12 best combat ant poisons
Combat is a brand that produces ant poisons and other pest control products. Their ant baits and poisons are designed to help homeowners and gardeners effectively deal with ant infestations. Here's what you need to know about Combat ant poisons:
Ant Bait Stations: Combat offers ant bait stations that contain a poisoned bait. These bait stations are typically small, plastic containers with bait inside. They are designed to attract ants with the sweet or protein-based bait.
Active Ingredient: The active ingredient in Combat ant baits is often a slow-acting toxic substance that the ants carry back to their nest. This approach is known as "bait transfer" and is effective in targeting the entire ant colony, including the queen.
Kills the Colony: Combat ant poisons are formulated to disrupt the ant colony's reproductive cycle by eliminating the queen. When worker ants bring the bait back to the nest, it is shared among the colony members, eventually leading to the death of the queen and colony collapse.
Easy to Use: Combat ant bait stations are user-friendly and require no mixing or special equipment. Simply place the bait stations in areas where you've observed ant activity.
Indoor and Outdoor Use: Combat ant poisons can be used both indoors and outdoors, depending on the product. This versatility allows you to address ant infestations in various areas of your home and garden.
Effectiveness: The effectiveness of Combat ant poisons may vary depending on the ant species and the severity of the infestation. It may take some time to see results as the bait works its way through the colony.
Safety: When using Combat ant baits, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Keep them out of reach of children and pets, and avoid direct contact with the bait.
Residual Protection: Some Combat products offer residual protection, meaning they continue to work for an extended period, preventing future ant infestations.
Multiple Formulations: Combat may offer different formulations for specific ant species or situations, such as indoor or outdoor infestations.
Precautions: While Combat ant baits are generally considered safe for use, it's important to take precautions to prevent accidental ingestion by pets or wildlife. Placing the bait stations in areas inaccessible to non-target animals can help mitigate this risk.
Environmental Impact: Combat ant baits are designed to be targeted, which can reduce the environmental impact compared to broad-spectrum insecticides. However, it's essential to dispose of empty bait stations responsibly.
In summary, Combat ant poisons are an effective tool for controlling ant infestations. They use bait stations to attract and poison ants, targeting the entire colony, including the queen. When used according to the instructions, Combat ant poisons can be a valuable component of pest control efforts in both indoor and outdoor settings.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this kill all species of ants |
Answer: | Presumably (but not verified scientifically) YES as it kills the Pharaoh ants which ARE established as the toughest common household ant species to kill. |
Question: | Can I dillute and spray this using a bottle sprayer (on ant trails going up some tree trunks |
Answer: | I don't know if it can be diluted and sprayed, but that is unnecessary regardless. All you need do is deposit some of the gel from the syringe in a few spots along the ant's trail, at the base of the tree and higher (it should stick to the bark). The ants will be all over it. They'll bring it back to their nest for the queen. Give it a few days, and you'll be pleased with the results! |
Question: | What is the active ingredient? What is the character of the attractant: sweet, protein, other |
Answer: | According to information on previous review the active ingredient is Fipronil. According to Wikipedia "It is a slow acting poison. When used as bait, it allows the poisoned insect time to return to the colony or harborage. In cockroaches, the feces and carcass can contain sufficient residual pesticide to kill others in the same nesting site. In ants, the sharing of the bait among colony members assists in the spreading of the poison throughout the colony. With the cascading effect, the projected kill rate is about 95% in three days for ants and cockroaches. Fipronil serves as a good bait toxin not only because of its slow action, but also because most, if not all, of the target insects do not find it offensive or repulsive." Regarding whether the attractant is "sweet" or "protein" -- I really don't know; however, the ants that we killed had been attracted to sweet thing. |
Question: | Does it kill carpenter ants |

User questions & answers
Question: | Ants are entering my son’s room near the ceiling. What is the consistency of this product? Will it drip if I apply it to the ceiling corners |
Answer: | The product has a gel like consistency but may also have some liquid when applied. The gel will run sometimes when applied to walls but this provides more bait for the ants. Do not disturb the ants while they swarm the bait. |
Question: | Does it have a strong odor? Thanks for your time |
Answer: | Hi! No---it has no odor that I've noticed, and you use very little at a time. You need to put it in the path of the ants and just little dabs at a time. It's a pretty thick gel so it sticks up around the ceilings, under a countertop edge, etc... just keep it away from pets and kids! |
Question: | Is this for sugar ants or protein ants |
Answer: | Sugar - says right in the description - The sugar-based gel matrix of Optigard ant gel bait is highly attractive to ants, which makes it extremely effective. |
Question: | if you used terro how does this compare |
Answer: | I have used Terro and I have found Optigard to be considerable more effective. What has worked well for me is to identify where the ants are coming from, and where their trails are. I then place a bead of about 1/2 inch, or so, near the entrance and on the trails. (If you are concerned about about pets or children touching the gel you might cut one inch pieces of drinking straws and put the bead of gel inside those) The ants are quickly attracted to the gel and you need to leave it alone. The ants will take the gel back to the nest and use it to feed the queen and the young ants. They will quickly die (a couple of days) and once the life cycle of ants is relatively short a dead queen means ne new ants. I've had really good results doing this. |

A Clear Solution For Ant Control
It is estimated there are up to 10,000 trillion ants on earth, which means there are trillions of pest problems you could encounter around your property. Optigard ant gel bait from Syngenta Professional Pest Management offers effective control of a broad range of ants so you can help reduce the number of ants you face.
