12 best bug powders
Bug powders, often referred to as insecticidal powders or pest control powders, are products used to control and eliminate a wide range of pests, including insects and arachnids, in outdoor and indoor settings. These powders are commonly used in gardens, homes, and other areas where pests can become a nuisance. Here's what you should know about bug powders:
Active Ingredients: Bug powders contain active ingredients that are toxic to pests. Common active ingredients include diatomaceous earth (DE), pyrethrin, pyrethroid, and boric acid. Diatomaceous earth, a natural and non-toxic option, is particularly popular for its effectiveness against crawling insects like ants, roaches, and bedbugs.
Mode of Action: Bug powders work through various mechanisms. Diatomaceous earth, for example, is abrasive and absorbs the waxy outer layer of insects, causing them to dehydrate and die. Pyrethrin-based powders disrupt the nervous system of insects, leading to paralysis and death.
Application: Bug powders are typically applied by dusting or sprinkling the powder in areas where pests are active or likely to travel. This includes cracks and crevices, along baseboards, around plants, and in wall voids. Some powders are also suitable for use on pets to control fleas and ticks.
Indoor and Outdoor Use: Bug powders can be used both indoors and outdoors. When using them indoors, it's important to follow safety guidelines and keep pets and children away from treated areas until the powder settles.
Residual Effect: Some bug powders provide a residual effect, meaning they remain effective for an extended period after application. This can help prevent re-infestations and reduce the need for frequent reapplication.
Pet-Friendly Options: If you have pets, it's crucial to choose bug powders that are safe for them. Some products are labeled as pet-friendly, but always read the instructions and precautions on the product label.
Targeted Pests: Different bug powders may target specific types of pests. Before purchasing a bug powder, identify the type of pest you are dealing with to select the most appropriate product.
Safety Precautions: When using bug powders, wear protective gear such as gloves and a mask to avoid inhaling the powder. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe handling and application.
Environmental Considerations: Diatomaceous earth, in particular, is considered an environmentally friendly option as it is a natural substance. It does not harm the environment, beneficial insects, or pets when used as directed.
In conclusion, bug powders are valuable tools in pest control, both for indoor and outdoor applications. They come in various formulations with different active ingredients, each suited for specific pests. When using bug powders, always prioritize safety, follow the product's instructions, and consider the environmental impact of your choice.

Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth - Ant, Bedbug and Crawling Insect Killer
Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth is a stain-free, powder-like product specifically lethal to crawling insects. Made with diatomaceous earth, this versatile and dual-action formula quickly kills a wide range of insects by touch and by ingestion. Best of all, Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency, and when applied as directed won’t have adverse effects on humans or the environment.
Apply confidently indoors or outdoors: simply sprinkle the non-staining powder across infested areas, making sure to cover every crack and crevice where insects may travel. It will begin to work in just minutes and completely kill crawling insects in as little as 48 hours.
Microscopic Particles Kill From the Inside and Out
Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) is composed of crushed fossilized fresh-water algae - aka diatoms. While soft to a human’s touch, D.E. particles have microscopic, razor-sharp edges that effectively penetrate and cut open an insect’s delicate exoskeleton to dehydrate it from the outside. D.E. is also very dry and porous, so when an insect ingests the powder, it quickly absorbs the insect’s moisture and dries it out from the inside. As long as the product remains dry, it remains effective. What’s more, because of how Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth works, insects cannot grow immune to it - you’ll never have to switch insect-killers again.
Kitchens and Living Areas
Coat a thin layer of dust underneath and behind appliances, furniture, doorways, windowsills and other cracks and hiding places around the home.
Attics, Basements and Garages
Apply in every nook and cranny of infested areas to completely eradicate insects and end the breeding cycle.
Beds and Mattresses
Dust onto every inch and crevice of your bed and mattress to kill off bedbugs.
Exteriors, Patios and More
Use in outdoor areas along entryways and exterior windows to kill insects before they enter the home.
The Safer Brand Philosophy
One of the world's leading brands in organic insect control, organic plant disease control and organic gardening products for over 20 years, Safer Brand is dedicated to offer the broadest and deepest selection of quality insect control and plant disease control products at competitive prices.
Sprinkle Directly Where Insects Live
Safer Brand Diatomaceous Earth kills a variety of crawling insects including bedbugs, cockroaches, earwigs, grasshoppers, ants, crickets, millipedes, centipedes, silverfish, carpet beetles, fleas, and more. For quick results, apply directly to cracks and crevices inside and outside your home, hitting these insects directly where they live and breed.
Coat a thin layer of dust underneath and behind appliances, furniture, doorways, windowsills and other hiding places throughout your kitchen and living areas. And if you see any insects while you’re applying, make sure you sprinkle D.E. directly on them for further benefit. Don’t forget to apply in nooks and crannies of attics, basements and garages as these places are known hotspots that many crawling insects love to hide in.

