14 best squirrel proof feeders
Squirrel-proof feeders are designed to prevent squirrels from accessing bird feed, allowing you to attract and feed birds in your backyard without unwanted visitors. These feeders typically incorporate features that make it challenging for squirrels to reach the bird food, while still providing easy access for birds. Here are some common features of squirrel-proof feeders:
Baffle Systems: Many squirrel-proof feeders use baffles, which are usually dome-shaped structures above or below the feeding ports. These baffles make it difficult for squirrels to climb down onto the feeder.
Weight-Activated Mechanisms: Some feeders have weight-sensitive perches or feeding ports. When a squirrel or other heavy animal lands on the perch, the feeder closes, preventing access to the food. Birds, being lighter, are not affected by this mechanism.
Caged Designs: Caged feeders have wire or mesh structures surrounding the feeding ports, creating a barrier that squirrels can't navigate. Birds, with their smaller size, can easily enter and access the food.
Adjustable Perches: Feeders with adjustable perches allow you to set the perches to a length that is too short for squirrels but suitable for birds.
Metal Construction: Squirrel-proof feeders are often made from durable materials like metal, which is more resistant to damage from chewing or clawing.
Hanging Designs: Hanging feeders high off the ground or suspended from a thin wire can help deter squirrels, as they have a harder time reaching the feeder without a solid surface to climb.
Seed Variety: Some feeders are designed to dispense specific types of seeds that are less attractive to squirrels but still appealing to birds.
Smooth Surfaces: Feeders with smooth or slippery surfaces can make it challenging for squirrels to get a good grip, preventing them from climbing onto the feeder.
Advanced Technology: Some modern squirrel-proof feeders use technology such as motorized mechanisms or sensors to detect the presence of squirrels and close off access to the food.
By incorporating one or more of these features, squirrel-proof feeders aim to create a bird-friendly environment in your backyard while minimizing the presence of squirrels. Keep in mind that the effectiveness of these feeders may vary, and some persistent squirrels may still find creative ways to access the bird food.

The Need for Clearance!
Remember it is the squirrel’s weight that triggers the closing mechanism. If a squirrel can reach over from a nearby foothold and avoid placing its weight on the feeder, it will be able to access the seed. Allow for at least 18 inches or 47 cm of clearance around the feeder. This will force the squirrel to climb onto the feeder triggering the closing mechanism.
Squirrel Proof
The weight of an adult squirrel automatically closes the seed ports, denying access to the seed but not harming the squirrels in any way.
Chew Proof
All feeder parts exposed to squirrels are made of chew proof metals or RoxResinTM, a remarkable 100% chew proof, waterproof, rustproof and UV stabilized material.
Seed Ventilation System
Transparent seed tubes trap solar energy, and conventional seed tube designs block the escape of the heated air. Our patented Seed Ventilation System permits humidity and hot air to escape through the vents at the top of the feeder and replaces it with fresh air. Bird food remains fresher, attracting more wild birds.
