14 best nature bird feeders
Nature bird feeders are specially designed devices or structures that are used to attract and feed wild birds in outdoor settings, such as gardens, yards, or parks. They play a crucial role in supporting local bird populations, especially during seasons when natural food sources may be scarce. Here are some key points about nature bird feeders:
Types of Bird Feeders:
- Tube Feeders: These are cylindrical feeders with multiple feeding ports and perches. They're suitable for dispensing sunflower seeds, nuts, and smaller seeds.
- Platform Feeders: These are flat-surfaced feeders that allow birds to feed from a large tray. They're great for offering a variety of foods like seeds, fruits, and mealworms.
- Suet Feeders: These are designed to hold blocks or cakes of suet, which is a high-energy food made from animal fat. They're popular among insect-eating birds.
- Hummingbird Feeders: These are specially designed to dispense nectar, which is a sugary solution that mimics the natural nectar found in flowers.
- Nesting Boxes: While not technically feeders, nesting boxes are also important for providing shelter and nesting sites for birds.
Feeder Placement:
- Feeders should be placed in locations where birds can easily access them but also have nearby cover like trees or shrubs for quick escapes from predators.
- It's beneficial to have a variety of feeders at different heights and positions to accommodate different bird species.
Types of Bird Food:
- Seeds: Black oil sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, millet, and nyjer seeds are some of the most common types.
- Nectar: For hummingbirds, a mixture of water and sugar is used as a substitute for natural nectar.
- Suet: This is a high-calorie, energy-rich food source for birds, especially in colder months.
- Fruits: Birds like orioles, robins, and waxwings are attracted to fruits like apples, oranges, and berries.
Maintenance:
- Feeders should be regularly cleaned to prevent the buildup of mold, bacteria, and other contaminants that can be harmful to birds.
- Refill feeders as needed, especially during colder months or when natural food sources are scarce.
Bird Diversity:
- Different bird species have varying feeding preferences, so offering a variety of foods can attract a wider range of birds to your feeder.
Considerations:
- Avoid placing feeders near windows to prevent bird collisions.
- Bird feeders may also attract squirrels, so consider using squirrel baffles or choosing feeder designs that deter them.
Decorative Feeders:
- Some bird feeders are designed with aesthetic appeal in mind, serving as both functional feeding stations and decorative elements in outdoor spaces.
By providing a consistent and reliable food source, nature bird feeders can create a welcoming environment for birds, enhancing the overall biodiversity and enjoyment of your outdoor space.

User questions & answers
Question: | Screen replacement |
Answer: | This might defeat the purpose but I used 6” plant saucers to put seed in and placed them on the platform feeder. The seed just falls through the screen of these. I suppose you also could staple door screen to a small wood frame. |
Question: | is it hard to assemble |
Answer: | It came assembled; however the hanging cords are not fastened on very well. They kept coming off on one side so I had to do some work there. |
Question: | how long are the cables |
Answer: | I would say that 11 1/2 to 12 inches would be correct. I haven't measured the cables on my feeder, but am judging the length from looking out of my window. |
Question: | The mesh never came with mine. Do I have to return the item of can the mesh just be mailed to me |
Answer: | They will probably send you another. Call support |

Wild Wings Tray Feeder
Due to the open design of the tray feeder, it is perhaps one of the most versatile feeder styles. Ample space attracts larger birds like Jays and Mourning Doves which otherwise rarely visit other feeder styles. The tray format also enables feeding the widest variety of seed, from the typical sunflower seed to much more atypical feed like dried fruit, in-shell peanuts, and whole corn, allowing birders to attract a wider variety of birds to their yard.
Attract these birds
The Northern Cardinal can be found in southern Canada down through the eastern United States. The Northern Cardinal mainly feeds on grains, but also feeds on insects and fruits.
Attract these birds
The Mourning Dove is one of the most abundant and widespread of all North American birds. These birds are large and often uncomfortable eating from some types of feeders due to their size. Tray feeders are ideal for this bird.
Attract these birds
The Blue Jay is a native North American bird that can be found throughout most of the eastern and central United States, up into Canada. Blue Jays feed mainly on nuts, seeds, and soft fruits.