Question: | So this helps with all roaches |
Answer: | Read on this page under 'Our Story' and it tells you how they got rid of cock roaches and water bugs at the white house in 1924. |
Question: | How well does this work on Camel or cave crickets |
Answer: | Very well |
Question: | does it kill bedbugs and fleas |
Answer: | YES this does kill bedbugs. Here's my horrific bed bug story. I realized we had bed bugs early because my nephew had them so I knew it was just a matter of time before I ended up w them. So I did a bunch of research on this product. It was recommended to me by the terminx guy on the phone. His fee was outrageously expensive. 1200 for 1 bedroom of my house and my living room furniture. So we put this product all over our bedrooms and living room. It was like living in filth for 4 weeks straight. But the bed bugs died. It takes two weeks for this to kill them. It's not a contact kill. We also put new box spring and mattress covers on that were bed bug proof. And covered our bed and living room. My sister had a bigger bed bug problem and she used this and temprid sc. Hope this helps!!! |
Question: | I used a hand-made shaker last time. Is it worth the extra $ to get the powder duster |
Answer: | I used a old ketchup bottle and filled it 1/3 and squeezed it that way to spread it. It worked better than the powder duster. |

Answer: | It will destroy them.just use some kinda of dry, empty squeeze bottle, poof about 3 times into the hole, they will track the dust back to the nest, spread it,kill off the colony.this suff will take out bees next in a wall void! |
Question: | Can this be used in house to kill fleas around pets and children |
Answer: | Ask your vet for up to date advice. Carlson & Giffin's 1983 edition of Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook recommends it (5% only) for flea, ant, tick, and lice control by sprinkling it liberally in the environment and forcing it into cracks. It also says to treat your cats bedding 2 weeks apart. Now that advice is from 1983 and in 2018 Sevin started changing the active ingredient in some of their products from carbaryl to zeta-cypermethrin and bifenthrin. There are also a lot of blogs that warn about the dangers of carbaryl. From these people's experiences, it seems you want to make sure there's no accidental ingestion and don't sprinkle it on their coat and don't mix it in their bath. |

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the active ingredients in GardenTech Sevin insecticides?
Sevin Insect Killer Ready to Use, Concentrate and Ready to Spray products contain the active ingredient zeta-cypermethrin. The active ingredients in Sevin Insect Killer Granules are zeta-cypermethrin and bifenthrin. Sevin-5 Ready-To-Use 5% Dust contains the active ingredient carbaryl.
How do Sevin insecticides control insects?
Sevin products are non-systemic insecticides. This means that the product is not absorbed into the plant or distributed through the plant's systems. Sevin products remain on the plant surface and kill insects by contact when they crawl on the treated plant or ingest the treated plant surface. Sevin insecticides continue controlling pests as they gradually break down in the environment.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this food grade Diatomaceous Earth |
Answer: | The EPA site at https://www.epa.gov/bedbugs/pesticides-control-bed-bugs says not to use food grade DE because it can be harmful when breathed. Since the product is EPA approved, it must not be food grade. Don't eat it! :-) |
Question: | Will it harm my cat |
Answer: | It didn't harm my cat. I bought throw away plastic dishes and put each leg of my bed in one. And put the powder all around the leg |
Question: | can u put this on the matresse and sleep on it at night |
Answer: | I haven't used it yet as don't have bugs. Just bought it as a precaution because I travel frequently. But I think I would only put it around the floor of the bed. I purchased bed bug proof mattress and box spring covers for bed. |
Question: | Is this product effective and is it a guarantee it kills bugs |
Answer: | No, it does does work within 48 hours as advertised. I will be returning this product. We tested it to see how effective it was. We caught a bed bug and put some powder on it. Then we waited to see the results. Even after 72 hours, it is still alive. It’s much flatter than when we caught it but still alive. Therefore, I would not recommend this product. |

