12 best perky pet bird feeder finches
Perky-Pet bird feeders designed for finches are specialized feeders crafted to attract and cater to the needs of finch species, which are small, colorful, and often found in backyards and gardens. These bird feeders are popular among bird enthusiasts and are known for their unique features:
Tube Design: Many Perky-Pet finch feeders have a slender, tube-shaped design with multiple feeding ports. The slender design is well-suited for finches, allowing them to perch comfortably while feeding.
Small Perches: Finch feeders often feature small, short perches that are ideal for finches' small feet. This design helps prevent larger birds from monopolizing the feeder.
Thistle Seed Compatibility: Finches are particularly fond of thistle or nyjer seeds, which are tiny and rich in nutrients. Perky-Pet finch feeders are designed to dispense thistle seeds efficiently, reducing waste and attracting finches to your backyard.
Feeding Ports: The feeders typically have multiple feeding ports, allowing several finches to feed simultaneously without crowding.
Clear Tubes: Many Perky-Pet finch feeders have clear or semi-transparent tubes, which allow bird enthusiasts to easily monitor seed levels and know when it's time to refill the feeder.
Seed Tray: Some models come with a built-in seed tray or catch tray at the bottom to catch any spilled seeds, minimizing mess and waste.
Durable Construction: These feeders are constructed from durable materials, often with metal components, to withstand outdoor conditions and resist squirrel damage.
Easy to Clean: They are designed to be easy to disassemble and clean, which is important for maintaining bird health and hygiene.
Hanging Mechanism: Perky-Pet finch feeders typically come with a hanging mechanism, such as a hook or loop, for easy suspension from trees, hooks, or garden poles.
Attractive Design: Many models are aesthetically pleasing and can serve as decorative elements in your backyard or garden, enhancing your outdoor decor while attracting finches.
Seasonal Use: Finch feeders are popular during the warmer months when finches are more active, but they can also be used year-round to attract other small bird species.
When setting up a Perky-Pet finch feeder, it's important to place it in an area where finches are likely to visit, such as near shrubs, trees, or flowering plants, as these birds are often drawn to natural food sources like flowers and insects.Providing fresh thistle seeds and maintaining a clean feeder will help ensure that finches continue to visit your outdoor space, adding beauty and the joy of birdwatching to your backyard or garden.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this squirrel proof |
Answer: | I can't attest to it being squirrel proof but i have not seen any squirrels on the two (same as this one) feeders I have. |
Question: | Is there a hole on the bottom of the feeder so it can be mounted on a pole |
Answer: | Yes, there is a hole on the bottom tray. appears to be about 1-1/4" wide and about a 1/2" deep as it comes to a point. There is also a 1/4" depression around the hole that is about 2-1/4" deep. |
Question: | The feeder I bought has an inside cone system. Do the the thicker part of the cone go up or down |
Answer: | The cones should be inverted, with the wider part facing down. These cones help to keep the seed spread throughout the feeder so more birds can be feeding. |
Question: | Does this feeder hold only Nyjer thistle seed or mixed finch seed also |
Answer: | Will hold mixed Finch seeds too. |
Question: | What is screw hole on the bottom of the feeder for |
Answer: | Their are drainage holes and the bottom yellow piece detaches from the black feeder portion. The drainage holes don't work well though and the bottom few inches always get water damaged and the birds wont eat it |
Question: | Are the birds able to get the black sunflower seeds from the holes |
Answer: | This feeder isn't designed for sunflower seeds, they will get stuck. |
Question: | Does the seed get wet when it rains? Thistle is so expensive |
Answer: | The short answer is yes. BUT those persistent little finches still do a good job of cleaning up the wet seeds as they dry. I have had to take mine apart and clean them periodically to remove stems and other debris that is in the nyjer. By the way, I go through about 50 lbs of nyjer a month and bulk prices are much cheaper. |
Question: | I see a couple of reviews stating the seed falls out, and/or gets wet/moldy. How many other people are experiencing these issues as of Oct |
Answer: | I bought this a couple of months ago and have had no problems with the feeder, either with seeds falling out or getting moldy. Of course, we haven't had much rain here in SoCal. This feeder is solidly built and the finches love it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the tray have holes in it so if water does get in it drips out? I'm concerned about the tray collecting water and moldy seeds |
Answer: | This is probably the best feeder I have for keeping seeds from getting moldy. I use it for golden safflower and it dries out quickly if it gets wet or snowed on. The tray does have plenty of holes but is shallow so sometimes there is a small amount of build up of wet seed to wipe off but very easy to do. |
Question: | I have a problem with morning doves eating the safflower seed that I put out for cardinals. Does anyone know if doves can sit on this feeder |
Answer: | Carefully wire the mesh up so that the sitting area is shorter. I did this , little by little, until I got to the height that the morning dives could NOT get on the feeder. Cardinals and smaller birds can still easily feed. Also use safflower seed which eliminates alot of unwanted birds! |
Question: | Is this supposed to be squirrel proof |
Answer: | Or.....you can put a squirrel feeder for ears of corn nearby so the squirrels have some place to feed. |
Question: | Does this feeder work with mixed bird seed? Or only with black oil sunflower seed |
Answer: | No. I only use it for black oil sunflower seed. If you use mixed bird seed then the seed will all fall out from the large holes.Several times the squirrels will climb onto the top and tilt it but the sunflower seed will not fall out. Also, it really is squirrel-proof cause the squirrels can only get one seed at a time since the top locks.I love this feeder - it is the best for all birds! |

