While you usually have to keep your finger on the trigger to keep it running, if you pull the lock button all the way back while it's running, it will stay locked. Arguably this is "less safe" - power tools are inherently dangerous any way. This one (supposedly) cuts 3/4" branches, while other "safer" models cut only 1/2" or 5/8". This makes it more likely to accidentally sever a human digit. So it depends on whether you want a safe tool, or one that does the job it's designed to do.

Answer:	The instructions from Makita list various gauges of cable / cord for different lengths. At 120v / 6 amperes, a 25-ft length is 18 AWG minimum. 50-ft is 16 AWG minimum. 100-ft is 14 AWG minimum. 150-ft is 12 AWG minimum. As a EE myself, for this ~5 ampere 120v device, I would not use anything less than 14 AWG. And if it needed to be really long, then 12 AWG. These two gauges 14 and 12 AWG will effectively eliminate voltage drop and over-heating of the motor.

Question:	I purchased this item almost two years ago. Today I started to use it for the time. It ran for about 10 seconds and then quit. Unable to start it
Answer:	I bought this item in 2013 and had the same problem today. I disassembled the lower part of the unit (had to take out about 10 small bolts) and found the inside was full of small pieces of brush. It looked like a rat's nest; the brush had probably blocked some of the brushes/contacts on the motor. I blew out the debris with a leaf blower set on its lowest setting. I reassembled the unit and now it works fine.

Answer:	With the way the blade is configured, I don't think the blades could be sharpened without it being a very long and tedious procedure. After cutting back some jasmine that secretes a sticky liquid at the cut, I wiped off the blade with water and a towel and then sprayed the blades with WD40 and found that this improved the proformance of the blades.

Answer:	Perhaps 5 - 7 lbs. I did not put it on a scale. However please keep in mind that if you extend the trimmer out to ten feet your hands are now the fulcrum. This extension imbalances the trimmer and it feels heavier because of the extension leverage. I loved this product. I had no problem trimming my 25’ hedge on a ladder. You must work directly above yourself to handle the the 10’ extension. If you try to manage it laterally it is more difficult to manage. Good luck.

Answer:	There is one extension. The handle is 39 inches, the extension is 39 inches, the pole saw has a 24 inch shaft before the tool head, the hedge trimmer has a 12 inch shaft before the tool head.

Answer:	No, it does not have a fuse. If there was an electrical problem, I think it would trip a circuit breaker like an electric drill or saw would.
Question:	Could this be used to slice a Thanksgiving Day turkey
Answer:	I had seen videos using the suction feature which helped me buy it but it did not work for me even using gravity by elevating the bucket and using a short hose. Bought a Karcher k4 and suction hose and it works much better.