UV Stabilized
All components are UV resistant keeping your feeder looking new.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it deter chipmunks |
Answer: | No it does not deter chipmunks but I love this feeder. We placed a small baffle under feeders which solved the chipmunk issue. |
Question: | Male cardinals aren't using the perch. They just sit below the feeder eating off the ground. Female Cardinals use it. Any idea why |
Answer: | I have the same problem. Even with the optional Cardonal ring, they still won't use it. I think the feeding ports are too small for them to comfortably use. The fool proof way to prevent squirrels from eating your bird seed is to use Safflower seeds. They have all the nutrition of sunflower seeds, all varieties of sang birds love them (including woodpeckers) AND THE SQUIRRELS WILL NOT TOUCH THEM! I wish someone would have told me this before I spent $$$$ over the years trying to find a squirrel proof feeder. You can buy a 50 lb.. bag on Amazon for about $53 with free shipping. That comes out to about $1.06 a pound. Get an inexpensive feeder that cardinals will use and your problems are solved! |
Question: | How often will I have to refill this feeder on average if I have a fair number of birds in the area and what cost would that entail |
Answer: | Not trying to sound obvious, but it depends on the number and type of birds. My feeders in Houston draw Cardinals, Mockingbirds, Jays and Woodpeckers - hungry birds, plus lots of Sparrows and Carolina threshers. I have to refill the feeder about every 5 days with this crew. My feeder in Brenham also draws lots of birds, but smaller ones, and I only have to refill it every 7-8, sometimes 10 days. In the winter months, it will have to be refilled more often, of course. |
Question: | The tension doesn't seem to deter rats...I don't know if this can be adjusted...I feel bad for the birds...but I took the feeder down today |
Answer: | I have not had rats try to get the bird seed. I have had it for 3 years, the spring in the tension got loose after too many squirrel attempts. What I found is that the cardinal ring weighed it down and the birds could not get to the seed. The customer care sent me a new spring mechanism and it works great now, ring and all. |

How It works?
Openings in the bottom section of the feeder (shroud) align with seed ports, providing birds access to the seed. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the shroud down, closing the seed ports. Squirrels and large birds are foiled but not harmed in any way.
The Closing Mechanism
Use the feeder with the factory setting before making any adjustments.
To increase the adjustment setting, rotate the transparent cartridge clockwise. The red line will move down from the previous setting. This increases the weight required to close access to the seed.
To decrease the adjustment setting, turn the cartridge counter clockwise. The red line will move up from the previous setting. This decreases the weight required to close access to the seed.
Where to Locate your Plus
You can locate this bird feeder anywhere and be squirrel free. Position it to get great close-up views of your favorite birds. Hang your Squirrel Buster Plus over a window, in a tree, on a deck, a fence, in your garden, on the side of your house, from a rain trough or over sliding doors. Use brackets, extension hooks and tree hooks to hang your feeder at the recommended clearance. Hooks and brackets are available at birding stores, garden centers and hardware supply stores.

User questions & answers
Question: | How much does the feeder weigh |
Answer: | Empty it weighs 2.36 pounds, filled with black oil sunflower seeds it weighs 4.30 pounds I see the description says it will hold 3.4 pounds of seeds. I am assuming that they are speaking of mixed bird seed. This product works exactly as described. Squirrels will swing from it occasionally. They tire of it very fast. |
Question: | what types of birds can feed from this model |
Answer: | We have Cardinals, Gold Finchs, House Finches, Purble Finches, Black cap Chickadees as well as a wide variety of other birds. The birds that you attract will largely depend on the feed that you use. I always use high quality feed and avoid the super market or any no name brand. I often mix my own blends such as black oil sunflower seed, safflower, and sunflower seed. I use this blend in a number of my feeders and find that it attracts a large variety of birds. Lately I have been using a quality blend that includes peanuts, sunflower kernels, safflower seeds, Pistachios, hulled pumpkin seeds and a variety of fruit pieces. This has been very well recieved by a number of birds so I continue its use. The point I am making is that to be successful in attracting birds a number of factors should be considered such as quality feed, quality feeders, clean feeders and locations that the birds feel safe to visit. This feeder is an outstanding feeder that is well made, easy to fill and clean and a joy to use. It is also enjoyable to watch the squirrels try and fail to get at the seed. I highly recommend any of the feeders from this brand. I have a number of different models from them and they all outperform other feeders. I think that you will be very pleased with your purchase and will enjoy many years of enjoyable use. |
Question: | what is it made of |
Answer: | an inner chamber holds the feed, with the holes for feeding lining up with the holes in the outer metal mesh covering. The Outer metal mesh covering is hung from a spring which, when weight greater than a bird or two is applied, pulls down and decorative metal leaves cover the feed holes from the obvious, far too heavy, intruder. It has solved our squirrel pilfering problem and cut our bird feed expenses by 2/3!! It really works. |
Question: | How do you fill the feeder without seed escaping through the feeder holes |
Answer: | I set the feeder down in the bag or bucket of seed so that the seeds that fall out of the holes simply fall back into the bag. |

Product description
Next time you take a walk in the woods or your local park listen to the variety of beautiful melodies of the winged singers collectively known as songbirds. There are over 4,000 species of songbirds throughout the world. From Blue Jays and Robins to Sparrows, Swallows and Finches, every songbird sings their own unique sound. Now you can enjoy any number of bird species in your own yard by attracting them and not the pesky squirrels with our Squirrel X1 squirrel-proof Songbird Feeder.