Our Story
Problem solving has a long heritage at PF Harris. In 1924, two years after its founding, the company tackled the Calvin Coolidge White House, which had been overrun for years by roaches and water bugs. Harris’s product was so successful in eliminating the scourge that he was described on the front page of the Washington Times as a "vermin slayer" who has just fought a decisive, winning battle with a horde of cockroaches which infested the lower regions of the Executive Mansion.
Over the course of the next few months Harris took “his final feast” to dozens of government buildings, including the Senate Office Building, the Department of Justice, the Supreme Court and Walter Reed Hospital. Success followed success: Each superintendent of the various buildings was highly satisfied with the results.
The company today stays nimble enough to respond to changing market demands, leading the way in the development of numerous products, including natural insect repellents like Swamp Gator and Swamp Gnat which repel biting insects without using deet. Beyond the products it sells, Harris helps customers find easy and economical solutions to pest problems through helpful labeling, instructive videos and personal advice.
It’s a brand with a reliable past and an innovative future. PF Harris is America’s oldest EPA-registered company. With more than 55 products, the company provides solutions to treat everything from roaches and bed bugs to scorpions and stink bugs.
Identify, Eliminate & Prevent
Harris Diatomaceous Earth Bed Bug Powder is an important part of the bed bug treatment process. Using a liquid spray and mattress encasement cover along with the powder will increase your chances of success. Below are the steps to identify, eliminate and prevent bed bugs infestations.
1. Identify
Appearance
Bed Bugs are tan to brown blood sucking parasites up to 5mm long (roughly the size of an apple seed) with a flat, oval shaped body. Bed Bugs are often confused with the following insects:
- Fleas
- Lice
- Lint/Seeds
- Carpet Beetle
Signs of Activity
Many people believe that bed bugs are too small to be seen. This isn’t true. While Bed Bugs are usually found in the bed, they can navigate around the bedroom and even into the living room. Bed bugs spend the day in harborages close to a bed, couch or chair that people sit in for long periods. They come out at night and crawl to a bed or chair to get a blood meal.
To check your bed for activity, look along the underside of the seams of the mattress. In most cases, if you have bed bugs you will notice dark colored fecal matter in this area.
Next, check the cracks of the headboard and bed frame. Bed bugs, if squished, will leave a dark red stain behind. In cases of heavy infestation, the blood sucking parasites may be found all around the room most commonly in the following places:
- Folds of curtains
- Seams of chairs and couches
- Behind wall hangings
- Edges of electrical outlets and window frames
Bites
Bed bugs usually feed between at night while we are asleep. They can feed up to 10 minutes before returning to a hiding area to digest the meal. After feeding, bed bugs may be dormant for 5 to 7 days while they digest the blood meal.
Although the bite may not be immediately felt, people often react to the proteins of the bed bug saliva introduced during biting. Usually, a reddish spot may develop, associated with some swelling and itching. There may be little response immediately following the bite, with peak itchiness being noticed one to two days later. Repeated exposure to bed bug bites may produce more intensive reactions and itchiness. However, these reactions are highly variable and some people may show absolutely no signs of being bitten while others react strongly. Fortunately, testing has determined that bed bugs are incapable of transmitting human pathogens.
2. Eliminate
- Wash and dry bed linens and furniture covers at high temperatures. Minimum drying time: 20 minutes.
- Disassemble bed. Thoroughly vacuum all six sides of box springs, mattress and bed components. Vacuum furniture, carpets and floors.
- Shake container prior to spraying mattress, box springs, bed components, flooring and baseboards. Allow to dry completely.
- Enclose mattress and box springs in encasements to prevent bed bug entry and exit. Do not remove encasements.
- Apply powder into cracks and crevices in furniture and rooms.
Most insecticides used for bed bug control are primarily of the pyrethroid> Vacuuming
Thoroughly vacuum all 6 sides of box springs and mattresses. Vacuum all cracks and crevices within the furniture of the bed and nearby electrical outlets, baseboards and floors prior to treatment. Empty the vacuum contents into a plastic bag and discard in trash.
Handling BeddingSheets and other bedding can be easily disinfected by laundering that involves a dryer cycle. The high temperatures involved in drying are critical to successfully kill bed bugs, with exposure to temperatures exceeding 120º F for 20 minutes usually sufficient to kill all life stages.
When stripping beds during a bed bug treatment, pull the sheets carefully so as not to dislodge eggs or drop bed bugs onto the floor where they may be missed by other treatments. Accidental spread of bed bugs can also be prevented by bagging the bedding as it is moved to the laundry.
Mattress / Boxspring EncasementsMattress encasements enclose your mattress and box spring and are an integral step in the treatment process for two reasons: Firs, they protect your investment in bedding. Second, they reduce the areas where bed bugs can hide nearest to you. Water-resistant, tight-weave fabric prevents the entry of even the smallest bed bug.
Disposal of Infested ItemsDisposal may be considered for mattresses, box springs, couches or other furniture that is heavily infested with bed bugs. If this is done, proper disposal should be ensured. Leaving such items on the street for disposal may cause them to be scavenged, which will spread infestations to new dwellings. Be careful when removing the items from the structure so that bed bugs will not become dislodged and infest other areas inside.
3. Prevent
Prior to Travel
- Spray luggage and allow to dry completely
- Pack clothing and personal effects in sealable plastic bags
- Bring extra resealable plastic bags for soiled clothing
At Hotel/Destination
- Place luggage in bathroom while you do inspection. If there are signs of bed bug activity, check out of that hotel
- Pull back the sheets back and check the along the seams of the mattress for bed bug feces
- Never put your suitcase on the bed and do not unpack your suitcase contents into dressers
- Re-pack luggage contents into sealable plastic bags
Returning Home
- Unpack luggage outside, or in a garage, laundry room or utility room. Leave luggage in garage, laundry or utility room
- Inspect luggage and clothing for signs of activity. If signs are found, spray luggage again
- Wash and dry clothing at high temperatures
- Kills Resistant Bed Bugs & Eggs - Effective against bed bugs that have built up a resistance to traditional pyrethroid pesticides
- Multiple Application Methods - Puffer tip allows you to get deep into cracks and crevices while the brush is great for dusting hard surfaces
- Long Lasting - The powder will continue to kill bed bugs when kept undisturbed
- Versatile - For use in homes, hotels, motels, hospitals and nursing homes
- Many Use Areas - Use on mattresses, box springs, cushions, crack and crevices according to label directions