The Chickadee is a small North American songbird. There are several subspecies that can be found across the country. This friendly bird is well known for its boldness near humans, sometimes even feeding from the hand.

Nature's Way So Real Hummingbird Feeders
Nature's Way 'So Real' hummingbird feeders’ unique design creates an easy-to-use hummingbird feeder combined with a one-of-a-kind look that will be a favorite for both you and the hummingbirds!
This feeder comes with Easy-Connect technology built in to allow multiple feeders to be hung together for feeding even more hummingbirds in the same amount of vertical space! Each feeder features 1 feeding port with leak-free silicone gasket, built-in hummingbird perch to encourage longer feeding times, and a 5 ounce nectar capacity for less wasted nectar.
Easy Connect Design
An additional hook on the underside of this hummingbird feeder allows for multiple feeders to be connected from top to bottom, creating a decorative 'vine' of flowers. Use this feature to increase the number of hummingbirds that can feed utilizing the same amount of vertical space!
Built-In Hummingbird Perch
The decorative perch allows hummingbirds to perch while feeding. This can increase feeding time and prolong your hummingbird viewing.
Bee Resistant Design
The unique dome shape of the feeder lid creates a space between the feeding port opening and the nectar that is held in the base dish. A hummingbird’s tongue is roughly twice the length of the bird’s bill, allowing it to easily reach down into the bottom dish to the sweet nectar while bees and wasps have much shorter tongues and will be unable to reach the liquid.
Hummingbird Nectar
The formula for hummingbird food is simple: about one part white granulated sugar to four parts water. Boil the water for approximately 2 minutes, add the sugar, and stir to dissolve thoroughly. We do not recommend adding red dye to the nectar mixture. Cover and allow to cool before using or pouring into a clean storage bottle. A large batch of nectar can be made and stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. This makes refilling the feeder easy so you won't mind doing it every few days.
You must change the nectar frequently - at least twice a week. The need to change the nectar depends on the temperatures, where the feeder is hung, and number and frequency of hummingbirds feeding at your feeder. If the birds are not emptying your feeder between cleanings, it's unnecessary and wasteful to fill it completely. Fill only with the amount of nectar they will consume in a few days. Over time you will get a feel for how much nectar to put in the feeder. If you notice that the nectar is turning milky, or that white strings or black spots are growing in it, change it more often.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the diameter of the hole for the cups? They seem a bit deep to hold optional meal worms for feeding |
Answer: | The hole the cups sit in is approximately 2.5 inches. The cups are approximately 2.5 inches long. I put grape jelly in the cups and the birds have no problems reaching into the cups to eat the jelly. I personally see no problem with birds reaching in a retrieving meal worms from the cups. Once they figure out the worms are in there.....hopefully this helps. If you need more information or if this wasn't what you were looking for, let me know. |
Question: | Can the glass cup be purchased sheperately? The squrril sent the feeder flying and both cup were thowen out and can only find one |
Answer: | Contact JCs Wildlife since they manufactured the item. I don't know if they sell the glass cups separately or not. But that would be the place to start. |
Question: | Are there replacement cups that can be ordered separately |
Answer: | Yes! Replacement jelly jars can be purchased directly from the JCs website. |
Question: | Can the Orioles fly up under the roof? Mine seem to be perplexed with this feeder |
Answer: | The Orioles do not have any issues using this feeder. I have found when you introduce a new feeding station the birds are hesitant to use it. Last year I put out my feeder after the start of the feeding season. Since I had other feeding stations already available, the Orioles were reluctant to go to it. They finally did....but this year I put this one out first at the first sighting of Orioles and they use it just the same as my other feeding stations. |