Optigard ant gel bait is known for its clear gel formulation that ants are attracted to and is easy for them to consume. It has proven to be accepted and palatable to a wide variety of ants. The powerful active ingredient, thiamethoxam, controls workers, brood and queens to ensure full colony elimination.
Optigard ant gel bait Profile
▸ Broad-spectrum control of ants, including Argentine, carpenter, odorous house, ghost and other ant species
▸ Non-repellent and transferable; knocks out workers, brood and queens
▸ Remains palatable for at least 14 days after baiting (indoors and outdoors)
▸ Non-staining and colorless formulation with little to no odor
▸ Packaged in a ready-to-use, 30-gram syringe with plunger for easy application
With its effective mode of action, durable formulation and excellent acceptance among ants, you can trust Optigard ant gel bait to offer the control you need to help provide a long-lasting, ant-free environment for your customers.
The Perfect Formula for Ant Elimination
The sugar-based gel matrix of Optigard ant gel bait is highly attractive to ants, which makes it extremely effective. Other baits can be too gooey, which prevents ants from transporting them back to the colony. However, the consistency of Optigard makes it easy for ants to carry to the colony and share with nestmates.
Optigard ant gel bait is also known for its durability under harsh environmental conditions. The formulation resists degradation caused by high temperatures and can retain its palatability for more than two weeks. Ants will continue to feed on Optigard ant gel bait even if the product dries out over time and the active ingredient becomes concentrated. This long-lasting effect reduces the chance of call backs and requires fewer applications.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can/should I put these behind the kick plate under my cabinets |
Answer: | Hello, Thank you for your question. Our tablets will absolutely work on oriental roaches. Spiders, however, are a different story. I would recommend our 24oz Spider Killer liquid spray specifically for spiders or our Spider Glue Traps. Unfortunately, they are not attracted to the tablets. Best, John |
Question: | If I have a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom kind of large home... will this be enough? or should I buy 2 packs |
Answer: | This listing says 4oz with 145 tablets, yet the description says ."at least 95 tablets",Sold by + shipped by AMAZON. There is another seller(not amazon but shipped by amazon) for a few cents more with a 6oz box with 145 tablets. Can anyone explain this enigma? |
Question: | What do we mean by "small" roaches? As is 1 in, 1/2 in or even smaller than that? The few I am seeing are no more than 1 inch in length. Will it work |
Answer: | Yes you can, they are like tablets and they don't fall apart. Roaches eat them go back to where ever and die |
Question: | Does anyone know if it can be used pet-safe? (I have a quite food-driven cat |
Answer: | I use them on my screened in porch in a tropical area and they do work but, I change them more frequently then those on the inside. THESE TABLETS WORK VERY WELL!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long can you leave the gel on the cracks before needing to clean/wipe it away |
Answer: | If you have pets you do not treat their food or water. You put Advion where roaches are most likely to travel. Put it where they poop also. I put it under the fridge and the stove, in cracks and crevices where they hide. |
Question: | Can you use this on kitchen counters |
Answer: | No, the product is excellent as long as is fresh. I purchase a 4 tube pk. in January of 2019 and I was not able to eradicate the problem because of the leftover gel wouldn't work, not even 3 months later. Make sure is fresh stock. I have to buy again and I am looking between sellers to see if one put expiration dates. The product is really good works well it is just the shelf life is short. |
Question: | Are the disk openings large enough for large cockroaches (American and/or Oriental species |
Answer: | Currently this product is 0.6% indoxacarb and the Advion Ant Gel is only at 0.05% indoxacarb. This has 12 times more indoxacarb than the ant product. If the ants find this palatable they will eat it. Some ants like carbohydrates like roaches do, so they they will probably eat this. I would not put the weaker ant stuff out with a roach infestation, because it will not kill them and instead they will get more resistant to indoxacarb. |
Question: | How long until roaches die |
Answer: | I reapply once every year usually. But I’ve been known to do every six months as well. It all depends on how bad you have it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why is the pricing so weird? It's actually 2x more in bulk! Did someone make a mistake? Sorry for the rhetorical question, silly vendor person |
Answer: | It has to do with who the actual "seller" is. If you select a quantity of "1", in this case, it is "sold and fulfilled" by Amazon. If you select a quantity of "2" it is "sold" by another company while still being "fulfilled" by Amazon. Yes, both quantities are, as of this writing, "fulfilled" by Amazon but that just tells you that Amazon stores, packages, and ships both items(1 and 2 packs) even though there are, in reality, two different "sellers". If you click back and forth on the quantity selector you'll see the "sold by" name change. Look just under the price after you switch. The seller of the 2 pack sets the price whereas the seller of the 1 pack(Amazon) sets its own price. I'm sure Amazon buys the 1 pack in very large quantities and, therefore, can get a bigger discount, per piece, than the other "seller" can get, per piece, for the 2-pack. |
