10 best carpenter ant killers
Carpenter ant killers are products designed to effectively eliminate carpenter ants, which are destructive pests that can cause damage to wooden structures. These ant killers come in various forms, including baits, sprays, and granules, and are typically categorized as pest control products. Here are some key points about carpenter ant killers:
Types of Products:
- Baits: Carpenter ant bait products are designed to attract ants and then deliver a toxic substance back to the ant colony. The ants share the bait with their nestmates, eventually leading to the colony's demise.
- Sprays: Carpenter ant sprays are designed for direct application to ant trails, nests, or infested areas. They often contain insecticides that kill ants upon contact.
- Granules: Granular carpenter ant killers can be spread around the perimeter of a structure or in areas where ants are active. Ants pick up the granules and carry them back to their nest, where they can eliminate the colony.
Active Ingredients:
- Carpenter ant killers may contain various active ingredients, such as pyrethroids, pyrethrins, or other insecticides. The choice of active ingredient may vary depending on the product's effectiveness and safety.
Application:
- The application method for carpenter ant killers depends on the product type. Baits are typically placed near ant trails or where ants are active. Sprays are applied directly to ants or their nesting sites, while granules are spread in the vicinity of the ant activity.
Effectiveness:
- The effectiveness of a carpenter ant killer depends on various factors, including the product's active ingredients, the size of the ant colony, and the accuracy of application. It may take some time to completely eliminate a carpenter ant infestation.
Safety:
- When using carpenter ant killers, it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure safe and effective application. Some products may be toxic to humans and pets, so precautions should be taken.
Prevention:
- To prevent future carpenter ant infestations, it's essential to address any moisture problems, repair damaged wood, and seal entry points around the home. Regular maintenance and keeping the environment less attractive to ants can help deter infestations.
Professional Pest Control: In severe infestations or when DIY methods prove ineffective, it may be necessary to consult a professional pest control service to assess and treat the carpenter ant problem.
Carpenter ant killers can be an effective tool in managing and eliminating carpenter ant infestations. However, choosing the right product and applying it correctly are crucial for success.Always exercise caution when handling and using pest control products, and consider seeking professional assistance for severe infestations.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have the colony under the kitchen cabinet on top of the refrigerator where do I apply the bait? I am desperate |
Answer: | I used it in small amounts all around, not in a perimeter line. I still have some left. I guess you can make 5 inches lines all around or something similar. Good luck. |
Question: | what is the shelf life of this product |
Answer: | They wouldn't carry it away from the nest. They would take it to the nest. Otherwise they wouldn't touch it. |
Question: | Barlett Tree service suggested this product to pour on the ground around a tree to kill carpenter ants in the tree. Do you think this would work |
Answer: | It is Protein. It is highly recommended to also use Maxforce FC Carpenter Bait Gel which is a sugar bait. You should always give ants a choice as they may be in the mood for either a protein (granule) or a sugar (gel) bait. |
Question: | Is this a sweet bait? Protein? Fat? All |
Answer: | Yes it can be applied inside and outside, sunlight not an issue, should get picked up pretty quickly, but yes easy to clean, do not over apply. |