Our revolutionary Squirrel X1 squirrel-proof Songbird Feeder protects your birdseed and allows you to feed the birds not the squirrels! Featuring four squirrel-proof feeding ports with long, sturdy perches, the metal sliding sleeve will close all ports simultaneously when a squirrel’s weight is applied to any perch or the roof. The Squirrel X1 can accommodate 4.2 pounds of seed and has a wide mouth for easy filling. The lovely satin nickel finish will complement any outdoor decor and blend in nicely with nature.
- Great defense against squirrels.
- Select the seed to attract your favorite birds.
- Constant food at every port.
- Four integrated metal perches.
- Wide mouth top for easy filling.
Hanging Your Seed Feeder
Feeders can be either hung from a strong branch/shepherd’s hook or they can be pole or post mounted. In any case, select a location that is near enough to tree/bushes that adequate escape cover (from predators) is accessible for your feeding birds. The feeder should be at least four to five feet from the ground, this will help keep it out of reach from marauding raccoons and other critters. Be careful not to place your feeder too close to large windows, this will help prevent collisions on your windows, and this also allows your birds more escape flight routes when predators show up. Take into consideration where you will be typically viewing your birds from, and this line-of-sight is also important for monitoring the seed/nectar levels in your feeders. If you are planning to photograph your feathered friends while they feed, consider a location where there is at least partial sunlight available.
Cleaning the Feeder
Remove locking metal roof by squeezing the plastic tabs located under the rim and lifting. Hand wash with warm water and a mild antibacterial soap. Rinse thoroughly and let dry completely before refilling with seed.

User questions & answers
Question: | I need a replacement piece. The wire it hangs from broke. How do i get another |
Answer: | This is a great bird feeder, to bad the wire broke. I would go down to the hardware store and get some wire and repair it yourself. good luck |
Question: | Wet, mouldy seeds get trapped in the bottom of the cylinder, where the springs are located. Is there any way to take it apart to clean under there |
Answer: | Seeds get in the bottom, where the springs are located, and then get moist and rot. I think the small birds push the seeds in through the slots where the perch arms swing up.I continued to work on this and found a way to clean everything out. Turn the plastic cylinder upside down and get someone to hold it firmly, or grip it between your knees. Push on the bottom metal cap until the plastic tabs on each side of it are visible. Push in on those tabs and then lift off the cap. If the cap is stuck, wash it with hot water to free it up. When you get the cap off, wash everything in hot soapy water, rinse, and then push the cap back on until the two tabs pop back into their slots. It's worth doing, because this is a great feeder and seems to be quite squirrel-proof. |
Question: | This offer says it is for a quantity of four.... is that four feeders |
Answer: | When I ordered it, I only got one. I think it's talking about 4 spots for birds to feed. I just want to let you know that I threw this feeder away. Within 1 week of having it, little finches were actually going inside the feeder when the top emptied and were getting stuck inside. It was extremely hard to get them out without breaking it. Finally, we broke it when the 5th finch got stuck because it was a very hot day and it was nearly dead. We also threw another squirrel proof feeder away because a little birds leg got stuck in the leaf design on the outside of the feeder and we didn't notice it and it died. It must have suffered terribly. We have had many rat and squirrel problems at our feeders. Believe it or not, the best hanging feeder I founds was a cheap, plastic, clear and red color feeder from Walmart. Rats and squirrels can't hang on to get to the food. It's long and narrow and has about 8 feeding stations and there are no wires and designs to get stuck or hang on. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Is it big enough for red birds to feed |