Question: | Is this a top-fill feeder |
Answer: | No, the cylinder unscrews from the base, you fill it like you would a glass and then screw the base on "upside down" and then turn the feeder over and hang it. |
Question: | I'm getting lots of bees on the feeder. Does anyone know a product compatible with this to stop the bees and wasps from drinking the nectar |
Answer: | First Nature makes two similar feeders. The one I like has the round holes. They also make one with slots. My hummers don't like the slots, so I stopped using it. The last time I ordered this feeder a month ago, I got the slotted feeder. I do get some bees and wasps. When that happens I move the feeder. The hummers will find it. The bees and wasp may, but not right away. |
Question: | Is this feeder glass or plastic |
Answer: | this is all plastic. I love that it has perches so they can sit on it while they drink - and they do! I've had other kinds, but this is the only one I use now. I make my own syrup 2/3 c hot water, mixed with 1/3 c sugar, stir til dissolved, add 2/3 c cold water, stir and pour in. I clean it with white vinegar and hot water. |
Question: | Any problem with leaking |
Answer: | I have of 7 of these feeders. 3 of them are at least 7 years old. The others about 5 years old. Other than faded from the North Texas sun, they all work well and no leaking/sealing issues. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone ever had problems with hummingbird feeders attracting roaches |
Answer: | No, never roaches. I live in an apartment and have never had any issues with feeders and roaches in the 8 years I've had them. I did have ants get into a feeder once (not this feeder) and was able to fix it by putting Vaseline on the hanger. Hope that helps! |
Question: | Is there a water moat to keep out ants |
Answer: | you can also hang the feeder with a bit of fishing wire and the ants can't walk on the line. i did that with one of mine and no issues. |
Question: | Has anyone had any issues with leaks? I have 14 feeders and they all leak, mainly at the seams where the plastic is molded |
Answer: | Purchased in 2015 and no leaks. However, I don't fill it more than halfway because we have only about 3 hummingbirds. They take a while to empty it and I want to clean the feeder each time I refill. |
Question: | does this feeder come with the nectar or do you have to buy it separately |
Answer: | One part sugar (1 full cup) to four parts water (4 cups). DO NOT ADD COLORING. The red coloring may be toxic and certainly does not attract the birds. Once the birds start using this feeder others will see them and will join in. With two feeders, I need to refill them with two quarts of clear nectar each a day...year round here in San Diego. I'm using feeders I bought in 2014, so they last a long time in the shade. Try different places until you find one the birds feel safe at. Bees cannot reach the nectar in this feeder, and the feeder is easy to clean, which I do with a bottle brush and hot water every day. Enjoy! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are bees a problem with this feeder |
Answer: | I have never had a problem with bees with this feeder; I have with other types of feeders. This feeder is very easy to clean. |
Question: | Is this feeder dishwasher safe |
Answer: | Believe them when they say this isn't dishwasher safe. I ruined my first one in the dishwasher... I really like these feeders though, so easy to clean, which is very important to me. |
Question: | Will humming birds drink from this feeder? I want to attract them both but only put out one feeder |
Answer: | I have 5 of these feeders and am purchasing 2 more. In Northern California where I live humming bird live year round and some migrate here in spring and summer. Orioles migrate here each summer so that is why I changed to these feeders. I use the 4:1 ratio to make my nectar and both hummingbirds and Orioles (also wasps!) will consume this nectar. In the summer I have to fill 6 32oz feeders every day. |
Question: | So what is the difference between hummingbird feeders and oriole feeders? I am familiar with hummingbirds and have feeders for them, but until now I never knew that there were similiar feeders for orioles. Wouldn't the hummers feed on the oriole feeders also |
Answer: | The feeding ports are larger on the Oriole feeders. Yes, the hummingbirds will use the Oriole feeders. Orioles can't use the hummer feeders because the feeding ports are too small for their beaks. |