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between Harris diatomaceous earth and Harris bed bug killer diatomaceous earth |
Answer: | None that I know of. |
Question: | Is it pet friendly |
Answer: | Yes. This stuff just comes from "diatoms". Basically, their crustaceans. It cuts the bugs exoskeleton and they dry out, but it takes time for them to pass through the dust for it to cut them up and they lose body water. Doesn't hurt us or animals, but I wouldn't dust it to the extent that you and the pets are breathing it so much. Make sure you change your house filters often or it can clog up the systems and you will have another issue. Whatever you use...if it says "residual", that is what is not safe for pets. It can get in their pads and absorb poison into their feet. Most other control treatments just need to get dry for 8hrs. |
Question: | how would this be used to prevent bed bugs |
Answer: | I have lived through this nightmare with tenants bringing. If you rent, do NOT try to do it yourself, depending on the infestation they can be hard to eradicate. Do the right thing and notify. Don't risk taking them to someone else's property if you move. Look up how to check for them carefully with flashlight. I used a professional company--3 sprays 2 weeks apart using a different mix chemicals each time, and still a tenant saw one that got away in a box of stuff she had and did not check it carefully when un-bagging, that was 10 days after 3rd spray so had them come and spray again and check, and they got rid of their old mattress/box spring and two ripped couches. I think it had been going on for months, but new roommate was sensitive to bites and figured it out, so I would say they bred for months. The prep work is crucial to winning the war (you can look that up,plenty of info online) plus I have used this along edges of rooms, corners of closets, backs of dressers, drawer backs and inside when drawer removed, sockets, and will continue to do every few weeks after vacuum for safeguard. You don't usually see them as they hide during day, unless you have a heavier infestation, alcohol will kill them on contact and used in spray bottle for shoes and some tiny areas. All exterminating companies will do a free inspection to see if you have them and not hard to learn to check yourself and where. I highly advise to be diligent for several months and not let your guard down to quick! |
Question: | Does this product have any other ingredient besides DE |
Answer: | This is a mechanical insecticide, that is to say it is Diatomaceous Earth powder, a soft siliceous powder which lacerates the abdomen or if ingested kills the insect within 48 hours. The insect quite literally dies the " death of a thousand cuts " . It's 85% DE and 15% other which is most likely a filler unspecified however. So far my experience with it has been very positive, I haven't seen any insects since distributing this powder. I do recommend the use of a dust mask when dusting your rooms as we should always err on the side of safety. If you have a problem you'll love this product . BTW remember it must remain dry to be effective and keep in mind that with these type infestations persistence is key to winning so don't let up. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be dusted into the dry bathtub directly to kill silverfish? Is this carpet safe |
Answer: | It has a push on RF connector. If you are looking for one with the screw on type connection, this (mine, anyway) won't work. The antenna with it & those I have purchased, however, all have the push on type round end connector so that was not the issue for me. Hope this helps you. I took pics of the connector and the top of tv into which it goes, but I can't get it to accept them. I will continue to attempt to include pics for you, though |
Question: | Is there a trick to getting the powder out? No matter how much I shake or squeeze nothing comes out of the tip |
Answer: | did not come with stand |
Question: | Does this kill centipedes |
Answer: | Sorry, can't help...I thru it in the garbage..It's a piece of junk.. |
Question: | What do if they are in power outlets |
Answer: | In my earlier review, I mentioned that I had to remove the stand fitting and rotate it to make the stand work. You can look at my review for details. It is a simple fix. Hope this helps. |