- Six Upside Down feeding ports with perches designed to allow goldfinches to feed undisturbed
- Includes a weather resistant cap and feeding tube
User questions & answers
Question: | Anybody have a problem with squirrels chewing through the plastic |
Answer: | I have a squirrel proof pole so I don't have that problem but I know the plastic gets pretty brittle a several months after being exposed to California sunlight. I hope this helps. |
Question: | Will this feeder attract goldfinces if I hang it from a window hanger |
Answer: | I am not sure...my feeders are about 12' from a large window. It is fascinating to watch them eat upside down. I have attracted Goldfinches and House Finches (red head). I love these feeders. I even feed finches in the winter. Without the finch food in the winter I never see Goldfinches. |
Question: | the description doesnt match the upside down feeder which feeder is this one |
Answer: | You do get the 399 feeder, not the 480 garden song as pictured under "Product Description." This is our second one (for backup if the first should break). Amazing. Never had so many goldfinches and the sparrows have given up trying to figure it out. |
Question: | When used with finch seeds do a lot of the seeds fall to the ground? I am unhappy with the socks because they waste a lot of seed |
Answer: | I don't find a lot of the seed on the ground. The openings are small slits and the seed has to be pulled from the feeder. Currently I have two finches and one chickadee that visit on a regular basis and the seed level does not drop quickly. My last feeder was flimsy and the squirrels destroyed it in a weekend. I hung this one in a higher tree away from my regular feeders and nothing has bothered it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I’ve had this for 3 years and the birds and i love it. after recent rains a 1” layer of seeds is stuck in the bottom. how can i get it out |
Answer: | Yes, the short curly blonde hair wigs can continue to buy soon. |
Question: | Is the cover supposed to fit securely on the top of the feeder? Mine is loose, even with the thing down that is supposed to hold it in place |
Answer: | I've washed mine. It looks fine. Just use proper synthetic wig shampoo and conditioner, pat it dry, and scrunch the curls after gently combing it with a synthetic wig comb. You don't want to force the curls out. Finally, use a wig stand to let it fully air dry. It's alway a good idea to use conditioning spray in between washes to maintain the synthetic hair's luster. |
Question: | What seed works best with this feeder |
Answer: | I don't K ow. Maybe they felt this was the color people would prefer. |
Question: | Which types of bird feed are people using? My birds seem to have trouble getting out the types talked about here so far |
Answer: | The warning is because most cheaper wigs can be a bit more obvious on/to urban black women >inner community<. They know that we are considerate of this. It's not as natural for one to assume a black woman has healthy hair enough for "beach wavy short wig" look, naturally(for example). *We do, it's just that people are more OPT to a preconceived judgement). Which is fine. Black women (not all) are VERY sensitive to how natural a wigs looks on the head(not strigy, thin or too shiny i.e. plastic looking). I'm not aware of any other group of women who ask "Is this wig cool for my race/ deep skin color?" But I could be wrong. So yes, girl go and wear this! The description is to make us comfortable. Not to exclude anyone else at all. Even though I understand your question. |

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. What are the most popular bird seeds to use?
A. Black Oil Sunflower Seed is the most popular bird seed. It is much smaller than the traditional sunflower seed and best for those birds with smaller bills, such as the sparrow, junco and goldfinch. This seed is accepted by the greatest variety of birds.
Mixed Seed is also popular. It is best to buy the mixes that contain white proso millet, a tiny cream colored seed with a shiny shell. Mixes containing finely cracked corn and black oil sunflower are also preferred by a large number of birds.
Nyjer (Thistle Seed) is imported from Africa and Asia. Nyjer won't germinate, however, it has a tendency to become moldy due to lack of air circulation. If you notice mold on the seed, it must be removed from the feeder and the feeder must be cleaned thoroughly.
Q. How do I clean my bird feeders?
A. Before filling your feeder with fresh seed, it is recommended that the following precautions are taken:
1. Remove all old seed.
2. Soak feeder in a light water/bleach solution (9 parts water to 1 part bleach).
3. Scrub feeder and allow to air dry.
4. Rake and remove accumulated hulls and droppings from underneath the feeders.
5. Spread mulch (bark or wood) under the feeder, replace mulch when soiled.
6. Thoroughly wash hands after handling and cleaning feeders.
Q. What is the importance of providing water for wild birds?
A. Wild birds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need seed. Birds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also for bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide birds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for birds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy. By adding a water source, you also can attract a larger variety of birds to your yard. You may even attract more colorful birds that don't eat seed, but are in need of water!

Great for Clinging and Perching
Birds won’t be able to resist flocking to the Perky-Pet Shorty Sunflower Bird Feeder. The diamond-shaped mesh surface and circular perch create an all-over dining area to accommodate several birds at once without competition. The mesh makes the perfect landing place for clinging birds, while 360-degree seed tray encourages perching.
All-Metal Construction
The Perky-Pet Shorty Sunflower Bird Feeder stands for durability. It has no wood and no plastic – it’s all metal! The wire mesh design features a powder-coated finish to resist rust, while the sturdy metal construction will help thwart squirrel damage. You can be sure this feeder will be a focal point in your backyard for many years to come!
Easy to Fill and Clean
Thanks to this feeder’s built-in drainage holes, water is unable to pool in the reservoir. In addition, the mesh design provides ventilation so wet seed airs out quickly and remains fresh for longer. The large overhang helps to shield the seed (as well as birds) from wet weather. Not only will the birds love this feeder, but it also means less seed waste for you!
Seed Stays Fresh
For your convenience, the Perky-Pet Shorty Sunflower Bird Feeder has a low-maintenance and simple design. The wire mesh and removable lid and base make it easy to clean every square inch. In addition, this feeder has a wide-mouth opening to allow for mess-free filling. Simply open the lid and pour in the seed!
