14 best aprs weather stations

APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) weather stations are specialized weather instruments designed to collect and transmit weather data using the APRS network. These stations are commonly used by amateur radio enthusiasts and weather enthusiasts to share real-time weather information. Here's what you should know about APRS weather stations:

  1. Data Collection: APRS weather stations are equipped with various sensors to collect weather-related data. Common sensors include temperature sensors, humidity sensors, barometric pressure sensors, wind speed and direction sensors, rainfall sensors, and solar radiation sensors. Some stations may also include additional sensors like UV index and leaf wetness sensors.

  2. Transmission via APRS: APRS is a digital communication protocol used by amateur radio operators to exchange data over radio frequencies. Weather stations equipped with APRS capabilities can transmit their collected weather data, including temperature, humidity, wind, and more, to APRS networks. This data is then made available to the public in real-time.

  3. Network Coverage: APRS weather stations rely on a network of APRS receivers and digipeaters (digital repeaters) to relay their data to the internet. The coverage area of APRS networks can vary, but it often extends across a wide geographic area, allowing for the collection of weather data from various locations.

  4. Online Access: Weather data collected by APRS weather stations is typically made accessible online through websites and software applications dedicated to APRS. Users can view real-time weather conditions, historical data, and trends for specific locations where APRS weather stations are installed.

  5. Amateur Radio Integration: APRS weather stations are often used by amateur radio operators who are part of the APRS community. These stations can serve multiple purposes, including emergency communications and tracking of assets or vehicles. Weather data is just one aspect of the APRS system.

  6. DIY and Commercial Options: APRS weather stations are available in both DIY (Do It Yourself) and commercial configurations. Some enthusiasts build their own weather stations and integrate APRS transmitters, while others purchase pre-built APRS weather stations from manufacturers.

  7. Public Benefit: APRS weather stations contribute to citizen science and weather monitoring efforts by providing valuable weather data from various locations. This data can be used for weather forecasting, research, and educational purposes.

  8. Storm Tracking: In addition to basic weather data, APRS weather stations can be used to track severe weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and thunderstorms. This information can be crucial for public safety and emergency response.

Overall, APRS weather stations play a valuable role in expanding our understanding of weather patterns and providing real-time weather data to the public and amateur radio communities. They offer a unique and collaborative approach to weather monitoring and data sharing.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use 2 separate display consoles with the ambient weather ws-2902? i'd like to see readings in 2 different areas of the house
Answer: I have two display consoles and it works great. One upstairs and one on ground floor. I can see both on-line and on phone via app. I set alerts in case HVAC issues, which is great benefit as well. I ordered WS-2902A-CONSOLE-KIT which is what you need.
Question: Can it only be line of sight
Answer: Wireless devices transmit a radio frequency (RF) signal, generally in the 400 – 900 MHz range. The manufacturer will rate the maximum transmission distance as line of sight. However, the signal will transmit through walls and other obstructions. The following is a table of reception loss vs. the transmission medium. Each “wall” or obstruction decreases the transmission range by the factor shown below. Medium RF Signal Strength Reduction Glass (untreated) 5-15% Plastics 10-15% Wood 10-40% Brick 10-40% Concrete 40-80% Metal 90-100% RF will not transmit through metal barriers. If you have aluminum siding or a metal roof, it is unlikely the RF signal will transmit through this barrier. RF will not transmit through earth. For example, if the receiver is placed in the basement, and the earth or ground is obstructing the line of sight transmission, it will not receive the signal. Interference can be an issue. In general, wireless internet, phones, security systems and other low power devices have little interference effect. Ham Radio and other high power applications may lose data when transmitting. Helpful Hint: Wireless phones transmit at similar frequencies and power levels as wireless weather devices. If you have a wireless phone (not a cell phone), place the receiver where you would place the weather station receiver and attempt to use the phone where you would place the transmitter. If you can not use the wireless phone, it is unlikely the weather station will work either.
Question: Is the outdoor sensor "hi quality"? I have had 2 Acurite outdoor sensors electronics fail in a 1 Yr. I am a full time Rv'r / camp in any weather
Answer: My Accuwrong failed in the 13th month and support from Accurite was horrible at best. I had an Amibeint for over 10 years but the ws 2902 is not working, they sent me 3 replacement units all with the same issue, NOT TRANSMITTING.
Question: What differentiates this from higher priced options like the ws-1002-wifi? Software connectivity doesn't matter to me. Are the sensors lower quality
Answer: No, they are of equal quality. The console on the WS-1002-WiFi is much nicer with multiple screens and TFT display. This is LCD with color film. The WS-2902 is a very capable unit.