About Harris

User questions & answers
Question: | Es en polvo |
Answer: | I never used this product. |
Question: | Has anyone had success using this down a kitchen drain for roaches |
Answer: | Would recommend replacing every 3 months. |
Question: | Is is easy to vaccum up?? How long did it take before results were seen |
Answer: | Can't say with certainty; I've not had reason to use it this way. Clearly one wouldn't want the cannister to be accessible to anyone who is not able to handle it responsibly but, that having been said, I doubt the item could be effective in a car. If I understand its function correctly, the ants take its contents back to their nest and the colony dies from ingesting the material. |
Question: | Does this kill centipedes & spiders |
Answer: | This should work with all species of Ants. If you order these from ToyArama before 11:00pm eastern time tonight we will ship these to you TOMORROW. We are looking forward to serving you. Ken @ ToyArama |

Question: | How long do you keep it down before vacuuming it all up |
Answer: | We went out of town for the weekend . We came back to vacuum it up and it was a total mess. It was like vaccuuming wet flour. Gummed up everything and took hours to clean the carpet. Our carpet felt like a hair brush after we finally got it all up. It was soft and fluffy before using it. |
Question: | Is it safe |
Answer: | We've found it very safe |
Question: | Do this power kill eggs and adults instantly |
Answer: | It takes a day or 2 to kill them with this product. The diatomaceous earth in it dehydrates them so it takes time. If you clean your house really good, use a bed bug spray, then apply this after the spray has dried it should take care of your bed bug problem |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this product safe for my small dog |
Answer: | Hello, we also have the Bed Bug Killer 2oz travel size bottles . |
Question: | Not sure if we have fleas or bed bugs, but will this kill fleas if we have those with the bed bugs |
Answer: | You can use this product to end bed bugs anywhere. Since it is non-toxic and non-staining. You can certainly spry inside the car, which we always recommend as part of your treatment. Many people only treated room without treating the car, ended up in re-infestation. |
Question: | Help me, does this product work? I only see a few every now and then. And Tips |
Answer: | Usually the critters hide somewhere within about 10 feet of the bed (and many times in the mattress/bed). I bought the gallon size, and with a pressure sprayer, sprayed the entire perimeter of the room, walls, cracks, ceiling, and all outlets/furnace vents first (to kill them if they "scatter"). I then dusted, pretty heavily with diatomaceous earth on all flat surfaces and especially under the bed (to kill them if they walk along the floor). Covered the mattress and box spring with a bed-bug proof cover. Washed all bed linens/clothes/soft goods in "HOT" washer, or at least a 40 minute "HOT dryer treatment. Then sprayed all the bedframe, nightstands, dressers, etc. with EcoRaider. Every two weeks I reapplied the EcoRaider and I didn't vacuum up the diatomaceous earth dust under the bed. Look on YouTube and the EcoRaider website for suggested protocol to follow. They are really easy to kill, but amazingly smart at hiding out and avoiding all treatments, so you have to be diligent. |
Question: | Why does harris include here both the diatomaceous earth powder, and also the silica powder? when do i use each? or both? in separate places or same p |
Answer: | Nothing. Bed bugs do not like the scent of lavender and they would avoid it; however, if you have bed bugs just pay to exterminate of purchase Eco Raider. I bought this for someone who had a "light" case. She started having bites from bed bugs in 1 room. She used this for 1 week and they are gone. |
