14 best 2 cycle oils
2-cycle oil, also known as two-stroke engine oil, is a specialized type of lubricating oil used in engines that operate on a two-stroke cycle. Two-stroke engines are commonly found in outdoor power tools such as chainsaws, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, and small motorcycles. Here is what you need to know about 2-cycle oils:
Two-Stroke Engines: Two-stroke engines are internal combustion engines that complete a power cycle in two strokes of the piston. They are known for their simplicity and lightweight design, making them popular in small power tools and recreational vehicles.
Lubrication and Combustion: In two-stroke engines, the oil plays a crucial role in both lubricating engine components and providing combustion support. Unlike four-stroke engines, which have a separate oil reservoir, two-stroke engines require oil to be mixed with the fuel.
Fuel-Oil Mixture: To ensure proper lubrication and combustion in a two-stroke engine, a specific ratio of 2-cycle oil is mixed with gasoline. The ratio varies depending on the manufacturer's recommendations and the engine type but is typically in the range of 50:1 (50 parts gasoline to 1 part oil) or 40:1.
Types of 2-Cycle Oil: There are different types of 2-cycle oils available, including mineral-based, synthetic, and semi-synthetic oils. Synthetic and semi-synthetic oils tend to offer better performance, reduced smoke, and cleaner combustion, but they may be more expensive than mineral-based options.
Ashless vs. Ash-Containing: 2-cycle oils can be categorized as ashless or ash-containing. Ashless oils leave fewer deposits in the engine and are preferred for modern, cleaner-burning engines. Ash-containing oils are generally older formulations and are less common today.
Mixing and Storage: When mixing 2-cycle oil with gasoline, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's recommended ratio carefully. Mixing too much oil can lead to excessive smoke and carbon buildup, while too little oil can result in engine damage. Additionally, mixed fuel should be used within a reasonable timeframe to prevent oil separation.
Environmental Considerations: Two-stroke engines have historically been known for producing higher emissions compared to four-stroke engines. However, advances in technology and the use of cleaner-burning oils have helped reduce the environmental impact of two-stroke engines.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance of two-stroke engines is crucial to ensure their longevity and proper performance. This includes cleaning air filters, replacing spark plugs, and using high-quality 2-cycle oil.
Compatibility: It's essential to use the right type of 2-cycle oil recommended by the manufacturer of your two-stroke engine. Using the wrong oil can lead to poor performance and potential engine damage.
In summary, 2-cycle oil is a specialized lubricating oil used in two-stroke engines commonly found in outdoor power tools and small vehicles. Proper mixing and use of the recommended oil are essential for the reliable operation and longevity of two-stroke engines.

Six Pack Of Echo OEM 2.6 fl oz PowerBlend® XTended Life Oil
Part # 6450001
6 2.6 oz Bottles
1 Bottle to One Gallon of Gas
- Echo 6 Pack of 1 Gallon Power Blend Oil Mix (50:1) 6450001
User questions & answers
Question: | How do I make it 25:1 ratio |
Answer: | Usually the ratio is 50:1, that's a little container of two cycle oil (2.6 oz) to one gallon of gas. To make 25:1 use the 2.6 oz two cycle oil to a 1/2 gallon of gas. That's the simple way. I just got a two cycle engine that's Chinese made and this appears to be the trend so I tend to think it may be important to get the extra oil in the mix just to be safe. |
Question: | Does this product contain Fuel Stabilizer |
Answer: | Yes, it does contain Fuel Stabilizer. Great for off season to help jets from getting clogged and keeping fuel fresh. Highly recommended. Its what I use in all my 2 stroke motors. |
Question: | Is this a synthetic oil? If not I bought it for nothing |
Answer: | It states right on the bottle's label that it's a synthetic blend, which typically means it's part petroleum and part synthetic. I've been using the Echo branded 50:1 oil in my Echo weedeater (now 18 years old) and Echo leaf blower (now 20 years old), and with seasonal maintenance and proper care, both still start and run like they did when they were new. |
Question: | First time user...what are the directions |
Answer: | One gallon of gas to one 2.6 oz bottle of oil equals the 50 to 1 ratio. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is 6 oz ok for my 80cc bike I have a 1 gal tank and I need 20:1 for after breaking in and 16:1 for breaking in need a response fast I need oil |
Answer: | you can make the mix what ever you want just read the mix instructions |
Question: | I have never used this before. Do i need to buy anything else for my trimmer |
Answer: | I assume you have a 2 cycle trimmer. Read the manual on the correct oil/gas mixture. Most American built trimmers use a 40:1 or 50:1 mixture. 40:1 is 2.6 oz. per gallon. A little less oil if 50:1. Chinese 2 cycle motors still use 25:1 or 20:1 oil mixture. Use 5.1 oz. of oil per gallon of gas for 25:1 or a little more if 20:1 mixture. |
Question: | How many gallons will this treat if one whole 16 oz bottle is used |
Answer: | I use 50:1. That takes 2 oz per gallon so I get 8 gallons per bottle. It is great having the squeeze section so you can precisely measure before filling gas can. |
Question: | What size (oz) is the measure cup on top? Say I neeeded 3.2 oz |
Answer: | It has numerous markings including 32 to 1 or 3.2 oz there is a graduated scale on the side, loosen the cap and squeeze gently until the desired amount is reached. Should you decide to go with this, I used a sharpie to highlight the markings to make then easier to read |

