| Answer: | There are two things that make a chest dangerous: first, if it's air tight when closed, and second if the lid is self latching. The older chests with self latching lids are illegal since around the 1980s. Antique malls are even supposed to check for self latching, and can get free of charge retrofit kits to replace the latch. Self latching combined with air tight was so dangerous for suffocation, and self latching antiques have caused many deaths. That said, without air holes, two children could lock one another in. If you look at toy chests, those have big indentations cut under the lid. When you look at a toy chest, those look like places to slide hands under and better lift the lid, but they also are ventilation and are needed to make the box safe for young kids. I have 3 kids and I guarantee, if kids are together, one will climb in the box, and another will close it and sit on the lid. Telling them not to won't stop it. When I have gotten large chests for my small children, I have drilled many 3/4 inch diameter holes in the sides. It ruins the chest (looks bad and moths can get in so negates the benefits of cedar) but makes it safe for kids. My mother was upset that I drilled holes in two large chests to make them safe around kids, but I had to. And, I have only gotten plywood footlockers, and have avoided nice cedar antiques because I don't want to drill and ruin something so nice. Kids are so rough on things, probably it's better to get a beat up used box and drill the air holes, or to get a kids toy box designed for safety which has those big gaps under the lid so that air blows right through. Little Colorado, Melissa and Doug, and International Concepts each make a solid wood toy box for kids that specifically has the slow close lid and ventilation. |

| Answer: | Interior Dimensions: 43-1/4"L x 14-1/2"W x 13-1/2" D. Hinges keep the lip propped up and does not slam shut which is nice but it does not have a lock. I considered installing a latch to keep the lid shut flat at it is not heavy enough to weigh down a blanket, but it would have ruined the look of the chest. So I had to make sure to store items flush to the top so the lid can shut flat. Other than that, it's a pretty decent chest for the price. |
