Question: | Can it be mounted on a pole |
Answer: | I am not sure. I hung it in a tree. Never tried a pole. |
Question: | Is this feeder compatible with audubon 3 piece pole kit model napole |
Answer: | Don’t know. I just have it on a hook |
Question: | Can you hang it, and how does it open |
Answer: | The cover slides up to open and fill. I did hang it in a tree but it didn’t last long. The weather destroyed the wood. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Raccoons keep knocking our feeders down (and breaking them). Will the wire cage on this unit survive a fall of ca. 7 feet |
Answer: | The wire cage will, but the tube is plastic. Comes apart very easily for cleaning. I don't think that part would survive. Can you hang your feeders on a wire between two trees ? |
Question: | Is there a pole mount on the feeder? If so, for what size pole |
Answer: | There is no pole mount on the feeder .... it is meant to hand from a hook, etc. |
Question: | How do you clean this feeder |
Answer: | While I Haven't tried it, it looks like it can be unscrewed from the bottom. The tube would then be removable for cleaning. |
Question: | Will it keep out the crackles |
Answer: | My crackles reach in with their beaks and grab a few bites ... not all .. some do ... but they don’t empty out the feeder. Cardinals can get in and out easily. I have only one hanging out in the yard .. so I really don’t mind the small birds. |
Question: | Would a chipmunk be too light for the mechanism to work |
Answer: | I think a chipmunk would be too light, but I am honestly not sure. We have a squirrel problem only. Side note, birds do not seem to be too fond of this feeder. |
Question: | Do cardinals visit this feeder |
Answer: | We live in Iowa and have 1 cute couple that comes to ours. |
Question: | Could a squirrel get its paw caught in between the closing parts? I don't want them nabbing seed but I also don't want one getting hurt |
Answer: | I have this feeder on my deck so I can watch it and squirrels usually put pressure on the bars which closes the hopper before they can put a paw in it. This feeder is very humane. Enough seed falls on the ground so that they eventually learn it is easier to eat on the ground than to get into the feeder. |
Question: | will this keep bigger birds from getting the food |
Answer: | Yes, bigger birds need a larger version of this feeder. You won't be disappointed in this or a larger one. |

User questions & answers
Question: | i am going to try for first time. any suggestion for the seeds in this feeder |
Answer: | Mixed blends work great. Sunflower, safflower, un-shelled peanuts, millet, milo, and cracked corn are all suitable. |
Question: | Can this feeder be placed on a pole or only hung on a hook |
Answer: | yes. my parent have a pole with "arms" that this hangs from. It's nice in that it's not so heavy that it pulls the pole over (could be that their pole is placed securely enough in the ground that it doesn't need to be counter balanced). Also, so far, they claim that the squirrels cannot get to it. |
Question: | Do UNshelled black oil sunflower seeds work in this feeder |
Answer: | I would say yes as I use them in my mix. The storage barell of this feeder is smaller and narrower than most so the sunflower seeds may imped the downward flow of seeds in the tube if the concentration is too many, but the birds can get to them thru the openings. I hope that answers your Question? I got this feeder to keep away the starlings and other larger birds. It appears to help but they can reach at time if they can hang on |
Question: | What are the dimensions, height, and width |
Answer: | The feeder is 10 inches tall by 6,5 inches wide. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it safe for the birds to put a weatherproofing mixture on cedar wood |
Answer: | I rub olive oil or Vaseline into the wood perch every fall and thoroughly wipe it off with paper towel. It's harmful to let birds feathers contact oil or grease as it prevents them from keeping warm but if you wipe it off very well the wood is protected for the winter. |
Question: | Is the perch metal? Or is it a wooden dowel |
Answer: | The perch dowel is metal and very stable. We have a few clever red wing blackbirds who have figured out to stand sideways (not on the perch) and eat, but the small birds do well. Our squirrel was defeated early on and never comes back. |
Question: | What are the dimensions |
Answer: | 8.2 x 12.8 x 15.2 inches as in description above - the description is far down on the page I think the Manufacturer gave description from the larger unit. |
Question: | We are having a problem with the bar that closes sticking and not opening back up after the weight of the squirrel closes it. Any suggestions |