To kill common household ants, simply place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits stations near indoor areas where ants are spotted. Ants enter the trap, consume the liquid ant bait and return to the nest where they pass on the bait to the rest of the colony. TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are specifically formulated to allow worker ants to consume the product and survive long enough to carry the liquid back to the nest and deliver a dose to the rest of the colony . The liquid ant bait stations prevent the bait from drying out and provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Monitor the baits regularly for activity, but do not interfere with the ants or baits. Replace with additional baits when the first set is depleted. Depending on the size of the ant infestation, complete control may take up to two weeks.
- 12 bait stations included
- Kills all common household ants
- Pre-filled, ready-to-use bait stations
- Patented design prevents bait from drying out
- Attracts ants fast
- Contains Borax
- Place baits near ant trails or where ants are numerous
- Use all six baits to ensure sufficient supply for the ants
User questions & answers
Question: | Why is the pricing so weird? It's actually 2x more in bulk! Did someone make a mistake? Sorry for the rhetorical question, silly vendor person |
Answer: | It has to do with who the actual "seller" is. If you select a quantity of "1", in this case, it is "sold and fulfilled" by Amazon. If you select a quantity of "2" it is "sold" by another company while still being "fulfilled" by Amazon. Yes, both quantities are, as of this writing, "fulfilled" by Amazon but that just tells you that Amazon stores, packages, and ships both items(1 and 2 packs) even though there are, in reality, two different "sellers". If you click back and forth on the quantity selector you'll see the "sold by" name change. Look just under the price after you switch. The seller of the 2 pack sets the price whereas the seller of the 1 pack(Amazon) sets its own price. I'm sure Amazon buys the 1 pack in very large quantities and, therefore, can get a bigger discount, per piece, than the other "seller" can get, per piece, for the 2-pack. |
Question: | How safe is this product in the kitchen? We have a few ants crawling around our kitchen sink and would like to place one of these bait stations on our kitchen counter. Bad idea? Thanks |
Answer: | This is a generally safe product according to my research. Make sure to read the packaging and follow direction. (FOR INDOOR USE READ THE FOLLOWING) One lesson I learned the hard way: the sugary syrup is irresistible to ants, even though it is laced with poison. This means when you use Tarro, you're actually providing access to free food! The poison will work on the ants and it takes about 18-24 hours to kill them... but as you wait after 24 hours, Tarro syrup will attract other thriving colonies into your home. They'll follow the same rich trails laid behind by the previous colony and even scavenge on the carcases of the previously fallen colony. This cycle will continue, attracting ants from far away reaches and allowing them to setup massive colonies within your home. This is especially true with Argentine ants (available throughout the world), which form massive colonies with multiple queens - a trait unique to this type of ant, whereas others will battle for territory. So the lesson learned is simple... once the initial 1 or 2 swarms die down, remove all baits and all forms of food from open spaces in your home; patch up all openings in walls, baseboards, cracks around windows, etc; apply perimeter pesticide around your home; and look for signs of wandering ants in the next week. If you see more ants then you missed an opening and already have an established colony in your wall.... repeat!! Just don't leave out Tarro and keep replenishing, especially in the case of Argentine ants. |
Question: | Is this safe to have around pets? I have a curious cat |
Answer: | I'd say no. My cat knocked one of these over once and licked the syrup. She was fine but it wasn't a fun afternoon (trip to the vet, etc.). Terro sells a version of this that encloses the bait in plastic and has sticky squares to attach them to the floor, counter, or other surfaces. I use those instead now. |
Question: | I have a baby in the house and I would like to use this product to kill ants in my house. Any precautions you suggest before I use this product |
Answer: | The ant trails at my house sometimes go from the floor to the ceiling. I turn the bait so that the liquid will not run out and use Scotch tape to tape it to the wall next to the ant trail. I tape the bait high enough that babies and grand children cannot get to it. It usually takes two days for the ants to disappear. Then three days after they disappear, they return to the trap. Another two days and they disappear again. The second time they disappear is usually the last time I see them at that location. |

