User questions & answers

Question: Does it work with bluebird nuggets
Answer: Yes
Question: Will it work for sunflower seeds
Answer: Our mix is Sam's brand, a (40 pound bag), mostly sunflower seeds, even has broken peanuts and some fruit in the mix so sunflower seeds are no problem in ours. This feeder don't have to be removed from it's hanging place, just push the button to raise the roof and pour the seeds in. Ours is 1.5 years old and in Fla and is still fine.
Question: Doesn’t thetray get wet when it rains
Answer: The tray doesn't get wet when it rains. I have lots of birds when it rains. I like this feeder better than any other one I have had.
Question: Does it have a hook to hang it by or do I have to purchase additional item
Answer: There is a closed loop so a hook is not needed, but it really depends on where you are hanging it. The tree branch my feeder is on is very thick, so I use a hook. This is the hook I use http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000HHM43W?cache=ca2fa0ab5f9026c637a6d291178931c6#ref=mp_s_a_1_1&qid=1393265549&sr=8-1 there are 2 sizes available
Question: Does the tray have holes in it so if water does get in it drips out? I'm concerned about the tray collecting water and moldy seeds
Answer: This is probably the best feeder I have for keeping seeds from getting moldy. I use it for golden safflower and it dries out quickly if it gets wet or snowed on. The tray does have plenty of holes but is shallow so sometimes there is a small amount of build up of wet seed to wipe off but very easy to do.
Question: I have a problem with morning doves eating the safflower seed that I put out for cardinals. Does anyone know if doves can sit on this feeder
Answer: Carefully wire the mesh up so that the sitting area is shorter. I did this , little by little, until I got to the height that the morning dives could NOT get on the feeder. Cardinals and smaller birds can still easily feed. Also use safflower seed which eliminates alot of unwanted birds!
Question: Is this supposed to be squirrel proof
Answer: Or.....you can put a squirrel feeder for ears of corn nearby so the squirrels have some place to feed.
Question: Does this feeder work with mixed bird seed? Or only with black oil sunflower seed
Answer: No. I only use it for black oil sunflower seed. If you use mixed bird seed then the seed will all fall out from the large holes.Several times the squirrels will climb onto the top and tilt it but the sunflower seed will not fall out. Also, it really is squirrel-proof cause the squirrels can only get one seed at a time since the top locks.I love this feeder - it is the best for all birds!

Need for Clearance

Remember it’s a squirrel’s weight that triggers the closing mechanism. If a squirrel can reach over from a nearby foothold and avoid placing his weight on the feeder, he can access the birdseed. To overcome this problem, allow for at least 18 in./47 cm of clearance around the feeder. This will force the squirrel to climb onto the feeder and trigger the closing mechanism.

