, 3x now. What am i doing wrong
Answer: When i first started using these i had the same problem. I found that packing down about 8" of the run before setting the trap helps. It forces the mole to push more dirt and i havent missed one since.
Question: Has anyone had any luck using this product for gophers
Answer: Yes, Ive used it a lot. Find a new mound, use a rod just bigger than the worm and try to make one hole. You can feel the ground give when you’re in the track. Ware gloves to keep human smell off worm. Cut in half and insert dropping it in. I cover hole with a little rock to seal. but do not press it down .
Question: I was asking how far apart for 15 foot wide tunnel
Answer: If you have a 15 foot-wide tunnel in your yard, this product will not be effective. You should instead call the Department of Homeland Security, as someone is smuggling truckloads of something under your yard.

Identify Surface Runways

Look for brown, grassless streaks on a lawn that are created when moles tunnel below. Carefully poke a hole in the top of the surface runway with your index finger. Be sure to not collapse the pile or cover up the hole. Mark the hole with a small stick. Repeat with several runway locations. Wait 48 - 72 hours and then check holes to see if they have been sealed. If they have, they are active and can be baited. Runways that have had holes resealed within 72 hours should be baited.

Bait Only Active Runways

Poke a hole 3 to 5 feet on either side of the assessment hole and place one worm bait down each hole. Push the worm as far down as you can. Make sure each worm is sitting on the floor of the runway. Reseal the runway with dirt to keep out any light and pinch hole closed or cover it with a piece of sod or small rock.

Check for Mole Activity

Wait 5 to 7 days, then check for mole activity using the same process in Step 1. If the holes stay open for 48 - 72 hours, the mole has likely traveled the runway and eaten the bait.

Detection

A clue that you might have a mole problem is your lawn will have raised brown, grassless streaks which are created when moles tunnel below. The other thing to look for are 'mole hills' which are seen above ground and are created when the mole pushes soil and debris to the surface.

Mechanical Trap

This non-toxic option provides effective kill without use of baits. It holds the mole for proof of kill.

Repellents

Spread or spray over the lawn as directed and you’ll discover that when Tomcat moves in – moles move out.

Baits – Mole Killers

Moles eat bait and die underground.

User questions & answers

Question: How long do have to wait to mow again after applying duocide
Answer: Most granular products fall into the thatch layer so if it hasn’t been watered in you likely won’t suck up many of the granular. I would recommend lightly watering in after you apply which allows the granuals to disperse.
Question: Why can't this Product be shipped to California
Answer: Ask your state and local government. It probably has to do with their restrictions.
Question: They are destroying my tangerine plants. Applying it 2 ft away won't help. If there are no fruits, can it be applied closer to the root
Answer: Ues
Question: Is it safe to use at the same time I put down pre-emergent
Answer: I can’t answer that; I sprayed my pre-emergent back in February and I didn’t didnt put the Andersons Duocide Lawn Insecticide until April. I do suggest watching the short video on lightly watering and then 30 minutes later repeat to expedite its absorbing into the ground. I did apply other fertilizers etc. prior to the insecticide though. It does break down very easily, so I would say if the insecticide was put down and watered into the ground as recommended then I wouldn’t think that there would be a problem

Eliminate Pests Above and Below the Surface

The Andersons DuoCide is a professional-grade, curative lawn insect control. Fast acting DuoCide eliminates more than 50 common lawn pests, including grubs, ticks, fire ants and fleas. With a unique formula containing both bifenthrin and carbaryl, DuoCide eliminates lawn pests above and below the soil surface with a single application.

DuoCide also features The Andersons patented Dispersible Granule (DG) Technology, which makes spreading easier and increases effectiveness. With DG Technology, DuoCide granules break down upon contact with water and disperse into thousands of microparticles that move through the turf canopy and into the soil for maximum performance.

Applying DuoCide

Application rates range from 2-8 lbs/1000 sq ft and vary based on pest(s) to be controlled. See the chart below for more detail.

Proper application timing depends on pest(s) to be controlled. For surface pests (ants, spiders, billbugs, chinch bugs, etc.), treat when pests or turf damage symptoms first appear. For subsurface pests (white grubs, june beetles, etc.), apply 10-14 days after egg-laying activity and/or when turf damage is first noticed. See DuoCide label for complete detail.

Irrigation Required

DuoCide must be watered in immediately after application. Upon contact with water, DuoCide granules will disperse into thousands of microparticles, moving the active ingredients through the turf canopy and into the soil. Wait until watering is complete and the area has dried before allowing pets or people to reenter.
