10 best pond liners

Pond liners are essential components in the construction and maintenance of ponds, especially in the context of water gardens and outdoor decorative ponds. They serve as a barrier to contain water, preventing it from seeping into the surrounding soil. Here's what you should know about pond liners:

  1. Material Types: Pond liners are available in various materials, each with its own advantages and suitability for different applications. The most common types include:

    • EPDM Rubber: Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) rubber liners are highly durable and flexible. They are often the preferred choice for larger ponds and water gardens.
    • PVC: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) liners are cost-effective and relatively easy to install. They are commonly used for smaller ponds and water features.
    • HDPE: High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liners are known for their resistance to UV rays and punctures, making them suitable for ponds with direct sunlight exposure.
  2. Preformed Liners: In addition to flexible liners, preformed pond liners are available in specific shapes and sizes, such as kidney-shaped, round, or rectangular. These are ideal for smaller, pre-designed pond layouts and can save time during installation.

  3. Customization: Flexible pond liners allow for more customization in terms of pond shape and size. You can trim or overlap them to fit the contours of your pond design.

  4. Thickness: Pond liners come in various thicknesses, with thicker liners offering greater durability and resistance to tears or punctures. The choice of thickness depends on the size and depth of the pond.

  5. Underlayment: Underlayment is a protective layer placed beneath the pond liner to cushion it from sharp objects, roots, and rocks in the soil. Using an underlayment helps prolong the life of the liner.

  6. Installation: Installing a pond liner involves carefully excavating the pond area to the desired shape and depth, then laying the liner in place. It's important to ensure there are no wrinkles or folds in the liner that could lead to weak spots or leaks.

  7. Sealing and Securing: The edges of the pond liner are typically secured by folding them over and using rocks, soil, or other materials as weights to keep the liner in place. Some pond liners come with special clips or fasteners for this purpose.

  8. Maintenance: Pond liners require minimal maintenance, but periodic inspection is important to check for any damage or leaks. If necessary, repairs can be made using patch kits specifically designed for the liner material.

  9. Longevity: The lifespan of a pond liner depends on the material used, the quality of installation, and the maintenance practices. Well-maintained pond liners can last for many years.

  10. Aquatic Life: When using pond liners for water gardens with fish or aquatic plants, it's essential to choose materials that are safe for aquatic life and won't leach harmful chemicals into the water.

In summary, pond liners are crucial components for creating and maintaining water gardens and decorative ponds. Choosing the right type of liner, installing it properly, and conducting routine maintenance are key to ensuring a long-lasting and leak-free pond that adds beauty and serenity to your outdoor space.

User questions & answers

Question: I need a liner for a 17x10 and 3ft deep Pond what size liner would I have to get
Answer: If you plan on using chlorine then I would not suggest it. Chlorine will break down the material and it will eventually harden and crack. If you are using natural filtration then you can use it. We have had several clients use this material for natural swimming ponds.
Question: i need a liner to cover a pond 75 feet long, 10 feet deep and 25 feet wide - any suggestions/pricing
Answer: Yes, it is easy to cut. However; be careful if you have koi / fish. There was something in the liner that leached a residue. It killed all eleven of our fish. The water is a terrible brown - like river water. Since we had the fish for many years, it was very upsetting to spend so much for a liner and have it be such a lethal product.
Question: I have a pond that is 12 feet in length, 10 feet in width and 4 feet at its deepest length. What size do you recommend
Answer: You have to buy a new liner ASAP. Place your koi in a temporal large plastic pool with the pump, while you change the liner. We had the same problem, so my husband took about five days whike he changed everything (and even expanded) the pond. The fish were fine and now they are happier because have more space too. My husband also built a cover that let the light in, but protect the water from evaporating and from large birds fishing our babies.
Question: is this the same material used on roofs
Answer: would not make a dog bowl out of the liner but I imagine dogs have been drinking and swimming in these backyard ponds with this liner for decades now

User questions & answers

Question: Is this liner comes just 1 sheet ? Correct
Answer: I would recommend a 20' x 30' pond liner in order to accommodate for overlap. We have this liner in stock. Feel free to call us toll free at 888-838-4017 and we will be happy to assist you.
Question: how possible that pond would be leaking down after just installing new liner over the old liner? (two liners now), and water leaking right away
Answer: This size of an application will require a liner size of 50ft x 100ft. A liner of that size will accommodate the entirety of your feature. Thank you!
Question: Do i rinse the liner before i fill pond
Answer: In order to allow the recommended 2' overlap all the way around the pond, I suggest a 25' x 25'. If you go with a 20' x 25' you will only have 1' on one side.
Question: We received this today and it has a powdery glittery residue, is this normal
Answer: It is very similar to the Firestone roofing material although the manufacturing process for their Pondgard material uses fish safe chemicals rather than the hazardous (mildew and fungus resistant) chemicals used in roofing liner. Never use roofing liner for your pond - it will poison your fish.