User questions & answers

Question: How much does the feeder weigh
Answer: Empty it weighs 2.36 pounds, filled with black oil sunflower seeds it weighs 4.30 pounds I see the description says it will hold 3.4 pounds of seeds. I am assuming that they are speaking of mixed bird seed. This product works exactly as described. Squirrels will swing from it occasionally. They tire of it very fast.
Question: what types of birds can feed from this model
Answer: We have Cardinals, Gold Finchs, House Finches, Purble Finches, Black cap Chickadees as well as a wide variety of other birds. The birds that you attract will largely depend on the feed that you use. I always use high quality feed and avoid the super market or any no name brand. I often mix my own blends such as black oil sunflower seed, safflower, and sunflower seed. I use this blend in a number of my feeders and find that it attracts a large variety of birds. Lately I have been using a quality blend that includes peanuts, sunflower kernels, safflower seeds, Pistachios, hulled pumpkin seeds and a variety of fruit pieces. This has been very well recieved by a number of birds so I continue its use. The point I am making is that to be successful in attracting birds a number of factors should be considered such as quality feed, quality feeders, clean feeders and locations that the birds feel safe to visit. This feeder is an outstanding feeder that is well made, easy to fill and clean and a joy to use. It is also enjoyable to watch the squirrels try and fail to get at the seed. I highly recommend any of the feeders from this brand. I have a number of different models from them and they all outperform other feeders. I think that you will be very pleased with your purchase and will enjoy many years of enjoyable use.
Question: what is it made of
Answer: an inner chamber holds the feed, with the holes for feeding lining up with the holes in the outer metal mesh covering. The Outer metal mesh covering is hung from a spring which, when weight greater than a bird or two is applied, pulls down and decorative metal leaves cover the feed holes from the obvious, far too heavy, intruder. It has solved our squirrel pilfering problem and cut our bird feed expenses by 2/3!! It really works.
Question: How do you fill the feeder without seed escaping through the feeder holes
Answer: I set the feeder down in the bag or bucket of seed so that the seeds that fall out of the holes simply fall back into the bag.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this feeder work keeping small chipmunks out
Answer: We have two of these feeders and last night I witnessed several rats waiting to take their turns to eat directly from the feeder perches. Yes I'm talking about large common rats. I was baffled and disappointed to discover the hard way that the rats can get the seed no problem! The rat was hanging upside down off the outside of the feeder with it's head in the feeder hole. We have a squirrel that comes every day to eat the droppings (which is what we thought rats might be doing) but the squirrel must weigh more than rats since it hasn't ever been successful at getting food from the feeder. The bummer about this kind of feeder as well is that you can't hang a seed catcher underneath (the weight of the seed catcher would close the feeder holes) so you can't keep the ground clean (which is the other thing we need to figure out to keep the rats away). If I had to do it again I would buy a Woodlink Absolute II with a seed tray to catch the waste. I wish I had figured that out before we bought two of these Squirrel-proof feeders.
Question: Would this feeder work well for feeding thistle seed
Answer: Yes it works for all seed types! I love this feature, I actually have three of them in different sizes. I used to have to feed the birds every day because of the squirrels. now I feed them one or two times a week
Question: Has anyone tried using a soft, flowing peanut butter like Smucker's in this feeder
Answer: I'm not certain what this question means, but allow me to wing a guess and respond. My guess is that you don't really want to deny the squirrels, and let the birds have all that seedy bounty. Actually, the feeder does work as advertised and, at first, I was amused at the antics of the squirrels that were always thwarted by this remarkable feeder. Then, I actually noticed how the system really works. The birds get all they want, but they are very messy eaters. A lot of seeds fall to the ground, and the squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits and other larger species get their fill as well. It's fun and satisfying to see equality really happening at the feeder. Amazingly, they all seem to get along, and all go "home" happy!
Question: How much seed does this feeder hold
Answer: A couple cups. The "standard" size holds about a quart. Be aware that if you're providing black oil seeds (which our Northwest birds like best) that they may get hung up and have to be pushed down. This has not happened with the standard size. (I now use the mini for providing other kinds of seeds.)

User questions & answers

Question: Does it deter chipmunks
Answer: No it does not deter chipmunks but I love this feeder. We placed a small baffle under feeders which solved the chipmunk issue.
Question: Male cardinals aren't using the perch. They just sit below the feeder eating off the ground. Female Cardinals use it. Any idea why
Answer: I have the same problem. Even with the optional Cardonal ring, they still won't use it. I think the feeding ports are too small for them to comfortably use. The fool proof way to prevent squirrels from eating your bird seed is to use Safflower seeds. They have all the nutrition of sunflower seeds, all varieties of sang birds love them (including woodpeckers) AND THE SQUIRRELS WILL NOT TOUCH THEM! I wish someone would have told me this before I spent $$$$ over the years trying to find a squirrel proof feeder. You can buy a 50 lb.. bag on Amazon for about $53 with free shipping. That comes out to about $1.06 a pound. Get an inexpensive feeder that cardinals will use and your problems are solved!
Question: How often will I have to refill this feeder on average if I have a fair number of birds in the area and what cost would that entail
Answer: Not trying to sound obvious, but it depends on the number and type of birds. My feeders in Houston draw Cardinals, Mockingbirds, Jays and Woodpeckers - hungry birds, plus lots of Sparrows and Carolina threshers. I have to refill the feeder about every 5 days with this crew. My feeder in Brenham also draws lots of birds, but smaller ones, and I only have to refill it every 7-8, sometimes 10 days. In the winter months, it will have to be refilled more often, of course.
Question: The tension doesn't seem to deter rats...I don't know if this can be adjusted...I feel bad for the birds...but I took the feeder down today
Answer: I have not had rats try to get the bird seed. I have had it for 3 years, the spring in the tension got loose after too many squirrel attempts. What I found is that the cardinal ring weighed it down and the birds could not get to the seed. The customer care sent me a new spring mechanism and it works great now, ring and all.