User questions & answers
Question: | I used jones red oil in the past. it’s been a year since i have mixed gas. do i need to be concerned about compatibility |
Answer: | If the gas is a year old you need to throw it out |
Question: | Will this work on a 3cycle rotertiller |
Answer: | Don't think there has ever been a 3 cycle motor. If you mean 2 cycle rototiller it will work fine. |
Question: | Can this be used in 40:1 machines |
Answer: | I run this mix at 40-1 in all 3 of my Husqvarna chainsaws two of the call for 50-1 mix. I used to run it at 32-1 as one of my saws, a 1978 husky 480 CD requires 40-1. I prefer to keep my saws around for a while and not have them seize up. |
Question: | first time having to use this - may be a dumb question but I have to mix with gasoline correct |
Answer: | Correct. If using this your machine is most likely a 2 stroke machine. You need to find out what ratio the manufacturer recomends for the machine you are using it in. Mix the gas and oil to the correct ratio and then add it to the machine. I recommend getting a small 1 gallon gas can specifically for your mixed solution. Gas nowadays goes bad quick, so if you are not using much, only mix around 1 gallon at a time. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I realize that this works in a 50:1, but can it be used in a |
Answer: | I am not in a place to "second guess" the manufacturer of your device, but I know that oil products have improved over the years. I was a hands-on mechanic with 2-stroke equipment for a lot of years and I've seen the required mix go from 20:1 to 50:1 and higher. Some of this is due to the materials used in the equipment and some of this is due to the fact that newer oils have higher film strength. I believe this Stihl product is a full synthetic oil. I don't believe that running this stuff at the 50:1 ratio will hurt anything, but I also believe that increasing the mix ratio on this stuff to 40:1 will not cause problems with your current equipment and might only show itself as an occasional fouled spark plug. |
Question: | Why is the same package only $14.99 in the little hardware in town |
Answer: | Yeah. I just bought mine for $1.95 each locally. |
Question: | Can this product be stored in below freezing temperatures during the winter |
Answer: | Absolutely! It stays in my shed all winter and I have to say that since switching my machines to this synthetic oil they have never ran better. I have been using full synthetic oil in my vehicles since around 1980. I have NEVER had any engine issues with any of my vehicles and some of them I have racked up over 200,000 miles on before I traded them away. |
Question: | Why is this $5 more then in a retail store |
Answer: | I just paid $1.99/ea at Ace - the expensive hardware store. And the chain oil that's $42+ here? I paid $15.99. I've been noticing a lot of stuff is cheaper at the store lately. |

Answer: | not sure I am using it in oil injected 4 wheeler ( 2 cycle) |
Question: | Looking for a 2 cycle oil for an 1990 Mercury Mariner, can I use a synthetic blend in it without risking anything |
Answer: | I ran it in older 1995 Johnson and a 1998 Merc 200. When I sold them and bought a new 4 stroke I gave what had left and it was a few gallons. My friend has vintage 2 stroke MC and 80s Johnson. We have had good luck with the Pennzoil blends. I get less smoke. I have also used it in actually a 35 Mariner again 80's and 2 stroke lawn equipment. Never had a problem. Be careful not to switch to straight synthetic, that can be tricky but you should be fine with blend. You can always check with the engine manufacturer. G |
Question: | The picture shows 2 cycle outdoor oil multipurpose ! Can this be used for air cooled engines also |

Question: | Does the top part have a marking to make it easy to measure 2.6 oz |
Answer: | Yes, it measures from 1.0 to 3.2 oz. |
Question: | What is the shelf life of this oil |
Answer: | I have been making a 40:1 mix from two of these bottles for about 5 years without any issues. This oil has fuel stabilizers added to keep the mixed gas/oil mix fresh for about a year. |
Question: | Is this a synthetic 2 Cycle oil |
Answer: | It is a synthetic blend, so it is not 100% synthetic. Works great in chainsaws, leaf blowers and string trimmers. |
Question: | It says for all 32:1 ratio. my manual says i need 30:1. how should i mix it |
Answer: | OK, per 1 gallon (=128 fl.oz.), you need (128/32) 4.0 oz. of oil for a 32:1 mix. So a 30:1 mix would require (128/30) 4.27 oz. of oil per gallon. Best of luck measuring that last quarter ounce! Frankly, I wouldn't worry overmuch about being that accurate ... |