TERRO Liquid Ant Baits
Ants can be a problem anywhere – in the home, at work and everywhere in between. To kill common household ants, place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits in areas where they attract foraging ants that take the bait back to the nest. As the bait circulates through the colony, it kills the ants you see and the ones you don’t. The new and improved snap-off tab makes the stations easy to use. To open the bait, hold the station vertically and twist the tab. This opens up the station and allows ants to access the bait. Place the entire station on a flat surface, keeping the ant bait inside the station. Plus, the closed bait stations prevent the bait from drying out to provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Note: complete control may take up to two weeks.
How Liquid Ant Bait Works
Since this is a bait, initially you will see more ants – but don’t worry, this is a good thing. Why? As ants forage for food, they are easily attracted to the sweet, sugary liquid inside the bait stations. After finding the bait, worker ants consume it and leave behind a pheromone trail leading back to the colony. This trail lets other worker ants know where the newly discovered food supply is. This is why you will see more ants in the beginning.
Meanwhile, the active ingredient, Borax, is slowly interfering with the ant’s digestive system, ultimately killing it, but leaving enough time for the ant to go back and share the dose with the rest of the colony. This slow kill is necessary so that foraging ants can make several trips to the bait. The communal nature of an ant colony allows the bait to be spread to hundreds, if not thousands, of individual ants.
How to Use Liquid Ant Baits
TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are very easy to use. Before placing the bait stations, be sure to remove other sources of food, such as crumbs, sugar and grease spots to prevent attracting ants elsewhere. Do not place bait where you’ve already sprayed insecticides, as the pests may avoid the bait stations.
- Hold the bait station firmly with bait pack tab facing up. Break off the tab being careful not to spill the bait.
- Place the bait station label side up on a flat surface near signs of ants. Place additional bait stations anywhere they may enter your home. For best results, use all bait stations to ensure a sufficient supply for the ants.
- Monitor placements regularly, but do not interfere with the pests or bait stations. Replace when bait is depleted. Complete control may take up to two weeks.
- Once ants are controlled, replace the baits every 3 months to keep them from returning.

User questions & answers
Question: | does it kill sugar ants |
Answer: | Yes! |
Question: | Will this product kill tiny ants? Also, will it get rid of the entire colony what is already nested in your house? Thanks |
Answer: | It kills every ant on your property if you use it right. It was more effective than my pest control companies stuff. Been using it for years. I am back here to order more. Don't use before it rains and use the whole product as it will degrade if you open and let it sit. |
Question: | Has anyone used this around lizards or squirrels? Or would anyone use it around these critters |
Answer: | I have used this product for a couple of years now. It works great. I sprinkle it around my home and around my yard perimeter. I have not seen a decrease in the gecko's/lizards so I assume they are ok. I don't think squirrels are attracted to it either. The product works great for about 45-60 days. |
Question: | My ants ignore this bait completely. They are not interested in sugar or p.n.butter either. What's the solution |
Answer: | Amdro perimeter bait is a preventive solution for around the outside of the house to prevent ant from coming inside. If you already have ants in your home, try a different solution...such as Terro Liquid and bait. They shouldn't ignore that. You will have to put up with an ant trail for a couple of days, but they will go away. |

Why is Bait Better?
Bait is considered one of the most effective methods for killing ants. Bait works even when you can't find the nest and unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen.
Bait is designed to taste like food, so it is enticing to ants. Once worker ants find the bait, they bring it back to be shared with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.
As a means to ensure that the bait is shared with all the ants in the colony, there is a delayed reaction before the bait begins to take its full effect and kill all the ants in the colony. Therefore, bait is considered to be more effective than contact killers since bait is shared with the entire colony, while contact killers will only kill ants that come into contact with the product.
With AMDRO, it's game over for ants.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Ant Bait take to work?
The active ingredient in AMDRO works with delayed action, ensuring worker ants have time to share the bait with the colony. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.
What is the best way to treat for ants I found inside my home?
If there are ants already inside your home, we recommend doing two things. First, use one of the AMDRO Kills Ants products listed for indoor usage above to kill the ants that are already inside. Second, apply AMDRO Ant Block Home Perimeter Ant Bait granules around the outside of your home to prevent ants from getting inside.
Do I have to reapply granules if it rained after being put down?
For best results, we recommend not applying the product when the ground is soaking wet or when heavy rains are expected.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this product only good for active termites? I am remodeling a bathroom and am wondering if this would be good to Pre treat before we dry wall |
Answer: | I bought for someone else. I didn’t see any different in either one in roaches. Bought several brands. Had to finally get expensive stuff and bait placed. |
Question: | Is this okay to spray on the carpet area along the bottom of the wall |
Answer: | They're do small that your a NY roach might pick it up and carry it back to its nest for dessert. lol. On a more serious note, I hired an exterminator and the 1st thing he noticed was that I had those Raid boxes in major corners in my place. He suggested they were a waste of money and not effective. I took his word for it. |
Question: | Will it kill flying termites |
Answer: | Depending on how bad you infestation is, I would recommend using the fogger first to kill many of the pests then put out all the egg stoppers and baits to stop any ones that survived from reproducing. |
Question: | Will this stick to the ceiling? I have a tiny crack between the wall and ceiling |
Answer: | The egg killers/stoppers don't effect the eggs already laid; it makes the adult female roaches sterile....they can no longer reproduce/lay eggs. It breaks the reproductive cycle. The roach baits kill the roaches once they've hatched. |