Product features

How It works?

Openings in the bottom section of the feeder (shroud) align with seed ports, providing birds access to the seed. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the shroud down, closing the seed ports. Squirrels and large birds are foiled but not harmed in any way.

The Closing Mechanism

Use the feeder with the factory setting before making any adjustments.

To increase the adjustment setting, rotate the transparent cartridge clockwise. The red line will move down from the previous setting. This increases the weight required to close access to the seed.

To decrease the adjustment setting, turn the cartridge counter clockwise. The red line will move up from the previous setting. This decreases the weight required to close access to the seed.

Where to Locate your Plus

You can locate this bird feeder anywhere and be squirrel free. Position it to get great close-up views of your favorite birds. Hang your Squirrel Buster Plus over a window, in a tree, on a deck, a fence, in your garden, on the side of your house, from a rain trough or over sliding doors. Use brackets, extension hooks and tree hooks to hang your feeder at the recommended clearance. Hooks and brackets are available at birding stores, garden centers and hardware supply stores.

Need for Clearance

Remember it’s a squirrel’s weight that triggers the closing mechanism. If a squirrel can reach over from a nearby foothold and avoid placing his weight on the feeder, he can access the birdseed. To overcome this problem, allow for at least 18 in/47 cm of clearance around the feeder. This will force the squirrel to climb onto the feeder and trigger the closing mechanism.

Taking apart your Plus

Squirrel Buster Plus components are designed to be assembled and dismantled easily by hand, without any tools.

Need For Clerance

Remember it’s a squirrel’s weight that triggers the closing mechanism. If a squirrel can reach over from a nearby foothold and avoid placing his weight on the feeder, he can access the birdseed. To overcome this problem, allow for at least 18 in./47 cm of clearance around the feeder. This will force the squirrel to climb onto the feeder and trigger the closing mechanism.

Weight Adjustable

The patented adjustable spring mechanism controls how much weight the metal mesh shroud will support, allowing the birds to feed. Any additional weight will activate the closing mechanism. Patent # 6,543,384 B2

Seed Ventilation System

Transparent seed tubes trap solar energy, and conventional seed tube designs block the escape of the heated air. Our patented Seed Ventilation System permits humidity and hot air to escape through the vents at the top of the feeder and replaces it with fresh air. Bird food remains fresher, attracting more wild birds.

Truly Squirrel-proof

The weight of an adult squirrel automatically closes the seed ports, denying access to the seed but not harming the squirrels in any way. Also effective on large birds.

No Tools Required

Our feeders are designed to be dismantled by hand into individual components without the use of tools. This allows for easy cleaning and filling.

User questions & answers

Question: Would this work well on the ground with wires removed? Would it still drain on a patio this way
Answer: yes, it would work that way. Of course you'll have to maintain it, i.e., clean it now and again to keep the drain holes open.
Question: Does it come larger than 12X
Answer: Apparently not this particular offer
Question: can this be mounted on a pole
Answer: No. The metal mesh base is removable, so there would be no way to mount it to a pole. You could hang it from a shepherd's crook mounted in the ground, however.
Question: What are the dimensions
Answer: as it is clearly stated in the item's info... 2.25x12x12...