Answer: | We've never had a problem with squirrels hitting the bar (only the cats jumping up at it!). Check the alignment of the metal parts and the adjustment of the spring tension. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I fill this thing |
Answer: | the plastic lid slides up the metal hanger. These are great and they last. only thing I added was a tray at the bottom. |
Question: | where do i need to find the steel vertical hanger for this feeder |
Answer: | Any garden center or hardware store with a garden center has "s" hooks in various lengths (6 inches to a foot or so) for hanging plants & bird feeders. They usually run $2 to $6 dollars & work great. |
Question: | Does the top, bottom and perches come off for cleaning |
Answer: | Top comes off, rest does not. I use a bottle brush to clean it & that works just fine. |
Question: | How many inches wide is the cap and the hanger |
Answer: | Top of cap is 3 1/2 inches, underside is 2 1/2 (so is tube) & hanger is just slightly under 3 inches wide. Mine hanged from an “S” shaped hook in a tree. Hope that helps. I really like the feeder and have 3 of them. There are drain holes in the green rim on the bottom & I hook a wire basket with a coconut liner to catch spilled seed. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how do you post mount |
Answer: | Normally a post specific to birding will have arms to hang various feeders, etc. Barring that any pole will work providing you can mount any type of arm such as might hold a hanging plant. I myself have done this by attaching a hanging plant bracket/arm to a pole using hose clamps |
Question: | does squirrel weight on the perches close access to the seeds |
Answer: | not really - sadly when we had this in our backyard the squirrels were (clever enough!) still able to access the seeds. |
Question: | Can it be mounted on a pole |
Answer: | I’ve got it hanging on a pole but the catch is weak on mine. I can’t fill it too full of bird seed because it opens and spills. Hopefully, yours will be stronger. |
Question: | Does the two sides have plastic or glass insert |
Answer: | These inserts are plastic. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the opening large enough for fruit and nut feed |
Answer: | FYI - the opening is 5/8 inch wide so with that info, you'll have to figure out if this meets your needs. |
Question: | Will doves be able to land on this |
Answer: | As gentle as they seem, doves are not particularly graceful at landing and takeoff. If however you hang the feeder from a pole attached to a typical deck rail, the doves will land on the rail and reach over into the feeder. They also feed on the ground under the feeder, so nothing goes to waste. |
Question: | Why is this product as made in usa when it's clearly made in china |
Answer: | You should ask the manufacturer that question, not another purchaser. I have no idea if you are correct. |
Question: | Can this birdfeeder be mounted on a metal pole |
Answer: | Rather than mounting on a pole, I would hang it from a shepherd's hook...much easier! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does hopper type feeder features spring operated perches which close when squirrels or large birds |
Answer: | This feeder has no springs at all. So squirrels or large birds are able to jump on the feeder and dump all of the seeds. |
Question: | Can it be pole mounted |
Answer: | it can be pole mounted. you will to drill fasteners thru the floor of the feeder. should be simple with a cordless drill. that is how i installed mine. |
Question: | does this feeder have seed flow on both sides |
Answer: | Yes, the feeder is identical on both sides and the ends (suet baskets) are identical too. |
Question: | I ordered 2 of these. One of the hangers is broken. How can I get a replacement for the hanger |
Answer: | Unfortunately when I received this "Hertage Farm birdfeeder" I found it was not from Heritage Farm but made in China. So I sent it back. I called Amazon and told them that it was false advertising to say it was "made in the USA" and made by Heritage Farm when it indeed wasn't. So they assured me they had the correct feeders and it must've been a problem in the warehouse. So they sent me another feeder which again was the one from China and again I send it back. As far as your broken hanger, if it is the real Heritage Farm feeder you can call them directly. They have a website. But if it's one from China I don't think you can do anything. Maybe Amazon will take the whole thing back. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is it plastic in the windows |
Answer: | It seems to be very hard plastic. We still haven't needed to clean the windows. Our oldest feeder is at least 5 or 6 years old (maybe older) and it has held up beautifully. We tried some other brands a few years ago, and the Absolute II is the best. Neither squirrels nor doves have mastered it. We highly recommend it. |