Answer: | Not only is is big enough for Cardinals, we even had two Blackbirds, and a Woodpecker who were eating out of it! |

- SUET CAKE CAPACITY: Squirrel-X4 bird feeder can accommodate two suet cakes
- DETER LARGE 'BULLY' BIRDS: Bird feeder prevents the big bully birds from accessing the suet allowing the food for smaller birds
- DURABILITY: Steel lid and powder-coated weather-resistant steel cage construction
User questions & answers
Question: | Hi, I just received this squirrel proof bird feeder. How do I open it up to get the suet in |
Answer: | remove the cover by unscrewing the knob---the small woodpeckers love it and the larger woodpeckers cling to the outside and can reach the suet by stretching their necks----it's the best! |
Question: | Can this be pole mounted |
Answer: | There isn't a good way that I can see where this would sit stable on top of a pole. There isn't a way a shaft could run up through it. For mine, I got one of those cement block like are used under decks for footing that have a metal bracket attached. I bolted a 4x4 to it then hung a hanger off the 4x4 to hang this from. If you need a wider base for stability I gorilla-glued an 18" square patio block to the bottom of the cement footer. Works great, and can be moved around the property as needed. |
Question: | Does this feeder keep starlings out, or can they reach in far enough to get at the suet |
Answer: | Unfortunately starlings were still able to stick their heads in just far enough to reach the suet in mine. It really needs to be an inch or two larger in diameter. However, to fix it I put the suet a little higher in the cage (put a small piece of wood under it to raise it an inch or less) and then put only one suet cake in it. On the side which had the suet cake I put a piece of wire across each cage square. You could also use small zip ties too. Kind of a pain but it worked very well. My Carolina Wrens zip right through the cage openings on the other side of the feeder and hop over to the suet. |
Question: | Are you saying that the green top is actuality screwed down tightly and squirrels are unable to 'jimmy' it up and off |
Answer: | It if was screwed finger tight they wouldn't be able to get it off. I would actually advise possibly attaching a swivel to the top ring in case the wind could be spinning it. |

Product description
A favorite of almost every backyard feeder bird. They have easy to crack, thin shells and can be offered in a wide variety of feeder types, like platform, tube, and hopper feeders. These seeds also have a high fat content that is perfect for giving birds energy all year long, especially in winter.
This Yankee Flipper squirrel-proof feeder is the ultimate feeder for keeping your feathered friends fed, and the furred fiends hungry. Let's talk about the basics first. The sturdy polycarbonate feeding chamber is a whopping 4-3/4 inches in diameter and 21 inches long, giving you a break between refills--and ensuring that squirrels can't hang down from the top to reach seed. The four feeding chambers are easily accessible via the perch ring, and the interior of the chamber is designed to direct seed into the seed ports.