Tray Feeders

Due to the open design of the tray feeder, it is perhaps one of the most versatile feeder styles. Ample space attracts larger birds like Jays and Mourning Doves which otherwise rarely visit other feeder styles. The tray format also enables feeding the widest variety of seed, from the typical sunflower seed to much more atypical feed like dried fruit, in-shell peanuts, and whole corn, allowing birders to attract a wider variety of birds to their yard.

Made with naturally insect and rot resistant premium cedar, this feeder is constructed with rust-free hardware including stainless steel screws, powder-coated galvanized steel seed tray, and a vinyl coated steel hanging cable. The patented removable Fresh Seed tray encourages water drainage and air flow, keeping seed fresh and extending the life of the feeder while also making it easier to clean and maintain.

Removable Fresh Seed Tray

The patented seed tray lifts out of the feeder for easy cleaning. Routinely cleaning your feeder between refills is important to help keep birds healthy and prolong the life of your feeder.

Water Drainage and Air Circulation

The seed tray's perforated design allows water to drain and air to circulate, keeping seed fresher longer and preventing feeder rot- prolonging the life of your feeder.

Easy Fill

The tray feeder design is the easiest to refill with less spilling and mess! This also means that it can be used to feed a wider variety of seeds than other feeder types.

Constructed with Rust-Free Hardware

Made from premium insect and rot resistant Cedar and constructed using stainless steel hardware and vinyl-coated steel cables to prevent rusting and prolong the life of the feeder. Nature's Way Bird Products' wooden feeders are dipped in Nature's Shield to help prevent discoloration, water damage, and mold and mildew.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a way to mount this to a stand versus hanging it
Answer: No
Question: What do I need to hang these tray please show the picture so I can buy both at the same time thanks
Answer: Your feeder should come with two hanging cables already attached that you use to hang the feeder. If your feeder doesn’t have these hanging cables, I would suggest a return to Amazon/vendor.
Question: Is there a way to mount it to a stand versus hanging it
Answer: you could, but it would be lot's of work. you'd need to drill holes in one side and run screws through the feeder into your stand......;o( I think you'd be better off finding a different feeder.
Question: is the screen fine enough for millet to stay on the top
Answer: I'm not sure. I use Wild Birds Unlimited No Mess Plus Seed. It includes some very small seeds and some of them fall through the holes. I don't use millet so I don't know how the size compaes.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it keep black birds out
Answer: Dead Bug Brew will not kill bagworms once they have formed the bag. Once the bag is formed they are protected from any insecticides and would need to manually plucked off the tree and dropped into a bucket of soapy water.
Question: Can cardinals eat from this feeder
Answer: Hi Dana, Captain Jack's label states that the product is harmful to bees, if the bees come in contact within three hours of the application of the product to the plant. Supposedly, after Captain Jacks dries (after the three hour time passes) it should be safe. I only use this inside my pool cage where there are no bees. Good luck. J
Question: How do you get the cover off to put the feed in
Answer: 1 tablespoon of Deadbug to 1 quart of water (1 oz = 2 tablespoons) mix only the amount needed for a single treatment. In vegetable gardens it is recommended to use not more than 3 gallons of spray for a 1000 square-foot area. Also for example when growing leafy vegetables the maximum number of applications per season would be 6, minimum days to wait before reapplying 4 days, minimum days to wait from last application to harvest 1 day. This product is toxic to bees exposed to treatment for three hours following treatment. Do not apply this pesticide to blooming, pollen shedding or nectar producing parts of plants if the bees may forage forage on the plants during this time period. This product is toxic to aquatic invertebrates. More information than you asked for :)I hope it helps.
Question: There are no reviews. Is this feeder worth the money
Answer: Active ingredient: Imidacloprid 0.22% Other ingredients 99.78% Total= 100%