Question: | what diameter pole does it use |
Answer: | Yes , pole provided with feeder is one inch in diameter. ( 4 slip joint sections) . |
Question: | Could it be mounted on a 4"x4" post |
Answer: | Yes. I attached a threaded iron pipe flange (round) that accepted a 1" threaded pipe. I secured the bottom of the flange with four screws to the top of the 4"x4" post. I then attached a threaded 1" pipe stub threaded at both ends. You can get these parts at the local Home Depot. I screwed in one end of my pipe stub into the flange and greased it to prevent rust. I attached the bird feeder mount to the feeder with the attached hardware (pole mount) and simply slid the pole mount onto the top of the pipe stub. The bird feeder mounted sturdily since the pipe stub was 1" and the pole is designed to mount on a 1" pole. |
Question: | If I set this to keep starlings off. . . What happens if multiple birds try to feed at one time? Will total weight activate this |
Answer: | yes it will ! 7+ sparrows activate the shutterPeter |

User questions & answers
Question: | What I should use to replace the plastic piece between the pole and bird house? Mine is cracked causing the feeder to shift |
Answer: | The plastic end cap was lost long ago. Without the piece, the upper food chamber will be too loose, wobble and tilt. To maintain the fit of the feeder on the vertical post, II wrap the upper end pipe around its circumference with 1 inch widw duct tape. I add enough layers till the fit is snug. Feeder stays in proper position. |
Question: | Is this bird feeder good for cardinals and larger sunflower seeds |
Answer: | I find the feeder awkward for larger birds like cardinals and jays. The pegs are relatively short and the openings are not offset, so several large birds try to land and give up or are able to land and have a hard time reaching into the feeder. We have one male cardinal that has figured it out, but his female mate can’t feed on it and waits to pick up seeds from the ground. Smaller birds love it, however. |
Question: | how long is the pole |
Answer: | The pole comes in 3 sections of 24 inches that fit inside one another. Two of these sections lose 2 inches per pole because they fit inside one another. Also, this completed pole section loses 10 inches because it sits inside the baffle - the bottom skirt that is green in the picture. When all is said and done and the entire assembly is buried in the ground 8 inches or so, the total height is 70 inches from the ground to the top of the feeder. At first, I thought this was too short. However, this feeder holds a great deal of food and another section would make it too top heavy. I highly recommend this feeder. Squirrels and chipmunks climb the pole but only get inside the green baffle / skirt and no further. |
Question: | How tall is it |
Answer: | It depends how deep you set the pole... but mine ends up at about 5 feet from ground to cap. |
Question: | Does this come with a hook for hanging |
Answer: | Yes, the hook is attached to the hanging cables. |
Question: | What are the actual sizes of the 2 available models? naggplat and ggplat. from what i see there is less than an inch difference between them |
Answer: | GGPLATT is 12.6"x12.8"x2.1" and NAGGPLAT is 12.8"x12.9"x2.3. When I purchased the NAGGPLATT, the price was about the same as GGPLATT. I love this platform feeder, especially during cold months. I have noticed the birds prefer this feeder and I have lots of different types of feeders. Not sure if I would get the smaller one, though. I do know the squirrels and chipmunks also love this feeder and I know the seed does not topple out when they jump up on the larger feeder. Not sure how the smaller one would do with the critters. Great material and I am sure you will really like it. |
Question: | what's are the dimensions of the feeder box for model GGPLAT |
Answer: | 12 3/4 X 12 3/4. X 2 1/2. |
Question: | DOes the scrren come out easily for cleaning |
Answer: | The screen doesn't come out. But it doesn't need to. I just flip it over and tap on the bottom to dump the leftover seed out. The birds pick through it on the ground. Most of what I find leftover is seed casings. If I had to clean it, I would just run the hose over it. I haven't found anything in the tray that is nasty; no poop. Its hung from the bottom of the deck above my patio. The squirrels can't get to it and the birds like it. I love this feeder. Its made of plastic so it won't rot like wood. |
Question: | Is the closure weight adjustable and if so, how |
Answer: | Take a twist tie and attach the top of the spring to the cage- that increases the springiness |
Question: | Can little birds go inside and get stuck |