Spectracide Terminate Products
There are two types of homes: those that have termites and those that will eventually have termites. Whether you live in the North or South or have a new or old home, your home is a target for termites.
Spectracide Terminate products kill wood-destroying insects, with options for detection, outdoor treatment and indoor crack and crevice control. Along with a professional inspection to determine the extent of an active infestation, these products offer effective, do-it-yourself options for controlling wood-destroying insects.
How do you know if you have termites?
Subterranean termites are found in 49 of the 50 states and Puerto Rico (everywhere but Alaska). If termites have invaded your home, you may see some of these warning signs:
- Small wings near windows and doors or in the garage.
- Mud tunnels along the foundation of your house (inside or outside).
- Small holes in the wood or drywall, or buckling paint.
Because termites eat wood from the inside out, it might be difficult to determine the extent of an active infestation. If you suspect termites, get a professional inspection and treat the area where termites are present.
Reduce potential food sources.
Check for leaky water spigots or sprinklers, and ensure that water flows away from your home.
Remove potential food sources.
Pay attention to areas where wood contacts soil directly, including fences, stairs, trellises, wood piles, stumps, dead bushes or other wood debris.
Pre-treat soil.
When building a new home, check with your contractor for soil pre-treatments that can be applied by a professional pest control operator.
Get regular inspections.
Certified inspectors can point out termite-critical areas around your home and may recommend other treatments, such as mechanical alteration or foundation treatment.

User questions & answers
Question: | Ants are entering my son’s room near the ceiling. What is the consistency of this product? Will it drip if I apply it to the ceiling corners |
Answer: | The product has a gel like consistency but may also have some liquid when applied. The gel will run sometimes when applied to walls but this provides more bait for the ants. Do not disturb the ants while they swarm the bait. |
Question: | Does it have a strong odor? Thanks for your time |
Answer: | Hi! No---it has no odor that I've noticed, and you use very little at a time. You need to put it in the path of the ants and just little dabs at a time. It's a pretty thick gel so it sticks up around the ceilings, under a countertop edge, etc... just keep it away from pets and kids! |
Question: | Is this for sugar ants or protein ants |
Answer: | Sugar - says right in the description - The sugar-based gel matrix of Optigard ant gel bait is highly attractive to ants, which makes it extremely effective. |
Question: | if you used terro how does this compare |
Answer: | I have used Terro and I have found Optigard to be considerable more effective. What has worked well for me is to identify where the ants are coming from, and where their trails are. I then place a bead of about 1/2 inch, or so, near the entrance and on the trails. (If you are concerned about about pets or children touching the gel you might cut one inch pieces of drinking straws and put the bead of gel inside those) The ants are quickly attracted to the gel and you need to leave it alone. The ants will take the gel back to the nest and use it to feed the queen and the young ants. They will quickly die (a couple of days) and once the life cycle of ants is relatively short a dead queen means ne new ants. I've had really good results doing this. |