Question: | How safe is this product in the kitchen? We have a few ants crawling around our kitchen sink and would like to place one of these bait stations on our kitchen counter. Bad idea? Thanks |
Answer: | This is a generally safe product according to my research. Make sure to read the packaging and follow direction. (FOR INDOOR USE READ THE FOLLOWING) One lesson I learned the hard way: the sugary syrup is irresistible to ants, even though it is laced with poison. This means when you use Tarro, you're actually providing access to free food! The poison will work on the ants and it takes about 18-24 hours to kill them... but as you wait after 24 hours, Tarro syrup will attract other thriving colonies into your home. They'll follow the same rich trails laid behind by the previous colony and even scavenge on the carcases of the previously fallen colony. This cycle will continue, attracting ants from far away reaches and allowing them to setup massive colonies within your home. This is especially true with Argentine ants (available throughout the world), which form massive colonies with multiple queens - a trait unique to this type of ant, whereas others will battle for territory. So the lesson learned is simple... once the initial 1 or 2 swarms die down, remove all baits and all forms of food from open spaces in your home; patch up all openings in walls, baseboards, cracks around windows, etc; apply perimeter pesticide around your home; and look for signs of wandering ants in the next week. If you see more ants then you missed an opening and already have an established colony in your wall.... repeat!! Just don't leave out Tarro and keep replenishing, especially in the case of Argentine ants. |
Question: | Is this safe to have around pets? I have a curious cat |
Answer: | I'd say no. My cat knocked one of these over once and licked the syrup. She was fine but it wasn't a fun afternoon (trip to the vet, etc.). Terro sells a version of this that encloses the bait in plastic and has sticky squares to attach them to the floor, counter, or other surfaces. I use those instead now. |
Question: | I have a baby in the house and I would like to use this product to kill ants in my house. Any precautions you suggest before I use this product |
Answer: | The ant trails at my house sometimes go from the floor to the ceiling. I turn the bait so that the liquid will not run out and use Scotch tape to tape it to the wall next to the ant trail. I tape the bait high enough that babies and grand children cannot get to it. It usually takes two days for the ants to disappear. Then three days after they disappear, they return to the trap. Another two days and they disappear again. The second time they disappear is usually the last time I see them at that location. |

TERRO Liquid Ant Baits
Ants can be a problem anywhere – in the home, at work and everywhere in between. To kill common household ants, place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits in areas where they attract foraging ants that take the bait back to the nest. As the bait circulates through the colony, it kills the ants you see and the ones you don’t. The new and improved snap-off tab makes the stations easy to use. To open the bait, hold the station vertically and twist the tab. This opens up the station and allows ants to access the bait. Place the entire station on a flat surface, keeping the ant bait inside the station. Plus, the closed bait stations prevent the bait from drying out to provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Note: complete control may take up to two weeks.
How Liquid Ant Bait Works
Since this is a bait, initially you will see more ants – but don’t worry, this is a good thing. Why? As ants forage for food, they are easily attracted to the sweet, sugary liquid inside the bait stations. After finding the bait, worker ants consume it and leave behind a pheromone trail leading back to the colony. This trail lets other worker ants know where the newly discovered food supply is. This is why you will see more ants in the beginning.
Meanwhile, the active ingredient, Borax, is slowly interfering with the ant’s digestive system, ultimately killing it, but leaving enough time for the ant to go back and share the dose with the rest of the colony. This slow kill is necessary so that foraging ants can make several trips to the bait. The communal nature of an ant colony allows the bait to be spread to hundreds, if not thousands, of individual ants.
How to Use Liquid Ant Baits
TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are very easy to use. Before placing the bait stations, be sure to remove other sources of food, such as crumbs, sugar and grease spots to prevent attracting ants elsewhere. Do not place bait where you’ve already sprayed insecticides, as the pests may avoid the bait stations.
- Hold the bait station firmly with bait pack tab facing up. Break off the tab being careful not to spill the bait.
- Place the bait station label side up on a flat surface near signs of ants. Place additional bait stations anywhere they may enter your home. For best results, use all bait stations to ensure a sufficient supply for the ants.
- Monitor placements regularly, but do not interfere with the pests or bait stations. Replace when bait is depleted. Complete control may take up to two weeks.
- Once ants are controlled, replace the baits every 3 months to keep them from returning.