Answer: | No. The cage is not room enough for a bird to go in and get stuck. The birds manage the cage easily. Sadly it is not perfectly squirrel-proof but it does limit the amount that they can take out. I have had mine for many months and the birds are totally fine. |
Question: | Will cardinals trigger the ports to close? I want a feeder that my cardinals can feed from |
Answer: | I'm not sure. The seed I had last year attracted lots of chickadees and other small birds. I don't think cardinals will have a problem, though. They're still too light to push the feeder ports closed. |
Question: | Some had a problem with the spring release opening. How did you remedy that |
Answer: | The issue was when a squirrel tried for the food the release closed the holes like it supposed to. But wouldnt return after the squirrel left. The design is such when closed the opening is smaller closing on the stopping pin and grabbing so I put in a stopper so it wont go all the way down |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it deter chipmunks |
Answer: | No it does not deter chipmunks but I love this feeder. We placed a small baffle under feeders which solved the chipmunk issue. |
Question: | Male cardinals aren't using the perch. They just sit below the feeder eating off the ground. Female Cardinals use it. Any idea why |
Answer: | I have the same problem. Even with the optional Cardonal ring, they still won't use it. I think the feeding ports are too small for them to comfortably use. The fool proof way to prevent squirrels from eating your bird seed is to use Safflower seeds. They have all the nutrition of sunflower seeds, all varieties of sang birds love them (including woodpeckers) AND THE SQUIRRELS WILL NOT TOUCH THEM! I wish someone would have told me this before I spent $$$$ over the years trying to find a squirrel proof feeder. You can buy a 50 lb.. bag on Amazon for about $53 with free shipping. That comes out to about $1.06 a pound. Get an inexpensive feeder that cardinals will use and your problems are solved! |
Question: | How often will I have to refill this feeder on average if I have a fair number of birds in the area and what cost would that entail |
Answer: | Not trying to sound obvious, but it depends on the number and type of birds. My feeders in Houston draw Cardinals, Mockingbirds, Jays and Woodpeckers - hungry birds, plus lots of Sparrows and Carolina threshers. I have to refill the feeder about every 5 days with this crew. My feeder in Brenham also draws lots of birds, but smaller ones, and I only have to refill it every 7-8, sometimes 10 days. In the winter months, it will have to be refilled more often, of course. |
Question: | The tension doesn't seem to deter rats...I don't know if this can be adjusted...I feel bad for the birds...but I took the feeder down today |
Answer: | I have not had rats try to get the bird seed. I have had it for 3 years, the spring in the tension got loose after too many squirrel attempts. What I found is that the cardinal ring weighed it down and the birds could not get to the seed. The customer care sent me a new spring mechanism and it works great now, ring and all. |
Product features
How It works?
Openings in the bottom section of the feeder (shroud) align with seed ports, providing birds access to the seed. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the shroud down, closing the seed ports. Squirrels and large birds are foiled but not harmed in any way.
The Closing Mechanism
Use the feeder with the factory setting before making any adjustments.
To increase the adjustment setting, rotate the transparent cartridge clockwise. The red line will move down from the previous setting. This increases the weight required to close access to the seed.
To decrease the adjustment setting, turn the cartridge counter clockwise. The red line will move up from the previous setting. This decreases the weight required to close access to the seed.
Where to Locate your Plus
You can locate this bird feeder anywhere and be squirrel free. Position it to get great close-up views of your favorite birds. Hang your Squirrel Buster Plus over a window, in a tree, on a deck, a fence, in your garden, on the side of your house, from a rain trough or over sliding doors. Use brackets, extension hooks and tree hooks to hang your feeder at the recommended clearance. Hooks and brackets are available at birding stores, garden centers and hardware supply stores.
Need for Clearance
Remember it’s a squirrel’s weight that triggers the closing mechanism. If a squirrel can reach over from a nearby foothold and avoid placing his weight on the feeder, he can access the birdseed. To overcome this problem, allow for at least 18 in/47 cm of clearance around the feeder. This will force the squirrel to climb onto the feeder and trigger the closing mechanism.
Taking apart your Plus
Squirrel Buster Plus components are designed to be assembled and dismantled easily by hand, without any tools.