Now, for the fun stuff: The birdfeeder features an encased motor and rechargeable (and replaceable) batteries. When you receive the feeder, simply charge the batteries overnight, hang the feeder from its looped bail wire, and prepare to be amazed (and entertained!). The motor is connected to the weight activated perch ring--birds will not set it off, even larger species like woodpeckers and cardinals. But the minute a squirrel hops onto the perch, the motor is triggered and the feeder begins spinning, taking the squirrel for a whirl before it loses its grip and is thrown (gently) from the perch. It's a humanitarian way to deal with persistent squirrels--there are no shocks or poisons to hurt them, simply a wild ride that they won't be inclined to repeat. Birds are free to eat without disruption, and your family will get a kick out of watching squirrels go for their rides. There's a lifetime warranty on the feeder body and a one-year warranty on the motor and battery charger. --Ariel Meadow Stallings
- SQUIRREL-PROOF: The motorized perch ring is designed to start spinning under the weight of a squirrel to 'flip' the squirrel off the bird feeder
- CAPACITY: Tube bird feeder holds up to five pounds of birdseed and has four feeding ports

User questions & answers
Question: | how do you remove the bottom to charge the unit |
Answer: | Hi Vickie. Holding the feeder upside down, turn the base counterclockwise. It will rotate slightly and then separate from the green piece that has the feeder holes in it. The charging receptacle is in the top of the post. Hope this helps. Ken |
Question: | Is this at all water-resistant? I live in Florida and we have a great deal of rainfall. This is a big investment to see ruined in the first storm |
Answer: | If there is going to be freezing rain or snow (unlikely in FL) or very heavy, windy rainfall, then it's recommended that you turn off the power (there is a switch right on the feeder). If it's really bad, you can pull out the core (the battery). You just twist the perch and the perch/core combo comes out. You also do this when you need to recharge it. You can leave the actual feeder outside--just remove the battery. Having said that, we are on our second Yankee Flipper after about 15 years with the first one! That first version had no ability to remove the core or turn off, and yet it still lasted that long through Chicago-area rain/snow/wind. The only reason we replaced it is that the battery would no longer charge. That's a really long time for something to work unfailingly! You can always buy a baffle to put over the top if you feel the need. They come in plexiglass, metal or plastic. Hope that helps. |
Question: | What do people think about all of the seed that falls out of the large feeding ports |
Answer: | If you check the actions of the birds on the feeders with your binoculars, studying them very carefully, I think you will find that most of the seed landing on the ground has been pitched out by the birds themselves and is not falling out of the feeder. I have watched this action myself. I think Mourning Doves are not well understood but they are actually quite beneficial to us. They eat all the weed seed they can find on the ground and it does not pass through their digestive systems to get deposited somewhere else. They consume grit, tiny sharp edged pieces of rock, that serve to grind up the seeds they eat the seeds thus turning the seed into energy for them rather than new weeds "for" us. I use one of these feeders myself with a tray attached underneath. The tray catches a high percentage of discarded seed and it is often eaten by other birds. A feeder tray pays for itself if you want to reduce your offerings to doves and squirrels. |
Question: | Not only do I have squirrels but I have a raccoon. Do you think this feeder will withstand the weight of a raccoon |
Answer: | I am not sure. It's a very sturdy feeder and squirrels are no problem as once the spinner threw them off they didn't try again. I would suppose that if the raccoons could get it on the ground, they could pry the lid off. You might try wiring the lid on, but they would probably roll it around on the ground until the seeds fell out. You might try suspending it from a small steel cable away from anything they could climb on to reach it. If the feeder remains hanging, I think you may have a chance of keeping them out. Sorry I am not more raccoon savvy, my daughter fights they all the time at her house because they kill her chickens. |

Yankee Flipper Bird Feeder
The Droll Yankees Yankee Flipper is a motorized bird feeder that allows birds to eat while preventing squirrels from getting a meal. When a squirrel hops onto the feeder's perch ring, the ring begins spinning, taking the squirrel for a whirl before it loses its grip.
The 17-inch seed tube holds 5 pounds of birdseed for fewer refills, and it has four seed ports for accommodating multiple birds. The tube feeder hangs by its stainless steel looped wire that reduces motion to prevent seed spill.
Squirrel-Proof Design
The Yankee Flipper features a perch ring that encourages birds to eat but prevents squirrels from feeding. The ring supports the weight of birds--even larger species like woodpeckers and cardinals--but not squirrels. The weight of a squirrel triggers a motor that causes the perch to spin and the squirrel to lose its grip. To further repel squirrels, the feeder tube is designed to be too wide and long for them to cling to. Also, the heavy, snug-fitting metal cap cannot be lifted by squirrels, so they cannot reach seed inside the feeder.