Question: Yesterday’s lightning numbers still show on the console display nearly 24 hours after the lightning stopped. Is this the way it’s supposed to work
Answer: Hello Amazon Customer, The lightning will show on the display for 48 hours after the last lightning strike. If you have any other questions, please contact the AcuRite Support Team via Live Chat, We are happy to assist you. Thank you. Have a great day, Rachell AcuRite Support Team
Question: Is there a way to get a replacement screen for this unit? The one I got, the screen just stopped working one day
Answer: My display froze on the startup screen and would not advance after two years. Tried rebooting and same problem. I chatted with support and learned there is no way to reset the display screen. Cheap electronics for a unit at this price. AcuRite knows this is a problem with several others complaining of the issue. Their only solution was for me to spend another $100 and buy a replacement unit. This is a known issue with the display freezing and not advancing beyond the splash screen.
Question: Does this have memory backup
Answer: Hello Eva 81, This display does not have battery backup however, this display does have an internal memory. If this display loses power, set the date and time again and the display should retrieve your historical data. User questions & answers

Question: the model numbering confuses me: this 2000 model seems to have more features, better screen than the 2902A that Amazon also has? any other differences
Answer: The only external antenna terminals are for AM. You say "dipole", so it sounds like you want to listen to FM. On the other hand, even though the FM antenna is only 22.5 inches long when fully extended, the review here indicates that it works better than the longer antennas of other portable radios (ref. - https://radiojayallen.com/c-crane-cc-3-cc-2e/). All that said, I would rather not take a chance and, instead, get a radio with the same 5 star FM rating (on RadioJayAllen) that has an external FM antenna connection. You can check out the others, but I do own the Sangean HDR-18 and it is a great radio for distant reception on AM and FM. But, it only has one speaker. If you want stereo, you would connect to the REC OUT jack and run it into amplified stereo speakers.
Question: If a portion of the Osprey goes bad, can it be replaced, or do I have to buy the whole thing? For example, the rain gauge goes out
Answer: The CC Radio 2E comes with a Power Cord: AC 120 Volts 60Hz.
Question: Does this weather station sample the peak wind speed every second, and then transmit the data every 16 seconds? Will it record a 3 second wind gust
Answer: People buy 5 or 6 hundred dollar phones and spend a hundred or more on service - that isn't 'free.' I have a dumb phone so my listening is via radio. Nothing will replace an over the air radio in my mind so the one time cost is not a big deal for years and years of listening.
Question: Can I buy a extra screen and have both connected to the sensor? I want one in the house, one in my work shop
Answer: NO , EVEN THE CC RADIO 2 E AND CC RADIO 3 HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM .

User questions & answers

Question: how long do the batteries last on the rain gauge
Answer: The batteries in the main outdoor sensor unit (rain and wind gauges) lasted about a year for me (3 AAA). The battery in the remote temperature sensor lasts longer -- I haven't had to replace it yet. There are batteries in the main indoor display used as backup, but they just maintain connectivity to the sensor if the power goes off so you don't have to do pairing again after power glitches. The display itself normally runs on a 5v power adapter.
Question: What's the truth? what's in the box? does base station run on aa batteries? does it have any remotes? what batteries do they use
Answer: The base station runs off of 5 volt power with an included power supply. The base station uses AA batteries as a backup, but the display goes dark without the 5 volt power applied. The package includes the two remotes shown in the picture and they use AA batteries.
Question: Is it Atomic, and does it have an adaptor plug, Please. Thanks
Answer: Time and date are updated from the National Institute of Standards and Technology servers via your wi-fi connection. Without a wi-fi connection, you must set time and date manually. The unit comes with a 5V power supply. Battery is only used for backup and will not power the display and wi-fi.
Question: Could someone post a link with instruction how to link this unit to a Weather Undeground account
Answer: I tried many times and failed. I contacted La Crosse and they told me that the C83100 is not compatible with Weather Underground. So, I guess it is not possible to join the network. Here is the response: "The C83100 is not compatible with weather underground. I apologizes for the inconvenience."

User questions & answers

Question: does it have to be next to a pc and plugged in or can it be on a wireless network
Answer: It is not wireless. But you can buy a wireless device from there website but it is expensive.
Question: Does the USB have to plug into the monitor? If so, can I purchase an additional monitor? Is there a model that has a rain guage but is wireless? I don't want to have to stick the monitor in the computer room, but I want to be able to check on my iphone... Any suggestions
Answer: You have to plug the USB into your computer if you want to update actively online, and you can purchase as many monitors as you want. If you didn't want to have to plug it into your computer, you'd have to get the Bridge unit off the Acurite website to upload directly through your router.
Question: Does the 01036 give the high and low temperatures of the day
Answer: Yes, it does. For us, the high temperature is overstated because the unit is in an open, unshaded area, and we live in a warm climate. I don't like the fact that the rain, wind and temperature gauges are all in one unit, because for rain and wind, the unit needs to be in the open, but that means the temperature ends up showing too hot because it's in the sun. Right now it's 69, per my old gauge that's in the shade, and per my phone app and the radio, but the AcuRite says it's 88, which is far off.
Question: Can I add the bridge unit to this unit
Answer: From what I've found, you have to order the bridge unit separately directly from AcuRite. I got this as a gift for someone and it pisses me off that you need an EXTRA piece of equipment to get your info on your computer, tablet or smartphone. AcuRite definitely should have included that tidbit in their info about this product.