User questions & answers

Question: What I should use to replace the plastic piece between the pole and bird house? Mine is cracked causing the feeder to shift
Answer: The plastic end cap was lost long ago. Without the piece, the upper food chamber will be too loose, wobble and tilt. To maintain the fit of the feeder on the vertical post, II wrap the upper end pipe around its circumference with 1 inch widw duct tape. I add enough layers till the fit is snug. Feeder stays in proper position.
Question: Is this bird feeder good for cardinals and larger sunflower seeds
Answer: I find the feeder awkward for larger birds like cardinals and jays. The pegs are relatively short and the openings are not offset, so several large birds try to land and give up or are able to land and have a hard time reaching into the feeder. We have one male cardinal that has figured it out, but his female mate can’t feed on it and waits to pick up seeds from the ground. Smaller birds love it, however.
Question: how long is the pole
Answer: The pole comes in 3 sections of 24 inches that fit inside one another. Two of these sections lose 2 inches per pole because they fit inside one another. Also, this completed pole section loses 10 inches because it sits inside the baffle - the bottom skirt that is green in the picture. When all is said and done and the entire assembly is buried in the ground 8 inches or so, the total height is 70 inches from the ground to the top of the feeder. At first, I thought this was too short. However, this feeder holds a great deal of food and another section would make it too top heavy. I highly recommend this feeder. Squirrels and chipmunks climb the pole but only get inside the green baffle / skirt and no further.
Question: How tall is it
Answer: It depends how deep you set the pole... but mine ends up at about 5 feet from ground to cap.
Question: Does this come with a hook for hanging
Answer: Yes, the hook is attached to the hanging cables.
Question: What are the actual sizes of the 2 available models? naggplat and ggplat. from what i see there is less than an inch difference between them
Answer: GGPLATT is 12.6"x12.8"x2.1" and NAGGPLAT is 12.8"x12.9"x2.3. When I purchased the NAGGPLATT, the price was about the same as GGPLATT. I love this platform feeder, especially during cold months. I have noticed the birds prefer this feeder and I have lots of different types of feeders. Not sure if I would get the smaller one, though. I do know the squirrels and chipmunks also love this feeder and I know the seed does not topple out when they jump up on the larger feeder. Not sure how the smaller one would do with the critters. Great material and I am sure you will really like it.
Question: what's are the dimensions of the feeder box for model GGPLAT
Answer: 12 3/4 X 12 3/4. X 2 1/2.
Question: DOes the scrren come out easily for cleaning
Answer: The screen doesn't come out. But it doesn't need to. I just flip it over and tap on the bottom to dump the leftover seed out. The birds pick through it on the ground. Most of what I find leftover is seed casings. If I had to clean it, I would just run the hose over it. I haven't found anything in the tray that is nasty; no poop. Its hung from the bottom of the deck above my patio. The squirrels can't get to it and the birds like it. I love this feeder. Its made of plastic so it won't rot like wood.
Question: Is the closure weight adjustable and if so, how
Answer: Take a twist tie and attach the top of the spring to the cage- that increases the springiness
Question: Can little birds go inside and get stuck
Answer: No. The cage is not room enough for a bird to go in and get stuck. The birds manage the cage easily. Sadly it is not perfectly squirrel-proof but it does limit the amount that they can take out. I have had mine for many months and the birds are totally fine.
Question: Will cardinals trigger the ports to close? I want a feeder that my cardinals can feed from
Answer: I'm not sure. The seed I had last year attracted lots of chickadees and other small birds. I don't think cardinals will have a problem, though. They're still too light to push the feeder ports closed.
Question: Some had a problem with the spring release opening. How did you remedy that
Answer: The issue was when a squirrel tried for the food the release closed the holes like it supposed to. But wouldnt return after the squirrel left. The design is such when closed the opening is smaller closing on the stopping pin and grabbing so I put in a stopper so it wont go all the way down