Large Capacity
The Yankee Flipper can hold up to 5 pounds of birdseed, which means you don’t need to make frequent refills. An internal baffle keeps seed flowing to all four ports, and a large feeder perch allows multiple birds to feed simultaneously. The clear tube helps you keep track of seed levels.
Durable Construction
The Yankee Flipper Bird Feeder is designed for years of use. The durable seed tube is made from UV-stabilized polycarbonate that will not discolor over time, and the feeder's metal components are powder coated in a lovely forest green that will resist chipping and fading.
Seed Recommendations
A variety of birds use the Yankee Flipper, including cardinals, chickadees, finches, flickers, goldfinches, grackles, grosbeaks, jays, juncos, kinglets, nuthatches, redpolls, siskins, sparrows, starlings, titmice, towhees, woodpeckers, and wrens. The Flipper works with mixed seed, peanut chunks, safflower seed, sunflower kernels, and cracked corn, though it works best with sunflower seeds, a favorite of almost every backyard feeder bird.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this feeder work keeping small chipmunks out |
Answer: | We have two of these feeders and last night I witnessed several rats waiting to take their turns to eat directly from the feeder perches. Yes I'm talking about large common rats. I was baffled and disappointed to discover the hard way that the rats can get the seed no problem! The rat was hanging upside down off the outside of the feeder with it's head in the feeder hole. We have a squirrel that comes every day to eat the droppings (which is what we thought rats might be doing) but the squirrel must weigh more than rats since it hasn't ever been successful at getting food from the feeder. The bummer about this kind of feeder as well is that you can't hang a seed catcher underneath (the weight of the seed catcher would close the feeder holes) so you can't keep the ground clean (which is the other thing we need to figure out to keep the rats away). If I had to do it again I would buy a Woodlink Absolute II with a seed tray to catch the waste. I wish I had figured that out before we bought two of these Squirrel-proof feeders. |
Question: | Would this feeder work well for feeding thistle seed |
Answer: | Yes it works for all seed types! I love this feature, I actually have three of them in different sizes. I used to have to feed the birds every day because of the squirrels. now I feed them one or two times a week |
Question: | Has anyone tried using a soft, flowing peanut butter like Smucker's in this feeder |
Answer: | I'm not certain what this question means, but allow me to wing a guess and respond. My guess is that you don't really want to deny the squirrels, and let the birds have all that seedy bounty. Actually, the feeder does work as advertised and, at first, I was amused at the antics of the squirrels that were always thwarted by this remarkable feeder. Then, I actually noticed how the system really works. The birds get all they want, but they are very messy eaters. A lot of seeds fall to the ground, and the squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits and other larger species get their fill as well. It's fun and satisfying to see equality really happening at the feeder. Amazingly, they all seem to get along, and all go "home" happy! |
Question: | How much seed does this feeder hold |
Answer: | A couple cups. The "standard" size holds about a quart. Be aware that if you're providing black oil seeds (which our Northwest birds like best) that they may get hung up and have to be pushed down. This has not happened with the standard size. (I now use the mini for providing other kinds of seeds.) |

The Need for Clearance

Question: | Is it safe for the birds to put a weatherproofing mixture on cedar wood |
Answer: | I rub olive oil or Vaseline into the wood perch every fall and thoroughly wipe it off with paper towel. It's harmful to let birds feathers contact oil or grease as it prevents them from keeping warm but if you wipe it off very well the wood is protected for the winter. |
Question: | Is the perch metal? Or is it a wooden dowel |
Answer: | The perch dowel is metal and very stable. We have a few clever red wing blackbirds who have figured out to stand sideways (not on the perch) and eat, but the small birds do well. Our squirrel was defeated early on and never comes back. |
Question: | What are the dimensions |
Answer: | 8.2 x 12.8 x 15.2 inches as in description above - the description is far down on the page I think the Manufacturer gave description from the larger unit. |