User questions & answers

Question: Replacing batteries on a roof-mounted unit is a pain. I have power there, so can it be modified easily
Answer: You can convert "anything" battery powered to a AC converted application. Just match your voltage and amperage and seal the hole wire comes through. Easy. Just find a wall wart to match, solder additional lead wires, as required for length. Heat shrink the soldered connection. Given the 4 AA required, and I don't have this unit, my guess is something 5-6 volts with about 800 -1000 mA would work, just check the stats on it.
Question: I know the manual says batteries in the display are for backup only, but does anyone know about how long it can survive on batteries
Answer: I bought mine in 2016 & just had to change the batteries today 2/28/2020
Question: What is the maximum distance between the outside unit and the display? Does the sensor need to be in the shade
Answer: The distance is 330 ft. However be careful where you place the display from the station. Walls and other things can weaken the signal. It depends on what your house is made of. My house is primarily wood. The signal has no problem reaching the other end of my house (about 150 ft I believe). Also don't place the display near computers or radios or other electronic devices. It can cause interference with your station. Now the outside station it self is does not need shading. I actually recommend you place the station as high as possible (like on a pole on your roof, if you can't, place it no lower than 5ft-6ft from the ground) This ensures that your wind readings are accurate. The thermometer and hydrometer sensors are in the sensor and a internal fan circulates air past the sensors from outside, allowing the temperature readings to stay normal in the sun. Also make sure that station is in a wide open area with nothing around the sensor that could block the wind reaching the station. Typically I would say 50 ft from obstacles but I'm not sure how close. A lot of writing a know but hope this helps you!
Question: Is this model a true color display, unlike the 01036's monochrome display with a color template
Answer: The display looks as it is shown in the picture. It is a color transparent overlay that the data is displayed on. It is bright and easy to read.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this unit have the ability to send its data to a central weather service-- such as Weather Underground? If so, anything additionally needed
Answer: I believe that if there is a computer connection on the readout, the file created in your computer may be in a format that can be sent. You would have to download from the unit and see what you get and see if the weather service could use the file. There used to be local weather nets that took data from private sources.
Question: highest recordable wind speed
Answer: According to the book.2 to 180 mph2 to 156 knots1 to 80 m/s3 to 290 km/hHowever if you are in a hurricane/tornado and you get a 180MPH wind I would bet whatever supporting structure the unit was on would be somewhere down the road.
Question: does this have to hook up to your comp? my bro doesn't have mac
Answer: you don't have to hook it up to a computer but that is where most of the bars and graphs are. otherwise you do get yearly and monthly, daily amounts of rain ,wind, etc from the base unit.
Question: Looking to get a weather station to mount to my roof/side that is networkable and can access via phone app/web interface. recommendations
Answer: You can upload to WeatherLink.com and access your data on your computer or smartphone with WeatherLink mobile app. You do need a Davis data logger to do this, as well as the station.

Question: Is it possible to set an alert for barometric pressure, such as a low threshold alert

Answer: No, not video footage. Temperatures, rainfall and wind yes
Question: does it show barometric pressure without the app
Answer: The weather station does show barometric pressure.
Question: Does the rain gauge need to be brought in during the winter
Answer: This is the second LaCrosse station for me. I never brought the rain gauge in with the first one, and it seems to "weather the elements" just fine. It may fill up with snow, but as it melts, the gauge will still measure the water as rain that runs through it.

User questions & answers

Question: How much does the entire 5 and 1 sensor assembly weigh?? I want to get one and bring it to the mountains with me but it cant be too heavy to pack arou
Answer: Hello Amazon Customer, The 5in1 sensor will weigh approximately 4 pounds. The dimensions for the product follow: 10.8-inches Height x 5.6-inches Width x 13.8-inches Depth. If you have any other questions, please contact the AcuRite Support Team via Live Chat, we are happy to assist you. Thank you. Have a great day, Rachell AcuRite Support Team
Question: Is there a way to upload data wirelessly, via a wifi link, to weather underground, for instance
Answer: I have a Raspberry PI running weewx that allows me to send data to Weather Underground. My "indoor" display has a USB connector that I cable up to the Raspberry PI, and the PI transfers the data via wifi to my wireless router and then over the Internet to Weather Underground. Weewx *might* have options to send to other weather services but I'm not sure. Since weewx is written in Python it may also run on other hardware besides the PI but again I'm not sure if that is the case.
Question: what is difference between model 0614 and
Answer: Hello fitz, Model 06014 is only the 5in1 sensor. This does not come with a display to monitor the station. Model 01512 has both a display and the 5in1 sensor. Model 01512 will come with a single solar panel on the sensor and 06014 is a dual PRO+ sensor. A PRO+ is recommended in areas that are excessively sunny to provide more power to the aspirating fan on the inside of the sensor. This allows the sensor to sit in direct sunlight and read accurately. If you have any other questions, please contact the AcuRite Support Team via Live Chat, we are happy to assist you. Thank you. Have a great day, Rachell AcuRite Support Team
Question: does this unit offer the lightning tracker? Does it say how far away lightning is

Question: when will the lightning sensor be fixed? It shows 100's of lightning strikes when it sunny and clear, and I am using Alkaline batteries
Answer: There is a wire routing issue in some early units that causes the asperating fan to activate the lightning sensor. I had to send mine in for it. It sucks to send it in, but they paid shipping and the fix is covered under warranty.