Other baits can be too gooey, which prevents ants from transporting them back to the colony. However, the consistency of Optigard makes it easy for ants to carry to the colony and share with nestmates.
Optigard ant gel bait is also known for its durability under harsh environmental conditions. The formulation resists degradation caused by high temperatures and can retain its palatability for more than two weeks. Ants will continue to feed on Optigard ant gel bait even if the product dries out over time and the active ingredient becomes concentrated. This long-lasting effect reduces the chance of call backs and requires fewer applications.
Product description
TERRO Outdoor Liquid Ant Baits are ideal for large ant infestations. It attracts and kills all common household ants including Argentine ants, ghost ants, cornfield ants, pavement ants, acrobat ants, white footed ants, little black ants, odorous house ants and other sweet eating ants. To attract and kill ants, simply place the pre-filled, ready-to-use liquid bait stations outdoors in areas where ants are observed and, if desired, secure baits with the stakes provided. The bait stations can also be placed on decks, or in garages or basements without using the stakes. Ants typically follow defined trails from the nest to food or water. Placing the outdoor ant baits close to these trails will improve control. The patented outdoor ant baits prevent the liquid bait from drying out, providing the ants with a continuous supply of food, day and night.

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I tell If they are empty? Unlike the indoor traps they are not clear |
Answer: | The trap should be replaced every 3 months. |
Question: | We haver grease eating ants. Is this the right product |
Answer: | Terro says product is for "Attracting and killing all common household ants including Argentine ants, ghost ants, cornfield ants, pavement ants, acrobat ants, white footed ants, little black ants, odorous house ants and other sweet eating ants." Terro is a sweet bait; grease eating ants are attracted to protein. They might go for Terro; however if protein sources are still to be found in your house they will probably ignore the bait. I haven't had a problem with grease eating ants, but I understand that from folks who have that the Combat formula is better for attracting grease eating ants. You can also make your own baits for grease eaters by mixing boric acid (a white powder you can find in drugs stores or hardware stores) with peanut butter. Just make sure that the bait is out of reach of kids and animals (I have used boric acid/watermelon bait successfully with sweet-eating ants. However, it can only be used indoors, as sun dries it up and rain washes it away.) Good Luck! |
Question: | Will this work on fire ants |
Answer: | Yes absolutely I had the worst ant problem I have ever seen when I moved into my new home. They moved in because of a drought in Texas. The first two days I did not see much of a difference and was about to write a bad review, but I had to go out of town, I left and when I came back the next week there were no more ants, not a single one, in fact it has been almost a year and I still haven't seen one inside or outside since. This stuff is amazing. Also my dog ate 2 of the yard baits we were worried he would get sick but he was perfectly fine that's a plus also. |
Question: | Will these work for carpenter ants |
Answer: | Carpenter ants infest every tree on my property and I found them foraging inside the garage (very bad news). Mostly for the garage, but also because I have one very nice pin oak, I placed 2 of these just inside the garage door and at the base of the tree and within 1 month no more ants. So, I guess it works on carpenter ants. However, if you use the trap per the package instructions the carpenter ants are too large to enter. What you do instead is push down and rotate as instructed to puncture the internal pouch then very carefully lift the cup back up to its original position and snap it into place. This opens the trap all the way around an the carpenter ants can enter. I intend to buy more as it works on almost every ant on my property. And that's a lot of different types of ants. You might also try Bayer Advance 375A. Its a protein based poison and if the ants don't have a sweet tooth that day they go for it. The terro traps make excellent bait stations for the 375A once the liquid is gone. |

What Type of Ants?
Luckily, most ants are sweet eating and love out bait. Our TERRO Liquid Ant Bait works with all common household ants including: Argentine ants, ghost ants, cornfield ants, pavement ants, acrobat ants, white footed ants, little black ants, odorous house ants, crazy ants, big headed ants and other sweet eating ants.
How it Works
When it comes to ants, always try to start with baiting. Unlike contact killers, which only target visible worker ants on your property, these baits include slow-acting ingredients that have a delayed effect on the ant's digestive system. This allows ants to feed and return to the colony where they can spread the bait to the young and queen. During this time, the number of ants may increase as they swarm to feed on the sweetened liquid before they begin disappearing altogether.