Question: | We are having a problem with the bar that closes sticking and not opening back up after the weight of the squirrel closes it. Any suggestions |
Answer: | We've never had a problem with squirrels hitting the bar (only the cats jumping up at it!). Check the alignment of the metal parts and the adjustment of the spring tension. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what size are the mesh in the cage 1"x2" (for example?) I want to feed peach faced parrots so they need 2" in one direction |
Answer: | The bottom row of holes are 2 3/4" x 1 1/4", the next two rows up are 2" x1 1/4". |
Question: | The birds aren’t coming to this feeder and I have the same seeds as my other popular feeders, why |
Answer: | It took my birds a couple of weeks to come to this feeder. They are suspicious of the cage. Also depends on the size of your birds. I have sparrows, purple finches, titmouse and other small birds. I also have cardinals, blue jays and mockingbirds, but they are all too big for it. It is great for keeping the squirrels out. I don't know what you are feeding, but black oil sunflower seeds seem to be favored by all. |
Question: | In the ad photo it shows hummingbirds eating from the seed feeder. You know there is going to be someone will think its a hummingbird feeder? haha |
Answer: | Doubt that! |
Question: | I see by the photo that Kingfishers use this feeder. Do you fill them with minnows |
Answer: | That's not a Belted Kingfisher. This is a feeder for seed-eaters. The feeder is weak; it works, but squirrels lift the lid to eat the seed. I clipped it closed. Not the greatest but is inexpensive. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Had a similar feeder before; replaced it with this one but now the cardinals can't seem to land on it. Anyone else have this problem |
Answer: | It will take Cardinals a while to get used to a new feeder. It took at least 6 to 8 weeks before they would land on mine. I really like this bird feeder, because squirrels leave it alone but coons sometimes try. |
Question: | Can you hang the feeder instead of putting it on a pole |
Answer: | It hangs easily with the included hanging device. My experience with using it either hanging or pole mounted is the necessity of a squirrel baffle to keep those pesky critters from figuring out how to empty the feeder. Good luck. |
Question: | Is this a 2-sided feeder |
Answer: | Yes it is a 2-sided feeder. Works well. |
Question: | Can this be adjusted to allow Mourning Doves but reject squirrels |
Answer: | Mourning Doves here always eat what’s on the ground, never on the feeder ledge. They aren’t very good flyers, I saw one attempt a landing on top of the feeder but it slid right off it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Regarding the Tipper and Blue Jays...does these deter them |
Answer: | Not sure what a tipper id, but Blue jays don't bother with it. I think there too big! |
Question: | Can it be pole mounted |
Answer: | Ours hangs from a pole that extends out about a foot, makes it more difficult for the squirrel to get to the feeder, and they will try, but it is the best feeder we own. I’m thinking of buying another. You can’t really pole mount it, because the bottom tray drops down when a squirrel puts pressure on it. |
Question: | Do the ports allow a half a peanut (no shell) to pass through |
Answer: | Pass through or get pulled through by the birds, I am not sure but the peanuts do disappear. |
Question: | Mom sent me her feeder to charge it but I don't think she sent everything necessary. What do these parts look like |
Answer: | This model has no charging mechanism, nor is it battery powered. Droll Yankee does sell a battery-powered feeder but this is not it, not the one I recently bought. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the seed cylinder removable? i would like to replace it with my suet ball cylinder which has larger mesh openings |
Answer: | It can not be removed |
Question: | Is it rust resistant/proof |
Answer: | I’ve had it for over a year without rust issues. It’s a rustic finish, so even if it it did start to rust you can’t really see it. |
Question: | What is the most appropriate seed for this feeder? Medium size holes leak out many seeds, but fruit chunks and peanuts block the holes. Thanks |
Answer: | Black sesame seeds |
Question: | Can cardinals, blue jays, or woodpeckers access the feeder |
Answer: | I've seen larger birds like blue jays, black birds and cardinals poke their heads or beaks through for a few bites, but they cannot get inside. The smaller sparrows are finally having a field day! They get right in there and sit around for awhile. So cute. |