User questions & answers

Question: is this 1 continuous piece of liner
Answer: Yes, it is one sheet that may have factory seam as all liners have factory seaming to increase length and width when manufacturing liners lareger that 10 feet wide. There is no aftermarket seaming. All one piece direct from the manufacturer.
Question: What are the measurements on depth? Our pond is dug at 15x25x3ft deep
Answer: Not knowing about your installation it is difficult to understand your situation. If you are using the same type of liner material (PondGard PL45-1515) then it seems baffling. The liner I installed for my Duck pond was flexible and has been very durable. Even though I had to cut holes in the liner to allow for drain and re-circulation pipes, I have not experienced any leaks. I used a Butyl rubber sealant around the holes. Obviously you have a hole somewhere. Who knows what has caused it. I'm sure it's conceivable that there is a manufacturing defect in the liner or that a puncture occurred during installation. Again, the material that I used has been flawless so far. The only possible remedy I can suggest is a complete pump out/drain and inspection.
Question: I want 1day shipping.. is it ok
Answer: Thanks for your question. Likely isn't a bad idea. There are many sellers of this product and they could store it near chemicals that may not entirely be safe. If you need more help you can call Pond & Garden Depot toll free at 1-866-305-5459 Regards, Cody H. Customer Service
Question: When you unroll this is it the 25 ft or 15 ft you are unrolling
Answer: Thanks for your question. That powdery glittery stuff is a talc powder and is used to keep layers of the liner separated during the manufacturing process. It is completely harmless to you and any plants or fish you may add to the pond. Although I admit it gets everywhere, you may want to dust off before you enter your house after handling it. User questions & answers

Question: about how long will this last and will it be enough for a 4x4x2depth pond with 3 foot waterfall
Answer: Yes, the 15x25 45 mil liner will be one full piece
Question: I want to line my 2 x 6 x3 ft wide stock tank. How does this work with that shape and how much will i need
Answer: To find the size liner you need for a given pond we use a simple formula. L = pond length + (2 x depth) + 2' over lap W = pond Width + (2 x depth) + 2' over lap so for a pond given 15x25 and 3 ft deep you would have: 15+(2 x 3) +2 = 23 length 25+(2 x 3) +2 = 33 width This is a very general formula, if you have anything special such as a stream or an odd shape you may need additional information to get an accurate size.
Question: what is 0.45" in mil
Answer: The cost of 1 day shipping will exceed the cost of the product. If you wish to have an exact quote please give us a call at 706-865-0220Thanks, Graystone Industries
Question: Is this made by Firestone? I see a review that says its not a Firestone product
Answer: Typically it will be rolled on the 25' section, or which ever side is longer for any piece of liner.

User questions & answers

Question: What’s the max depth for this liner
Answer: This is a flat sheet of material that is meant to tuck and fold into place meaning that whatever depth you create for your pond will reduce the overall length and width available. Here's an example: A pond that measures 4' Wide by 11' Long by 1'-6" Deep will require a liner at least 8' x 15'. Why? Measure the girth of the pond: 4' Width plus 1'-6" Down plus another 1'-6" back up equals 7' which leaves 1' leftover or 6" on each side for overlapping. The same process is followed for the length (11 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 1 = 15). REMEMBER, you can always make a liner smaller but it is quite difficult to make them larger once they are put into the ground. I hope this helps!
Question: Does it hold water
Answer: This item is a flexible, flat sheet of 20-mil black fish-grade PVC film. Its intended use is for pond liner applications and when used with recommended installation and care practices this liner will hold water for many many years.
Question: Is this a Rubber or vinyl liner
Answer: This liner is made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) aka "vinyl" - the material is Made in the USA and the formulation is specifically designed to be safe for both fish and aquatic plants.

User questions & answers

Question: can this work for waterproofing a flat shed roof. how would it glue to wood substrate
Answer: If you can find a glue that works effectively for vinyl and wood and that comes in a sufficiently large quantity, that could work. However, screws in conjunction with plastic "holey iron" would probably be more secure and economical to keep it down and attached.
Question: From the review, it sounded like this is *not* a one piece but 2 glued together. Is this true
Answer: There IS a seam on ours, have had it for two years and no issues
Question: From the review, it sounded like this is *not* a one piece but 2 glued together. Is this true

User questions & answers

Question: My waterfall/spillway has several curves in it. Is it necessary to split and seam the excess at the curves, or is it ok to leave creases in spillway
Answer: You can leave creases. Just make sure to try and have the folds facing downhill so that water doesn't pool up in them.
Question: Does it have a warranty
Answer: Firestone Pond liner comes with a 20 year manufacturer warranty against material defects when installed with a non woven geotextile pond underlayment. To be frank, the material is never defective and in 20 plus years I have only seen Firestone do a warranty replacement once and that was more of a courtesy than an actual covered issue
Question: What is the length
Answer: If you turn it one way the length is 5 foot. If you turn it the other way the length is 15 foot. I think thats what your asking but if not let me know. It is a 5x15 liner.
Question: I just received this and notice that it's covered in a shiny, metallic-looking dust. Is this normal
Answer: Yes it is a normal part of the manufacturing process. Some will have a very light dusting and others may be covered completely. It is normal either way. It is non-toxic and safe for all aquatic life.
